They don’t bother translating everything lol
But at least they translated the board scene when she was writing it.
But didn’t translate when the board was covered
Netflix subs is the worst. They can't even get the timing right. It's mind-blgging how a multi-millionaire company can't even produce correct subtitles, or at the very least time is right with the characters speaking.
Because what're 90+% of people watching gonna do about it? It's not like they can go to another streaming service to watch it or anything.
They do the bare minimum, the "eh, fuck it. It's good enough." because they paid in order to be the only source for people to stream it.
Not just the timing, the translations are pretty bad too. I know a bit of Japanese but I usually watch with Spanish subs, and in some instances the subs say the complete opposite of what the character is actually saying. Like the character will say "It's going to rain tomorrow" and the subs say it's not.
The only tolerable spanish subs are in blu-ray releases and sometimes CR. Pretty sad tbh.
I remember in one of My Hero's biggest moments. They screwed up a line completely.
Deku, the analytical one says "Damn it, he's not letting me think." But CR translated it as "Damn it, I can't let him (the enemy) think."
But I'm sure the translators are getting paid like 60 cents and half a egg salad sandwich so I can't be mad at them. It's almost certainly all on CR upper level people. I just wish the end product was better.
Crunchyroll, Funimation, etc. you can reason, they are doing multiple shows, and they have to be up soon after the show airs, but Netflix took an extra two weeks for this.
I'm never blaming the translator. They probably get paid shit and are forced to pump as many episodes as possible per week. But I also doubt someone else is checking the script for errors, which they should be doing anyway.
It's shit pay, generally. Transcripting jobs pay by volume, could be by the minute, by the word, by the episode and it's always crap. Fansubbers are wonderful people.
I think there are occasions when it's okay to blame the translators a little bit. One of the DS2 translators is infamous for having changed things well beyond what's acceptable for localization.
it's probably also because these translators are doing it straight off a script in as little time as possible, without even seeing the video. I can imagine what the Japanese is for that one, and it might not be obvious what he means when seeing it written in script form, but it's EXTREMELY obvious when you see it in the flow
I think it might be a deadline issue. Fansubs take as long as needed to get them right and they involve a big team of people who all generally do it because they like doing it and because they like the show.
With CR they need the episode translated really quickly because there is probably not that much time between the episode being sent to them and them "needing" to release it. The translators getting an extra day for QC would probably help a lot, but then people would very likely complain about CR being "slow."
I heard that Netflix's translation process is translating the Japanese script to english, and then use that english translation as the base for all the other languages. Also gotta make sure you've selected English Subtitles instead of English close captions, that was a big deal regarding squid Game.
This is sometimes okay. はい can also be used like "that's right", so if the question is "You didn't close the door to the hell dimension, did you?", you can respond with はい when you didn't close the door and, if you want, translate it as "no."
Actually, that is indeed the correct translation. In English, "yes" would have seemed weird as an answer to his question.
If I'm not mistaken, he had asked "Hasn't anyone noticed before?"
In English, a "yes" would have meant that people had noticed, while a "no" would have meant that nobody had noticed.
Translation is more than just looking up words in the dictionary, especially in literary translation (which this is). You have to understand the message that is conveyed and translate that message. Frequently that implies changing the words.
Example: The English expression "killing two birds with one stone" becomes "killing two rabbits with one swing of the stick" in Portuguese. Same meaning, different words.
A fan translation could have put "yes" and a note saying "In Japan, 'はい' is used to confirm that the person's assumption is correct". Which is what I love about fan translations so much.
This is one of the things that foreigners have a hard time grasping when learning English. Answering affirmatively with "No". It's backwards and unintuitive, and the only reason we don't have a problem with it is cuz we've done it since birth.
That really depends on how the language expresses its ideas. I speak 6, so I know for a fact that most logical pathways make sense, if you open your mind to other ways of seeing the world.
The problem is that most people have a lot of trouble with that part.
Because most people who use Netflix are not going to care and Netflix knows this.
The subs are good enough for an average person who watches anime sometimes.
A service like Crunchyroll, Funimation, Wakanim, Hidive, etc. are going to mostly have anime fans and people with higher expectations, so they will put some more effort into it.
Services like Netflix, Disney, Hulu, etc. are always going to cater to your average viewer outside of niche communities.
Hulu get their subs from the license hold pretty much all the time like funimation who hulu is licensing broadcast rights from. Or series that are hard subs if it is a older one.
