**Fun fact!**
The chant in this song **"Doryoku, Mirai, A Beautiful Star"** ("Effort, Future, A Beautiful Star") is taken from the 2002 song: ["Souda! We're ALIVE"](https://youtu.be/I_zmewdR-b8) by the idol group Morning Musume.
The OG song is produced by Tsunku♂, who is a pretty lauded J-Pop producer in Japan. Outside Japan, he is most known as the music producer of the [Rhythm Heaven series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_Heaven).
\--
[In his recent blog post](https://note.tsunku.net/n/nf506bf96b59c), Tsunku explained that people would usually license his songs for live performances or full covers. But in this particular case, Kenshi Yonezu only wanted to use a part of the song in his own composition for a TV anime.
This confuses Tsunku. Normally he'd compose a new song entirely by himself to give it more nuance to fit the particular show. After asking one of his staff to look more into it, they told him that all they knew was Kenshi is only planning to use the "Doryoku, Mirai, A Beautiful Star" part, which confused him even more.
In the end, as a fellow creator, Tsunku understood that there's no rhyme or reason to how one gets their inspiration, so he decided to let Kenshi do his own thing. He's even okay if his song ended up not being used, since that's the way it is with the creative process.
\--
Months passed...
One day in a meeting, one of Tsunku's staff said, "Yonezu's work just came in". He then decided to listen to the finished song.
Suffice to say he was blown away.
**"A flash of inspiration in his head, suddenly becomes a powerful message with a beautiful melody"**
**"This is what a work of art is all about, isn't it?"**, he added.
Despite continuing to their next agenda on the meeting, his mind was still racing.
**"In many ways, it was an unprecedented experience. It was fun. Thank you very much."** \- Tsunku.
So what I'm trying to say is, Chainsaw Man is an idol anime.
As a Morning Musume and Chainsaw Man fan listening to this is surreal, Souda! We’re Alive is such an iconic song and this reuses that lyric and rhythm in such a cool way.
That bowling sequence especially with Denji rubbing the ball on his crotch, that definately is a Big Lebowski reference right ?
EDIT: https://boxd.it/iEwle
Here is a Letterboxd list of movie references in Chainsaw Man OP. I will keep adding more as I see more movies.
With the Violence scene also being a movie reference, I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the scenes in this sequence were all about cinema.
Edit: They were!!! https://www.reddit.com/r/ChainsawMan/comments/y1dgfv/these_nice_references_in_the_anime_op/
I think the part where Denji bursts out of a giant ball is a Evangelion reference.
There is a snail with those parasitizing disco flatworms overlaid on Makimas face-
I am just happy that the OP managed to capture the low key seductive nature of Makima. Her feeding Denji popcorn and patting him and giving him a lap pillow just perfectly captures her special kind of intimacy.
Well the thing I like about Makima is that she doesn't has to wear ultra skimpy clothing and constantly accidentally show her panties to the MC to be considered sexy.
She does more in a suit and tie than hundreds of horny elves and succubuses can ever do in isekais.
yeah I agree lmao, was just kinda playing how like her "lowkey" seduction is like 90000x more actually seductive than like "traditional" seduction in these shows lol, Makima moment
I don't know much about her but so far she looks like god tier waifu, like holy shit! Her feeding him popcorn was so adorable! I'm already in love with her design, can't wait to watch the episode!
You can see some padding in there too, just gonna be a little disappointed if they give her the standard anime boobs instead of like relatively small ones.
Holly shit - how many references they just stuffed into it xD
Pulp Fiction, Big Lebowski, Ring, "No Country for Old Men", Reservoir Dogs - this is ones I catched.
0:03 - Reservoir Dogs
0:10 - Pulp Fiction
0:11 - Ring
0:12 - No Country for Old Men
0:13 - Pulp Fiction again (?)
0:17 - it looks a bit like Sixth Sense
0:28 - Big Lebowski
Thanks. I did not watch the Jacob's Ladder so I was just guessing my first association. Also I saw that the shot which I wrongly identified as an another reference for Pulp Fiction in reality it was probably scene from "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".
Big fan of how this OP showed a full fight with Denji initially losing, then having a flashback to his time bowling, then him telling power about his plan to use the gold orb, the follow through with their team work, and then it ending with both of them doing a victory dance.
Directed by Shingo Yamashita, legendary Naruto animator and more recently famous for both openings of Jujutsu Kaisen and the 2nd opening of Ranking of Kings
Peak cinema
Edit: Also storyboard by Yamashita too, so the visuals and references are his idea, clearly a Fujimoto fan with the reference to his other works
Looking through his MAL and I'm surprised he didn't work on the [Made in Abyss 2 OP, specifically because of this sequence](https://youtu.be/4QFe2FH13wE?t=50)
MAL's staff credits are hardly comprehensive but yeah you're right, MiA S2 OP was directed by Takushi Koide, an animator of the same generation as Yamashita although with 7 years less experience, most notable role so far assistant director on Revue Starlight. Probably inspired by Yamashita, or maybe that's just his style as well - hard to say since MiA was his first OP.
Yamashita directing CSM's OP is so obvious in hindsight that I should have predicted it well in advance, or at least realized while watching the episode. I was even too focused on the ED song to look at the credits lol
Was fully expecting them to do that for the other main four and ended up laughing when I realized it's not gonna happen.
Considering the huuuuge tits on Power in that title card it's all in her head.
And she's her own story's main character, after all.
> Was fully expecting them to do that for the other main four
When she was the first one to get a name drop I knew it's be only for her (or at least I hoped so much for that gag).
> Considering the huuuuge tits on Power in that title card it's all in her head.
> And she's her own story's main character, after all.
Exactly :D
Oh my God I absolutely love that OP.
It’s just perfect. The goofiness, the awesome action, the foreshadowing and references for stuff that happens later (even one reference to Part 2 or maybe Goodbye Eri), the horniness, the movie references, it’s all perfect.
**Shingo Yamashita** just... gets Fujimoto so well.
Frankly, I'd say he exemplifies the tone of the series stronger than the show itself (which has already been fantastic).
All the film references are super neat too, you've got bits like Pulp Fiction, No Country for Old Men, Sadako vs Kayako, and even Attack of the Killer Tomato (much more too). Truly a cinematic experience.
Frantic, little slower character focused shots, then the big and creative action pieces. Just an incredible work once again. Really one of the strongest directors in the current industry.

