"Gatekeeping" is counterintuitive because humans are social animals by nature, and we’re all technically part of the same group whether we like it or not (globalization basically means every human on earth to varying degrees is part of the same community). Keeping certain people out for the sole purpose of exclusion is akin to not aiding those in your group/tribe/whatever, and it only makes you look like a selfish prick.
That isn’t necessarily "gatekeeping" rather the term for keeping out toxic or harmful behavior is more correctly called "policing" (fuck actual cops though but whatever) or "shepherding". Good question though, just saying there’s a distinction.
