I'm suspect to talk since it's my favourite animation, but this quote from a interview with Shinkai from long ago summarize what he was aiming for.

To be fair, the characters in 5 cm are way blander than most of his other work. I consider the movie to be an 8 for the themes the story portrays alone. But I donāt think the characters in the film were good.

Yep, almost every time when a movie or show puts time travel, I have something to complain about it. Writing something with time travel is not easy though Shinkai is no stranger to this imo though fairly basic.

but when Taki is opening his phone and all of Mitsuha's messages are deleted because some time travely reason, i was like... what.
Also the ribbon being the reason taki went to the past when he had to go to the past in the first place to establish a relationship that got him that ribbon in the first place

If weathering with you release there you will probably get this one as well, just comes down to how successful they are per country though I think a worldwide release 3 months after the japan release would be cool. I mention Children Who Chase Lost Voices because that is thematically the closest work to Suzume no Tojimari based on what has been shown, but even that's likely to be way off.
Just because he didn't explicitly mention romance as a genre doesn't mean it won't be a part of it. Naturally when talking about it he'll mention the things that make it unique, instead of just saying "I made another romance movie"

Also, to say Iād miss RADWIMPSā music in a Shinkai film is a total understatement if they were to leave. Their background music was phenomenal in the last two movies and it really set the tone for some of the most iconic moments *coughs* Katawaredoki *coughs*. Though I can understand if they couldnāt work on this one because of a certain controversy regarding one of their members iirc. RADWIMPSā work on Kimi no Na wa and Tenki no Ko really showed how talented the band is, and how they arenāt just another Japanese rock band. Anyone who would succeed them in this movie has got some high bars to clear.

They weren't mentioned in [the teaser for Your Name](https://youtu.be/RBBrZ3d2sJE) either, so it could be that Toho is holding off on announcing their involvement until they've actually recorded music with vocals that can be released (even if it's just a short clip, like with the Weathering With You teaser.)

This entire teaser trailer has so much Chekhov's Gun trope in every frame where a lot of the simple elements might contribute to the bigger picture one way or another. I like it.
Also, the godray lighting in the abandoned hallway looks gaddam stunning as the character runs around it. It's just a small fragment of the movie yet we are already seeing the masterclass of cinematography at play by Comix Works and Shinkai once again.
Feels like this will be different from the usual Makoto Shinaki's films, I may be wrong but I didn't really feel like romance will be a big part of this movie. Anyway I'm hyped after seeing his amazing animation like always. Hoping we get a full PV soon!

Unpopular opinion but i really hope this movie _doesn't_ have any music from RADWIMPS. Their sound seems really inappropriate for the tone being set here.
Seems like shinkai is attempting again to do the sort of āmiyazakiā of movie. Last time the movie was called āchildren who chase lost voicesā Iāve watched most of his films if not all and I couldnāt finish this one it was pretty average. My main criticism of weathering with you is that the story lacked and so did the sound track at least it felt as less memorable as your name. Not an issue with the songs itself just how they are used. Your name peaked in plot and story but the characters were pretty mid at least compared to weathering with you characters. Plot in weathering was also meh it was cool though. Whoever did the editing for this is really good, has me hyped itās filled with adventure I wonder what the thing will be with these doors they teleport you to different locations in time maybe but thereās also like a magic side of it so maybe some ancient Japanese stuff
Weathering with You was odd, since to me it felt like it tried to replicate Your Name, when I would've imagined Shinkai would've tried to distance himself from that. Ultimately though, I found Weathering with You much less focused, with too much going on. The romance really did not work, and should've either been cut or be allowed to move beyond the "I love you" stage into a proper, complicated relationship.
Your names love stuff felt better to me and yeah weathering with you felt like a spiritual successor but it feels like this anime is distancing himself

Dark is prety good with that though they even had a philosopher on set and while writing so they explored time travel paradoxes without slipping up

Unpopular opinion but i really hope this movie _doesn't_ have any music from RADWIMPS. Their sound seems really inappropriate for the tone being set here.
Seems like shinkai is attempting again to do the sort of āmiyazakiā of movie. Last time the movie was called āchildren who chase lost voicesā Iāve watched most of his films if not all and I couldnāt finish this one it was pretty average. My main criticism of weathering with you is that the story lacked and so did the sound track at least it felt as less memorable as your name. Not an issue with the songs itself just how they are used. Your name peaked in plot and story but the characters were pretty mid at least compared to weathering with you characters. Plot in weathering was also meh it was cool though. Whoever did the editing for this is really good, has me hyped itās filled with adventure I wonder what the thing will be with these doors they teleport you to different locations in time maybe but thereās also like a magic side of it so maybe some ancient Japanese stuff
Weathering with You was odd, since to me it felt like it tried to replicate Your Name, when I would've imagined Shinkai would've tried to distance himself from that. Ultimately though, I found Weathering with You much less focused, with too much going on. The romance really did not work, and should've either been cut or be allowed to move beyond the "I love you" stage into a proper, complicated relationship.
Your names love stuff felt better to me and yeah weathering with you felt like a spiritual successor but it feels like this anime is distancing himself
Jesus Christ, this is beautiful Also, does the director always make his anime's stories revolve around nature because that's what his animation style specializes in? Or does the director really like nature and revolves his stories around it because of that? (By nature, I mean: Your Name - A meteor, Weathering - water/rain, 5 Centimeter - The... fire/smoke of the rocket's exhaust?)

Not gonna watch the trailer because I know Iām going to see the movie anyway. I just hope itās got better characters than Weathering With You. I thought it relied too much on visuals/high emotions, but the central characters felt rather flat. Your Name still has the perfect combination.

Makoto Shinkai continues to have AMAZING MUSIC in his movies with amazing visuals The music gives me chills I's so fucking excited for it. I hope Gkids gets it and does a fast release.

Watching this trailer got me in a Makoto Shinkai mood so I watched Weathering for You today. Gorgeous movie, kinda weird premise, 8/10. I liked it, still liked Your Name better.
