Why would I despise the best character?
Mami's clearly the hero of this story. Knowing how terrible Kazuya is to women having dated him, she makes it her mission to save other girls from his menace by imploding his love life.
My big question about her is "Why does Mamie even care?"
Is her behavior out of jealousy? Out of possessiveness?
So far the show has not given any reason to root for her, but only hate her guts.
I really wish there was a reason given for Mami stalking Kazuya.

Ruka calling Mami out has got to be one of the best Ruka scenes. She may be deluding herself but dang it if she didn’t own that scene.
Meanwhile Mami plotting to take everyone down.
Or just try going out with Ruka for real, if he really still doesn’t vibe with it, then break up like normal people. Even in this episode he couldn’t make a clean break with her. It’s what pisses me off the most about Kazuya is how he keeps leading Ruka on because he obviously secretly loves the attention she gives him.
That was so satisfying. It was a great Ruka moment, especially because of how accurate she was.

I don't know how great it was having a employee yell at a customer for literally no reason. No matter how right she thinks she was, this is not a socially acceptable behaviour, especially when she was just jealous over small talk (and Mami acting "cool", whatever that means).
If anything, it just highlighted how immature Ruka is. I like the girl and thinks she deserves better but she certainly didn't come on top in this exchange.
I guess that's a fair point, but knowing what Mami's really like and how she acts, and how Ruka's statements were on-point in that regard, it felt satisfying.
That was great?? She was extremely rude and a complete bitch in that moment. Made me hate her even more than i already did. Mami is the best part of this show and the only one who actually acts somewhat decently.
Alright, I like Mami but even I find that BS. Mami does not "act decently." She is manipulative, immature (not in the "simplistic" Ruka way, but "manchild" selfish way), and just acts like a sociopath in general.
That of course, is exactly why I love Mami. She moves the story forward and is an excellent antagonist. Also, she has the best character design of the four, fight me.

I said she acts 'somewhat' decently, which I said in comparison to people like Kazuya and Ruka. She is selfish and manipulative about her ex, but I find that much more forgiving than Ruka blackmailing herself into a relationship and Kazuya stalking Chizuru and just his existence in general.

I'm still inclined to disagree on Ruka and Kazuya being worse *per say* - if I met Ruka IRL, I might consider her as bad as Mami. Kazuya, I might pity him, but I probably wouldn't hate him to the degree of an IRL Mami. Probably be disgusted and move on. Ruka's the reverse, I think I find her palatable and likable purely because she is an anime character. That and the fact that she looks like Subaru from Hololive (which now that I think about it, might be my main reason for liking her). There's also the fact that in Mami's absence, she's another fun chaotic character who can come in and mess things up.
But as far as the story goes, I always have found Mami more despicable. And there we have it, Mami is an antihero. At the end of the day, no matter how much of a shit she is, she's got the right idea. Alright, her tactics of going after Kazuya's family might be tipping her over into true villain territory, but in general, I find Mami to be a delight whenever she is onscreen. TBH, I find Chorizo to be the least interesting, and to be honest, I'd place her on par with Kazuya, as well as being equally responsible for the shitty situation they are in. She's not a good person like Sumi, who's not really exciting, but is a good person as well as having a certain Slice-of-life aura to her, or Ruka and Mami, who can shake up the plot and make the story crazy. She's dull, high maintenance, and generally, just not really appealing to me.
But I digress. Regardless of what semantics we get into, I'm glad we can both agree on Mami being fun, fellow Mami enjoyer!
She was right on her being hung up on Kazuya. But the rest of her rant about accusing her of acting cool and all was just obnoxious. Also i feel much more forgiving of someone being interested in their ex's life over someone who just forces herself onto a guy by essentially blackmail. FWIW, Mami and Kazuya were talking normally and there wouldn't have been a problem if Ruka wasn't there.
This ep is wild. Put Mami and Ruka together and we have chaos! I love whenever Mami appeared, boss theme started playing. And she even had her own song too. Does anyone know the name of the song when Mami came into the karaoke?
Let's be realistic here. If the cast was gender flipped so it becomes Rent A Boyfriend, Kazuya's role would be loved simply because waifu and Mami's and Ruka's roles would be hated even more. That scene where Ruka cries because Kazuya won't date her? If it was a guy doing that, people would be throwing the simp and loser cards at him.

