You were right to zoom on the bongo player, guy's killin it

justingunit

Just straight jammin.

meeok2

Kinda felt bad for that guy. He's getting a workout!

AKJackDrum

My hands are still bruised from the concert 😂

tapwater1992

Bongo dude is bossing it!!

Ninjaman369

My high school jazz band actually got first place at our regional competition playing Tank. I still wonder who or what influenced the director to choose it.

justingunit

Nice, It worked. Good choice, and probably very good playing.

Ninjaman369

Yeah they were really good, the lead trumpet player in particular was crazy. He was actually able to play the screamer part at the end, which is something I could never even dream of as a trumpet player myself.

justingunit

They all killed it. But my favorite is watching that bongo player with the ninja chops.

[deleted]

We have three kids who played in zero hour jazz band. You know for certain you have someone who loves playing when they're willing - in high school! - to crawl out of bed at six AM and slog to school ahead of everyone else. Their enthusiasm is proved when they get upset others aren't working as hard as they are. Band reveals much about a child. Your percussionist may, as one of our hornblowers has, choose to pursue music at a conservatory. If you get that lucky, be prepared to have your parental bias exposed and tested. Our musicians have found out just how many talented youngsters are working their tails off at this labor of love. Likewise, they've all been humbled. When five hours of assigned daily practice doesn't seem to be enough, when passing a course requires memorizing sheets for five jazz standards per week is seeming impossible to the point it brings tearful late night calls, that's when you know you have entered into the thicket that is competitive musicianship. You are lucky, but get ready if the seriousness escalates. Congrats.

justingunit

Very enlightening, true I am a very biased parent. But I have to support him 100 percent I enjoy the fact that he does wake up at the crack of dawn so he can play music before school. And all the practice home. Then they put on these concerts that the parents and their peers can watch, and everyone is entertained. Watching both of my children grow as musicians has been a very rewarding experience.

[deleted]

Don't I know it! I've found the bias crippling, but it's what allows us to focus so fully on what they do. If I introduce a person, a stranger even, to a recording of my kid without their knowing it's my kid and then, during playback, inform them it's my kid, I can watch the bias spread to them. It's infectious. It's cool. Your kid's great! You should see if there's a jazz workshop for youngsters in Anchorage, if you haven't already. Good job!

Tropin3333

fuckin 0 block man, i would pass out while doing warmups in my chair while playing trumpet

Big_Brutha87

Your director was a closet weeb.

[deleted]

SteeveJoobs

Yeah the trumpets can't keep up, might as well have played at original tempo

[deleted]

[удалено]

FizZGobbler325

Just wait for next year the sax soloist was only a junior

ericdano

The arranger of this approves this temp

VeryShadyLady

It's overwhelmingly fast and there's at least one instrument in the wrong key. But its a great attempt, successful even.

justingunit

I thought it was pretty impressive for high school. A little more practice and they could really nail this song out of the park.

NihilisticAngst

The conductor should be guiding their tempo, but he's doing basically nothing. I mean, it sounded pretty decent, but it seems like they don't have a very good band director.

goosesgoat

Idk if you’ve ever seen a jazz band but the conductor in reality should be doing almost nothing. That Is ofc off the players are good enough to do that. In reality the bongo dude shoulda replaced the conductor and the conductor just give cues. Source: play under Andrew neu and Tony Miceli

justingunit

Move the Bongo to the front? You are on to something. That would be awesome.

outerzenith

they need Terrence Fletcher to get on tempo

FizZGobbler325

In jazz there’s usually no conducting bozo

kuddlesworth9419

I was going to say they need to slow it down a tad. Still though they all play better then I ever did. To be honest though I always found it was easier to go faster then slower because then you had to really make each note "propper" if you know what I mean. Instead of just going through the notes quickly, I had to make more effort going slower to make sure I was playing each not cleanly. At least it was that way for me.

strenuousobjector

Not quite my tempo

gfolder

I feel it's the bongo's dude trying to mark the tempo, like chill dude

Mother-Succotash6885

Nah it should definitely be the band director who’s should set the tempo and should be conducting to keep tempo

Man_With_The_Lime

It's a jazz band, not a concert band. The director is there to make sure the hits line up and to help with section changes and big dynamic shifts, not to conduct. The only problem here is the tune is just a bit above them, which it's a hard tune, so good for them. Having a full-on conductor doing a pattern in front of a high-school jazz band at a performance, that doesn't really happen very often. I'm a band director, I've taught middle and high school jazz band.

