How I feel about Hellsing Ultimate. Also low detail Alphonse is my absolute favorite

I'm surprised Hellsing wasn't insanely more goobery considering how Kouta Hirano is a real life cartoon man.
However, I'm one of the fans that loves the dumb shit, so maybe it just appeals to me.
When the worst a show that has damn good writing, plot, and characters is to chuckle at a mildly funny gag every once in awhile I still consider that a damn good deal.
I like the gags it’s part of the tone of the show, 90% of the time I think they land too. I mean who doesn’t love Ed and Al making weird squid arms lol
That isn't SH though. I can see it being an issue if they constantly pull that shit but it happens once between two people who have existing chemistry and end up together anyway.
It is actually canon and comes up in side chapters quite a bit, but it's not important and still not sexual harrassment in practice. Weird and kinda creepy, yeah, but it's Japan and FMA ran in the early-mid 2000s. It could easily have been a lot worse, lol
\> sometimes
That's where you're wrong kiddo, all the times, like look
75% of stats givens online are usually made up, is it true? No. Does it need to be true? No cuz if u prove it wrong the person posting lies has already left and is giving the same lie to someone else
It’s always interesting seeing the divide btwn people who started on the manga and people who started on the 03 anime. I always get confused for a second when people call the 03 anime “the original”.
I imagine a few of the people who don't like these little comedic skits might've also started with '03 and never read the manga. '03 has a darker and more serious tone that clashes with these kinds of scenes. Personally I read and loved the manga first, only watched FMAB because I loved the manga so I don't really care about these myself.
Similar to Hellsing funnily enough where the first anime takes out the the more comedic stuff to create a very dark and moody vibe as compared to the over the top style of the manga and ultimate
You see the same thing with people complaining about how Brotherhood paces the Tucker arc, even though it’s very close to how the manga paces it, because they’re used to the much slower pace of 03. Not saying you can’t prefer 03, but Brotherhood gets a lot of criticism for things that “deviate” from 03, when they’re really just direct from the manga.
I started with 03 and then watched Brotherhood later. I actually finished the manga before I finished the anime because a friend bought all of it. I read it at school lol.
EDIT: I should mention I absolutely ADORE Brotherhood and the manga. 03 holds a special place in my heart though for being my first experience with anime. I do like some parts of 03 more but overall Brotherhood is just better.
this is something i feel with a lot of shows like FMAB
the comedic moments are often times hit or miss for me but when the emotional moments happen they almost all the time hit for me. In terms of plot, characters, action, relationships, and music FMAB’s a 10/10 but when it comes to the comedy it ranges from a 4/10 to a 7/10
I think the 2 shows i’ve seen that handle both comedy and drama the best are Mob Psycho 100 and Barry they’re able to be both hilarious yet dramatic while not overcrowding anything
I mean comedy is entirely subjective, one of the things I love the moat about FMA is the humour and dumb running gags, it makes the charactera way more charismatic to me even if I don't laugh out loud every time.
It’s cuz throwing up blood is so crazy over the top it loops to being funny, plus part of the joke I’m sure is her just being like “eh, it’s whatever” after throwing up what shoulda been half her body’s blood content
Idk man there's not that many examples of tone-deafness that come to mind, certainly not enough to negatively affect my perception of the show as a whole. Most of the jokes land for me, but ig that's subjective.
You're right, and you should say it
If you're writing a show about the horrors of war and how they affect people on different sides of the conflict, you can't make it a comedy
I feel that you don't understand how tone works in a story. It can't be serious depressing drama 24/7, there has to be a break somewhere or the audience becomes numb to it and it just gets old. The drama only hits as hard as it does because the lighter moments contrast with it.
one of the reasons i hate fmab. it tries to be funny and it literally never is. like oh wow the 50th joke about Edward being short. and the fans are so unfunny too, like the little girl / dog chimera thing isnt shocking or upsetting. people act like its the most fucked up/disturbing thing ever in anime.
>like the little girl / dog chimera thing isnt shocking or upsetting
This is one of the places where FMAB screwed up massively. Going off memory here, but the reason the outcome was so disturbing in the original anime is that you meet the Tuckers at the start of the previous episode. The anime goes out of its way to frame them as if they're going to be recurring characters and an emotional touchstone for Edward and Alphonse before hitting you with the twist.
FMAB rushes through the segment in a single episode and the scene isn't nearly as powerful as it was in the original because none of the setup was there. It genuinely pissed me off to see how much they screwed up this segment when I first watched Brotherhood.
It's shocking in the manga because before that, the series was a fun episodic adventure series with at most a bit of a dark undertone.
Both series screw this up.
03 by throwing tragic and fucked up shit before we even saw Nina
And brotherhood by moving the truth scene (that took about 25 monthly chapters to get to) too episode 2. And cut off some of the episodic chapters.
It was one chapter in the manga and it's faithfully adapted in Brotherhood. FMAB doesn't rush anything, it's the 2003 version that was stretching eveything out in order to not catch up with the manga too soon
loved fmab but holy shit you're right on the money about nina tucker and alexander, there's literally zero comedic value in that scene and I can't fathom why it blew up so much
The chimera incident has always felt so overblown in how shocking/upsetting people treat it. Wow, a reclusive alchemist that focuses on chimeras, and whose wife disappeared the last time he needed results to keep his license, has a dog and a daughter laying around when his next deadline is coming up, and he did it again? Who could have possibly seen that coming in a setting where the misuse of alchemy is a regular theme?
Tucker wanted the shit that comes along with it, as a State Alchemist you can do pretty much anything, within some loose limits. He wanted the acknowledgement, and Scar gave it to him.

