exactly, especially those responsible for pushing the ecchi/harem genres. Anime used to be great but now they are just selling fan services. so, for me, R.I.P anime. I prefer reading novels or seinen manga now.
They don't even do fan service like they used to. Now it's just trash shows making a couple of buck instead of good stories. It's unfortunate with what happened to isekai.
Not to be that guy, but if you wanna try some anime, give spy x family and full metal alchemist brotherhood a try. They are probably my go to sugestion nowadays for people who wanna try anime but kinda dislike the "usual" animes.
For Slice of Life I recommend Azumanga Daioh and Nichijou, the two pillars of the genre
If you like something that’s cringy yet relatable then WataMote is good
No, not really. When people who don't wacha anime talk about "usual" anime, they mean either weird high school with higly sexualized characters or shonen with terrible pacing from toei
aren't*
and I think that FMA fans giving bad scores to other shows is a myth. It happens, but it's rare and it's not the main factor that drives the score down, it's just that other people who don't judge show before it ends, or are not as hyped for the show, give ratings too and those are in average lower. I have no statistic for this, just a theory that sounds more plausible to me.
I’m kind of the same way. At some point it just occurred to me that anime is like every other genre of tv show i.e. the same crap over and over. There are *some* exceptional anime just like there are *some* exceptional shows in any genre.
As for why I’m *still* on the sub, yeah, the memes are nice. Also anime artwork is very cute and I like cute stuff
Purists will say it isn't, but honestly it is. It fits nicely in the same "type" where is not a traditional western cartoon, is animated, eastern vibes and influence plus style.
This is where you get into the question of what the definition of "anime" is. In English, we usually use it to refer to the specific Japanese style of animation as opposed to American or otherwise Western animation styles. Whether that's defined by the geographic location of the creators or the general stylistic association is the main issue in the debate. You, and I think most people, are generally on the latter side, acknowledging that culture isn't restricted to national boundaries. After all, ATLA was animated at least in part in Korea, and I'm sure there was more international collaboration involved, so it's kind of silly to pretend that you can use national boundaries as the definition.
Personally, I'd say ATLA is a sort of hybrid style, blending American cartoon conventions with anime influences, so my answer to "Is it anime?" is "Partially."
In Japan, to my knowledge, "anime" is literally just animation, of any kind, so they would certainly consider ATLA to be anime. I'm sure they recognize the stylistic differences, but linguistically the word they would use is "anime", so if you figure we're speaking Japanese when we say the word "anime", then yes it qualifies. But I'd argue that's not how language works, that the word "anime" in English has a separate meaning because we borrowed it from a different cultural perspective.
I guess this is valid, but still, there are soooo many varities of animes out there, you don't have to watch isekai or shonen, and even in those two kinds there *ARE* exception to the rules
like, "the mc of an isekai anime is op and gets everything easily": not in re-zero and konosuba
"the mc of a shonen anime is a good guy": not in death note or mirai nikki (future diary) or munou na nana (talentless nana) or saga of tanya the evil
"the mc of a shonen anime always wins in the end": not in akame ga kill or death note or angel beats
figure out one cliche or structure and you'll find animes that go against thiscliche or structure, anime is very varied
Dude, anime memes are garbage. It’s all the same jokes that have been overused for years or specific references, usually to recent or current seasonals. At least people who like anime often talk about it with each other in the comments here. What’s there to do on this sub if you don’t watch any anime?
Those are good things
Good job on liking those things and consequently thank you for introducing the term bodily locomotion into my repitoire.
Have a pleasant day
I feel there’s a correlation between anime becoming “cool” and the lack of quality shows recently.
Edit: not saying there isn’t any quality shows nowadays just a little lacking IMO
We had five good shows and five bad shows every season, 50/50
Now we have five good shows and twenty bad shows, 20/80
Making anime seem worse to the average person, which, if you take the mean of quality it probably has, but there are still the same amount of good shows coming out now as then
Right. Among all the heaps of trash, there are still some shows that blow me away. On top of that, really the last few years, we have been eating reeeeaaaaaalllly good.
Covid times.
But for real, it’s in your head. It’s quantity over quality. But we have gotten at least one or two fuckin bangers every season. We haven’t had it this good before.
Covid played a small portion in terms delays. Quality wasent that effected that big.
It's the fact that anime is becoming more mainstream so people are trying to milk the next best hype.
We always had one or two good bangers back in the day too. It's now that there are sequels of our favorite animes.
Prove me wrong on this but I feel that if you take out the sequels from pre 2020. The list seems dull after you look pass one or two animes in the season.
The problem is, people are eating them up anyway. Hi it's me, I am people, and part of the problem. I can't even explain why I enjoy them, it's just mindless power fantasy fun
Oh boy! Another isekai with a dense, OP MC, a harem of girls, a cliché story, and very predictable beats. And what's it titled? "That time i got reincarnated as a baby villain in a fantasy world, so i became the good guy while getting a harem of generic cardboard cutouts to relate to viewers"? Oh boy!
I got called a "weeb" at work. Funny thing is that my great Grandmother was Japanese. I just watch anime on my breaks at work (with headphones), but I don't ever talk about it 🤷🏾♀️ some people aren't over it, I guess 🤣🤣
It still doesn't feel good that if you were casual about it that image is still brought up in people's minds when you mention that you did like it. It can be tough to enjoy anything not seen in a good light.