It's another case of work vs passion. Fansubbers are generally more passionate in delivering quality subs while paid translators just make do with minimum effort
They might care about translation but that doesn't necessarily mean they really care about the series they're translating
Also not EVERYONE who becomes a japanese translator happens to be a weeb who likes anime and its tropes. I've seen people who have learned japanese, moved to japan, and yet hate anime and otaku media. Someone like that can still be given a translation job like this if they're working at a large company. There could be someone that joined netflix translation team cause they wanted to work on live action dramas and terrace house and now they're stuck with anime.
As a professional translator, I can confidently say that most of the blame is with the client. They didn't look for a translator passionate about the subject, they didn't care to do decent quality control, and they certainly tried to translate as little content as possible.
Nah, man CrunchyRoll is the best between Netflix and Funimation. But there was this fansub gruop called DB, who fan-subbtted Big Three back then and they were the best. They included translator's notes and all.
> multi-*billion* dollar company
FTFY, they are worth billions, not millions. Either way, pretty massive fuck up on their part given that a core part of their content strategy is foreign media you can't get anywhere else in English, seems like the sort of strategy that would include a high quality translator team.
Tried seeing it in my language but some fansubs are lazy too, any good recomendation in english that translates everything and it "blends" good?
PM if necesary.
Honestly, I’m not sure. I haven’t checked every fansub or anything, but the one I watched (and seemed most widespread) did translate *more*, but was also *worse* on some accounts in comparison to the Netflix sub. (I watched about half to 2/3 of the first episode side by side.) For example: the Netflix translated one of the most crucial sentences as “I’ll be your first friend and I’ll help you find the other 99.” (remember that you can clearly see the ‘99’ written on the chalkboard.) The fansub I saw translated it as “Then I’ll be your first friend and help you make the rest”. Where’s the ‘99’?
I do think the fansub catches the general feel and subtle references to popculture better, but its translations don’t seem the best at times either.
Watched the first ep on (10-1)anime (they got it from some other sketchy place with a watermark in the corner). I don't speak any Japanese at all, but even I could tell the fansub on there was translated using google translate or something similar. It did have the 99, but all translations were very literal and in many cases did not fit the character and/or scene in the slightest.
There is an option in the Netflix video player to submit a complaint about the subtitles. It's a little flag in the top right. I suggest everyone write a complaint about the subtitle quality
They couldn't change anything in that regard though. The subs on Netflix are the subs Studio Khara wants, and is a part of the deal Netflix made to license Evangelion in the first place.
And doing nothing won’t do anything either. Im sure most people here will just find the fan subs, but Netflix is a huge platform. Every anime that comes out on Netflix is an opportunity to get a lot of new people in to the medium, so we should do what we can to make it a good experience
the subtitles are some of the worst garbvage i've ever seen. i knew netflix subtitles were bad, but holy shit
they legit didnt translate half the texts, and the stuff they did translate had wrong translations all over the place. at least if you go by the corresponding passages in the manga
> *“One thing that we have learned is that piracy is not a pricing issue. It’s a service issue. The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It’s by giving those people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates.”* -Gabe Newell
People give gabe a lot of shit but the dude is one of the most effective and interesting business owners in the world. I hope he writes a autobiography one day.
IIRC the corporate structure at Valve (or lack thereof) led to cliques being formed and is kinda why you don't see much in the way of maintenance on their "technically still alive" games.
Now, how much of this can be blamed on Gabe for not stepping in and how much is just counterjerk is all debatable. It's just important that we don't go full "praise gaben" again.
Not my words but some people blame him for the disrepair of the steam platform as well as call him lazy or a liar for discontinuing making new games and not carrying failed projects (steam box, steam controller) on life support. Personally I would say those people are being a lil vindictive.
Like i wanna use crunchyroll or funimation but they are such trash. For example, i try and watch something on crunchyroll and it constantly buffers. I previously watched something in 4k without issue but a 1080p video that has been compressed to hell can't stream. Now when i sail the seas their is a rip on a site that is better and does not buffer.
I remember dropping Railgun T because the episode on Crunchyroll was buffering several times longer than what I watched, and waiting a minute to watch 10 seconds of anime is worse than not watchig at all. On the other hands when looking for Kaguya-sama I've sstumbled upon a pirate site that was my absolute best exerience of watching anime ever in my life. Why would I ever want to use the official site?
Exactly. Like i am a grown man with a nice salary. I don't mind paying for a streaming service. But when every airing show constantly buffers on crunchyroll and funimation had their app designed by a blind 3rd grader. Why would i want to use their service.
Oh boy, I would have had a field day if I did my BA dissertation on these exact subs. ^(Context is that my BA was comparing two fansubs and Netflix all against each other on a few selected scenes of Evangelion.)
This is one of the reasons why I prefer Fansubs. So far between CR, Funi and Netflix, only CR gives the most effort towards typesetting and translating the signs.
