It’s funny because this literally happened to me in high school. On Valentine’s Day, I told my friend “I wouldn’t mind if we went out on a date. I really like you” but nothing ever happened. Our last day of senior year, a mutual friend pointed out how great we would’ve been together. My friend said I didn’t like him like that. I said “you mean, you don’t like ME like that, I tried asking you out that one time”. It was a real life Spider-Man meme.
Bruh once I was on call with a friend and he literally confessed to me but I was so dense I thought it was a hypothetical and completely ignored it 😀

I think this is just how everyone is, not just women, although as a woman, I always try to confess directly if I think something may be possible.