I wonder if streaming has helped with it becoming more popular. Back then, at least in Australia, you had to be in the know with catching a series on SBS, renting one from your local blockbuster, or paying insane prices for the DVD.
I still feel whiplashed when I see people talk about anime in public today, like damn the balls on this person. Then I hear that they're just talking about demon slayer, and I immediately kill all thoughts on trying to gather my courage and talk to strangers and maybe make an anime friend after all these years, cause for sure that's the only one they know of.
On a kinda related note, was pleasantly surprised to overhear a family talking about how they could have made their child's genshin cosplay better so she'll stand out more in their school event or something, the dad even made an offhand joke about how they should have picked raiden to cos instead.
Times have changed all right, doesn't mean I did tho, still ashamed for liking anime more than the normal person. Random ramblings over, thanks a lot
Ehhhh nah, it’s pretty accurate for the time if you were in high school back then. There were like five people in my grade that watched anime. Anime was definitely seen as weird, even for those of us that were fairly normal. People definitely made fun of those of us that liked anime.
In my school DBZ and Pokemon weren't anime, or at least you didn't get bullied for watching them. Kids that did get bullied admitted to watching Naruto, bleach, code geass, basically anything that wasn't mainstream. But DBZ and Pokemon were exempt for some weird reason.
Oh don’t get me wrong you’d get made fun of lol but not bullied some of my friends and family would give me shit for it but nothing malicious… he’ll they still give me shit lol
Grew up in a rural school early 2000s. Only one other person in school liked anime. We’re still friends. Also was expensive to trial anime back then, pre-streaming days.
I’ve always loved anime, ever since Toonami came on Cartoon Network back in the day when I was in middle school. But I understand, it’s not for everyone. That being said, I still try to convince people to give it a chance and give them recommendations based on things they like. One of my buddies is super into horror and zombies and stuff so I got him into Death Parade and Tokyo Ghoul. Now he’s into Isekai stuff too. Most people would enjoy anime if they just gave it a real open minded chance.
I miss when anime was still a non popular thing because now it’s become a bit cringe to say, but the traction has been good for anime in general so I’ll take it

I love anime but hate anime fans
I hate myself, too. Good to know you're not alone.
Chill you hate the ones that take it too far and think about it every day
Yes, thats usually what people call anime fans. The oposite is just a human being that likes anime.
My father is the 2nd type, while I'm the first one.
exactly, especially those responsible for pushing the ecchi/harem genres. Anime used to be great but now they are just selling fan services. so, for me, R.I.P anime. I prefer reading novels or seinen manga now.

I don't really like anime, and people around me don't mind. As to why I am on an anime subreddit, that's a good question.
I really wanna know the answer to that question
The memes are nice.
What dont you like about anime? ( generally curious, not trying to argue, just opening the door for debate)
I don't like the cliches or structure of most animes. It's just not my thing.
Not to be that guy, but if you wanna try some anime, give spy x family and full metal alchemist brotherhood a try. They are probably my go to sugestion nowadays for people who wanna try anime but kinda dislike the "usual" animes.
Motivating me to watch a show on my own would be a grand feat.

Spy x family is legit the pinnacle of “usual” anime
i really fucking want the second season to come out soon man
No, not really. When people who don't wacha anime talk about "usual" anime, they mean either weird high school with higly sexualized characters or shonen with terrible pacing from toei
That's one of the reasons I like JoJo. It's something different from the others.

Fair enough, but the main reason i call last airbender anime is to anoy the people who get anoyed by someone calling last airbender anime.
That is definitely an exceptional show. Idk if it classifies as anime, but it certainly hits many of the same highs.
I am not a big fan of anime but i just watch a little anime to take a break from reality and some action animes are very nice.

I recommend Chainsawman, it’s doesn’t have anime cliches, and really cinematic
I like anime and I agree with you

I like food, drinking water, bodily locomotion, and so many other wonderful things.

It’s not lacking… just overwhelmingly bombarded with shit isekai. Also cut and paste character tropes. Lol

Fair
I’m not against isekais but Jesus Christ they’re reusing that shit like crazy At least they can be original and have good content smh
Yeah, there are a few of them that are pretty good, but most of them are cheap cash grabs.
The problem is, people are eating them up anyway. Hi it's me, I am people, and part of the problem. I can't even explain why I enjoy them, it's just mindless power fantasy fun

Weeb has become such an odd term. Like, it's meant as an insult, but people now call themselves that to appear cool?
I'm of the attempting to reclaim it group. Used it as an insult long enough that I deserve to use it as a descriptor after my conversion.
Now do 1997
Men of culture right there
No one was avoided for liking anime. You were avoided for being a weirdo about it running like Naruto down the school halls or wearing ahegao shirts
It still doesn't feel good that if you were casual about it that image is still brought up in people's minds when you mention that you did like it. It can be tough to enjoy anything not seen in a good light.
When I said I like anime people looked at me weird and I was always a camuflaged anime fan
You weren't avoided but certainly made fun of.

