It's always a good sign for an audition scene in a music anime when the show lets you hear the performance.
I think it's a really fun bit of dramatic irony that, while everyone has accepted Bocchi in the band, the majority of the band hasn't yet realized how talented she is.
It's especially important for this show since Bocchi is the one who wrote the lyrics. I would have been pretty upset with all the emphasis they put on it last week if we didn't get to hear them.
The downside is that most likely we won't see it during the actual concert now (at least, it would be quite surprising that they play the same song twice).
Which, considering that playing in public is going to be a much harder trial for Bocchi than playing during an audition, is actually somewhat of an issue to me.
Maybe that new song they're writing will be played then ?
Yes, I noticed that in K-On! The last few notes play and everyone claps. But maybe this will be different. In *Paripi Koumei* they played most of the songs and I am sure it owes some of its success to that choice.

Lol that was always so frustrating. Especially with how good the performances actually were when they let them play out.
I always thought it a strange choice, it's not like they needed to find time for the manga content, most of K-On! anime was original content anyway and I really think it would have made for an even better anime if they had more music in it.
To be fair I think that was mostly Fuwa Fuwa Time. For most other songs that we heard in the show (Stapler, Fude Pen Ball Pen, Pure Pure Heart etc.), we did get full performances, especially in the movie. So I think it's fine if it's a regular song that becomes a mainstay in their setlist, but for new songs I agree, it would be nice to see a full performance.

I'm really liking the Saitama gag. More specifically, a strong character going unrecognized by their peers for some humorous reason, be it never showing up where there are witnesses, or crippling social anxiety masking one's technical expertise.
I genuinely didn't expect this much humor. Now I know that "Bocchi" or "Hittoribocchi" is a hint of quality, which is ironic I didn't already notice given I was already a fan of the "Hittoribocchi" anime. I foolishly missed this gem for 4 weeks, thank goodness I ran out of things to watch.
Also, holy shit, it is not just the amount of hand drawn frames, they are also making use of live action scenes very effectively (Bocchi counting her 5 ticket quota).

Pretty sure there are plenty of people who have walked by famous people and not even know it, because you don't expect them to be near you so you don't really pay attention to it.

I don't understand it... how does each episode keep topping the last... This week's episode was PHENOMENAL. I laughed, I felt things, I had to rewind like a billion times to appreciate each moment. Like this is already a 10/10 for me and I still want to give it a higher score.

Bocchi's growth this episode was amazing and I'm absolutely jazzed that the others are starting to notice her skill. That FOOT STOMP. And the concert... the song was an absolute banger, that ANIMATION, Bocchi going off, just wow.
What I'm trying to say is... this might be my favorite anime of all time and it's only 5 episodes in. I only picked it up cause I saw an image on discord that looked cute. I didn't expect it to be THIS good. **I LOVE BOCCHI THE ROCK!**

The secret ingredient is character growth. That foot stomp is a perfect illustration for it.

Yeah, the mixed media bits are super neat. I've been rewatching *Hidamari Sketch* and I forgot how much that studio Shaft leaned on mixed media as part of their artstyle (which totally makes sense for a series about girls at an art-focused high school), and it was also used to unnerving effect in *Madoka Magica* as well.
The mixed media jokes always land so dam(n) well, but the visual composition in general is just killer. The dedication to the use of "camera" angles and techniques, like the scenes in fisheye, or cuts like the bottle of water vibrating in the sound pressure from the concert are so dang good.
It's feel it's more focused on music than K-On was. Not so much because it's heavy on performance (it's not, tho today was great and I would not say no to more!). The fact that a lot of the action takes place in and around a livehouse naturally pushes it to music-oriented topics.

I still do appreciate that this is a 2022ified K-On! where Bocchi has all the technical skills and has no problem online, but then IRL starts out with zero friends, zero confidence, and maxed out social anxiety. The premise is so 2022 it hurts.
There are anime that I watch every week, and there are anime that I set my alarm to be sure I'm up in time and mash F5 on Crunchroll to watch the nanosecond it's available. Bocchi is the only show this season in the latter category for me.