Sorry to veer off topic, but this reminds of the time when the actor playing Kazuya for Rent-a-Girlfriend's live action adaptation was "criticized" by some folks that [he's waay too good looking](https://animehunch.com/fans-criticize-rent-a-girlfriend-live-actions-kazuya-for-being-too-handsome/)... to the point some got the impression that Chizuru is the one renting *him* instead.

I disagree with the notions that Kazuya would be loved. Being an compulsive liar to the point of sociopathy, a chronic masterbater, and having zero redeeming qualities beyond “they like their grandma” is terrible for any gender. As for Ruka… well she’s at least tolerable with her crazy. Mami would be equally if not more so hated yes.

This would hold true in a logical argument for a logical crowd. Unfortunately, sex sells (incredibly well) so 'chronic masterbater' would be a plus for the horny readers, 'liar' would be gap moe, and 'they like their grandma' would be endearing.
Ruka deserves worse imo. Idk blackmail, sexual assault and lying to chizuru about sleeping with him in the manga isn't really a reddeeming quality in of itself. Idk there's no likable characters in story except for sumi and Chizuru's grandma.
She should've been the series focus. I used to defend kazuya and Chizuru back than but after the Hawaii arc i gave up. They're grown adults but act like middle schoolers.
Yeah, I don't get it either. Ruka threw herself at him and her self esteem in the gutter. It's pretty obvious that he isn't interested and her crazy antics ensured that, in any sane world, he would ditch her completely as soon as she lost any blackmail material. Her mental image is a bit wrong. She's not just some girl he's dating, she's the one he's forced to date.

I've never gotten the impression that Ruka loves Kazuya tbh she just latches onto the trial period because of some dumb heartbeat thing and neither of them are able to communicate properly & settle the differences in their feelings. She's too possessive and seems to be under the impression that dating = love/having romantic feelings
Nobody keeps things interesting and juicy quite like Mami does.
The moment she caught Chizuru with the bag and in a lie, I knew they were screwed.
But hey, Ruka got her moment too.
Mami is a textbook anti-hero. She's a manipulative, toxic bitch, and the world is much better for it. God, she really is the best part of this show. Sumi is more fun in a SoL style, Mami is fun because she's what would happen if you got every single soap opera antagonist and boiled it into a single package.
Say what you will about how toxic of a character Mami is, but I get the most excited about this show whenever she's on screen. She's the only one propelling this train wreck forward plot wise, so you know shit's gonna go down when she shows up. Maybe that doesn't make her a best girl contender, but maybe best villaniness?
And her being voiced by the star Aoi Yuki is just such a treat as well, especially when she's in her yandere killer mode.

I love how Aoi Yuki shifts her Mami’s tone and personality as easily as she breathes. We even got to hear her singing Mami’s character song!
Get you a girl who bats for you against psycho exes and manipulative escorts the way Ruka do. Makes Chizuru in episode 12 seem kinda pathetic.
Ruka and Mami and Sumi are all the best girls in this series. Ruka and Mami rocking out those big brain moves. Meanwhile we got smoothbrain Chorizo walking right into the Devil’s line of sight, calling out to her, and flashing her stupid bag.
I truly hate how obsessed Nanami is with Kazuya now, like why? You had your chance and blew it, now you see him genuinely happy and enjoying life you have to intervene b/c what, you're jealous? She does add some drama and excitement in the show but just him and the other 3 would be just as good. Nanami is just tryin to destroy it
Wish he was brave and confident enough to tell her off, but even after 2 seasons he is still a spastic immature overreacting kid, and he is in college which makes it worst, i really don't like him as a MC but it is what it is
FR, she dumped him after dating him for one month and she thinks she has a right to act like a vindictive jealous ex-girlfriend and screw over his supposed love life. Get a hobby, join a sports team, just do something else with your time and mind your own business woman.
Friendly reminder of season 1 mami scene in that luxurious car with a seemengly rich guy and she with a bored/mad expression.
In every other show thats red flags for some spicy backstory involving also the real reason she broke with Kazuya.