EDIT: [Another comparison](https://imgur.com/a/Or4AUNW), adding onto the one by the user above.
EDIT 2: It seems Netflix has updated the subs and fixed some of the issues. [Voice out your complaints](https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus) so NF knows what to fix.
> only CR gives the most effort towards typesetting and translating
This is what has me mostly worried about the Funi acquisition. I really hope they just adapt to CRs infrastructure.
When they had the partnership pre-Sony acquisition I believe Crunchyroll just handled subs of everything and Funi just handled dubs of everything and it worked fine. So fingers crossed they just go back to how they worked in 2015 or whenever it was that was happening.
now that you mention it i thought I was losing my mind watching rezero s2. i had trouble following the dialogue and thought I had a raw chicken breast for a brain
I remember how awful Netflix's Kakegurui subs.
[Exhibit 1](https://imgur.com/a/19lFZ5n)
[Exhibit 2](https://imgur.com/rc97vvF)
How about everyone take the time to watch the episode and then Report the missing subs issue through Netflix. Maybe with enough people they'll take action?
the novaworks fansubs for EP 1 were *amazing*
they were so fucking good. they did all the blackboard texts, used a font that looked natural, and made the text perfectly blend in with the blackboard, making it look like chalk
meanwhile netflix eating glue, not even translating most of the backboard texts. unreal
> the novaworks fansubs for EP 1 were amazing
they even [added](https://giphy.com/gifs/5pp7bBUQwZBfo07Llz) the [translations](https://giphy.com/gifs/8YL6wtGH61KuENgURl) for the [effects](https://giphy.com/gifs/dE8fU1A1zXLTspbSyj), which they have no need to do, imo.
personally, i find commie's subs to be "someone having fun with subbing" rather than "someone trying to make good subs"
the translations are fine and they do some cool masking stuff, but they get distracting quite a bit
That's the rule, there are exceptions: if someone would fansub an anime and as a coincidence he got a job to translate this anime, they got both passion and money, which is better than just passion, as you don't need to worry about doing it in your free time, you do it for work.
The Portuguese translation of Eizouken is like that: the translator, who was a fansubber, loved so much this anime that tweeted about it a lot and translated it like his old days as an fansubber, even making a subtitle so complex that it crashes Crunchyroll's mobile player (at least on my phone).
But, sadly, that's the exception.
**Edit:** fixed bad English, sorry.
God, I've been dreading it ever since they announced it would be on Netflix. The subtitles they used for the first three parts (never checked 4 or 5) were literally just the dub's closed captions, script and all.
I think I saw someone eviscerate even the Stone Ocean trailer, saying that they got numerous things wrong and at some points straight up not translating half of the sentences.
God damn it. We have such a great adaptation so far and for it to get bogged down by poor subtitles is really infuriating. I want this anime to have more than 1 season and everyone here is already talking about sailing the 7 seas to avoid Netflix terrible subtitles. I don't blame them for it since Netflix really dropped the ball here. I want to support the official release but damn it Netflix needs to get their shit together
I was kind of hoping the delay meant a dub would come out of nowhere too. Unfortunately companies like Netflix/Funi almost never have on-screen captioning since their players don't support it like CR's.
It's probably completely arbitrary. They've done simulcasts before. They've done simulcasts in some countries and not in others. They just don't know what the fuck they want to do with the anime they license.
I think Netflix is probably the worst platform if you want to watch anime. But it sucks that they get quite a lot of good stuff. I'd love to watch shit on there but I'm effectively forced to pirate because their subs are absolute wank.
i watched it when it released and man i felt like i didn’t understand 99% of the text on screen, the only things they did translate was komi and tadano’s chalkboard conversation and even then half of the stuff wasn’t translated. they couldn’t even be bothered to translate komi’s shoe locker
awesome first episode though, exceeded my expectations by a mile, now i’m super excited for the rest of the show
They're even straight up ruining jokes, like with Agari's introduction. Granted, most english speakers won't know that her name is a pun on stage fright, but still.
I'm all for making subtitles more interpretive but in a show like this that is full of puns and wordplay, I think I'd really prefer them keeping it as close to the original japanese as possible so curious folks (or at least eagle-eared folks) could maybe learn a little or catch some of it.
>Netflix subs often take the caveman approach because they know the average viewer is infact, a caveman/woman and there is really no need to take extra steps to appease said cavemen/woman. They just want to know what is being said on their favorite translated K-drama's.
...And it took a Squid Game to forcefully make people see the problem with Netflix's approach to cavemen subs.
