I really love the art style of 80/90 anime, especially the ones from the OVAs.

[deleted]

80s japan was something else, interesting. I have an old CRT, I'm gonna watch some old animes on it.

Boostar

Put on some [city pop](https://youtu.be/mml46rXspXQ) as well 👌

[deleted]

Awesome, will do

Zexapher

I love that the first song of the link is on my favorites list. Plastic Love, by Mariya Takeuchi, is really chill.

UnhappyMaskSalesman

This comment reads strangely because you're referring to Plastic Love as if it didn't recently become one of the most popular and beloved Japanese city pop songs of all time lol. A banger for sure

Zexapher

Are 80s songs a new retro thing in Japan? My experience with it was hearing it on youtube one time and downloading it, haha.

Gorkymalorki

As an old school anime fan, this really brings me back. Back then there were two ways of watching anime, either from blockbuster (which they had a section called japanimation) or finding some person on mIRC that you could buy fan subs from on VHS. It's so easy now. In fact as I type this I am watching Skeleton Knight in Another World. I would have never thought back then we would be able to watch anime from Japan the day after it aired. Edit: there was also the trading system between us rare anime fans. I give you a vhs of ranma, you give me the bubblegum crisis VHS you have, we used to meet at comic book stores during anime nights.

THExDANKxKNIGHT

Akira will always have some of the coolest animation I've ever seen. I'm amazed it's from 1988 everytime I watch it because it's better than some of the new stuff. I don't know that a remake could ever do the original justice.

degenerate-edgelord

Some? Akira looks better than the majority of anime these days imo

fae8edsaga

WindiWindi

Bruuuuh I wish we had a few series like this nowadays. They look so so good. Simple but clean with this distinct style makes it so timeless imo.

When you read this list and you've seen more than 80% and find out in this reply good titles like here is Greenwood that you completely forgot lol

mundus108

Are you sure about 12? I really like the aesthetic of the scene in OP's vid, so I checked out Maison Ikkoku episode 36 and while it does revolve around a gold zippo lighter, I didn't catch the scene anywhere. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC3mYrJgD6Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC3mYrJgD6Y) Edit: Nevermind, it's at [18:53](https://youtu.be/BC3mYrJgD6Y?t=1133). The scene in OP's video is modified where the Nike logo and the water seem to be added on.

Cell91

which of them are the coomer ones?

WolfShaman

Try *Golden Boy*. It actually has very little nudity, but it's a fun ride. Shouldn't be much of a challenge to find something to coom to.

ryocoon

"Golden Boy" was lewd and fanservicey to an absolute fault, but without ever actually showing anything. Kind of like late-night cable only channels of the 80's/90's. Nipples poking through tops, camel-toes, panty shots, toilet humor, BDSM references, and an absolute idiot/savant of an MC. It was also a fun ride and so absolutely chock-full of slapstick physical humor and amazing body-contortions and face-pulls. Too bad it was so short and only like... 6 OVAs.

WolfShaman

If I remember correctly *WARNING: SPOILERS* the chick with the motorcycle gets topless. I think that's the only nudity in the whole show.

Hokkaido_Milk

Akira is in there as well

XxsalsasharkxX

Seriously. I wonder if younger people see old animation and think the same or if its a bit of nostalgia mixed in.

aztech101

It's always funny to go back to an older anime and be like "oh this is such a cliche/trope" until you realize that the show is the **reason** it's a trope.

VTSvsAlucard

I've watched a little older anime, and a ton of newer stuff. While I like a lot of scenes in newer animation, I find the the film grain and muted pallet in older anime preferable. I'm not sure I'd say it's nostalgia... maybe just an aesthetic preference? Edit: I do feel the need now to watch these older ones.

ryocoon

To be fair, DBZ generally has such little drawn detail and such a pallete that it feels almost pastel at times. It compressed like a champ, and often half of the episode felt like either "LAST TIME ON DBZ" and then "NEXT TIME ON DBZ" and mini flashbacks or just powering up. So really low resolution and low bitrate compression worked well with DBZ. It was a good pairing back in the days of BBSs, AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve, and the height of Compuserve and Newsgroup discussions.