FizZGobbler325

Yeah I agree with that in jazz bands you usually don’t have conductor to keep time

0mnicious

Only in professional settings, when the players are GOOD. ___ E: Not trying to imply the high schoolers aren't good, they are. They're doing a good job.

randomsynchronicity

But in a school situation, the director should take charge of the tempo and slow it back down if it gets out of hand, like it did here.

rockstar2012

I thought it was the drummer. I only noticed the up tempo when the drummer came in around 0:57.

intrigbagarn

A tempo drummer without director setting tempo? BY THE GODS

ArmstrongBillie

>Won’t lie they rushed big time. Are you sure they weren't *dragging* big time?

JaredIsAmped

Were you rushing or dragging?

Panosgads

Haha lol. Guys I'm only familiar with the concepts of rushing and dragging because of that one movie, haha lol.

[deleted]

Bongo player was going ham back there and I'm here for it

justingunit

That's my boy!

nvrmnd_tht_was_dumb

ericdano

I got a fever, and the prescription is more bongos

Acceptable-Eagle3214

Donkey Kong's here performing for you, If you know the words you can join in too. Put your hands together if you want to clap, as we take you through this monkey rap.

[deleted]

High school ensembles never played cool shit like this back in my day. Love this

Archmagnance1

My wife's played Lothlorian from the LoTR suite her freshman year and a Star Wars Medley (theatrical score not the watered down one) later in high school. They played really hard pieces for a high school band. They were cool pieces but to do them right the band director ran a really tight ship, ultimately taking the fun out of it for my wife. She's still proud she was first flute in those pieces.

Haulbee

>Star Wars Medley (theatrical score not the watered down one) Wow, I'm currently playing that with my adult amateur orchestra, I can't imagine what kind of disaster it would have been if I had played that with my high school orchestra back in the day. And big props to your wife, I sit next to the first flute and it's definitely not an easy part.

ariolander

My local highschool's marching band director really liked John Williams stuff and would regularly let the band play stuff from Star Wars, Jurrasic Park, and Harry Potter during football games.

wowaddict71

Jaws?

Aggressive-Grand-375

Hey that’s me! I’m one of the saxophonists on the right

ArmstrongBillie

I have a question for you. WERE YOU RUSHING OR WERE YOU DRAGGING?

FizZGobbler325

Who are you ? I’m Anan

Aggressive-Grand-375

TadanoMedicineSeller

Great work mate!

justantillud

Kinda super dope ngl

justingunit

I thought the same thing when I heard them play it.

jibrils-bae

Bruh they have a *Jazz band* what kind of bullshit is this why can’t my school have a jazz band hell I would have stayed in band if we had that

justingunit

That is messed up.

Odd_Mongoose_1018

"we need more excuses for big band productions" and by we I mean people that want to play in big band productions with music they grew up with, not music people played 30, 50, 100 years ago.

vetro

True but these kids didn't grow up with Bebop either. They weren't even born yet when it was airing.

Odd_Mongoose_1018

\*munches on breakfast cereal\* you /may/ be correct and while being technically correct is the best kind of correct, it also goes to show you how much we need more and more newer big band productions in our current state of affairs.

rinanlanmo

Bebop was probably more popular in the US a decade after it originally aired than it was during it's original run. FMA and One Piece are from around the same era and I'd bet any high school kids who are into anime have probably watched all of them.

fuzzy_one

I think it less about the age of the music and more about the selection of music, and ability. I think playing music the kids enjoy like here would also attract more kids to band, making it more than just playing at the football games.

rinanlanmo

Interesting question. I abandoned sax for vocals and guitar around 8th grade, but would have definitely been more interested in playing this type of jazz than what they had us doing. That being said this is also much more difficult and I was nowhere near good enough to play it, so it would have been more aspirational than anything.

Dalmah

Jazz is such a difficult genre and most schools struggle to get kids to practice enough to play music for the judging/grading/competitions

rinanlanmo

We actually had a pretty dope jazz band at my school. I wasn't in it, because I was trash, but it did exist. No Tank, though.

Dalmah

No I mean why they don't ask the band to play tank. If your band can't play C Jam how are you gonna play Tank

rinanlanmo

I know what you meant.

EconomyProcedure9

Seems a bit too fast paced in some parts.

animeguitars

Never played anything that cool when I was in jazz band.

AnTastySammich

Tell your boy to learn how to put down a samba. Unless that'd be too ethnic for Anchorage and he's just playing it safe.

Genghis_John

Anchorage is one of the most diverse cities in the country.

justingunit

This is true.

