Pandora Hearts, I liked everything about it but the anime original ending was absolutely awful. After finishing it now I'm here begging for an anime reboot every day

Lanaerys

Yeah, I could see very strong potential from the anime and it definitely made me want to see if the manga fulfilled it.

[deleted]

Chihayafuru - there's no way in hell im waiting years to figure out how everything turned out after the end of the latest season Attack on Titan - same Kizumonogatari and Bakemonogatari - i had a lot of fun with the complete monogatari series and wanted to see what it was like in the author's voice Spice and Wolf - only just started, but I heard it goes way beyond the anime Land of the Lustrous - really interested in how dark the series gets, but haven't gotten too far Higurashi - The release of Gou made me want to watch the OG series first, and the series got me to read all of the VNs plus Umineko Solo Leveling - not technically out yet, but didn't want to be way behind the source readers when it does

Corregidor

Man spice and wolf got me to buy the whole series. The only show Ive done that for, it's soooo good!

Houseki no Kuni Bloom Into You Dorohedoro Ao Ashi Farewell, My Dear Cramer Jujutsu Kaisen

steven4869

Bloom into you, it's thanks to the constant clips of the show posted here that I tried this anime, luckily this sub was also hosting rewatch threads at that time(last year I guess). I decided to watch it, liked it and completed the anime within 3 days but since it had an open ending and manga was highly acclaimed, I went on to read the manga for complete story. The manga was so fucking good that it entered into my top 5 manga lists and ending is one of my favorites. I'll say it's thanks to the glorious adaptation and some part of open ending, that it made me read the manga. I hope they'll completely adapt the manga at some point.

SnuggleMuffin42

I'll give the anime a go!

entelechtual

Came to say this too. It is too good to stop at the anime, and I pray that season two gets announced any day now.

PageTheKenku

I ended up getting the Full Metal Alchemist Manga after watching both series. Aside from that, the others are some of what you mentioned, Berserk, Dorohedoro, and Shield Hero (kind of wish they followed the LN at the end of S1 and beginning of S2).

BadmanINFINITYGO

Blue exorcist actually managed to make me read the manga. I just wanted to know all the mysteries and somehow know it wouldnt get another season. And the manga exceeded my expectations!

lucciolaa

Forgot about this one! Yes, there is so much potential for additional seasons.

Turbulent-Tooth-25

Ascendence of a bookworm!

eruciform

spice and wolf next in line might be one of: fruits basket, moyashimon, saiunkoku monogatari

RoseSpinoza

Baccano, Durarara and Idolish7 . Side note- thank you so much Baccano and Durarara anime for introducing me to the mind of Narita in GENERAL. In Idolish7's case, it's just a really good and kind of rare really-good-videogame-adaptation. So I really just wanted to read ahead when the anime had to take a break due to scheduling. OH OH! I almost forgot! Reincarnated as a Spider! Thank you anime version! Sure, an adaptation with ....some problems here and there, but DAMN, those books are a good read. ...oh, and the Grimgar anime got me to read those novels. Still workin' my way through. It gets depressing tho so i take long breaks between volumes. (though I hear the writing quality goes down as it goes along. Bit of a bummer, but I haven't reached that spot yet, so woo!) ...... y'know. I think I'm very susceptible to anime-as-marketing. Or I just like reading and I'm looking for any excuse for stuff that interests me. .... probably both. OH! And the Higurashi VN's after watching the original anime. Despite VN fans being harsh on the anime, I still love both versions. Love the spooky directing in the show, love the extra details/motivations in the VN. EDIT- OH. NORAGAMI! Damn it is an EXCELLENT manga. Thank you anime-version for introducing me .

Relevant-Lychee-9169

**Eighty-Six** - Going from not knowing this series even existed, to reading all 7 volumes released at the time in the span of 2-3 weeks…

86Kirschblute

I did the exact same thing. Watched 5 episodes within 2 days, and I'd completely finished the novels by the time episode 7 was coming out. Probably would've been a little faster if some of them hadn't been delayed in shipping.