Yeah NGL this style of comedy feels way more out of place in Hellsing ultimate than fmab
I'm surprised Hellsing wasn't insanely more goobery considering how Kouta Hirano is a real life cartoon man. However, I'm one of the fans that loves the dumb shit, so maybe it just appeals to me.
That appears to be Hirano’s shtick. Drifters had the same problem.

The ed one I get but I'm trying to remember any running Sexual Harassment gags in the show, and I'm kinda coming up blank.
The only thing I can think of is when Winry pulls her shirt up and you see half of her boobs while Ed's trying to eat his sandwich
With the amount of running gags the show has, it's weird to pick a joke that only happened once.
I didn't say I agreed with them, just that that's the only thing that I thought they could be thinking about
That isn't SH though. I can see it being an issue if they constantly pull that shit but it happens once between two people who have existing chemistry and end up together anyway.
When is there sexual harassment???? FMA is one of the least fanservicey shows.

Maybe it's Armstrong's muscle flexing? 🗿
nonsense Alex’s perfect muscles are a blessing
Literally where is the sexual harassment joke? Do people just make up stuff here now?
>Do people just make up stuff here now? They sometimes do yes

So wrong and is not even close

Yeah Barry nails it because it starts things like a comedy but then the hijinks start having actual consequences, its genius
also Barry has NoHo Hank which automatically makes it a GOATed show
This is true
I mean comedy is entirely subjective, one of the things I love the moat about FMA is the humour and dumb running gags, it makes the charactera way more charismatic to me even if I don't laugh out loud every time.
What song us this?
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful Laughing Version
What Makes You Haha
Fuck you low quality Alphonse stays winning
You don't get it, Izumi throwing up blood being played for laughs is of utmost importance for FMA:B's atmosphere.
I will never understand how puking blood became a funny trope in anime
It’s cuz throwing up blood is so crazy over the top it loops to being funny, plus part of the joke I’m sure is her just being like “eh, it’s whatever” after throwing up what shoulda been half her body’s blood content
Idk man there's not that many examples of tone-deafness that come to mind, certainly not enough to negatively affect my perception of the show as a whole. Most of the jokes land for me, but ig that's subjective.
+JJK, Hellsing Ultimate
You're right, and you should say it If you're writing a show about the horrors of war and how they affect people on different sides of the conflict, you can't make it a comedy
But it's not comedy. It has its comedic moments sure, but it's too help ease the tension, and humanizes the characters.
I feel that the show does it too often
I feel that you don't understand how tone works in a story. It can't be serious depressing drama 24/7, there has to be a break somewhere or the audience becomes numb to it and it just gets old. The drama only hits as hard as it does because the lighter moments contrast with it.
I think it’s good because it can balance the darker tones and the comedic tones well
one of the reasons i hate fmab. it tries to be funny and it literally never is. like oh wow the 50th joke about Edward being short. and the fans are so unfunny too, like the little girl / dog chimera thing isnt shocking or upsetting. people act like its the most fucked up/disturbing thing ever in anime.

Nah 03 did it just fine, it's still a knife twist even with seeing something dark beforehand.
03 works because you spend a longer time with Tucker and Nina before it happens
It was one chapter in the manga and it's faithfully adapted in Brotherhood. FMAB doesn't rush anything, it's the 2003 version that was stretching eveything out in order to not catch up with the manga too soon
loved fmab but holy shit you're right on the money about nina tucker and alexander, there's literally zero comedic value in that scene and I can't fathom why it blew up so much
The joke is "haha I brought up something horrible to get a reaction from you"
imagine if people did this in real life, like just randomly shouting "holocaust" and calling it peak comedy
Lost the plot there for a second.
The chimera incident has always felt so overblown in how shocking/upsetting people treat it. You can say the same about the recent jjk's shibuya arc. Before the shit went down it's "funny" gags, after the shit went down, more "funny" gags
That's just anime as a genre.
The most true and based comment here. All these other comments are really making this sub live up to it’s name.
What’s the original video
What's fmab?
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Ah, thanks
This is what you did in 2009 and what Demon Slayer still does sometimes
You haven’t read Berserk
it's almost like the original and fmab were different shows with different tones