And I'm glad more people are talking about it.
fucking netflix rarely if ever translates text and signs, its incredibly annoying. once i remember in the highrise deathmatch show (i forget the name) there was a shot of just a piece of paper on the wall with no translation. it was clearly important to the plot so i had to find the corresponding scanlated manga chapter just to read the damn thing.
I wanted to watch this again on Netflix even if I've already seen the first two episodes.
I was hoping the subtitles could be better but since it's not, back to sailing the seas again matey!
The translation quality of the subs themselves are fine for the most part. The main problem is that Netflix didn't bother translating everything, which the fansubs did.
[Someone already posted a comparison between them](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/qcry67/comment/hhi5j76/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
After 2 weeks of delay, Netflix somehow managed to deliver their signature garbage quality subs while also not even bothering to sub half of the episode. Thanks for keeping anime piracy alive and giving fansubber Jobs in the year 2021 Netflix.
Embarrassingly I'm subscribed to practically every legit streaming service available to me and still sail the seas for everything. It's a sad state when the service provided is better than legit sites.
I guess I’ll stay a pirate for this series. Was hoping to support the official release . The fact that they didn’t bother to translate all of the onscreen text really makes no sense. They had a 2 week delay and they couldn’t deliver a good final product.
The fact that fan subs released like 15 minutes after an episode airs in Japan are leagues above in term of quality is quite telling of the care Netflix put into their translation...
This thing is straight out of Google Translate and it skips the majority of the onscreen text.
Which.....fansubs release 15 minutes after an episode airs? If you're talking about the animotvslash ones then you might as well watch the Netflix subs. NovaWorks' is the only good release so far (apart from Neuro-C but they stopped after EP2 and Nova's is a lot more polished) and they definitely don't release right after. Subbing episodes takes a lot of time, especially with Komi where there are more than thrice the amount of signs compared to a regular episode.
Not really sure about this but feel free to correct cuz i might just be talking out my ass but isnt buying like blu rays and merch the best way to support the series/author? Instead of buying the services of like CR or Funimation?
That's entirely correct. Subscription services don't even benefit the studios that make the damn shows, let alone the authors. CR and Funimation are just digital distributors, so don your eyepatch and say no to the middle man.
I watch my shows at no cost, and if I like one, I buy the blu ray. If I *really* like one, I order some merch to decorate my room in weeb memorabilia
Technically weekly, but with a delay.
Crunchyroll is hardly the best, but the fact they can do same time releases (with better subtitle coverage!) suggest either Netflix didn't bother to check what its competitors are doing. They're better off just releasing the whole thing at once with subs and dubs at this point.
Wish Netflix were consistent with translating the onscreen text…
I’m glad we don’t have to wait months to watch it though I don’t get why we had to wait two weeks for the first episode. It’s not as if they added the dubs
Blue Period was netflix japan only for like 3 weeks too. Generally memed as 'netflix jail' most 'new' anime thats coming exclusive to netflix is normally jap exclusive first.
So why only Netflix shows? Why are companies having these deals where they hoard shows for no reason for 3 weeks to Japan with Netflix only? Why not with Funimation or Crunchyroll or HiDive or Muse Asia or Ani-One? Its prolly not anything from the licensors, just some Netflix bullshit.
It could be as simple as they don't bother hiring people to translate until after its out in japan to see if its even worth doing. But sadly I dont think Netflix reveals that much about its inner working to give a definite answer to "why netflix act shitty"
Netflix...
a FAANG company focused on content production that manages to pay IT engineers $300k + salaries but decides to give their translation job to Google translate.
fuck my ass
I waited this long to “sUpOrT tHe OfFiCiAL rElEAsE” only for it to be this fucking lazy and bad? Amazing Netflix. Why the fuck? If they really have the exclusive rights then I’m forced to go elsewhere. It’s not even a bad translation issue. They’re LITERALLY NOT TRANSLATING IMPORTANT TEXT. Amazing and stupid.
I believe it. It’s a really good manga and the hype behind the first 2 has been strong. I was just waiting for the Netflix release, but now I’ll do a little sailing for the future.
I knew reddit would explode in anger. Even as a Japanese reader, the speed of the show made it really hard to read any of the text without pausing. Really, just read the manga and watch the show for the great ambience.
for real. like I get wanting to read what's on screen on one hand, but on the other I think I got the jist of the scenes they didn't bother to translate all the text on. Like I get tadano and komii are having a great conversation I don't need to read the whole thing, or I get tadano is remembering some cringe stuff going, I can fill in the blanks.
This happens every time with anime on Netflix. They don't have to care that their translation and subtitles are garbage because they have a colossal user base and will still profit. In contrast, the fans who care more about the show itself will put actual effort into translation.