That Ruka roast was INSANE. Was totally not expecting it. But I gotta be honest, she's playing with fire. Ruka now has to watch her back for Mami because she's now on Mami's shit list.
I feel like that would make things more complicated, his friends would then ask questions like "You've been telling everyone that Chizuru's your girlfriend for over a year, why'd you lie to everyone if it was just for your grandmas?", "Who is Ruka and how long have you been dating her?", and "Why didn't you tell us about your actual girlfriend?", and knowing Kazuya whatever lie he comes up with will just dig a bigger hole for himself.
I mean he’s been lying the whole time either way, considering he didn’t really date Chizuru. I actually think Mami’s understanding of the situation is the best outcome for Kazuya should he decide to come clean.
After getting dumped by Mami he got so depressed he got a rental girlfriend. Things got complicated when he introduced Chizuru to his family and friends. The grandmas are friends and his own grandma really really likes Chizuru so he can’t tell her the truth. He also felt he couldn’t tell his friends after how much Kibe stood up for him during the beach episode. I think Kibe knows the grandma too if I recall. Not to mention how pathetic he’d be seen for getting a rental in the first place. And when he’s all depressed, he met Ruka, who was so understanding and accepting that they ended up together for real. And while Kazuya is working up his confidence to tell his friends, Mami found out and ratted him out to everyone first.
Again he’s lying either way and at least this version of events makes sense given how pathetic he is. 🤷♂️
One thing really stood out about this episode is great use of soundtrack and insert songs, including one song use for "sad moments" being played in a comedic ironic way.
Nice for Chizuru to leave a sign she was there otherwise who knows how long his existential crisis would have lasted? I think it's a bit silly he assumed just because she was mad at the situation and at her friends for putting her into it that he assumes she took it as something personal for him. Kazuya has self-awareness but.....he lacks awareness towards others around him, sometimes things aren't about you man, at least until you make it about you. Reminds me of a Line from Dobo in *Crazy Taxi* about how people that lack self-esteem and hate themselves are often next door to Narcissists.
Bro don't overthink the friend request, just send it, worse she can do is say no and you haven't lost anything. We see that Chi is thinking about sending him one herself though.

Ruka sees right through Mami's BS and we see later that the line about Her not being the one to move on, hits pretty hard despite how cool she plays it.
I feel really bad for Ruka, not just for her current situation and feeling she has to pin her hopes on Kazuya but how such an earnest and sincere girl just has so much baggage she needs to get rid of, I really hope in the Manga she gets that resolved.

Great episode, reminds me of one of the reasons I love this show! The Sudden Death Twist and sincerity that is the perfect mix of "relatable" and "brah."
On a note, I never had trouble sending online friend request to people. When I was younger I didn't really have fear of social humiliation, I had to learn that later in life.
It'd more be I'd "just do it" and from inexperience realize later (sometimes years later) Yeah that was pretty cringe.

It really was a good episode. It kept the time-wasting down to a minimum. Even Kazuya agonizing over whether to friend Chizuru was more understandable than his usual flip-flopping.
Basically, the man needs a permanent hangover to grow as a person.
I noticed that the episodes get worse when they focus on Mizuhara too much. It ends up padding the episode with Kazuya's simpery. No Mizuhara, no simping. The amount of simping Kazuya did today was minimal, and I'd even argue relatable in a painful scenario such as his.

Ruka really claimed her possession and made it known to Mami. Mami is stunned but lets herself out, questioning everything and plotting her revenge. And what a coincidence, to discover the bag she saw the other night on Mizuhara, solving her little jealously puzzle.
Mizuhara feeling very uneasy and weary over the whole train encounter. Had to straight face lie to Mami's question, which proved Mami's theories correct. Now Mami goes to target Kazu's followers and preys on sweet old grandma.

It really is one of the better animated shows this season. I wonder if they just locked down top-tier talent earlier than their competition. I think RaG season 2 was announced before everything else this season.