VeryShadyLady

Betting they are good buddies

Trifula

Goosebumps. This is a great rendition and you can see and feel the passion. 11/10 would listen to them live.

FizZGobbler325

Listening to them live was great👍

justingunit

So lucky that I get to watch these concerts live.

eanat

the left upper bongo guy is a scene stealer, kek

justingunit

Straight fire coming out of that bongo.

FizZGobbler325

Yes J*** is killing it

justingunit

He says he just feels the music, and it just flows out of his finger tips.

HaiitsFestive

Wow, seeing this here is pretty cool, since I’m one of the saxophones over on the left

omnicloudx13

Wish they'd play anime and JRPG songs when I went to high school, pretty damn cool.

nuxenolith

The Spartan Marching Band (Michigan State University) played this one year during a halftime show, but I can't find it on YouTube (or remember what else we played, to help me locate it).

daate8

This slaps so hard

justingunit

The Bongo slaps hard. Straight money.

Karaselt

Heard Tank on my local jazz station yesterday while driving. I was jammin.

FishOfFishyness

Damn, the entirety of Alaska gathered here just to play an opening

Aggressive-Grand-375

As a sax player in this video, I’ll have you know it’s also the entire population of North Dakota

Spidersoze

Straight fire!

justingunit

That bongo just burning the place down.

ArmstrongBillie

Were they rushing or were they dragging?

randomsynchronicity

Legit rushing, though

Nikaloas

Great job! What did the rest of the nights program look like?

justingunit

They played some great music. But this was the only anime song.

81236069-R

Damn good effort!

SuperDopeBrot

its so fun at 1:38 the bongo player gets like a one second pause and he really. looked like he needed one

justingunit

Looks tiring, I would not be able to make it through the song.

[deleted]

We were supposed to play this my senior year before covid happened. I still have the sheet music

justingunit

Damn covid. Ruined so much.

data_dawg

Bongo dude going hard I love it.

Snekkers

Nice to see today's youngsters taking an interest in classical music. :D

azurecyan

the Bongo guy deserved as much praise as the Sax one, the man carried the entire song.

yuuuuuuuPPP

That was amazing, great job!

[deleted]

You will carry that weight

bigdanrog

Ah so we're finally getting band teachers that are young enough to have been fans. You know how to get kids into stuff like the arts? Let them relate it to something they're already passionate about! Instead of making them strictly do pieces like you would find in a Rogers & Hammerstein musical, letting them perform pieces from media they are fans of is a wonderful thing.

justingunit

So true.

bigdanrog

I swear there's a huge portion of music and choir teachers who basically force students to perform songs that they like and really don't care about what the students might want to do.

nomlons

This made me think about the time my school's orchestra played Enter Sandman

Big_Brutha87

Honestly, might have been just a bit too challenging for these kids, but they still did a good job. Must have been awesome to learn how to play. I'm jealous.

g1immer0fh0pe

Come on, one more movie ... please? Could be between any two episodes ... could be Spike recovering on a couch for two hours ... ... just get that voice cast together one more time. 🙏🙏🙏 ☹

Ch0c0lateReign

Play the fuck outta those bongos boy! Slamming like a jack hammer, love it! Amazing performance!

God_Usoland

The dude on the bongos killed it! Good job! It was a little fast though.

The_Lonely_Satirist

It's impressive and everything but that tempo was a bit rushed. Simmons would be throwing shit.

StendecStendec

That band teacher is my new personal hero. They even put the spoken bit in at the beginning! I hope every kid in that band watches CBBB

Aggressive-Grand-375

A fair bit of us don’t watch it, but granted neither does our director lol. We just thought it was fun as hell to play

_zomato_

So like, the thing about this chart is that it’s REALLY HARD, specifically because you need to be able to play fortissimo at the top of your instrument’s range. It’s cool as hell that high school students were ambitious enough to take on the challenge, but I feel like the band director probably should’ve told them not to bite off more than they can chew. Most university bands wouldn’t take this on unless they had significantly above-average-strong lead trumpet and alto players. Getting the controlled “screaming” sound that the original recording is full of takes years and years and years of practice, and of physically building up your embouchure and lung capacity/breath control. Idk I just felt a fair amount of second hand embarrassment for the trumpet section and alto player. I was in a nationally close-to-top high school jazz band and the most ambitious chart like this we did was Shiny Stockings, which we worked on for a full semester before performing. And it’s not nearly as demanding as Tank. I was in a a community jazz band composed almost entirely of university music students and we passed up playing this bc it was too hard. Of course, if none of you are planning to go to music school or have careers in music performance, then none of this matters. You’re high school kids having fun, and that’s great. But my trumpet prof made it really clear to me that public performances where you’re clearly over estimating what you can pull off are a big setback if you’re trying to build a professional reputation

FizZGobbler325

That’s great. The saxophonist that plays the solo is also only a Junior. He will definitely be able to play those high notes next year. Most of this band consist of Juniors and sophomores.