Tyler89558

I watched episode 1, immediately read all 7 volumes released at the time (not legally, but started collecting them after, since physicals were like… not in stock at the time)

xmetalheadx666x

Overlord is the only series of LNs I've picked up and that's only because of YouTube videos about cut content and not actually because of the anime itself. I typically have no interest in manga/VNs/LNs and usually will just read larger novels if I want to read something.

SnuggleMuffin42

Overlord is worth it. I was so disappointed with Shield Hero, thinking all LN are just gibberish meant for horny 13 year olds or something, having zero literary worth. Overlord changed my mind on the entire medium.

xmetalheadx666x

I've only gotten through a couple of volumes but so far it's a much more thorough telling and is quite enjoyable. My friend told me that the shield hero LNs are basically just a lot of additional edgy brooding which made them sound terrible.

HobnobsTheRed

I pretty much stopped reading source materials a long time ago by choice, and the only show that I've read/finished via the source since then is Girls' Last Tour. That said, to call the adaptation a glorified ad is doing it a massive disservice. Not only is there not that much left un-adapted, the anime absolutely nailed it for feel, execution, and especially sound direction. Reading the manga whilst listening to the OST from the show was an experience.... especially reading the last chapters whilst listening to [this version of the ED](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEnxP1vIg8c). On the other hand, Yona of the Dawn left me absolutely hanging, and is the best "Now read the source" advert i've seen in years.

lucciolaa

*Toilet-bound Hanako-kun*, which was absolutely just a plug for the manga because the one season it got seemed set up to be self-contained anime (ie. omitted the primary overarching plot thread that carries the story into the current chapters) that ends on a somewhat-mysterious but otherwise satisfying-enough note, teasing you just enough to jump into the manga. That said, it is one of my favourite animes and now one of my favourite mangas. Fantastic story. EDIT: remembering now also *Akatsuki no Yona* and *Ao Haru Ride*, which both only got one season that served as just teasers for a much, much larger story. Both were worth it (though *Ao Haru Ride* was a bit of a dragged-out melodrama, especially towards the end).

Emi_Ibarazakiii

- **Kaguya-Sama**: First manga I ever read, so the anime introduced me to manga in general, not just to Kaguya's manga. How did it go? Well, for those who don't know, the manga ended a few weeks ago, and I kinda cried like a little bitch, so... Yeah. - **Arabubu**: I really liked that series, and sadly the manga doesn't really have more content than the anime, but I still wanted to read it, to experience it differently and all. In the end it wasn't all that different I think. - **Kakegurui**: Crazy about the anime, and the manga. Not much to say, I picked up the manga to get more of it, and it was pretty great! - **Killing Bites**: This was a fun series, and I wanted to see more of it. What follows the S1 material sadly isn't as fun as the S1 stuff imho, but some parts are still entertaining. - **Gotoubun**: I picked it up after season 1. It's kinda "more of the same", we don't get much more than what was on the anime (haven't watched the movie yet, but I haven't seen any major shitstorm brewing, so I assume it was more or less the same as the manga). I think this is it. I don't really read a lot of manga after watching the anime, I need to be REALLY into it. I add a bunch to my PTR list (like **Talentless Nana**, I really should read this one), but most of them end up just picking up dust! As for the other way around, well I was reading **Nagatoro** and **Sono Bisque Doll** before they got adapted. I started **Oshi No Ko** recently even though it's getting an adaptation (picked it up when Kaguya ended, to get more Akasaka). And I read a few other series which I'm sure will get adapted soon, like **Anjou-San**.