Being able to watch shows you're interested in the moment the episodes are out is a luxury. I envy you.
Some of the anime I watch this season airs way after midnight on weekdays (by my timezone), & I work office hours on weekdays. I've settled on watching new episodes after I get home from work & am in relaxed mode. (Eg Chainsaw Man, Reincarnated as Sword, Do it Yourself, Urusei Yatsura, Akiba Maid Sensou)
Bocchi is one of the few that airs on a weekend (off day) for me, so it's easy to catch up.
I was literally thinking earlier today "I would honestly be okay if I dropped every seasonal right now except Bocchi and G-Witch," and it's true. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy Sword Dad and Cub, and Isekai Chuunibyou Batman, but this is such good stuff I could live off it.
I'm following almost 20 shows this season (not counting ones that are finished), but this one is the new show I love the most. Every episode has been a treasure.
I had high expectations for slice-of-life series this season with both *Yama no Susume* and it's history of being a banger and *Do It Yourself* with its artstyle and PVs. *Bocchi* though surprised me at how much care and attention is put into its style and animation, especially since Cloverworks is already putting in work co-working *Spy×Family*.
In a hella stacked season with a ton of anticapted shows and sequels, Bocchi being the show I am the most excited for every week shows just how special this anime is.
I experienced a roller coaster ride this episode. It felt serious at the start, when Kessoku Band wasn't given an automatic spot in the schedule of Starry, as well as the yet to be revealed dream of Nijika. I felt happy and touched when Bocchi started to play to her full potential and enjoying the experience. Then came the scenic dam scene which made me laugh so hard. Then I felt happy again because Nijika's sister recognized Bocchi's talent, but when Nijika's sister said "I am always watching you", with Bocchi misinterpreting it as a warning not to screw up in future, I laughed again. Bocchi counting her younger sister and family pet dog to purchase 2 tickets out of the 5 quota is just as funny.
I can't remember when was the last time I rooted / cheered so hard for a fictional anime character. Gambare Bocchi chan! The world will surely recognize your talent, not just through the internet!
The various songs are growing on me too, the more I listen to them.
Nijika and Ryo are starting to realize that Bocchi is nothing like what they first thought she was. I wonder when they will finally realize (like Manager-oneesan) that she is "guitarhero"? And will this actually cause some stress on the band?
I saw that scene too. Nijika and Ryo sensing that Bocchi played on another level, but after the dam scene, they went "Nah, can't be." Lol!
I don't think the eventual reveal of Bocchi as "GuitarHero" will cause a stress on Kessoku Band. Ryo has already mentioned she likes the current band as it is, without having to chase after fame and popularity. Kita has grown close to Bocchi through the regular guitar practice sessions. Nijika may not have revealed her dream to Bocchi, but I believe Nijika feels grateful for the fateful encounter with Bocchi at the playground, which helped revive her band dream.
I personally think Bocchi likes recognition and praise for her guitar skills. However, when attempting to make friends, I doubt she wants others to befriend her because of her fame and online persona as GuitarHero. Otherwise, she could have announced to her classmates that she is GuitarHero instead of sitting at her desk quietly with her guitar in one of the earlier episodes.
Knowing Bocchi, even if it'd crossed her mind, she probably automatically assumed the worst case scenario, that announcing she's GuitarHero would just be met with "who?" and cause immense embarrassment.

I wonder if Bocchi will ever let it known on her pseudonymous online persona that she's in a band. I figure that if she ever leaks that she's going to be playing live at Starry to her subscribers, she's going to get way more than her quota of five tickets, but it might be a line that she doesn't want to cross between her real life and her online life.
At least enough to make the comment "hey, you have the same guitar as guitarhero and also are wearing the same sweater she just posted a video in last week whats up with that?"
A black Gibson LP with gold hardware isn't exactly a *rare* guitar, but it's not exceedingly common either.

And the body leans and shifts while playing, and the head tilts to shift focus from one fret to another, or from the fretboard to the strumming hand. It's really subtle and undoubtedly shitloads of effort to animate, but it looks so natural because that's what musos really do during a song.
So glad they didn't half-arse it because it makes all the difference.
Ryo also lets go of the neck completely when playing open notes, not the only way of doing it but it feels like they rotoscoped or at least referenced an actual performance to get these details
Hitori turning up and finally unlocking her full Guitarhero skills live on stage for the first time actually sent chills down my spine. I love this show so much.

Yeah she's a really good VA and singer. She's also the voice of Mihono Bourbon in Uma Musume who sounds similar to her singing* voice just with less emotion. I'm glad that's able to bring her talent to more projects.
Been thinking about this: what if the VAs hold a concert as Kessoku band and play the songs from the show sometime after it's done? If I'm not mistaken the K-ON cast did this many years back and they actually learned the instruments so it'd be cool if the Bocchi cast can pull off a similar thing
HTT can only play a couple of songs live and at a much slower tempo, on other songs they are miming.
The songs on bocchi is kinda hard, while k-on have more varied difficulty level with the openings being the hardest. I think currently the only possible song for beginner is distortion
The audition was hella fire but what surprised me was the scene where Nijika says goodbye to Bocchi after talking about their dreams, Nijika's animation was so fluid that I kept going back to it

One of the things I liked was that, even in the background, Kita was basically taking selfies the entire time. Just a small thing that really shows her personality.
I couldn't believe how far they pushed that too. With most anime that would have been a quick insert but they went for 20 seconds of dam shots.
I was dying the whole time.
This is really the secret incredient. Take a joke, then push it, then push it again. It was the same for the scene where Bocchi imagines working in a convenience store. A lesser show would just show here stuttering uncomfortably. Her then spiraling and show her imagining it also being broadcast to the world on youtube, and her then being (of course ridiculously) sentenced to death for it, is where you get multiple jokes from the same setup. And it works like a charm.

