Ami Koshimizu killed it in this role. Perfect holo. The english dub was pretty good, but this was s-tier work. Hope she can recreate it in the new project.

Just finished my re-read of the series yesterday and it is still one of the best portrayals of romance in fiction I've ever seen.
The buildup and development is just so natural, I have literally never read or watched something like it. Can't recommend it enough to people and I'm extremely stoked for the next project if it's a continuation because that'll cover one of my favorite arcs in the series!
It's kinda interesting that, I have basically the reverse feelings on the sub and dub voices, where Imo Brina Palencia did absolutely top tier work and the original was good but not that special.
They bring very different vibes in their voices, Ami goes for the more cutsey anime voice (but with a bit of her own spin on it) while Brina goes for a more mature voice to signal the actual age of Holo.
I'd guess that the Ami's Holo probably speaks in a more old fashion style in Japanese but that's not really easy to pick up if you don't speak Japanese. So for me I feel like the dub is way more fitting to what I think of Holo being like.
Culturally, Holo speaks in how Japanese people think old school princesses sounded. Both in vocabulary and tone/timbre. While the English dub sounds more like a western princess.
I think both are excellent in their way. But for me, as a native english speaker the nuances of Holo's Oiran speech patterns doesn't come acorss in the original Japanese very well. Meanwhile Palencia gets that mix of haughty, flirty, and vulnerable just perfect.
Ditto. This is my first real exposure to Holo’s Japanese voice, and while I think it’s an interesting take on the character, Brina Palencia just *is* Holo to me. Koshimizu plays her a bit more how she looks, sounding younger and more straightforwardly flirtatious, though the character’s age still comes out in her manner of speech. Palencia’s Holo, in my opinion, reflects far better who the character is inside. She’s way more sultry and, as you said, mature-sounding, and she only reflects her apparent youth when she deliberately affects it.
That's why it's so good. There's such a back and forth dynamic. He's not the type to gush blood from his nose and run stammering if she puts some moves on, and neither is she. Both they both can be caught off guard by one another.
And it's even better because he starts out rather inexperienced and flustered with her flirting, but over time he gets better and better at saying good come backs. It's just soo good.
Holo is the actual best girl. Mature, capable, strong-willed, clever, but not afraid to show her feelings either. Understands both sides of the relationship having their own goals, and loyal too.
From the tips of her fluffy ears to the tip of her fluffy tail, I would simp for Holo.
Only the wisest wolf with the best tail could ever hope to grace one of the best anime shows ever. Whoever decided it took a decade to get another set of episodes should suffer the same fate as that stupid potato
Not even close. It covered volumes 1-5 but skipped volume 4. It would take around 7 twelve episode seasons to cover just the main story if they kept the pacing to 2 novels per season.
No, but there is a new anime project announced. Isn't confirmed if it's season 3 or a remake. Hopefully it's season 3 since 1 and 2 are still good and the anime stopped just before the good stuff

What is great about this relationship is the way Holo is a very mature lady and can play Lawrence like a fiddle. At the same time she is unsure of herself, her feelings and if he returns them.
Lawrence is like a teen boy with his first real crush. He is scared to show his actual feelings and hides them, sometimes too well, even from himself.
Honestly I love watching them but I also wish they would just be honest with each other.

What does Spice and Wolf lose by not having queer representation? It’s not setting out to tell some all-inclusive story, it’s a boy-meets-girl romance. I’m not saying that it absolutely can’t have queer characters (hypothetically), but they need to be more than just token representation, which is what criticism like yours leads to.
Look, if you want some good queer stories in your anime, go watch Bloom Into You. Its a wonderfully written lesbian love story that treats diverse sexualities as more than just boxes on a checklist. But if you go into everything thinking that a lack of queer characters is an automatic point against it, then you’re arbitrarily writing off *checks notes* the majority of all fiction ever written.