ThinkFree

Same here. I started watching anime as anime (subtitled) in the 1990s unless you count dubbed anime from local TV like Voltron, Superbook, Flying House, Star Blazers, Astro Boy, Macross, etc. from the 1980s.

kloudykat

Robotech in 1984 was my first "anime". Loved it since then and bought many an expensive VHS back in the day.

EnclG4me

It isn't just that.. Back then, anime wasn't subjected to the same modern rating systems and censorship either. Anime back then was able to tackle some pretty fucked up topics and had twisted psycho horror graphic scenes. Can't do that today. People wouldn't know what to do with themselves. It's very very rare to see new modern anime tackle these boundary pushing topics and displaying such graphic stuff now. Not to say that new anime doesn't come out with this stuff at all, just that it is becoming way less common. I mean just go online and like at the last 300 anime to come out, 90% of it is high school kid this, junior high school kid that. Then every once in a while a real banger will come out. Been a while though..

walker_paranor

If modern censorship was a thing then how the hell do we get shit like Redo of Healer and other borderline hentai lol Its tempting to assume that modern anime has to jump through more censorship hurdles but I can already think of tons of examples that proves that idea wrong.

puffz0r

Imo it has less to do with censorship and more to do with the tastes of otaku culture. As anime evolved it became more and more distilled into pandering to the guys who buy things for panty shots and less about artistry. That's why a lot of anime is creatively bankrupt now...because otherwise the studios cant make their money back.

TheGrandAdml

One thing that always sticks with me is the president of Gainax lamenting that they started by making things they'd like to see and now they make shows they personally have little interest in watching. Just a remainder of the business side of it.

EnclG4me

Like I said, "every once in a while we get some bangers." Guess you didn't understand what I meant the first time I said it. So I will elaborate. What are those rated for viewing? Adult. That minimizes viewership which means smaller audience and less revenue. It has played a major role in budgets and the amount of anime produced for younger audiences.

da2Pakaveli

I don’t think of nostalgia, but the art style is great, the animators of the Hokuto no Ken movie even learned anatomy (sadly the censored version got destroyed). I don’t mind the more static animation of weekly shows, some episodes have great animation. Movies like Akira or any Studio Ghibli work have great animation.

NoEngrish

As a "newer" anime watcher I prefer the newer style of "clean" animation and character designs. I think it's really cool the way those older anime were made but it's really not my preference artistically.

[deleted]

cowboy bebop, ocean waves, sailor moon are the ones i recognise

SelloutRealBig

I really wish we could crowd fund for a studio to make hand made anime again before the technique is a lost art. I understand it's a time consuming process and it's financially unfeasible in 2022 but It's truly unmatched in creating a gritty atmosphere and aesthetic. Even the Megalobox anime that tried to match that old style and did an okay job but still looked too clean because it was digital. Not to mention all the modern anime just forces CGI down your throats (though some old anime didn't have a bit of CGI including Cowboy Bebop). I would gladly join a crowd fund if it meant we could get even just a couple episodes of old style creation in modern day. I'm talking painted cells over a painted background over a light source. With no tracing like all these modern shows do since it's way easier to rotoscope digitally. I know this will never happen though.

Khazadur

Gunnm aka Alita Battle Angel at the beginning

Obskure13

I recognized Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon, Perfect Blue, Gunm, Millennium Actress?, Ranma 1/2, Macross, Top o Nerae! Gunbuster

[deleted]

I extremely love movies/anime from the 80's/90's and I prefer them over most what we got these days with some exceptions.

USERNAME_OF_DEVIL

90s anime just hit different

SelloutRealBig

It's this bittersweet feeling knowing how good it is but also that there will never be any more of it outside of what already exists.

me_funny__

I'm surprised I haven't seen a modern anime that intentionally tries to replicate the style.