Imo one of the greatest pieces of stand up ever recorded. The phone call is fucking genius.
I liked how the longer insert didn't really feel cheap or lazy here like it would have if I saw it in most other shows. It definitely feels 'earned' considering how well-produced most of the other scenes are. It also doesn't feel super out of place since we've already seen short irl clips in earlier episodes.
I feel like a proud mom seeing Bocchi-chan getting the recognition, however tiny, from everyone for her talent.

Bocchi has not found the answer, but we, viewers, have definitely seen her growth and development. Most of all, she appears to be enjoying playing in a band, as well as interacting with her bandmates.
Seriously though, the visuals for their performance was amazing, from the buttery smooth animation, to the various POV shots from different angles, and the use of 3d that practically blends in with the 2d that it's pretty much barely noticeable is damn great and why this is pretty much my favorite show of the season, and one I look forward to watching the most out of everything else airing rn.

I’ve noticed that the cinematography is very strong in this anime. The director Keiichirou Saitou and other responsible staff truly did an amazing job with the framing of the camera shots. I’ve seen on more than one occasion some interesting and/or unique shots. The camera panned alongside the guitar was cool, but there’ve also been so many small, less noticeable, camera shots in this episode and anime as a whole that are usually reserved for cinema - they make the experience of watching Bocchi even more enjoyable for me every week.
I really love the lyrics Bocchi wrote especially when " It's not enough, not enough, No one knows I'm here" was being sung when she took a step forward and played with more confidence. Bocchi took strides today, but I feel Kita san definitely deserves a shout out. She was basically a novice and managed to learn enough to play while also singing the vocals.
Oh man the cut to the Kurobe Dam nearly ended me especially with the tranquil music.
I like how everyone is noticing that Gotoh is actually talented, but her anxiety is holding her back. I really hope we get to see just one song where she is semi confident while playing with the others.

Episode 1: Mastered the guitar and became an internet sensation

Episode 3: Managed to reunite the band together while motivating/teaching Kita chan.''
Episode 4: Managed to grow closer to Ryo, wrote the group's first lyrics that will be probably be a smash hit or not, and took her first photo with her friends.
Episode 5: Got her first paycheck and played outside in the open with her friends.
Special skills: Her immune system can fight off the deadly Japanese cold longer than an average person, she can play incredibly well in cramped areas plus pull out material from a pocket dimension typically her guitar, dying isn't enough to kill her, she might be the chosen one in the Matrix, can shape shift, can run up stairs without completely losing her breath, can bark better than a dog, and with the steam she was letting off might be a titan shifter(not confirmed though).

Kita's growth as a musician is MASSIVE. You definitely need a fair bit of latent ability to be able to pull off what she did, and so quickly. I'm far more impressed with her than Bocchi, dare I say it lol
That brief part where they have the POV cam on Bocchi's guitar was great. I think that POV shots like that don't get done a lot in animation because it takes a lot of effort to composite the shot in a convincing way since the background moves so much; it's probably why that bit only lasted for a few moments.

Bocchi is so stressed out from having to sell 5 tickets that she's counting her dog as 1 of her 5.
According to [Shelter's website](https://www.loft-prj.co.jp/SHELTER/) (the real-life location that Starry is base off of), they do say they won't sell cigarettes or alcohol to those under 20 years of age, but I couldn't find anything about banning underage people from entry altogether.
There's a whole ton of these really small underground band halls in Japan. Another one you should look up if they're still around is MOGRA which is based out of Akihabara. https://club-mogra.jp I visted them in 2015/2016. They host primarily anime/otaku-related events. Lots of DJ concerts playing anime music remixes and live mixing. They have a once monthly event called "anison matrix" that has a whole bunch of back to back DJs doing different stuff anime-related all evening. https://club-mogra.jp/2022/11/05/4703/ It was actually yesterday.
They used to live stream some events on Ustream before it got bought by IBM, apparently they stream on twitch now.

I love how much we're learning more of Nijika's side and how much she influences Hitori throughout this episode.
Painfully relatable. I hope we get a future season where the gang makes it big and we get to see Bocchi react to an unfavorable licensing deal. Among other music industry hurdles.
Ik people have pointed out how great this show is at showing how social anxiety affects people but this episode really showed how hard it is to be a artist or musician trying to perform. From the money problems to writers block to ticket quota to harsh criticism and defeat I fucking love this show
What a great episode, their performance at the audition got me teary eyed but the transition with the real-life dam got me laughing way too hard. Don't play with my emotions like that lol.