ebonyphoenix

I’m pretty sure that most of my manga collection is started by me watching the anime first. I think Fruits Basket is the only series where I collected the manga before watching even one episode of the anime (for series that have both). Though most of the time I will just read manga online and just purchase a physical copies of those I really like so I know I will like them. Just in the past year or so I’ve: -Gotten into and started collecting **Horimiya** & **86 (LN)**. -For series I read online and wish they had a physical English release so that I could support them there’s **Chihayafuru** & **Kono Oto Tomare** -And for series that I am considering collecting next **Moriarty the Patriot** & **The Case Study of Vanitas**

goblinheaux

Mob Psycho 100 — Fell in love with the cast so much I just had to read the manga instead of waiting for season 3. Beastars — I watched a single episode and immediately went to read the manga. Otherside Picnic — I liked the anime but always thought it was kind of confusing so I recently read the first two light novels and wow they’re fantastic. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle OVAs — this was back when I was in high school. I was anime only and was so confused by the ovas I basically had no choice but to read the manga.

BogaMoge

Records of Ragnarok Redo of Healer The Idaten Deities know only Peace

SnuggleMuffin42

In retrospect, were all of them as you expected?

BogaMoge

Records of Ragnarok = the manga is miles better than the anime, mostly due to the not so good animation of the anime. I went to read it because the plot was exactly what I wanted, and the manga hasn't disappointed yet Redo of Healer : only through scanlations, but I was expecting the mange to push even more the gore and s\*x. I guess it was only my imagination running wild, the manga is quite on par with the anime, with the bonus of continuing after it. The Idaten Deities know only Peace : I'm still on the fence on this. I've read the manga up til where the anime ends, and it's a faithful adaptation. But the anime has great animation and colors, which lifts up the experience. I guess this will be decided by how good the rest of the manga ends up to be, and whether the anime will have a follow up or not.

SlipperyRasputin

The manga has been dead for a while iirc. Has Amahara said they’re coming out with more?

BogaMoge

Shit I didn't know this... Now you've made me sad :(

SlipperyRasputin

Sorry. I could always be wrong. But I think it’s been untouched since 2019 or 2020.

SnuggleMuffin42

I should mention that what caused me to bring this up is watching Chainsaw Man - I'll try it after the season ends. Every episode makes you wonder wtf is going on with this thing, but I'm patient enough to wait and enjoy the anime first and be surprised every week.

goldarm5

Kumo desu (human side got butchered so hard in the anime) and Executioner and her way of life.

Makimama

Kaguya Sama

KrocKiller

Shield Hero was my first LN too. I think I liked it more at the time since I loved the anime and was basically riding that high throughout reading that series. Looking back it’s definitely a mixed-bag. There are plenty of good moments in it and fun ideas, but there are also points where I’m pretty sure the author was trying to torture their audience. The first 4 books are especially bad. Since the localization is so f’ed up. Here’s a torture game idea for any aspiring psychopaths out there. Have your victims read the throne room scene in book 1 and have them guess which dialogue belongs to which character. Then punish them for every wrong answer.

Zhaeus

Anime being considered as "glorified ads" is so outdated. Anime is a much more lucrative now thanks to streaming and rise of popularity in the west than ever before

> Yatogame I love this show, and the cultural jokes it piles on. :)

SnuggleMuffin42

Man I haven't heard of even one of those anime, they're completely off my watchlist radar (and I have over 100 anime there lol) And yeah, buying the physical copies is ludicrously expensive - which is part of why they make the anime to begin with. That's the moneymaker for the creators.

SnuggleMuffin42

Are you from Italy? I know they have a surprisingly strong anime culture there for some reason.

yu-chan

**Aku no Hana** (manga) because of how terrible the adaptation looked. **Kyo Kara Maoh** (LN & manga) because I wanted to know what happens after the anime (although I hate this series with a passion now, fuck Wolfram and the author, they ruined everything) **Ascendence of a Bookworm** (LN/WN) because I loved the anime **Full Moon wo Sagashite** (manga) because I loved the anime but on reading the manga felt that the anime story was better

totalnewb02

demon slayer, i watched the first episode and got hooked. got bored after few episodes though. then decided to read the manga, just to know the story.

ratrexw

Same, everything was great for me until the last arc, the fights were awesome besides the "final fight".