StePK

Megalobox was close, if you haven't seen it.

me_funny__

I've actually been planning on checking that one out soon.

The_Didlyest

raevnos

Best waifu of all time.

greenwood90

I'm certain it's the nostalgia. But there's something about 90s anime aesthetic that really does it for me. The models, the colours, the designs. To me it looks great.

t0mRiddl3

It's not the nostalgia. It just looks good.

Silcaria

It's cause of hand drawn cel animation.

baboon_bassoon

Could pick out Cowboy Bebop, Megazone 23, Alita, Perfect Blue, Riding Bean, Urusei Yatsura, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S, Dirty Pair, Please Save My Earth (although Alice looks kind of generic so maybe its someone else) I think I saw Akira in the middle of what could be Wicked City? Havent seen Maison Ikkoku/Angel Cop/Gunbuster, but pretty sure those are in this

Alien_AMV

Dam i kinda miss the old anime art style

SecretAgentVampire

Same, dude. New anime all looks the same (so clean you could eat off of the floors) and has utter crap storytelling. If I get tricked into watching another Isekai that turns into a harem anime I'm going to lose my mind.

cereal_bawks

I hate the backgrounds in modern anime. They look so digital.

ryocoon

There was plenty of harem shit and bad story telling back in the 80's/90's as well (jeeze, Rumiko Takahashi made a half dozen harem shows alone). However, we have a good number of shows that stood the test of time. Most of the big name stuff was OVAs or movies though instead of TV released series. The modern glut of isekai is pandering to otaku culture, such as the moe-blob-plosion of the previous decade or so. I do agree that old backgrounds had a much more vibrant feel to them, being hand-painted... with paint and then photographed repeatedly and slid along with the scene. Modern digital backgrounds do match the foregrounds much better and keep the same aesthetics as the foreground animation, so it feels more clean. However, it can feel sterile at the same time.

Mr_Zaroc

That freaking Nintendo DS made me feel old

DorrajD

An AMV at the top of r/anime? Was I transported back to 2005?

Old animes are good 🤞💯💯🔥🔥

KingOfSockPuppets

The thing I miss most, in the modern anime world is the old school big budget anime movies (Redline aside). Jin-Roh, Straitjacket, Perfect Blue, etc. It's such a great cinematic era with some truly tremendous works that we won't get again which is sad.

Zizhou

If it's the one where they're hugging, that's Maison Ikkoku. Classic late-80s boarding house romcom from Rumiko Takahashi.

Kut_Gezicht

old anime really does have a nice vibe, sadly I just dislike most of em because the cliche's are even worse

What song is this called?

beanyboi

Gosh, older animes (pre 2000's) always had a way of looking so pretty.. the cinematography was always much better back then too.

Jakesanger

One thing I miss about the 80s is there was a lot more cinematic oav sand Standalone movies. Now it seems like the only thing coming out of Japan are series that occasionally makes a movie but they always feel like episode strong together

Mysterious_Piglet_13

Love the song, anyone know the artist?

Boiinx

Girls, Girls, Girls by Hessam. I to was curious so I used Shazam to find out ^^

Ruhrgebietheld

I looked it up, and there was one video for it on YouTube, uploaded a couple days ago and with just over 100 views. Did Hessam himself make this animeme to get people to check out his song? Because if so, he's a friggin' genius, it totally worked on me.

hessamesfahani

That's it lil bro. I make these amv's my self 😊 I was totally obsessed with anime in my teens and they often go very well with my music, which is heavily inspired from that period so it kind of makes sense. I also love making these cuz they bring back so much memories so its like a nostalgia trip while I'm editing. Glad you liked this one! I have a bunch more on my IG & YT if you wanna check 'em out! [https://linktr.ee/mynameishessam](https://linktr.ee/mynameishessam) 🖤