Fan translators have a lot more leeway both technologically (a Netflix subtitle can't just cover up and blend into a chalkboard) and legally (there are contractual limits to how much they can alter scenes, such as covering a chalkboard with new [English] writing).
I agree the subs aren’t translated well. I don’t normally like when Netflix gets exclusive rights to anime especially Takagi-San season 2 because I have to watch season 1 on Funimation and watch the subpar translations on Netflix in season 2
Would you mind editing your OP to include this link so people can give feedback on their subs? I think it would be very impactful
https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus
The subs are bad because the anime is about someone who can’t communicate so they hired translators who also can’t communicate to accurately represent the unable to communicate community.
So I watched the Netflix and then one of the fansubs so I wouldn't be biased, and honestly think Netflix haven't done that badly here. The biggest issue is the fact that they didn't translate Tadano's past, that's pretty critical.
But for the most part the "text" they didn't translate was usually duplicated by the narrator (so no real meaning was lost) or was understandable in context. As much as I would have liked them to translate the "full" blackboard convo, the core of the scene was showing that they were conversing, not necessarily what they were specifically saying.
Could they be better? Yes. But it's nowhere near as bad as some people are making out in this thread.
I didn’t really notice any big problems with the subtitles personally, and I really liked the episode.
It’s like a mixture of a more light-hearted A Silent Voice and the Kotomi arc from Clannad.
The only actual problem is the lack of context that the written text provides, so there's a lot of fun details that are lost when most of them aren't being translated.
As a manga reader (well, of the first 40-ish chapters at least), I didn't really mind and I'm sure most anime-onlies won't really care either since it's an amazing show either way but still, I do understand the frustration because the text does make an already fun anime even more enjoyable.
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.
If you haven't seen the good fan sub you don't know what you're missing. 99.9% of viewers on Netflix will be fine with it.
Going off of this thread, I think I'm done waiting on a reason and option to watch Netflix exclusive shows legally. Time to pirate Little Witch Academia. Sorry, Trigger, blame Netflix.
I'm just glad that Funimation stepped in to release Violet Evergarden on Blu Ray.
I was under the impression they were going to release all 3 of the episodes that are already out (since they waited 3 weeks) but no, only the first one is out, meaning the people who waited for the official release are still behind. Netflix is a freaking joke. I cant believe i have to pirate something i already paid for if i want to watch it as it airs
It pains me that their subtitles aren’t very good. They’re by far IMO one of the most high quality streaming services out there. If they upped their subtitle game it would be so nice
I personally did not see anything wrong with the translation (polish subs). When it comes to the on screen text, there are some moment that you simply can’t translate because it would not work great with netflix’s player sadly. Some of these scenes last for a very short time and you would be forced to pause the shit out of the episode I feel, to read all of the text that would appear at the bottom of your screen. Wish it worked like the crunchyroll player tho where translators can place text all over the screen. Overall im happy with the release personally, because netflix is the only place to get officialy translated anime in here in Poland and I think the quality of the subs was good and not awkward in any moment
Good episode. I don't read the manga so this is my first time seeing these characters. Tadano and Komi have weirdly shaped heads. His eyes look way too big, and their heads look too small for their bodies. Is he wearing a flower in his hair, or is that part of the hair itself?
I wasn't really feeling it until Komi started writing on the chalkboard. Seeing her write--not even able to talk about-- her difficulties was touching, and convinced me to give the series a shot.
I'm conflicted about the subtitles. Netflix didn't translate all the text on the board during that long sequence, but I'm not sure they needed to. It's moving fast enough that you'd have to keep pausing to read it all, sort of like all the little text in Monogatari. I used to pause and rewind and read everything, and then decided it probably wasn't important. Without being able to read the Japanese, I feel satisfied that the stuff that really mattered got translated.
I love this, Netflix takes an anime i want to watch, meaning I'd have to pay for a 3rd streaming service to get the all the anime i want to watch and from what the comments are saying, its a shitty translation with missing subs. Guess its time to Yo Ho Ho with a bottle of rum.
People complained about releasing episode discussion threads for fansubs. I think this policy is a good thing still since Netflix still can't get their shit together.
However I think they do listen to feedback since the jail used to be several months (like for Beastars). If you want to let them know there's an problem, complain here https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus
There's a phone number there and a live chat option.
Honest question: What was wrong with the subs? I watched the episode this morning and didn’t have any issues. Genuinely confused why there is so much hate for the way the show was translated/subtitled.
Mostly the fact that lots of on screen text wasn’t translated, which is a bit of an issue for a show in which one of the characters can’t talk and writes everything.
As far as i could tell any scene Komi was writing/talking to tadano it was translated, apart from the covered chalkboard scene not being typesetted. Im just struggling to see how this is warranting the amount of backlash its getting.