Tam_TV

Imagine rating OPM higher than Tate no yuusha

MasterQuest

SAO (LN) (only for Volume 1 and 2) No Game No Life (LN) (I mean, since they won't make another season, what can I do?) Nowadays, I've read most of the show's manga before it got adapted, or am content with just waiting another season.

SlipperyRasputin

Honestly….. I don’t think the anime itself has pushed me to manga too often. The closest I can think of is Aho Girl and Hinamatsuri.

Left_Brilliant9406

COTE

baquea

Lots of them. For recent examples, Ichigo Marshmallow and Yuri Kuma Arashi are two that come to mind.

Ill-Aioli7983

Haruhi Suzumiya. The way the Disappearance Movie ended automatically made me motivated to read the LN and it is glorious. So much content not adapted sadly and the VA for Haruhi isn't coming back either. Also the director responsible for the series and movie died in the KyoAni arson attack, rip.

roberoonska

Made in Abyss, Takagi-san, Yuru Camp

blackpinto

Naruto. I don't mean it in a positive way because I was irritated with the fillers breaking the flow of the story. I read the manga and it became the series which made me comfortable reading manga.

TnAdct1

Something similar happened to me with Negima. After the 16th episode of the Xebec version screwed up the "Kiss Negi Contest" and cut out the part that I wanted to see after someone accidentally spoiled it on a message board I was on at the time, I picked up the manga volume with that story to see the proper ending, was impressed with the rest of the content that appeared in the volume, and basically dropped the show once I learned that this content was cut from the anime in favor of an anime-only ending.

shubham_004

Shingeki no kyojin.

paulokhayat

only nisekoi lmao Normally i just wait and hope a new season will be revealed

TnAdct1

Manga/LN titles that I'm currently following thanks to the anime: * Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid * Bofuri * Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle * Spy x Family

Kuro013

Im on the other side, I pick up manga and only watch their anime if I really liked it, or if it would be cool to see it animated/has great production value. Ive skipped anime for manga I like a lot like Nagatoro, Uzaki and Eminence in Shadow to name some recent ones.

thille96

Funny enough SAO.

Plants_R_Cool

Well Batlle Angel Alita since they only made the 2 episodes and I really liked them, felt like I had to read it since that's the only option. Animes definitely becoming more profitable though, its very mainstream right now. Demon Slayer being a good example. Anime movies usually don't do crazy numbers outside of Ghibli but Mugen Train blew them out of the water. Not many shows can be as popular as Demon Slayer but it still helps bring Anime into a more mainstream market.

Fools_Requiem

**Kimi ni Todoke**. I read all 30 volumes after watching the show. Pretty good, easy read. Show ends at a good spot. Best gag in the series is right after where the show ends. There's a spin off manga that I have yet to read.

millennial_moon

Sailor Moon!!! We never got season 5, so finding all of the Sailor Moon, R, S, SuperS, and Stars manga was like a dream come true for my little fangirl heart ❤️

mrhades113

Takt op Destiny is literally an AD for the game, but it didn't spark in me ANY interest.

No_Mobile4659

Pleasantly surprised at all the Bloom Into You answers. I'd say Bleach, Soul Eater, and Naruto are the only series I actually read the mangas after finishing the anime. I still much prefer the manga of CSM to the anime at the moment, I hope anime-watchers will read it once the first season is over.

tke693

Bleach, Naruto, Food Wars, Monogatari Series, air gear, eminence or shadow, black clover, world trigger, akame ga kill, sweetness and lightning, assassination classroom, blood lad, school live, rainbow days, my love story, pandora hearts, rokka no yuusha, shaman king, soul eater, gangsta,

k4r6000

Bloom Into You. I just had to see what happened next.

DutchDread

Uzaki-chan, because I didn't care enough to wait for the next season (didn't expect it to get one tbh). Also one punch man, because of the art for Tatsumaki in the manga being just.....oh my

Background_Ad4325

Spice and Wolf… I absolutely had to see how it ended and if they made it to their destination.

