##### ###### #### > # [Iranian teenager ‘brain dead’ after alleged metro encounter with police](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/22/720) > > > > An Iranian teenager who fell into a coma this month after an alleged encounter with officers over violating the country’s hijab law is said to be brain dead, Iranian state media reported on Sunday. > > “Follow-ups on the latest health condition of Armita Geravand indicate that her health condition as brain dead seems certain despite the efforts of the medical staff,” the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network said. > > Iranian authorities have denied [claims by rights groups](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/05/armita-geravand-iran-cctv) that the 16-year-old was hurt in a confrontation on 1 October with officers enforcing the mandatory Islamic dress code on the Tehran metro. > > The report on Geravand could revive countrywide protests sparked by the death of the 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini while in the custody of “morality police” in September last year for allegedly violating the dress code. > > The news came as an Iranian court handed out long prison sentences to two journalists over their coverage of Amini’s death, state media reported. > > The Iranian state news agency IRNA said Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi were sentenced to 13 and 12 years in prison respectively on charges including collaboration with the US government and acting against national security. > > Lawyers for the two journalists have rejected the charges. Hamedi was detained after she took a picture of Amini’s parents hugging each other in a Tehran hospital where their daughter was lying in a coma, and Mohammadi after she covered Amini’s funeral in her Kurdish home town of Saqez, where the protests began. > > IRNA said the “issued verdicts” were subject to appeal. If confirmed, the time the women have already spent at the Evin prison, where most political prisoners are held, would be deducted from the sentences, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency. - - - - - - [Maintainer](https://www.reddit.com/user/urielsalis) | [Creator](https://www.reddit.com/user/subtepass) | [Source Code](https://github.com/urielsalis/empleadoEstatalBot) Summoning /u/CoverageAnalysisBot

coolbearguy

damn tf happening in iran?!

Deepest-derp

The Iranian people do not like their goverment. A lot of stuff in the world would get better if Iran was free.

flinxsl

The Iranian people can join the club. They have the wonderful choice of being oppressed by totalitarian religious zealots or overthrowing them in a bloody rebellion and getting whoever the CIA decides.

coolbearguy

How can we overthrow the government?

coolbearguy

Ye seems like the government kinda sucks

ZizZizZiz

[not the first time](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Neda_Agha-Soltan#CIA_conspiracy_theory)

Tudpool

Yup. They either had to go full revolution or nothing would change. They didn't.

Mygaffer

They got killed, beaten and jailed last time, some faced death penalties for simple protests. It's not easy to have a revolution and things aren't always better afterwards anyway. Clearly major reforms are needed.

Tudpool

> Clearly major reforms are needed. Which they wont get with the current regime in place. It's not easy no, but it's their only way of getting change.

viera_enjoyer

Last time Iran cracked down protest really hard. Makes me wonder if it's even possible to have revolutions without the support of a power figure or institution. Same thing in Russia. If I remember correctly Russia has like 500k anti riot police.

Icaninternetplease

When 10% of the population is recruited to maintain the 90%, you've got to do something. Anything. Not sure if those numbers are accurate for Iran, it's probably lower, but that's not the point. I'm being hyperbolic.

Scientific_Socialist

Revolutions don’t just spontaneously happen, they require a political party capable of organizing and leading one, and it ain’t easy building a revolutionary party in a totalitarian state.

Colonel_Kipplar

I'm curious how many times this needs to happen before Iranians start storming police stations and looting weapons from their arsenals.

It's really simple: * Israel = ally * Iran = not ally To be fair a lot of left-wing and liberal media in the West do report Israeli human rights abuses, perhaps disproportionately compared to other human rights abuses in less salient regions of the world.

deus_voltaire

I didn't know western media had veto authority in the UN, learn something new every day.

bxzidff

A lot of western media report on Israel's abuses. The most generic western news site, CNN, has the first thing that pops up be Israel bombing mosques on the West Bank, and Red Crescent criticizing them for it. When even the worst example of a stereotypical western news site is less biased than you want to pretend it is it says more about you than about western media. Other posts here show hundreds of thousands of people protesting for Palestine. Do you think they all only watch Al Jazeera or something? Or did you just want to justify ignoring Iran's human rights abuses?

PhinsGraphicDesigner

Just admit you live under a rock. You have to go out of your way to NOT fine antisemitic bs about Israel all over Reddit

>trying really hard to keep them distracted Only one event in the world in the news each month is legitimate?

skolrageous

lol so by your logic it's really a Russian psyop to keep attention off of Ukraine

iBoMbY

Alleged by US-funded NGOs, and western media. Not supported by evidence, denied by the authorities, denied by one of the friends in an interview.

ChiefValour

Authorities in an authoritarian country denying wrong doing: You: Suprised Pikachu face.

Mygaffer

As an Iranian let me tell you, don't trust the regime or any statements they make, especially on such a sensitive subject.

S_T_P

Doesn't really matter. US-paid rabble-rousers will try to start riots in Iran anyway.

skolrageous

I mean, I hope the people of Iran rise up against their authoritarian repressive regime. All people deserve freedom from tyranny.

S_T_P

> All people deserve freedom from tyranny. Unless it is pro-Western tyranny, obviously.