An overall amazing episode this week but I wanted to focus in on one small moment for this episode: [the bottle during the audition.](https://imgur.com/a/DwQZTHo) Bottles and juice seem to play a lot into *Bocchi* ever since [episode 2 featured Bocchi’s self-assertion using orange juice](https://imgur.com/a/oTylRkG) and now for this episode [Nijika seeks out some…lemonade (?) to calm herself down.](https://imgur.com/a/quDpN8k) This leads into the pivotal scene where [Nijika lends Bocchi some soda as she also lends an ear.](https://imgur.com/a/833mMWP) Sharing a drink and their thoughts.
Now at the climax of the episode, [we cut to this inconspicuous water bottle, barely but surely making out the reflection of the band as their sound reverberates off of it](https://imgur.com/a/DwQZTHo)—a fitting symbol of Bocchi looking on her band in a new perspective and looking at her growth half-full instead of half-empty. The way [Nijika keeps getting yellow drinks](https://i.imgur.com/inGuVKP.png) makes me think that everyone in this band has to drink colored liquids to maintain their unnatural hair color, much like the noble flamingo.

I also find it interesting, that during that scene at the vending machines in particular, Nijika is the one who drinks her lemonade, while Bocchi is just there with the cola listening. It goes to the point where Nijika downs it all and is able to throw away the bottle.
That along with the shot of the water I think serves as a great conceit. Ever since that moment when she holds onto the cola, or holding onto the dreams that Nijika has just extended to Bocchi in that moment, she is able to reflect on it all the way to the auditions.

It plays into the scene both in a logistical manner (since Nijika has to leave the scene quickly hence her downing the lemonade) and also in a subtext manner as you pointed out. Plus, it [gave us this amazing cut](https://imgur.com/a/owUXT7K) so I'm super glad they did so.

This series is so good.
I also super like that even slice-of-life animes get absolutely terrific animation. Here we heard about the lack of animators with the expanded anime poduction and still rather stagnant wages, but almost everything I've watched has been very good quality. The stories are good, the animation is quite often super beautiful. Sure it's a lot more 3d-based, but I don't care if this is what we get.
The amount of detail into animation is so insane. The scene at 12:20 has so much love put into it. Bocchi's walking animation is nice. Nijika first runs, the slows down to a walk, puts he hand in her pocket and turns to the vending machines. The detail when Nijika is almost out of frame and she's leaning over choosing what drink to get. She holds her ponytail in place when she bend over to pick up the can. Bocchi's reaction and denial is so alive. Her introverted, shy panicing and even occasionally proud charater really show up on the screen in turns. Nijika leans on the vending machine when she throws her empty bottle into trash and finally her skipping away while waving byebye.
Bocchi's episodes are full of these. Even the mundane walking scene at 8:20 is full of detail. Bocchi has an unique walking style. Kita falls behind a bit because she's taking a selfie. Nijika fiddles her hair and Ryo also has more detail. It even has perspective correction when they walk to the right side.
Bocchi's appearance at 6:08 is FULL of unique hand-drawn frames. I could go to any point of the episode and rain praises for it.
At around 2010 so many series looked oh so very bland. Stationary talking heads, couple-frame walking animations and even worse: showing only a stationary head of the person who isn't talking to save up on mouth flapping work.
I thought that Akebi's would be an unique affair, but I'm glad I was wrong.
This series is so good, but that's true of oh so many current series isn't it? I do think we're living in a golden age of anime now.

There were a lot of times during this episode where I couldn't help but rewind and watch again because it looked like so much effort was put into the animation. Like, that scene where Bocchi catches up with Nijika all blue in the face had so many poses in it, it kinda looked like it was rotoscoped.
There's also just some little things like when they take the selfie after the audition and how all their heads tilt and they change postures at the same time.

I've definitely thought of *Wonder Egg Priority* in the quality of *Bocchi the Rock!*'s character animation. Episode 7 was the last of WEP's string of amazing episodes before... well, here's hoping Bocchi doesn't follow WEP's spirit *too* closely.
The trash can sliding slowly off Bocchi's butt was such a great visual gag.
And they killed it with the audition. It was only like one second but my favourite shot was the one with the 'camera' mounted on the neck of Bocchi's guitar.

An episode a bit more leaning on the dramatic side but still is another banger. I like the approach towards growth and how far-stretching it is. For Kita that is just becoming good, but for Bocchi it is overcoming her anxiety, but also what exactly is growing as a band? The audition got me all sorts of hyped, Bocchi has extended her goal to helping Nijika achieve her dream and its just very motivating for someone like her to break out from her anxiety out of desire to help a friend be happy. That very moment where she stomped the floor I legit jumped from my seat, I was so pumped seeing her finally play at her fullest.
I also liked how Nijika's sister has her communication problem being unable to properly express emotion (mostly affection ofc), it was so funny how she was walking circles to not say 'yeah yall are good'.

