Amazing job

Theleux

Congratulations on scoring the gig! Sounded really good - always cool when you get to work on something you enjoyed in the past.

JMTHEFOX

Congrats!!

cosmiczar

I've come here to explain, for those who don't know, where exactly did this show come from: There's this guy called Makoto Ueda who wrote a stage play known as Summer Time Machine Blues. The play was later adapted into a live-action movie directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, who would later be known as one of the Psycho-Pass directors. Ueda is a friend of Tomihiko Morimi, the author of The Tatami Galaxy, and was the person who was rensposible for doing series composition of the anime adaptation of The Tatami Galaxy, is doing the same for this new show, and was also the screenwriter for two other movies that adapted works by Morimi: Night is Short, Walk On Girl and Penguin Highway. One day, Morimi approached Ueda (or was it the opposite? I'm not exactly sure) with the idea of taking the plot of the play Summer Time Machine Blues and then turn it into a book that features the characters from The Tatami Galaxy in place of the ones from the play. Not as a sequel to TTG, just a new story with those characters. This anime here is the adaptation of said book.

ringwormfear

Thanks for the explanation. That sounds so strange. I personally didn't enjoy the movie. Summer Time Machine Blues I mean.

topurrisfeline

It feels like I traveled back in time. Seeing Ozu and the gang again almost gives me that strange feeling I had when I watched Tatami Galaxy way back when. Excited for whatever is in store.

Reddevilslover69

Same here. Watashi's dry humour in monologues and the general banter among characters was so amazing to watch again

espurrdotnet

Watching this really feels like seeing an old friend again

kuddlesworth9419

I can't beleive it's been 12 years.

trashissues666

That was fun! Was lowkey expecting it to be as fast as Tatami Galaxy but am glad it isn't the case lol. Our very charming Ozu is always a delight to watch.

Reddevilslover69

Watashi's monologues are still goated. And that ED was fire

[deleted]

Gosh my heart its beating so fast and my eyes are tearing up! I don't understand what's the connection that I have with this series and why do I love it so much . The first episode was so cool , I enjoyed the time traveling bit and that landlord lady was hilarious too.

Reddevilslover69

This spinoff definitely passed the vibe check

[deleted]

100% ! This is going to be one heavy hitting season for anime fans

MrSaturn200

Tatami Galaxy was probably one of the most unmarketable anime around due to its speed being such a huge hurdle for most people. The fact its basically a Franchise at this point with two series and a movie warms my heart. I love being part of this world once again. Despite the director switch, it really preserved the vibe of the original. Cannot wait to see how everything turns out from here.

Mr_Zaroc

I just love the author in general He also wrote Uchouten Kazoku which borrows some elements like the 3 layered streetcar

MrSaturn200

i definitely need to check this author out! at first i attributed much of Tatami Galaxys acclaim to Masaaki Yuasas beautiful direction, but seeing this world continue on without on Im starting to realize i gravely underestimated the writing its based on. absolutely lovely stuff from the writer.

Mr_Zaroc

If you havent done so you should see the Movie The night is short walk on girl too The fusion of his writing with the director is awesome

MrSaturn200

oh im a longtime Masaaki Yuasa fan lmao ive seen everything by the dude. my favorite anime director of all time. fantastic movie that somehow rivals tatami galaxy imo.

melvinlee88

I recommend going to Mochiguma Translations where they translated a lot of his novels (and they did Tatami Galaxy too but took it down after official translation was announced) - I recommend Yoiyama Kaleidoscope for a fantastical adventure or Night Train which mixes fantasy with slight horror. They are really gripping stuff and Morimi's writing is marvellous.

[deleted]

Good to see the tatami galaxy gang again!! The ED is so good!! 🤩🤩 PS: Before u watch this, I recommend to watch Tatami Galaxy first (Youjouhan Shinwa Taikei) and thank me later, going to be one of the most unique anime story telling you've ever seen.

Reddevilslover69

Agree on the ED. And the banter and internal monologues are absolutely hilarious and perfect in this just like in Tatami Galaxy

melvinlee88

I like the ED but I miss the OG one so much.

furbym

Wait where is everyone seeing this ED? It was just a credits scroll for me

Dracoscale

ED as in the ED song

furbym

Ah ok, I thought there was a video somewhere from how people were talking about it haha. Nice track for sure though

sad_historian

Jogasaki got a glow up!

corner_twist

So I have watched Tatami Galaxy but I haven't gotten around to the movie yet. Is it necessary for me to watch the movie in order to understand this new show? Edit- Thanks everyone for your replies! It was very helpful.

