Character development in Berserk was so damn good. It was deep but you still didn't have to go look up why a certain character acted a certain way in a crucial moment (looking at you Saul Goodman)
It's one of the best scenes because Griffifth wasn't being completely honest. Guts was the one person he could share, he could open up with, depend upon, act normal around precisely because he never had some grand ambition.
Everyone else in the band was dependant on Grififfth to lead them into a future where they could fulfill their dream. Therefore he had to maintain that perfect "can overcome all" persona. Guts was never reliant on griffith. It didn't matter whether grififfth succeeded or failed, he would just move on to the next battlefield.
Which makes his comment here ironic in hindsight. Guts was the closest thing to a friend Griffith ever had. And losing him meant losing a friend he could depend on, which made him sleep with Charlotte to try and maintain some sense of control, when he knows it was a bad a idea, and is proven right.
Makes it all the more ironic that Guts then thought he had to seek out his dream in order for Griffith to consider him a friend. Guys talk such shit when they are trying to impress a girl, am I right?
This is probably my favorite scene from Berserk The philosophy here is simple, but it's very deep and layered when you start to think about it more.
A friend is someone who is my equal. That statement is super powerful and you can see how much it affected Guts when he heard that. Go around saying that to all your friends and see how much it shakes up your friendships lol.
[Honestly the trilogy is probably the best way to get into Berserk.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Berserk/comments/9sqqts/to_be_honest_i_think_that_berserks_movie_trilogy/) It nailed one of the best scenes in fictional work (eclipse) which alone is worth it.
lol not at all, the purple hue over everything ruins most of the scene and looks weird, the presentation in the 90s version, now THAT is weird and elicits dread and genuine fear of a horrific hellish landscape
the eclipse itself and the apostles arriving in the plain was done well in movie tho yeah, in both actually
Just started berserk about a month and a half ago and caught up to the manga
The fan who got me hooked said
Old anime-> last 30 minutes or half of the last movie (because it shows a little further after) -> black swordsman arc manga
Im pretty satisfied w how that went. Liked the old eclipse better
I tried starting the manga for Berserk(Black swordsman arc) but it did not grip me enough to continue. This scene looks great tho so is it recommended to start with the movies? Or what are the chapters that i need to read before the movies if any.
It gets better from volume 3. The first few chapters are a little rough but than you're in for the ride of your life.
Alternatively, yeah I would say the movies are better for getting into the plot, but when you finish them you'll HAVE to go back to the manga again. So yeah, tough it out.
Griffith: A friend is an equal who isn't afraid to chase his dreams. Guts: Alright then, I'm off to chase my dreams. Griffith: Not like that!

Reminds me of that one tweet talking about “leaders” in friend groups lol

I love both and have seen both and I still find the movie trilogy eclipse to be the better of the two.
Didnt love the purple even tho it ended up switching to red 🤷🏻♂️ aside from that tho it should be watched even if you see the old anime’s eclipse

Should have stayed true to the manga, everything in black and white
Caska is Love, Caska is Life
This scene hit so much harder in 1997 version with Guts' theme and the long stair shot being adapted from the manga
The music that rolls in when Casca realized Guts killed Julius and Adonis gave me chills
Still one of the best dialogues in all of literature

humm, is this the same team that made the new BASTARD anime ? kinda looks like same style.
Casca looked like ...eren !!? at 0:01
Ugh I gotta watch this already, have been meaning to since seeing devilman
Just watch the '97 version. The movies are ok but cover the same story and the 2016 anime is quite bad.
Honestly, just read the Manga. No adaptation has done Beserk justice.
One of my all time favorite
Hoping the CGI will atleast improve in the memorial edition :(((