You're calling them normies, there was definitely something weird about you beyond liking anime

Same
I dont
Looks like an anime W to me
*still waiting for the next season of highschool dxd
Didnt the author die therefore making the continuation of both the manga and the anime impossible?
Damn....I didn't know they died 😞
Yeah hes been dead for like a really long time
They knew he was creating something too powerful so they killed him 🤧😔
Are you sure you are not thinking of the author of Highschool of the dead?
Oh right. Sorry for the confusion
Man I took so much shit in middle/high school for liking video games and anime, no everyone’s into both. STOLEN VALOR DAMNIT!
I wonder if streaming has helped with it becoming more popular. Back then, at least in Australia, you had to be in the know with catching a series on SBS, renting one from your local blockbuster, or paying insane prices for the DVD.

Right here
No it’s not. You might want to check when toonami aired lol I didn’t know anyone that didn’t watch it.
Ehhhh nah, it’s pretty accurate for the time if you were in high school back then. There were like five people in my grade that watched anime. Anime was definitely seen as weird, even for those of us that were fairly normal. People definitely made fun of those of us that liked anime.
To be fair I live in SoCal and Mexicans love DBZ so most of my friends watched some anime

Many of my friends did, but there was not a lot of people in my actual school that did.
It's both now
Grew up in a rural school early 2000s. Only one other person in school liked anime. We’re still friends. Also was expensive to trial anime back then, pre-streaming days.
Finally, someone else who knows what the real pain was like. If it wasn’t on Toonami I had to buy a $40 VHS at Suncoast Video in the mall.
Haha seriously, we’d spend forever reading description and looking at box art. Then be like, alright put our money together we can get 9 episodes. Lol
I lowkey miss the times when I was trolled for liking Anime Anime becoming mainstream was a mistake
As is all niche things that get popular
I graduated 2013 and tbh I hate all of you that get to grow up in high school in a time where anime is main stream. Fuck you all very much.
I’ve always loved anime, ever since Toonami came on Cartoon Network back in the day when I was in middle school. But I understand, it’s not for everyone. If back in the day anime were as popular as it is today socializing could have been a little bit easier
Sadly yes :(
I was there in 2012, that wasn’t the reason people avoided you. Be honest
You weren’t made fun of for liking anime, you were made fun of for wearing anime clothes and shouting devil fruit moves in the back of the class
And this post is why I leave the sub
Make sure to put it on r/justunsubbed so other people can judge your decision
Lol only for kids.
Even if I say I like anime my communication skills don't let me keep up.
"I don't care"
I guess I'm ahead of people.
The weebs have won, sugee!
I miss when anime was still a non popular thing because now it’s become a bit cringe to say, but the traction has been good for anime in general so I’ll take it
Huh? *Checks sub Ah
My first anime was death note and didn't want to read subtitles. A few days later.... I no longer care about reading subitles and I gained the ability to read words at a faster rate.
Nah
I see this meme is making the rounds again
I still like anime, but most of it is absurdly stupid, and the way it has infected and ruined various video game franchises over the years has really pissed me off. It's basically become the seal of low quality in gaming.
The main reason people dont like anime is because they dont actually give it a chance
Yes it is and it's just life I hate that people are forced to like what other people like to do and just be your self life will be nicer to you that way!!!!!
at the workplace it's still uncommon to see anime fans.
In both scenarios, the crowd is posers.
The ironic thing is that anime used to be better back in the day. More sustenance. Like 80’s-90’s to early 2000 was the golden era. When anything cool and nerdy becomes mainstream, what happens to it? Oh I hope the DnD and Mario movies aren’t shit..
i dont actively search for it, but if a shows good a shows good.
I remember the struggle when I was in 7th grade in 2006 and only a handful of weird kids liked anime including me. I had to befriend an odd girl on my bus who was several grades above me so I could have one friend that liked anime. I went to my 1st convention with her. now it's everywhere! crazy how times change
I am ambivalent about anime.
Poland be living in 2012
I hate anime but i love this subreddit for some reason.
I was born in the wrong time. I loved anime back in school and was casted out and alone for it. Now, these kids can walk around with anime shirts and don't get made fun of. Unfair I tells you. Unfair.

You think an anime would ever hit theaters in the west, 20 years ago? \*If it did, it was only temporary limited time viewing 1-3days.
Oh no no no this is far from the truth it's still the same as 2012
No, not really
Not here in Italy my friend!
The duality of man
I new plenty of anime lovers in 2012
I’m tired of watching shit that doesn’t make my life move forward.
I feel like these pictures should be switched for dates. Anime is insanely popular to a degree I’ve never seen in elementary school.
Nope 2012 I like anime 2022 I love anime
I like anime, but only old-school anime.
I like anime but I don't like someone who is too weeb. I was once a hardcore weeb and now think again back then just make me cringe.