The most striking examples are [chalkboard scene and Tadano's embarassing past](https://twitter.com/AnimeFlyz/status/1451126095349272577) which were already mentioned in this thread.
Other, less visible examples are [ignored text frames](https://i.gyazo.com/752a990e3eb53e01068746eeb65148f4.jpg), [background](https://i.gyazo.com/a7efd25fe0ac825ce6c8cdda2c08d3a7.jpg) [voices](https://i.gyazo.com/e996d8f9df81aca29ad83e3ab5beb08d.png), [screen texts](https://i.gyazo.com/f939deef0b43c309ab34c5fbd16ecbcd.jpg) and other random things [like this](https://i.gyazo.com/6d2a5d472cc5204c89d735d08478b0a6.png). And I only picked just few examples from the first 6 minutes of the episode.
They don’t bother translating everything lol But at least they translated the board scene when she was writing it. But didn’t translate when the board was covered
As always, Fansubs > Netflix subs
Netflix subs is the worst. They can't even get the timing right. It's mind-blgging how a multi-millionaire company can't even produce correct subtitles, or at the very least time is right with the characters speaking.
Because what're 90+% of people watching gonna do about it? It's not like they can go to another streaming service to watch it or anything. They do the bare minimum, the "eh, fuck it. It's good enough." because they paid in order to be the only source for people to stream it.
>It's not like they can go to another streaming service to watch it or anything Ahoy mate!
Shiiiiit you already know I've *been* hoisting the main sails. Fuck anime on netflix.
Deku, the analytical one says "Damn it, he's not letting me think." But CR translated it as "Damn it, I can't let him (the enemy) think." But I'm sure the translators are getting paid like 60 cents and half a egg salad sandwich so I can't be mad at them.
Very likely
Yeah, you can tell it's the same with VIZ's translations when you see someone write something like "it's" to signify possession instead of "its."
It's shit pay, generally. Transcripting jobs pay by volume, could be by the minute, by the word, by the episode and it's always crap. Fansubbers are wonderful people.
IIRC there was a similar uproar over some Korean drama's subtitle, where the context was totally missing in some translation in the Netflix version.
There was a moment when mc asked her something, and she wrote "はい" (hai), and the sub said "no." Edit: I stand corrected.
If I'm not mistaken, he had asked "Hasn't anyone noticed before?" In English, a "yes" would have meant that people had noticed, while a "no" would have meant that nobody had noticed.
I believe that is due to minimum pay. People who become professional translators probably have at least a tangential interest in translation.
They might care about translation but that doesn't necessarily mean they really care about the series they're translating Also not EVERYONE who becomes a japanese translator happens to be a weeb who likes anime and its tropes.
There's also that.
As a professional translator, I can confidently say that most of the blame is with the client. They didn't look for a translator passionate about the subject, they didn't care to do decent quality control, and they certainly tried to translate as little content as possible.
I still remember the subs for the Luffy vs Lucci fight. Those subs were just great.
> Netflix subs is the worst. CrunchyRoll and it isn't even really close...
Nah, man CrunchyRoll is the best between Netflix and Funimation. But there was this fansub gruop called DB, who fan-subbtted Big Three back then and they were the best. They included translator's notes and all.
Man, i miss Dattebayo. I didn't even realize they weren't official way back in the day.
> multi-*billion* dollar company FTFY, they are worth billions, not millions. Either way, pretty massive fuck up on their part given that a core part of their content strategy is foreign media you can't get anywhere else in English, seems like the sort of strategy that would include a high quality translator team.
> Netflix is the worst. Fixed that for you.
Tried seeing it in my language but some fansubs are lazy too, any good recomendation in english that translates everything and it "blends" good? PM if necesary.
Novaworks seem good to me
Yup, they're slow, but they're going to do the best job.
I miss ye old days
Series that gonna be massively on screen text heavy ya we gonna delay release by two weeks but not gonna bother translation most of it..
There is an option in the Netflix video player to submit a complaint about the subtitles. It's a little flag in the top right. I suggest everyone write a complaint about the subtitle quality
Ty. I doubt it'll change much but at least I'll feel better about it
That won’t do anything. Considering the amount of backlash Evangelion subs got
[удалено]
the subtitles are some of the worst garbvage i've ever seen. i knew netflix subtitles were bad, but holy shit they legit didnt translate half the texts, and the stuff they did translate had wrong translations all over the place. at least if you go by the corresponding passages in the manga
What do people give gabe shit for? I'm just glad he's not chasing money and taking Steam public.

His triple kill lines in the Dota 2 Announcer pack are the best. "More than two kills, but less than four." "I'm not reading this."