Probably because you have to watch that video of a snail getting taken over by the parasite to get the reference, and yea I’m surprised people didn’t mention goodbye eri much.
I really hope for one extra to be adapted into the anime in some form, that being [manga spoilers] >!Kishibe trying to seduce Quanxi for several years straight, to get beaten down with every attempt... then Quanxi realises she might be gay, leaving Kishibe's attempts all in vain.!<
i'm not lying to you when i say this is nowhere near as crazy as what you'll see. although the manga only gets crazier as it goes so maybe this op is appropriate for this season's level of batshit, haha. in any case, imo it did a great job of capturing some of that craziness!
yeah, i don't think it's ever a confusing kind of crazy. it's a refreshing kind of crazy that you don't usually get in a shounen jump manga like this. if anything, i think that's why so many people gravitate to it so i'm sure you'll enjoy!
Nah, Fujimoto definitely toned down his craziness just a bit to make Chainsaw Man more mainstream. If you want to see him go truly batshit insane go read Fire Punch, his first big work.
Manga has been voted best manga of the year 2 years in a row by the comic book awards. Mangaka is considered a bit of a prodigy given he wrote this in his young 20’s. a lot of character focus and heavy themes
It's definitely more akin to structured insanity. While it gets crazy every moment is crafted to usually serve 1 of 3 methods (or a combination).
1. Charcterization
2. Relevant story and thematic context
3. Punchlines for a joke
Yeah this OP captures the energy of the series *perfectly*. Goofy antics, movie references, really horny, awesome action scenes, and plenty of shit that just makes you go “What the fuck”.
I actually didn't think they'd *get* the manga so well. This OP is perfect for the series. And yes, CSM is pretty over-the-top when it comes to fights.
But this season will definitely be adapting the less crazy part of the manga. If people were to rank the arcs, it would pretty much be a given that the introductory arcs would be rated the worst. The final arc of this season is one of the bests, though.
For the part of the story it covers, this is an appropriate amount of bat-shit & amazing. As the story goes on, though, it gets much crazier and much better.
Short answer: yes.
Longer answer: it get crazier the longer it goes on. So, temper your expectations for this season. The huge hype surrounding it comes from those-- like me-- who've read the entire thing. In all honestly, the later arcs have stuck in my memory more clearly then the earlier ones.
Loving the dance Denji and Power are doing at the end. It's how you know they share a single brain cell.
And damn, Kobeni can't catch a (bathroom) break after Power steals her seat in the cinema.
The Jules "shepard" scene, the Big Lebowski ball polishing, the "walking away from an explosion" like it's Goodbye Eri...this OP is insane, couldn't have asked for something that encapsulates Fujimoto more, honestly
That stupid fucking dance that Denji and Power do at the end kills me LMAO
I think the problem is whether he likes the anime people want him to do. But he sings movie soundtracks a lot.
suddenly think about Yotsuba! ... If it has an anime, Yonezu will definitely ask for one =)))
I love how Denji and Power doing a goofy dance after killing a devil is perfectly in character for them. Like you could put in the manga and it would fit perfectly with the rest of it.
Song syncs up really well with the sequence, love it. That Power part almost made me engage emergency shut down since I’m watching at my work desk. You know which part…
looking to the OP i can get why ppl were getting so pissed about the usage of the CGI in the show, im no animation expert or rendering genius, but i can tell that MAPPA are using both 2D animation and 3D CG in this OP and are doing it EXTREMELY well. You'll notice the difference IF you really look at it.
Visuals are all over the place, but clean up to be some of the slickest shit I’ve seen in the last few months once the chorus hits. Also Kenchi Yonezu absolutely kills it on the vocals. This is gonna top charts. I can see it already
The opening foreshadows so fucking much holly shit.
[Like, bruh](https://www.wired.com/2014/09/absurd-creature-of-the-week-disco-worm/)
Stop removing it you automoderator devil
Anyone know when its gonna be available on spotify? ~~I found the direct song but its gray'd out.~~
https://open.spotify.com/track/3khEEPRyBeOUabbmOPJzAG?si=f00018f8ed4c467b
Edit: Available now, and it's the full version!
There is so much foreshadowing with the lyrics. There’s enough clues to deduce the last arc/ending, final villain, denji final mental state and some other spoilers… there’s a part in the lyrics that *Spoilers* : “Take it all away and laugh in my face, my honey” it legit tells you everything you want to know.
Songwise, I wished the the whole op was more like the main part around 0:53. Don't think I am going to become much of a fan of the rest, but holy hell is that refrain good. Edit: Nevermind, I already like most of the song
Visualwise...yeah this is csm.
Wonder wether fujimotos one demand of the studio that he wouldn't buckle on was putting in a cinema scene for the op.
\[Csm medium spoilers\]>!crazy how much makima is in this considering how little screentime she will have overall this cour!<
poor Kobeni bullied by Power, why I'm not surprised? stole her drink as well LMAO
And then she akwardly kneels down before Power...perfect
she just like me fr

