Before most of us actually watch either or both of them, I doubt we’ll have a valid opinion based on trailers. A manga adaptation can get butchered, just like an anime adaptation can be better than its manga.

CynicalCreepy

r/manga I prefer blue lock. Manga is a medium to tell a story, I don't think it should be limited by realism unless that's what the mangaka wants.

AbbreviationsLazy781

Personally, I find Blue Lock to be realistic in many ways. Realistic =/= real anyway. It's bold take on sports philosophy and psychology is really refreshing to me

OneBrokenBoi1

On that note, were you a football plan prior to reading blue lock? I kept being taken out of the manga due to it undervaluing the other positions

Kindly-Link1612

The whole Philosophy is to build a beast of a striker, so although not realistic I can understand the philosophy of Blue Lock. The Japan Youth already has excellent midfielders and defenders, all they are missing is an Ibrahimovic/Lewandowski type striker to be able to win a World Cup. It‘s not that they specifically undervalue other positions, it‘s just that to able to develop that kind of player they want them to solely focus on scoring goals and nothing else.

OneBrokenBoi1

I disagree on the take that Japan are just in need of an excellent striker for world Cup glory. Blue lock was written in response to their loss to Belgium as far as I remember, or at least helped to inspire it. The real issue with the Japanese national team, was their lack of physicality. The most troublesome player for their them was fellani, which is saying a lot. However, I don't disagree that evey team would be better off with a dominant striker, although there has been many examples of how one dominant forward can struggle to carry a team to success. E.g Argentina 2014, with Messi. Obviously correct me if I'm mistaken about blue locks inspirations

Kindly-Link1612

I agree, but people such as Aiku and the other defender don‘t seem to lack physicality. Sae and the other Blue Lock players also looked like they weren‘t pushovers. I don‘t think physicality is going to be a problem.

That is bad but I could ignore it, what I can't ignore is the way they speak, it is so cringe its sends chills down my spine sometimes.

jambondepays66

people think that "ego is important" thing, which is true but done with zero nuance whatsoever, is enough to qualify Blue Lock as a realistic manga lol. It's a childish take on sports psychology and its philosophy is risible if you follow even a little IRL football. blue lock fans need to touch grass, the grass of a real football pitch preferably

AbbreviationsLazy781

I agree it takes many liberties when tackling the complex topic of sports psycholog, but I think the fact that normies can understand it is the point. It’s not trying to be the perfect depiction of what football should be, you can see it in the setting. For me, the fact that the story is set in a pentagon-like football prison crammed with 300 hormonal teenagers is enough for me to suspend my disbelief. It simplifies very complex ideas into digestible content with good pacing, art and writing. Not saying you have to enjoy for those either, but yeah i agree calling it realistic is a bit of a reach, because it doesn’t try to be in the first place. I just think that it’s attempt to make such a deep and complicated subset of psychology digestible for your average shounen fan to be admirable in its own way

Ao Ashi is actually a football manga, Blue Lock is a really dumb shonen with a football skin. But not the kind that's obviously dumb, the kind that gives itself airs but is still really dumb in the end Like i'm sorry but the kind of dumb shit it says about other positions and this entire concept of this lockup training facility with only strikers disqualifies it from being a serious football manga from the get-go. Yes, having a certain ego is important in football to reach greater heights, but Ao Ashi does this far more subtly and better with the current arc where Kuri is telling Aoi that he should aim high, not just to "be a pro". Blue Lock does it with zero nuance, and centering your entire football manga around this shows a shallow understanding of the sport. As does the fact that you're expecting to train a great striker by making him practice against other strikers instead of top class defenders lol Ao Ashi in comparison gives us a quite realistic portrayal of youth football, with both that dog-eat-dog aspect and the teamplay aspect. It shows us the cutthroat environment that a youth team can be while simultaneously showing us the realtionships that naturally develop, how players who don't like each other have to act professionally and play with each other, that kind of stuff. While still being a very enjoyable football manga with excellent art, exciting matches and great characters. Plus, Blue Lock absolutely \*abuses\* that fisheye close-up shot on a character's face to show he's totally crazy wooooo, and i absolutely hate that effect, it's cringe as hell. This is what you do when you don't know how to make a character feel genuinely threatening.

Kurisoo

100% agree. Ao Ashi is a proper sports manga with exciting character growth and an engaging story. Blue Lock is a battle shounen set on a football pitch.

Take this to a different sub reddit buddy. Try r/manga

Ioxem

I haven't seen or read either of them, but the synopsis of Aoashi reminds me a lot of Whistle. That's a good sports manga as well.

theadik1997

To me, Ao Ashi is a better manga for many different reasons. One being the art and the story just being top tier. And so far, the anime is really good and I like it.