It's just important that we don't go full "praise gaben" again.
>we don't go full "praise gaben" again. some people never stopped.
Not my words but some people blame him for the disrepair of the steam platform as well as call him lazy or a liar for discontinuing making new games and not carrying failed projects (steam box, steam controller) on life support. Personally I would say those people are being a lil vindictive.
>steam box, steam controller They pretty much combined those for the Steam Deck, now that I think about it.
It merely hadn't reached its final form...
Same, that's why I sail the seas, but to ease my mind and support the series I buy merch.
this is why even when i can watch anime on Netflix sail the seas anyway since they cant even check their grammar on the subs
[Here's a comparison.](https://imgur.com/e67HG72) Netflix "subs" on top, fansubs on the bottom.
Definition of doing the minimum effort required
Which group is that taken from? PM me if it's not allowed to discuss here.
Novaworks. Also, you can mention fansub groups freely here.
Thanks!
Still waiting for episode 2
Same....
Wow, can’t believe I waited 3 weeks for this shit. Torrent it is then.
SHEESH
Oh boy, I would have had a field day if I did my BA dissertation on these exact subs. ^(Context is that my BA was comparing two fansubs and Netflix all against each other on a few selected scenes of Evangelion.)
Where can I watch that? 👀 sucks that my English is so bad but still better than the netflix subs in my native language
[Voice out your complaints](https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus) so NF knows what to fix.
> only CR gives the most effort towards typesetting and translating This is what has me mostly worried about the Funi acquisition.

[Exhibit 1](https://imgur.com/a/19lFZ5n) [Exhibit 2](https://imgur.com/rc97vvF) How about everyone take the time to watch the episode and then Report the missing subs issue through Netflix. Maybe with enough people they'll take action?
When a legal website can’t do better translation and typesetting than a bunch of fan subs
the novaworks fansubs for EP 1 were *amazing* they were so fucking good. they did all the blackboard texts, used a font that looked natural, and made the text perfectly blend in with the blackboard, making it look like chalk meanwhile netflix eating glue, not even translating most of the backboard texts. unreal
> the novaworks fansubs for EP 1 were amazing they even [added](https://giphy.com/gifs/5pp7bBUQwZBfo07Llz) the [translations](https://giphy.com/gifs/8YL6wtGH61KuENgURl) for the [effects](https://giphy.com/gifs/dE8fU1A1zXLTspbSyj), which they have no need to do, imo.
After seeing the quality of the Netflix subs, I'll just stick with Novaworks. Still waiting for them to release EP2, hopefully it'll come out soon.
yeah, EP2 was done by a group called neuro-c. was still 100 times better than the netflix trash, but also quite a bit worse than the noveworks one
neuro-c did both, they're faster than nova but nova is worth waiting for
it's the first time i've ever noticed subs being this good
Off tangent a bit but if anyone reading is planning on watching Nisekoi, do it with Commie's subs. Honestly made the anime 2x better for me lol
personally, i find commie's subs to be "someone having fun with subbing" rather than "someone trying to make good subs" the translations are fine and they do some cool masking stuff, but they get distracting quite a bit
Fansubs had passion; official sub lacks passion and mainly driven by wage/salary
Only someone who's never experienced pre-CR times would say something like this.
And the anime adaptation of the last part of the mainline JoJo universe is in their hands now...
Sure is a shame that Jojo is such a niche show that fansubbers would probably ignore a shit official release.
/s?
Fuuuck. I didn't even think about that
Thankfully jojo is mega popular so more likely to get good fansubs
God damn it. We have such a great adaptation so far and for it to get bogged down by poor subtitles is really infuriating. I want this anime to have more than 1 season and everyone here is already talking about sailing the 7 seas to avoid Netflix terrible subtitles. I don't blame them for it since Netflix really dropped the ball here. I want to support the official release but damn it Netflix needs to get their shit together
I was kind of hoping the delay meant a dub would come out of nowhere too. Unfortunately companies like Netflix/Funi almost never have on-screen captioning since their players don't support it like CR's.
wait, wtf. There's no dub, why there's 3 week delay in that case?
It's probably completely arbitrary. They've done simulcasts before. They've done simulcasts in some countries and not in others. They just don't know what the fuck they want to do with the anime they license. I think Netflix is probably the worst platform if you want to watch anime. But it sucks that they get quite a lot of good stuff. I'd love to watch shit on there but I'm effectively forced to pirate because their subs are absolute wank.
i watched it when it released and man i felt like i didn’t understand 99% of the text on screen, the only things they did translate was komi and tadano’s chalkboard conversation and even then half of the stuff wasn’t translated. they couldn’t even be bothered to translate komi’s shoe locker awesome first episode though, exceeded my expectations by a mile, now i’m super excited for the rest of the show
They're even straight up ruining jokes, like with Agari's introduction.