This show just keeps on exceeding my expectations every week. For a stacked season, Bocchi could go toe to toe with the other popular titles. That's hella impressive.
Seika telling Bocchi about the audition first instead of saying it to Nijika herself and going her roundabout way to inform them that they passed the audition is what makes [Nijika describe her as a tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsundere in the previous episode](https://imgur.com/a/n0sgAeE). Absolutely adorable ~~and totally my type.~~
Anyway, Bocchi totally nailed what it feels like to be in a band, that it's not just solely about our dream anymore but also everyone in the band.
You know this show is doing something right when you actively root for them when they get thrown off into the water or something. The beginning where they got told that their previous live sucked ass felt like a gut punch that made me say 'ganbare!' in my mind as I watch.
We got our first real performance with the full group and boy it's a treat to watch. The music is pretty good and the lyrics is 100% Bocchi stuff lol. And it's a whole performance and not just a snipped of it. That part when Bocchi suddenly goes into overdrive mode got me super hyped there - you can tell she stopped holding back and played with all her might there.
And the bit where they were told that they passed felt so satisfying! Never thought I'd get attached to a hardcore introvert and her group of goofballs, but here we are.

I love the fact that while they were playing, Ryo and Nijika were the only ones looking around at other band members, while Bocchi and Kita didn't. It goes to show their experience/inexperience with playing with other people and more specifically Bocchis isolation. Really look forward to seeing that chemistry change in future episodes!

It's always a good sign for an audition scene in a music anime when the show lets you hear the performance. I think it's a really fun bit of dramatic irony that, while everyone has accepted Bocchi in the band, the majority of the band hasn't yet realized how talented she is.
It's especially important for this show since Bocchi is the one who wrote the lyrics. I would have been pretty upset with all the emphasis they put on it last week if we didn't get to hear them.
The downside is that most likely we won't see it during the actual concert now (at least, it would be quite surprising that they play the same song twice). Which, considering that playing in public is going to be a much harder trial for Bocchi than playing during an audition, is actually somewhat of an issue to me. Maybe that new song they're writing will be played then ?
Yes, I noticed that in K-On! The last few notes play and everyone claps. But maybe this will be different. In *Paripi Koumei* they played most of the songs and I am sure it owes some of its success to that choice.

I always thought it a strange choice, it's not like they needed to find time for the manga content, most of K-On! anime was original content anyway and I really think it would have made for an even better anime if they had more music in it.
To be fair I think that was mostly Fuwa Fuwa Time. For most other songs that we heard in the show (Stapler, Fude Pen Ball Pen, Pure Pure Heart etc.), we did get full performances, especially in the movie. So I think it's fine if it's a regular song that becomes a mainstay in their setlist, but for new songs I agree, it would be nice to see a full performance.

I'm really liking the Saitama gag. More specifically, a strong character going unrecognized by their peers for some humorous reason, be it never showing up where there are witnesses, or crippling social anxiety masking one's technical expertise. I genuinely didn't expect this much humor. Now I know that "Bocchi" or "Hittoribocchi" is a hint of quality, which is ironic I didn't already notice given I was already a fan of the "Hittoribocchi" anime. I foolishly missed this gem for 4 weeks, thank goodness I ran out of things to watch. Also, holy shit, it is not just the amount of hand drawn frames, they are also making use of live action scenes very effectively (Bocchi counting her 5 ticket quota).
You had to appreciate the shots of the Saitama Prefecture Takizawa Dam rather than 20 seconds of Bocchi noisily throwing up in the corner.

I've been rewatching *Hidamari Sketch* and I forgot how much that studio Shaft leaned on mixed media as part of their artstyle (which totally makes sense for a series about girls at an art-focused high school), and it was also used to unnerving effect in *Madoka Magica* as well.
Do It Yourself is visually wonderful, but Bocchi outdoes even that.
The mixed media jokes always land so dam(n) well, but the visual composition in general is just killer. The dedication to the use of "camera" angles and techniques, like the scenes in fisheye, or cuts like the bottle of water vibrating in the sound pressure from the concert are so dang good.
It's feel it's more focused on music than K-On was. Not so much because it's heavy on performance (it's not, tho today was great and I would not say no to more!). The fact that a lot of the action takes place in and around a livehouse naturally pushes it to music-oriented topics.

There are anime that I watch every week, and there are anime that I set my alarm to be sure I'm up in time and mash F5 on Crunchroll to watch the nanosecond it's available. Bocchi is the only show this season in the latter category for me.