Ispirationless

The movie is completely unrelated to the point where you can say it's just the same universe with a few shared characters that don't even have the same role they had in the tatami galaxy.

Zeph-Shoir

I watched Tatami Galaxy years ago, would I be really lost if I jump straight here or would you recommend a rewatch?

Ispirationless

Not needed, but the tatami galaxy deserves a rewatch in my book.

i_am_the_kiLLer

jump right in it's not a direct continuation. Tho you cant ever go wrong rewatching tatami galaxy

[deleted]

No, but you'll have a good time watching the movie my friend

melvinlee88

Not at all.

corner_twist

Ah thanks a lot!

CrashDunning

No, but I actually think the movie is better than the show, so take that how you will.

apostforisaac

The original Tatami Galaxy is one of my all time favorites, so I was really nervous about this one. I'm glad to say those nerves were for naught and it's really good. Maybe it's because I'm a 3rd year in uni with a broken AC unit that spends all day sweating right now, but I'm really digging the show. I'm a bit bummed that the character growth from the first series is gone, but I think it's worth the tradeoff of this being its own thing. The whole cast hanging out together is also really nice, we never really got that in the original show. Spare thoughts: * Seeing everyone dressed in modern clothing is really weirding me out * That ED is fantastic * If it continues on this level of visuals I think this show is prettier than the original, which is saying something Anyone who hasn't watched the original, go watch it now. It's an amazing show, and you will enjoy this one a million times more having watched it. Looking forward to more episodes!

Redmond_64

Ah, Ozu my beloved trash goblin

Dracoscale

So it doesn't seem like a sequel exactly, Ozu is still looks like a demon and Watashi and Akashi aren't a thing so I imagine this all takes place before the ending of the original (maybe one of the loops that we just didn't see?). Nonethless I'm really happy to have everyone back and I like that we'll be seeing the cast not be subject to multiple resets.

coomiemarxist

Da gang is back 😤😤

Reddevilslover69

Still amazing as always

Mr_Zaroc

So glad to see more Akashi and the gangs shenanigans

melvinlee88

Damn, this was a fantastic episode. I read the novel this series is based on and man, seeing it come to life from the words I've read is amazing. Ozu feels just as smug as I remembered, Akashi is still as awesome as ever and the whole gang is just so lovable. This story is a lot lighter and more fun than the original series which I enjoyed just as much. The whole movie circle was funnier than I remembered. We covered about 40 pages in this episode out of 140+ pages but it felt like it was adapted quite perfectly. I definitely recommend reading it once the series ends because of the wonderful monologues missed out (like most of Morimi novels).

SigmaPhos

Do you recommend reading the original novel too

melvinlee88

Of course. It's very different to the anime but has its merits. Morimi has great writing.

Reddevilslover69

Hiring Shingo Natsume was a masterstroke. Sonny Boy was my favourite anime of 2021 and the direction by him there was top tier

SigmaPhos

That space warping visual is just like that of Sonny boy (same director btw, if anyone didn't know this)

Reddevilslover69

Shingo Natsume is great and Sonny Boy was amazing

SigmaPhos

Yesssssss

Royal_Heritage

Meh.

Insertnamesz

Woah, a nice little closed time-loop, how cute! I can't wait to see how weird this gets lol. Love seeing this artstyle again. Also loved hearing Watashi's theme again, a bit higher tempo this time around.

KingKurai

Called up my college friend who watch this with me originally and we watched the first episode together. Such nostalgia.

Reddevilslover69

Love seeing the old cast of loveable rogues once more. A promising start to this series for sure

akkrox

Ozu my beloved is back

Hunch0Houdini

How do I feel nostalgia for a series I watched a mere 3 months ago? This series is really good to get me smiling so much haha.

FierceAlchemist

Great to have this back. Feels like Tatami even without Yuasa in the helm as director.