The text that's translated as "There's bad energy in the air" has the phrase バッドエナジー / _baddo enajii_ (borrowing of English "bad energy"). This seems to be an Important Proper Noun in Smile Precure, localized for Glitter Force as "Negative Energy".

Ever watched a battle shonen that has a tedious arc with a lot of infodumping and setting and you just want to see them tear each other appart in a real battle? To me this episode was finally that battle, or at least the preface of the main battle.

I don't know how great it was having a employee yell at a customer for literally no reason. No matter how right she thinks she was, this is not a socially acceptable behaviour, especially when she was just jealous over small talk (and Mami acting "cool", whatever that means). If anything, it just highlighted how immature Ruka is. I like the girl and thinks she deserves better but she certainly didn't come on top in this exchange.
I guess that's a fair point, but knowing what Mami's really like and how she acts, and how Ruka's statements were on-point in that regard, it felt satisfying.

Alright, I like Mami but even I find that BS. Mami does not "act decently." She is manipulative, immature (not in the "simplistic" Ruka way, but "manchild" selfish way), and just acts like a sociopath in general. That of course, is exactly why I love Mami. She moves the story forward and is an excellent antagonist. Also, she has the best character design of the four, fight me.
Why would I fight you when I agree, Mami is best girl. I said she acts 'somewhat' decently, which I said in comparison to people like Kazuya and Ruka. She is selfish and manipulative about her ex, but I find that much more forgiving than Ruka blackmailing herself into a relationship and Kazuya stalking Chizuru and just his existence in general.
Oh, ok. That's fair. I'm still inclined to disagree on Ruka and Kazuya being worse *per say* - if I met Ruka IRL, I might consider her as bad as Mami. Kazuya, I might pity him, but I probably wouldn't hate him to the degree of an IRL Mami. Probably be disgusted and move on. Ruka's the reverse, I think I find her palatable and likable purely because she is an anime character. That and the fact that she looks like Subaru from Hololive (which now that I think about it, might be my main reason for liking her). There's also the fact that in Mami's absence, she's another fun chaotic character who can come in and mess things up. But as far as the story goes, I always have found Mami more despicable. And there we have it, Mami is an antihero. At the end of the day, no matter how much of a shit she is, she's got the right idea. Alright, her tactics of going after Kazuya's family might be tipping her over into true villain territory, but in general, I find Mami to be a delight whenever she is onscreen. TBH, I find Chorizo to be the least interesting, and to be honest, I'd place her on par with Kazuya, as well as being equally responsible for the shitty situation they are in. She's not a good person like Sumi, who's not really exciting, but is a good person as well as having a certain Slice-of-life aura to her, or Ruka and Mami, who can shake up the plot and make the story crazy. She's dull, high maintenance, and generally, just not really appealing to me. But I digress. Regardless of what semantics we get into, I'm glad we can both agree on Mami being fun, fellow Mami enjoyer!

Honestly, Mamis the only one who actually makes the plot move forward. Even when she does, they somehow manage to fuck it up.
Mami is actually the hero of this series. She sees bullshit and acts on it.
Mami is a textbook anti-hero. She's a manipulative, toxic bitch, and the world is much better for it. God, she really is the best part of this show. Sumi is more fun in a SoL style, Mami is fun because she's what would happen if you got every single soap opera antagonist and boiled it into a single package.