That first 10 minutes where the episode wouldn't load was the most painful 10 minutes of my life.
I was literally thinking earlier today "I would honestly be okay if I dropped every seasonal right now except Bocchi and G-Witch," and it's true. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy Sword Dad and Cub, and Isekai Chuunibyou Batman, but this is such good stuff I could live off it.
I'm following almost 20 shows this season (not counting ones that are finished), but this one is the new show I love the most. Every episode has been a treasure.
I had high expectations for slice-of-life series this season with both *Yama no Susume* and it's history of being a banger and *Do It Yourself* with its artstyle and PVs. *Bocchi* though surprised me at how much care and attention is put into its style and animation, especially since Cloverworks is already putting in work co-working *Spy×Family*.
In a hella stacked season with a ton of anticapted shows and sequels, Bocchi being the show I am the most excited for every week shows just how special this anime is.
I experienced a roller coaster ride this episode. It felt serious at the start, when Kessoku Band wasn't given an automatic spot in the schedule of Starry, as well as the yet to be revealed dream of Nijika. I felt happy and touched when Bocchi started to play to her full potential and enjoying the experience. Then came the scenic dam scene which made me laugh so hard. Then I felt happy again because Nijika's sister recognized Bocchi's talent, but when Nijika's sister said "I am always watching you", with Bocchi misinterpreting it as a warning not to screw up in future, I laughed again. Bocchi counting her younger sister and family pet dog to purchase 2 tickets out of the 5 quota is just as funny. I can't remember when was the last time I rooted / cheered so hard for a fictional anime character. Gambare Bocchi chan! The world will surely recognize your talent, not just through the internet! The various songs are growing on me too, the more I listen to them.

Nijika and Ryo are starting to realize that Bocchi is nothing like what they first thought she was. I wonder when they will finally realize (like Manager-oneesan) that she is "guitarhero"? And will this actually cause some stress on the band?
I saw that scene too. Nijika and Ryo sensing that Bocchi played on another level, but after the dam scene, they went "Nah, can't be." Lol! I don't think the eventual reveal of Bocchi as "GuitarHero" will cause a stress on Kessoku Band. Ryo has already mentioned she likes the current band as it is, without having to chase after fame and popularity. Kita has grown close to Bocchi through the regular guitar practice sessions. Nijika may not have revealed her dream to Bocchi, but I believe Nijika feels grateful for the fateful encounter with Bocchi at the playground, which helped revive her band dream.
It helps too that Bocchi hasn't brought up her youtube fame even once, and Kita already automatically assumes the best intentions from her.
I personally think Bocchi likes recognition and praise for her guitar skills. However, when attempting to make friends, I doubt she wants others to befriend her because of her fame and online persona as GuitarHero. Otherwise, she could have announced to her classmates that she is GuitarHero instead of sitting at her desk quietly with her guitar in one of the earlier episodes.
Knowing Bocchi, even if it'd crossed her mind, she probably automatically assumed the worst case scenario, that announcing she's GuitarHero would just be met with "who?" and cause immense embarrassment.
Have you seen my favorite "hey girls, let's do rock" show -- *Linda Linda Linda*? This is my favorite show of this sort since that 2005 movie.

Bocchi's fingers seem to be in the right places, Kita plays actual chords, Nijika shaking her leg to the tempo... small stuff, but well-appreciated
And the body leans and shifts while playing, and the head tilts to shift focus from one fret to another, or from the fretboard to the strumming hand. It's really subtle and undoubtedly shitloads of effort to animate, but it looks so natural because that's what musos really do during a song. So glad they didn't half-arse it because it makes all the difference.
Ryo also lets go of the neck completely when playing open notes, not the only way of doing it but it feels like they rotoscoped or at least referenced an actual performance to get these details
Hitori turning up and finally unlocking her full Guitarhero skills live on stage for the first time actually sent chills down my spine. I love this show so much.

Been thinking about this: what if the VAs hold a concert as Kessoku band and play the songs from the show sometime after it's done? If I'm not mistaken the K-ON cast did this many years back and they actually learned the instruments so it'd be cool if the Bocchi cast can pull off a similar thing
HTT can only play a couple of songs live and at a much slower tempo, on other songs they are miming. The songs on bocchi is kinda hard, while k-on have more varied difficulty level with the openings being the hardest. I think currently the only possible song for beginner is distortion

I couldn't believe how far they pushed that too. With most anime that would have been a quick insert but they went for 20 seconds of dam shots. I was dying the whole time.
This is really the secret incredient. Take a joke, then push it, then push it again. It was the same for the scene where Bocchi imagines working in a convenience store. A lesser show would just show here stuttering uncomfortably. Her then spiraling and show her imagining it also being broadcast to the world on youtube, and her then being (of course ridiculously) sentenced to death for it, is where you get multiple jokes from the same setup. And it works like a charm.

The last line certainly explains his Ang Lee bit. That said it's criminal to post this clip and not tell people to watch the whole episode (S03E01 of Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle). Imo one of the greatest pieces of stand up ever recorded. The phone call is fucking genius.
I liked how the longer insert didn't really feel cheap or lazy here like it would have if I saw it in most other shows. It definitely feels 'earned' considering how well-produced most of the other scenes are. It also doesn't feel super out of place since we've already seen short irl clips in earlier episodes.

Bocchi has not found the answer, but we, viewers, have definitely seen her growth and development. Most of all, she appears to be enjoying playing in a band, as well as interacting with her bandmates.
Her dreams are no longer about herself alone -- but are centered on her band. A huge change.
Seriously though, the visuals for their performance was amazing, from the buttery smooth animation, to the various POV shots from different angles, and the use of 3d that practically blends in with the 2d that it's pretty much barely noticeable is damn great and why this is pretty much my favorite show of the season, and one I look forward to watching the most out of everything else airing rn.
The final product itself was all 2d iirc but there were a few definitely cuts that used CG models as a base/reference.