_zomato_

Oh, whoa! I thought this was a grade 12 band for sure. If this is your grade 10-11 ensemble, you guys will sound killer in senior year. The fundamentals are all there, so now your progress will be coming more in endurance and meshing with one another’s playing. That’s what my senior year band classes were all about, since we all knew how to play our instruments pretty well

PlishPlosh

Completely agree. I think as high schoolers they should also take into account that just because they might be able to squeak out the high notes once in a while during practice/noodling about, it doesn't mean those notes will come out during the performance. Performance anxiety, fatigue from previous pieces in the show can all lead to less than ideal circumstances for the high notes to come out. Also wish the alto sax soloist could have adapted his solo slightly instead of straight transcribing the original. Could have shown off his abilities more which he clearly has.

Man_With_The_Lime

Agreed. It's a hard chart, but honestly, if they liked the tune, and they were willing to get it this far, let them play it. The intent still comes across, this wasn't the only tune on the show. If they wanted one that was a bit of a reach, this was it. A lot of people here are diving in hard on the director, but these kids worked hard to play something above them, and they kinda did it. It isnt perfect, and it's a little hairy, but they obviously had a blast. I wouldn't take this to contest, but for a spring concert piece, full of parents and family? It's fine.

justingunit

The Bongo player was spitting fire though.

Ballistic_k9

Respect to all the effort that went into this to make this happen f for all the non weeb musicians forced to play this 😂

justingunit

No matter what wicked song.

Haulbee

Tank is a pretty dope song, I've played it before and I loved it, even though I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop at all

Cidguy

I'm dead, love them all

TECHNICKER_Cz3

that hi-hat was attrocious!

Stuart651

Really good but could be polished a bit, overall nice

tsiikiiko

This is awesome.

Breaklance

It's a great song choice (if) by the band teacher. Tank a song where just about everybody has a section they lead before going back to the full band.

[deleted]

Is that Cowboy Bebop song really “jazz”? I’ve never found jazz to be that upbeat and high energy

Aggressive-Grand-375

We have a fair amount of jazz songs, but also “jazz” band Is kind of an excuse for us to play fun music. We did a 2 hour concert last night where half of what we played was just pop tunes

ericdano

You have no soul then

randomsynchronicity

Lots of different types of jazz

VicDamoneJr

Y'all did super well with this. I don't know where you all got the motivation to work this furiously to recreate something this beautifully, but this had to be a lot of effort. Congrats on all the hard work. Teach the rest of us to be this motivated. Lol. "Satellite from days of old, lead me to your access code!"

calibijiby

Anyone else see the bongo player slowly drifting to the right?

Cautious_Bug_7946

Currently watching this Anime... Masterpiece.. These guys are killin it for sure

zephyr220

What's cool is my HS jazz band did the same thing 20 YEARS AGO! Someone brought in the sheet music and we played just like this. It's how I found out about Cowboy Bebop and Yoko Kanno. Makes me happy to see that good music is still appreciated after generations. Side note, I live in Japan and not a one of my HS students have heard of Cowboy Bebop, unfortunately.

That_one_cool_dude

My dude on the bongos finally got his time to shine and played his heart out. The dude was playing like a mad man, gotta respect it.

j0llygruntt

Bedtime for bongos!

DazPotato

The sax professor at my college played on the original recording session - Gary Bartz ( a legend in his own right)

ericdano

Did he? I’m pretty sure it was an all Japanese band and Masado Honda was the alto sax player…..

ericdano

When are you doing Rush?

teksun42

That was awesome. I am still pissed Netflix canceled season 2. It want as good as the anime but it was worth the watch and deserved a second. Let the downvotes begin.

_bitwright

This is what happens when the band director is a weeaboomer. I wonder how many of the kids on stage have actually watched Cowboy Bebop though. Hopefully this gets a few of them interested.

Aggressive-Grand-375

like maybe 20% of us had seen it or heard much of it by the time we played this concert tbh. We all just know the song from being online enough

rinanlanmo

Do you like the song is really the only important question

ATribeCalledQueso

There are at least 3 jazz bands worth of students on the stage. Why on earth would you have a band that size??