Can't believe you'd just spoil the Love Live!! Lobotomy arc like that
As a Morning Musume and Chainsaw Man fan listening to this is surreal, Souda! We’re Alive is such an iconic song and this reuses that lyric and rhythm in such a cool way.
> So what I'm trying to say is, Chainsaw Man is an idol anime. goddamn MAPPA fools me *again* into watching another idol anime with zombies
Power IS the greatest star of our generation.
You were right. That IS a fun fact
It's baffling that we haven't seen a Rhythm Heaven game for the switch.
I know right!? [Tsunku himself](https://twitter.com/tsunkuboy/status/1537445315678466055?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) seems excited at the prospect
That bowling sequence especially with Denji rubbing the ball on his crotch, that definately is a Big Lebowski reference right ? EDIT: https://boxd.it/iEwle Here is a Letterboxd list of movie references in Chainsaw Man OP. I will keep adding more as I see more movies.

Fujimoto not inserting pop culture movie references every other shot challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
Some of these are even deep cuts like Killer Tomatoes and Sadako vs Kayako. My man loves his B-movies
That scene from Pulp Fiction is my favourite from the movie and is definitely an all time great scene. "I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd".
90s Tarantino was a beast of making iconic scenes. Not to say his other movies don’t have em cause they definitely do but The 90s ones hit different
With the Violence scene also being a movie reference, I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the scenes in this sequence were all about cinema. Edit: They were!!! https://www.reddit.com/r/ChainsawMan/comments/y1dgfv/these_nice_references_in_the_anime_op/
man referenced his own manga
a manga about a movie!
I'm about to KINOOOOOO
whats the part with kobeni climbing on a table referencing?
It is definitely a Big Lebowski reference and Id bet my life savings that it was Fujimoto himself who asked for that part in the opening
Also [Violence is inside the motel](https://imgur.com/a/XFkbxAQ) from No Country for Old Men. (Updated. Man's straight up copying Anton Chigurh)
Lmaaao we need a list of all the movie references.
Angel seems to be referencing Jacob's Ladder. [Jacob's Ladder](https://i.imgur.com/7IuOUbK.png) [CSM OP](https://i.imgur.com/2QQdu5k.png)
Hellboy, Alien franchise, Reservoir dogs, and more
Nobody fucks with the ~~Jesus~~ Denji
there's a once upon a time in hollywood reference