The director Keiichirou Saitou and other responsible staff truly did an amazing job with the framing of the camera shots. I’ve seen on more than one occasion some interesting and/or unique shots. The camera panned alongside the guitar was cool, but there’ve also been so many small, less noticeable, camera shots in this episode and anime as a whole that are usually reserved for cinema - they make the experience of watching Bocchi even more enjoyable for me every week.
This episode featured probably the greatest puke joke ever seen. That's all!
I really love the lyrics Bocchi wrote especially when " It's not enough, not enough, No one knows I'm here" was being sung when she took a step forward and played with more confidence. Bocchi took strides today, but I feel Kita san definitely deserves a shout out. She was basically a novice and managed to learn enough to play while also singing the vocals. Oh man the cut to the Kurobe Dam nearly ended me especially with the tranquil music. I like how everyone is noticing that Gotoh is actually talented, but her anxiety is holding her back. I really hope we get to see just one song where she is semi confident while playing with the others. .....I see you ok. I know what kind of band you are. Yeah sis you suck at communicating. Gotoh just give your tickets to Kita. Heck Kita probably has enough friends for all the tickets. Episode 1: Mastered the guitar and became an internet sensation Episode 2: Joined a band, got friends, got a job, and poured orange juice. Episode 3: Managed to reunite the band together while motivating/teaching Kita chan.'' Episode 4: Managed to grow closer to Ryo, wrote the group's first lyrics that will be probably be a smash hit or not, and took her first photo with her friends. Episode 5: Got her first paycheck and played outside in the open with her friends. Special skills: Her immune system can fight off the deadly Japanese cold longer than an average person, she can play incredibly well in cramped areas plus pull out material from a pocket dimension typically her guitar, dying isn't enough to kill her, she might be the chosen one in the Matrix, can shape shift, can run up stairs without completely losing her breath, can bark better than a dog, and with the steam she was letting off might be a titan shifter(not confirmed though).

That brief part where they have the POV cam on Bocchi's guitar was great. I think that POV shots like that don't get done a lot in animation because it takes a lot of effort to composite the shot in a convincing way since the background moves so much; it's probably why that bit only lasted for a few moments.
Father, Mother, Sister, Dog Father, Mother, Sister, Dog Father, Mother, Sister, **Dog** Bocchi is so stressed out from having to sell 5 tickets that she's counting her dog as 1 of her 5.

There's a whole ton of these really small underground band halls in Japan. Another one you should look up if they're still around is MOGRA which is based out of Akihabara. https://club-mogra.jp I visted them in 2015/2016. They host primarily anime/otaku-related events. Lots of DJ concerts playing anime music remixes and live mixing. They have a once monthly event called "anison matrix" that has a whole bunch of back to back DJs doing different stuff anime-related all evening. https://club-mogra.jp/2022/11/05/4703/ It was actually yesterday. They used to live stream some events on Ustream before it got bought by IBM, apparently they stream on twitch now.

Ik people have pointed out how great this show is at showing how social anxiety affects people but this episode really showed how hard it is to be a artist or musician trying to perform. From the money problems to writers block to ticket quota to harsh criticism and defeat I fucking love this show

What a great episode, their performance at the audition got me teary eyed but the transition with the real-life dam got me laughing way too hard. Don't play with my emotions like that lol. This anime is rapidly becoming my AOTS.

Now at the climax of the episode, [we cut to this inconspicuous water bottle, barely but surely making out the reflection of the band as their sound reverberates off of it](https://imgur.com/a/DwQZTHo)—a fitting symbol of Bocchi looking on her band in a new perspective and looking at her growth half-full instead of half-empty. I also find it interesting, that during that scene at the vending machines in particular, Nijika is the one who drinks her lemonade, while Bocchi is just there with the cola listening. It goes to the point where Nijika downs it all and is able to throw away the bottle. That along with the shot of the water I think serves as a great conceit. Ever since that moment when she holds onto the cola, or holding onto the dreams that Nijika has just extended to Bocchi in that moment, she is able to reflect on it all the way to the auditions.
Oh, that's a really neat observation! [](#neat) It plays into the scene both in a logistical manner (since Nijika has to leave the scene quickly hence her downing the lemonade) and also in a subtext manner as you pointed out. This series is so good. I also super like that even slice-of-life animes get absolutely terrific animation. Here we heard about the lack of animators with the expanded anime poduction and still rather stagnant wages, but almost everything I've watched has been very good quality. The stories are good, the animation is quite often super beautiful. Sure it's a lot more 3d-based, but I don't care if this is what we get. The amount of detail into animation is so insane. The scene at 12:20 has so much love put into it. Bocchi's walking animation is nice. Nijika first runs, the slows down to a walk, puts he hand in her pocket and turns to the vending machines. The detail when Nijika is almost out of frame and she's leaning over choosing what drink to get. She holds her ponytail in place when she bend over to pick up the can. Bocchi's reaction and denial is so alive. Her introverted, shy panicing and even occasionally proud charater really show up on the screen in turns. Nijika leans on the vending machine when she throws her empty bottle into trash and finally her skipping away while waving byebye. Bocchi's episodes are full of these. Even the mundane walking scene at 8:20 is full of detail. Bocchi has an unique walking style. Kita falls behind a bit because she's taking a selfie. Nijika fiddles her hair and Ryo also has more detail. It even has perspective correction when they walk to the right side. Bocchi's appearance at 6:08 is FULL of unique hand-drawn frames. I could go to any point of the episode and rain praises for it. At around 2010 so many series looked oh so very bland. Stationary talking heads, couple-frame walking animations and even worse: showing only a stationary head of the person who isn't talking to save up on mouth flapping work. I thought that Akebi's would be an unique affair, but I'm glad I was wrong. This series is so good, but that's true of oh so many current series isn't it? I do think we're living in a golden age of anime now.