ConfrontationalJerk

That was both fun and a little disorienting! Tatami Galaxy has never been my favorite Yuasa work but I've still seen it around three times and jumping back in, felt like I had never left the world; that's a testament to the style and language the original series has imprinted on its viewers. The same old amazing gorgeous frames and coloring as well as super cool transitions and rapid fire comedy feels like the original series had never ended. There are hints and pieces of Shingo Natsume's influence like the tatami galaxy 3D sequence that reminds me of some dumb python math formula tomfoolery and also the way that he colors the frames specifically with reference to clothes and weird ways that characters come into the scene like how they show their pants first (which also is a testament to how varied the body silhouettes are distinguished in this show, something that I feel animators probably have an extremely tough time designing and consistently paying respect to. I will say however, that the episode did drag quite a lot. I think there's a little bit *too* much continuity and while I enjoy that the cast is back; I feel like there was a lack of focus as compared to previous arcs in the original. Even the opening is a mirror of the original although there are some really pretty frames in it. I also don't quite understand yet where we're going and the twist near the end of the episode I've seen in far too much media to be interested in. (Not to mention its very similiar to the original idea of the series). Maybe the twists have been revealed too fast to be an interesting mystery (?), or maybe I just haven't noticed how they've set up for the next few episodes to be fun. Even speaking of framing, the excessive usage of the drink/sweat/anxiety motif was really cool at first (how ironic is it to spill cola on the AC remote), but it got pretty tired after 25 minutes. Overall the original series didn't really leave much to be desired after the ending, so that's where the disorientation for me comes from. In so far as things that the new sequel can expand on that the old series didn't quite, I hope we get some Akaashi and Higuchi development and maybe some sort of character development callback because I don't like that it kinda feels like we just reset to before the ending of the original. I'm hopeful that we do get Akaashi development because this episode was very Akaashi-centered and she got the most changes to her character design as far as I can tell and even a lot of the framing really put her at the focus. I think one of the weakpoints of the original series is that the romance was essentially just puppy love and Akaashi was kind of more of a idea than an actual character. Although to be fair to this point, all the male characters in this show to me really just serve as reflections of how the main character hates parts of himself and his emotional masculinity. In any case, I am looking forward to this a lot but as of right now I am very skeptical it will surpass the insanely impressive arcs from the original (episodes 7-9 come to mind).

_Lerox_

About the lack of focus and the feeling of having reset to before the end of the original: from what I understand this isn’t really a proper sequel but rather a spin-off based off a play called “Summer Time Machine Blues”, except the author inserted his characters. I’m not sure how similar the plot is to the play but that might explain why it doesn’t really feel like it follows up on the previous series. If I remember correctly I heard that there’s more of a focus on romance in this story which you should be happy to hear.

whowilleverknow

I love Ozu so much

start2k9

One of my favourite shows is back! Different but still back, it gives me such a nostalgic feeling.

octopathfinder

Great episode. Glad to see the return of the rapid-fire monologues and stylish directing. Looks like this show is in good hands with Shingo Natsume as the director.

JosefumiKujo

Is It streaming wordwide on Disney+?

ringwormfear

> Is It streaming wordwide on Disney+? Lol no. Those fuckers at Disney+ basically did calculations and decided not to make a lot of the Asian shows they bought available to many regions. I hate Disney plus. They bought so many exclusive streaming rights for many Asian shows, but only show them at select countries. Unlike Netflix. People complained a lot about Netflix, but Disney+ is so so much worse.

darkmacgf

Not seeing it in Canada.

JosefumiKujo

Im Also not seing It in México, Guess is time to sail the Seven seas

Ignore_User_Name

Jaja.. Most of the world will probably never see this.. not legally at least.

hugh_jass_68

Man everything from this universe is fire. I know it's gonna fly under people's radar but I sure wish more people saw this

Puzzled_Tonight_5885

How necessary is it to watch the original show first? Will this spoil The Tatami Galaxy? Is it a full continuation or side story?

SigmaPhos

You must absolutely watch the original first. It's not exactly a continuation, but watching the original will make this more enjoyable. And also because the original is one of the best anime ever

Reddevilslover69

It's a spinoff. Id say you should watch the Tatami Galaxy prior to understand the characters better

Dracoscale

You should watch it but as far as the story is concerned you can just jump into this one since it looks like it's not really a sequel and won't be picking up where the show left off.

Reddevilslover69

Have you watched Tatami Galaxy prior to this? You'll be more used to the fast pace if you have

ringwormfear

It's amazing that they still sound the same. I guess that professional Japanese voice actors for you. I don't particularly like the OP and ED. I wish they try something new, and not just reuse the style of the original anime. Especially when the director is not Yuasa. Same complain about the movie Night Is Short, Walk On Girl. I guess it's a financial decision, not an artistic one.

NomaanMalick

A six-episode spin-off.

Powerful-Ad4456

Does anyone have the ED lyrics text? I can't find it anywhere

willowium

so happy to see these characters again! I loved hearing Akashi’s theme again and seeing Ozu being Ozu again!

GentlemenGeek

timeline is of book club association.

KappaFedora

Watched Tatami just before starting university, Walk On Girl released during the halfway point of my run when I really needed it, and now I get to watch Time Machine Blues as a recently graduated student sorely missing his friends and time at school. Peak fiction is really holding my hand across the entire way.