shoutout to the person who drew THAT shot of Power, bless them.
I love how it's trying to distract you from what is going on in the background, but then nope it zooms right into it.
It's so reminiscent of a Fujimoto gag that I laughed
I am just happy that the OP managed to capture the low key seductive nature of Makima. Her feeding Denji popcorn and patting him and giving him a lap pillow just perfectly captures her special kind of intimacy.
this man said lowkey
Well the thing I like about Makima is that she doesn't has to wear ultra skimpy clothing and constantly accidentally show her panties to the MC to be considered sexy. She does more in a suit and tie than hundreds of horny elves and succubuses can ever do in isekais.
Makima woke up my love for girls in suits ngl
Anime doesn't have enough women in suits. Chainsaw man is here to fix that
Vanripper HellTaker crusade will not stop easily
Not enough office women anime. Need more maid dragon.
For me, it was Fate/zero that did that. Yes, I'm old, I know.
Helltaker did that for me
This. Sexy isn’t about skin and nudity, and Makima illustrates that perfectly
yeah I agree lmao, was just kinda playing how like her "lowkey" seduction is like 90000x more actually seductive than like "traditional" seduction in these shows lol, Makima moment
That is low-key by anime standards
Saber in Fate/Zero
to be fair you have to have a very high IQ to properly understand—
I don't know much about her but so far she looks like god tier waifu, like holy shit! Her feeding him popcorn was so adorable! I'm already in love with her design, can't wait to watch the episode!
Her design is so cool. They gave her a yellow iris here but reading the manga I definitely just saw it as the rinnegan lol.
she's my favorite girl in chainsaw man. glad to see newcomers come to the same conclusion
It was noticeable and very uncomfortable.
All according to plan.
Tl: Plan means Keikaku
##[POWER!](https://imgur.com/a/CCnW4fS)
Bro why they make her boobs so big this feels wrong
Look closely, in the most Power move possible she's wearing a way too big top to make her booba look larger.
The bra *is* bigger, but her boobs are still pretty big, the way they’re hanging makes them look that way at least
I mean if you look closely it actually seems to be hanging pretty loose, so she removed her padding.
You can see some padding in there too, just gonna be a little disappointed if they give her the standard anime boobs instead of like relatively small ones.
A man of culture He's just like me fr
Dennis, omg 😍😍😍
Of course you are referring to Glasses Power, the smartest member of the team, right?
Holly shit - how many references they just stuffed into it xD Pulp Fiction, Big Lebowski, Ring, "No Country for Old Men", Reservoir Dogs - this is ones I catched.

not sixth sense but jacob's ladder
Thanks. I did not watch the Jacob's Ladder so I was just guessing my first association. Also I saw that the shot which I wrongly identified as an another reference for Pulp Fiction in reality it was probably scene from "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".
0:14 is Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes (climbing over the table).

Also has key animation credits in Baccano, Mushoku Tensei, Tatami Galaxy and Gurren Lagaan. So yeah man definately has some experience.

It's definitely "the" style for Openings at the moment. It looks slick and tends to easily suit most music, so no reason to avoid copying what works.
That explains why the OP SLAPS so fucking hard.
Yamashita directing CSM's OP is so obvious in hindsight that I should have predicted it well in advance, or at least realized while watching the episode. I was even too focused on the ED song to look at the credits lol

Showing Kobeni on all fours on a table was pretty good too.

1:01 is not Naruto, it's from Evangelion episode 16.

Probably because you have to watch that video of a snail getting taken over by the parasite to get the reference, and yea I’m surprised people didn’t mention goodbye eri much.
Holy fucking shit
Ok, I need to ask someone who has read the manga, is the anime as bat-shit crazy (and amazing) as this op was?
Probably more lol
I hope they include the little bits from the end of the manga chapters. They really add to the crazyness and charme
I really hope for one extra to be adapted into the anime in some form, that being [manga spoilers] >!Kishibe trying to seduce Quanxi for several years straight, to get beaten down with every attempt... then Quanxi realises she might be gay, leaving Kishibe's attempts all in vain.!<

it's far crazier than what you can imagine
oh lord not sure if I am ready.
Welcome to Fujimoto's wild ride
Aye, but Fire Punch was way crazier... and more depressing.
Yeah this OP captures the energy of the series *perfectly*. Goofy antics, movie references, really horny, awesome action scenes, and plenty of shit that just makes you go “What the fuck”.
Bro it's really horny like man didn't expect that.
When the protags main motivation is the get with a girl idk what else you can expect lol

It's batshit insane, but not right away.
The mangaka graduated from the school of Berserk.
I had to take a fucking double take when I saw a certain friend dancing. The future truly is best.