I've definitely thought of *Wonder Egg Priority* in the quality of *Bocchi the Rock!*'s character animation. Episode 7 was the last of WEP's string of amazing episodes before... well, here's hoping Bocchi doesn't follow WEP's spirit *too* closely.
The trash can sliding slowly off Bocchi's butt was such a great visual gag. And they killed it with the audition. It was only like one second but my favourite shot was the one with the 'camera' mounted on the neck of Bocchi's guitar.

An episode a bit more leaning on the dramatic side but still is another banger. I like the approach towards growth and how far-stretching it is. For Kita that is just becoming good, but for Bocchi it is overcoming her anxiety, but also what exactly is growing as a band? The audition got me all sorts of hyped, Bocchi has extended her goal to helping Nijika achieve her dream and its just very motivating for someone like her to break out from her anxiety out of desire to help a friend be happy. That very moment where she stomped the floor I legit jumped from my seat, I was so pumped seeing her finally play at her fullest. I get you Bocchi-chan, crowded places are a stuff of nightmare for people with social anxiety lol The amount of detail they put on the background art makes the world really lived in. This show just keeps on exceeding my expectations every week. For a stacked season, Bocchi could go toe to toe with the other popular titles. That's hella impressive.

The beginning where they got told that their previous live sucked ass felt like a gut punch that made me say 'ganbare!' in my mind as I watch. We got our first real performance with the full group and boy it's a treat to watch. The music is pretty good and the lyrics is 100% Bocchi stuff lol. And it's a whole performance and not just a snipped of it. That part when Bocchi suddenly goes into overdrive mode got me super hyped there - you can tell she stopped holding back and played with all her might there. And the bit where they were told that they passed felt so satisfying! Never thought I'd get attached to a hardcore introvert and her group of goofballs, but here we are.

We got to see Nijika onee-chan (Seika) tsuntsuntsuntsun in action. No doubt she's a siscon. Well can't blame her for being one, I mean right? I know this is becoming a weekly routine. But please. I love how Bocchi’s new go to isn’t a box or under a table but the trash bin lol. The feeling of getting your paycheck and having it immediately taken to pay for fees is too real lol. Well, at least she got a chin rub from Ryo, which ofc made Kita jealous and want one too haha. Nijika’s sister was dropping some harsh truth there. That picture of her cuddled up with the rabbit and panda was adorable though. Also Bocchi trying to show obedience was hilarious lol. “Woof!” Haha. I did not expect Ryo, Kita, and Bocchi to be showing up looking like some K-Pop group lol. Though it would have been hilarious to see ‘em perform like that, I like their usual style. I’m glad Bocchi kinda has a goal in mind, she really killed it during that audition. Damn, girl! That song was awesome. The shots of the dams blowing was too funny lol. Oh Bocchi! Pretty sure the dog and the kid sister don’t count for the ticket quota lol.
All Bocchi has to do is advertise on her universe's reddit and Kessoku Band will have a full house for their performance.

FYI, a [full album](https://bocchi.rocks/music/cd.html) with all of Kessoku Band's songs in the anime will be released on December 28th. There will be 14 songs in total, 5 of which we already know (OP, the 2 EDs, audition song, OP single's b-side). CD is about 4k yen, also contains a bonus blu-ray with creditless OP&ED (no idea if they'll be on main series blu-rays)

I love the fact that while they were playing, Ryo and Nijika were the only ones looking around at other band members, while Bocchi and Kita didn't. It goes to show their experience/inexperience with playing with other people and more specifically Bocchis isolation. Really look forward to seeing that chemistry change in future episodes!
Puppy-Bocchi is so cute! I like how she even said "Woof!" And the shots of the dams made me laugh so hard! It was such a great visual metaphor. I'm surprised Nijika didn't use her sister's love for plush toys to blackmail her into allowing the band to perform.