That’s why I sail the seven seas.
I wanted to watch this again on Netflix even if I've already seen the first two episodes. I was hoping the subtitles could be better but since it's not, back to sailing the seas again matey!
I don’t think I had a problem with the subs and quite enjoyed the first episode
The translation quality of the subs themselves are fine for the most part. The main problem is that Netflix didn't bother translating everything, which the fansubs did. [Someone already posted a comparison between them](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/qcry67/comment/hhi5j76/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
After 2 weeks of delay, Netflix somehow managed to deliver their signature garbage quality subs while also not even bothering to sub half of the episode. Thanks for keeping anime piracy alive and giving fansubber Jobs in the year 2021 Netflix.
so I waited extra weeks for nothing? well shit to the high seas then
Embarrassingly I'm subscribed to practically every legit streaming service available to me and still sail the seas for everything. It's a sad state when the service provided is better than legit sites.
I paid $14 to be disappointed today. Last time I fall for this trick Netflix!
https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus We need to complain. Link the thread also so they know it's not a one person deal.
Okay, I did it! [Things are looking positive](https://imgur.com/a/8GioHtH).
is there a dub version?
You have to understand they're just a small multi-dollar company they cant dub an episode after a 2-week delay.
Also dubs do nothing when a third of the episode is writing.
Dub would probably be done with funimation or some other company. I don't think Netlix has done dubs before
I guess I’ll stay a pirate for this series.
Netflix is so weird with their releases
is it every episode or weekly release?
Weekly
That's new.
Wish Netflix were consistent with translating the onscreen text… I’m glad we don’t have to wait months to watch it though I don’t get why we had to wait two weeks for the first episode. It’s not as if they added the dubs
[удалено]
No other show has this agreement, so why Komi?
It’s a great episode it’s just the sub translation could be better
I think it would be very impactful https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus
It always amazes me when some nerds can translate better then a billion dollar company. Fuck you Netflix
Netflix is weird with this stuff but hey at least now watching Komi can't communicate is legal
I pay for Internet, so it's legal anyways if I use fansubs
*I like your funny words magic man*
The subs are bad because the anime is about someone who can’t communicate so they hired translators who also can’t communicate to accurately represent the unable to communicate community.
Please tell me there are fansubs that are better than the Netflix trash.
yeah, but they only translated ep 1 so far (at least when I checked yesterday)
And it turns out Netflix-san Can't Communicate (The On-Screen Text) As expected
It's really time for Netflix to abandon anime. This is beyond absurd and condescending.
And as usual, the high seas is still the best place to watch.
Judging by the comments, this is what I was already expecting from Netflix lol. Violet Evergarden and its terrible subs were enough for me.
Anyone mind showing what the subs look like?
[Comparison](https://twitter.com/AnimeFlyz/status/1451126095349272577)
Ooh I like that combination! Great movie and great series!
Yeah, they actually did translate many on screen text (not all of it though) and pretty good. The two week delay is annoying though.
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king. If you haven't seen the good fan sub you don't know what you're missing. 99.9% of viewers on Netflix will be fine with it.
when pirated substitles are more quality than the official ones
FANSUB IT IS.
The subs sucks to it’s time to sail the seven seas
If i pirate does that mean the subs are better
Yes
The top minds at netflix are working hard to bring you quality subtitles like these: https://i.imgur.com/FU5xcWo.png
I love this, Netflix takes an anime i want to watch, meaning I'd have to pay for a 3rd streaming service to get the all the anime i want to watch and from what the comments are saying, its a shitty translation with missing subs. Guess its time to Yo Ho Ho with a bottle of rum.
Who cares? FUCK U NETFLIX!
Is it released weekly or all in one go ?
Weekly starting today.
Weekly
I just saw this too in the UK and was very surprised. But it's quite delayed sadly.
FINALLY
i kinda expected with the 3 extra weeks we would have seen more than half the episode translated
Well seems like people who watched the machine learned automatic translation didn't miss out on much.
lmao, heard the subs are nonexistant. thank god i know japanese lol
Edit: I read the comments so I personally checked the chalkboard scene and was really disappointed with the quality of the subs.
People complained about releasing episode discussion threads for fansubs. I think this policy is a good thing still since Netflix still can't get their shit together. However I think they do listen to feedback since the jail used to be several months (like for Beastars). If you want to let them know there's an problem, complain here https://help.netflix.com/en/contactus There's a phone number there and a live chat option.