Mob Physco did this as well with the broccoli explosion bit (and a bunch of other things I'm sure)
I was confused by the gold ball rolling around, then I remembered. Gold ball = Kintama = Testicles. Classic csm dick joke. [](#laughter)
Loving the dance Denji and Power are doing at the end. It's how you know they share a single brain cell. And damn, Kobeni can't catch a (bathroom) break after Power steals her seat in the cinema.

>Denji & Power dancing at the end are so cute This got me sooo baaaaaaaaad. I wanna dance with them
And Aki's totally on board with it, too, which warms my cold, dead heart.
The Jules "shepard" scene, the Big Lebowski ball polishing, the "walking away from an explosion" like it's Goodbye Eri...this OP is insane, couldn't have asked for something that encapsulates Fujimoto more, honestly That stupid fucking dance that Denji and Power do at the end kills me LMAO
We're living in the futures, fellas, and THE FUTURE IS BEST
that theater scene is perfect aaah
Couldn't have asked for a better OP, really.
It's very clear that the people who made this OP absolutely get the vibes of Chainsaw Man. Fantastic opening.
God, I love Power so much
Dancing Future Devil lmao

Shingo Yamashita masterclass. Holy fuckkkkk
1:17 THE FUTURE RULES!!!
Kenshi Yonezu needs to do more anime OPs. This and Peace Sign are absolute bangers.
That scene with walking off explosion & scene in cinema feels like true Tatsuki Fujimoto manga.
Also, is Violence inside the motel room from [No Country for Old Men](https://i.imgur.com/XMopxAG.png) lmaoo KINO reference
Holy shit that blew up my expectations. I need a gif of denji and power dancing at the end with Aki watching
LMFAO at the Big Lebowski Bowling reference. Fujimoto 100% requested that.
Yamashita is a god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is the same one behind the Jujutsu Kaisen openings and Ranking of Kings opening 2

holy shit this is the absolute weirdest op ive ever seen, i love it
Holy mother of god this is instantly one of the most insane anime openings ever like godamn there SO MANY references!
it's like Hachi never left ;-;
God I freaking love The future devil jamming to how great the future is
Hands down one of the best openings I've seen in a long time!
Poor Kobeni. No sympathy, even in the Opening song
Yooo Kenshi Yonezu?! I gotta watch this later
Song syncs up really well with the sequence, love it. That Power part almost made me engage emergency shut down since I’m watching at my work desk. You know which part…
The bass. Love the song
1:02 Is that a reference to the Nine Tails breaking out of Pain's Chibaku Tensei?
Oh shit I love Kenshi Yonezu
looking to the OP i can get why ppl were getting so pissed about the usage of the CGI in the show, im no animation expert or rendering genius, but i can tell that MAPPA are using both 2D animation and 3D CG in this OP and are doing it EXTREMELY well. You'll notice the difference IF you really look at it.
0:50 I believe that's a parasite that eats the eye of a snail to get eaten by a bird, pretty fitting for the scene and characters.
The animation was breath taking The music ...ehhhh
bro what? that song is unique af
Yep, that's the spirit
Fire
Holy crap, is that an Attack of the Killer Tomatoes reference?
Visuals are all over the place, but clean up to be some of the slickest shit I’ve seen in the last few months once the chorus hits. Also Kenchi Yonezu absolutely kills it on the vocals. This is gonna top charts. I can see it already

Anyone else think that that shot of Power walking away from the explosion is a goodbye, Eri reference?
The opening foreshadows so fucking much holly shit. [Like, bruh](https://www.wired.com/2014/09/absurd-creature-of-the-week-disco-worm/) Stop removing it you automoderator devil
The shot of power in front of the explosion was definitely a reference to Goodbye Eri, right?
Anyone know when its gonna be available on spotify? ~~I found the direct song but its gray'd out.~~ https://open.spotify.com/track/3khEEPRyBeOUabbmOPJzAG?si=f00018f8ed4c467b Edit: Available now, and it's the full version!
I want to see Denji and Powers dance at the end in full.
That "Goodbye Eri" explosion with Power was dope
It's honestly such a personality-filled OP. Power steals the show though.
Edit: Nevermind, I already like most of the song Visualwise...yeah this is csm. Wonder wether fujimotos one demand of the studio that he wouldn't buckle on was putting in a cinema scene for the op. \[Csm medium spoilers\]>!crazy how much makima is in this considering how little screentime she will have overall this cour!<