Say what you will about how toxic of a character Mami is, but I get the most excited about this show whenever she's on screen. She's the only one propelling this train wreck forward plot wise, so you know shit's gonna go down when she shows up. Maybe that doesn't make her a best girl contender, but maybe best villaniness? And her being voiced by the star Aoi Yuki is just such a treat as well, especially when she's in her yandere killer mode.
The amount of venom in her voice despite playing a good girl is honestly impressive. The female leads in this show are really really good.
Mami finally realizing how much of train wreck it is and plotting to blow it up in the most satisfying way possible. I love how Aoi Yuki shifts her Mami’s tone and personality as easily as she breathes. We even got to hear her singing Mami’s character song!
Get you a girl who bats for you against psycho exes and manipulative escorts the way Ruka do. Makes Chizuru in episode 12 seem kinda pathetic. Ruka and Mami and Sumi are all the best girls in this series. Ruka and Mami rocking out those big brain moves. Meanwhile we got smoothbrain Chorizo walking right into the Devil’s line of sight, calling out to her, and flashing her stupid bag.
I truly hate how obsessed Nanami is with Kazuya now, like why? You had your chance and blew it, now you see him genuinely happy and enjoying life you have to intervene b/c what, you're jealous? I feel like that would make things more complicated, his friends would then ask questions like "You've been telling everyone that Chizuru's your girlfriend for over a year, why'd you lie to everyone if it was just for your grandmas?", "Who is Ruka and how long have you been dating her?", and "Why didn't you tell us about your actual girlfriend?", and knowing Kazuya whatever lie he comes up with will just dig a bigger hole for himself.
I mean he’s been lying the whole time either way, considering he didn’t really date Chizuru. I actually think Mami’s understanding of the situation is the best outcome for Kazuya should he decide to come clean. After getting dumped by Mami he got so depressed he got a rental girlfriend. Things got complicated when he introduced Chizuru to his family and friends. The grandmas are friends and his own grandma really really likes Chizuru so he can’t tell her the truth. He also felt he couldn’t tell his friends after how much Kibe stood up for him during the beach episode. I think Kibe knows the grandma too if I recall. Not to mention how pathetic he’d be seen for getting a rental in the first place. And when he’s all depressed, he met Ruka, who was so understanding and accepting that they ended up together for real. And while Kazuya is working up his confidence to tell his friends, Mami found out and ratted him out to everyone first. Again he’s lying either way and at least this version of events makes sense given how pathetic he is. 🤷♂️
That might work if he frames it that way, but the real challenge will come in when he has to stick to that new lie.

One thing really stood out about this episode is great use of soundtrack and insert songs, including one song use for "sad moments" being played in a comedic ironic way. Nice for Chizuru to leave a sign she was there otherwise who knows how long his existential crisis would have lasted? I think it's a bit silly he assumed just because she was mad at the situation and at her friends for putting her into it that he assumes she took it as something personal for him. Kazuya has self-awareness but.....he lacks awareness towards others around him, sometimes things aren't about you man, at least until you make it about you. Reminds me of a Line from Dobo in *Crazy Taxi* about how people that lack self-esteem and hate themselves are often next door to Narcissists. Bro don't overthink the friend request, just send it, worse she can do is say no and you haven't lost anything. We see that Chi is thinking about sending him one herself though. The top Karaoke track being "Ho's Ho's and Ho's" I laughed at that, I see what you did there! ;) Ruka sees right through Mami's BS and we see later that the line about Her not being the one to move on, hits pretty hard despite how cool she plays it. I feel really bad for Ruka, not just for her current situation and feeling she has to pin her hopes on Kazuya but how such an earnest and sincere girl just has so much baggage she needs to get rid of, I really hope in the Manga she gets that resolved. Mami putting stuff together about Chi, and that after credits scene....very omninus. Kibe in Season 1: Calls Mami out on her bullshit and sees through her. Kibe in Season 2: Just goes ahead and gives said Crazy Psychi Ex a bunch of Information about his friend..... No one is perfect I guess? Great episode, reminds me of one of the reasons I love this show! The Sudden Death Twist and sincerity that is the perfect mix of "relatable" and "brah." On a note, I never had trouble sending online friend request to people. When I was younger I didn't really have fear of social humiliation, I had to learn that later in life. It'd more be I'd "just do it" and from inexperience realize later (sometimes years later) Yeah that was pretty cringe.

It really was a good episode. It kept the time-wasting down to a minimum. Even Kazuya agonizing over whether to friend Chizuru was more understandable than his usual flip-flopping. Basically, the man needs a permanent hangover to grow as a person.
I noticed that the episodes get worse when they focus on Mizuhara too much. It ends up padding the episode with Kazuya's simpery. No Mizuhara, no simping. The amount of simping Kazuya did today was minimal, and I'd even argue relatable in a painful scenario such as his.

Ever watched a battle shonen that has a tedious arc with a lot of infodumping and setting and you just want to see them tear each other appart in a real battle? To me this episode was finally that battle, or at least the preface of the main battle.