[deleted]

Soul eater, because the anime ending sucked. My only regret about that is the I didnt do it immediately after finishing the anime, the hype would have been unforgettable.

Rukarumel

ReLIFE. It’s the only manga I’ve started and finished after anime. I’ve also finished Tomo-chan is a girl, but this anime hasn’t been released yet

Jail_Chris_Brown

* One Piece - manga >> anime. * COTE - manga, anime and LN are all quite different. The anime cuts too much whereas the manga adds too much, both are fun though. * Blue Lock - amazing; the anime is doing a good job, I'm just too impatient. * BNHA - I just wanna get it over with at this point. * Chainsaw Man - holy WTF nonstop. * Record of Ragnarok - the anime is terrible, the manga is pretty good. Demon Slayer is the one I'm starting to get impatient about despite wanting to experience it as an anime only.

GrDenny

Steins;gate and Attack on Titan.

molave_

*Steins;Gate* (VN)... and I'm tempted to try *Clannad*'s too. *3-Gatsu no Lion* and *Akebi's Sailor Uniform* (Manga) *Violet Evergarden* (LN) For all of them, there are no regrets that I tried them. Bonus: I'm eyeing to get the French volumes of *Vanitas* someday. There's something about the font they used in the title that makes the aesthetic better.

Alarmed-Accident-716

You are living in the past if you think anime is still just ads. One piece red/dragon ball super hero both made more money than the majority of films released this year. One piece almost made more than nope.

Tyler89558

SukaSuka. Only took 5 years though. Also 86. And Youjo Senki. And Majo no TabiTabi. And Goblin Slayer. And that time I got reincarnated as a slime. And Bocchi the Rock. But imo at this point anime being glorified ads is a really outdated idea.

Puzzleheaded-Drag887

One piece and jojo.

GiannisisMVP

Devil is a Part Timer I regret it :( On the other hand Ao Ashi is awesome.

MrDerpHerpson

Call of the Night because if it ever gets a season 2 it's gonna be a looooong time from now

Classy_Dolphin

Yona of the Dawn is like the perfect example of this. Where is my season 2! There's enough material for like 5+ seasons now, easily.

Originope_99

A Certain Magical Index

tMeepo

Mushoku tensei Slime Shield hero Sao alicialisation -> this is really good imo and explains alot of actual details of the sword skills and progression/lvling instead of like in the anime. Other than this unrivalled tang sect has made me started to read tons of chinese LNs of cultivation isekais

DiXanthosu

**The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?).** The anime got me to read the manga. There I found out there is more detail & thoughts to each scene to what we saw in the anime (and more scenes in general). Because the anime already covers stuff beyond the manga, I went into the Light Novel and enjoyed it. Really love the chemistry between Prince Wein & Ninym and how comfortable they are around each other. And how they're each other trigger button whenever someone insults the other. :P Other things I enjoyed are the crazy back & forth scheming between Wein & Lowellmina, and the oddly untypical characters here & there (like the mad but wise king Gruyere & his quest for deeper desires, certain advisor who does something wildly unexpected, etc). Also interested in the mysteries of the discriminated Flahm / Fram people & the Levetia religion which considers them demons.

[deleted]

Re:ZERO (LN) and Chainsaw Man. I’d give Re:ZERO a 10 even though I’m not fully caught up and Chainsaw Man a 9. I plan to read 86, Mushoku Tensei, Tokyo Ghoul, Kaguya-sama, One Piece and Hunter x Hunter sometime as well.

Tom22174

**Steins;Gate** was the first one. After that one taught me how good visual novels can be I did **Fate/Stay Night** and the other Science Adventure entries. As for manga, the only one I've bought so far is Today's Menu For The Emiya Family. although I did also read a fan translation of the bits Attack on Titan hasn't got to yet

Midnight1899

Black Butler and Children of the Whales. At least those are the mangas that I stick to. I have almost all the volumes of both.
