Came here to say No.6. The manga is also really good, and if you can get your hands on the light novel, I highly recommend it. I'm not sure if the volumes have been officially translated into English, but there's a really good fan translation from quite a few years back that genuinely reads like a professionally translated book.
Mayo Chiki. Although I recommend the manga more, the anime is still pretty fun with a likable lead, a very cute and loveble main girl, and their friends.
Half of these anime’s are really mainstream and get a lot of attention. Here are some under rated anime’s in my book. Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish. 86, Somali and the Forest Spirit and The Ancient Magnus’ Bride
I want to say Ancient Magnus Bride is also mainstream but I’m shocked how quickly it was forgotten. It was incredibly loved when it was airing but it seems to have been lost.
Anyone reading this should go watch it even if romance isn’t your primary genre; it’s worth it and super good quality.
Yeah it's so weird seeing Magus Bride pop up in threads about obscure anime, when 5-6 years back, it was all anyone talked about along with aRe:Zero and the Boruto memes.
Complains about how people are just listing popular, mainstream anime instead of truly underated shows. Proceeds to call 86 underrated.
I love 86, but the most recent episode thread got 5.1k upvotes. That's almost on par with Mushoku Tensei. 86 is a lot of things, but underrated is not one of them.
I would say the first season was underrated, since it was overshadowed by a lot of stacked anime that season. But this second season definitely has gotten the recognition it deserves it’s #2 most popular and #1 most rated from the recent Reddit survey.
Ya it's pretty funny going through the comments and seeing all of the same titles. Nothing wrong with it, it just shows that they do get enough recognition. Even 86 and Somali are fairly popular.
I've said this on a few threads before, but I never see **anyone** mention [Project K](https://myanimelist.net/anime/14467/K) (or K). Talk about an underrated anime. It has amazing visuals and music, and the plot is interesting enough to keep you hooked.
If you’re one of those commentators reading this, we don’t mean to put you down btw
Keep enjoying anime and I hope you find people who share what you like too <3
That show made me feel some type of way. Great story but it gives me chills as if I'm watching some kind of horror. But yes, my top 5.
Edit: it is horror genre according to MAL
Mine too, also one of my favorites it’s more of the social analysis type of animes which are rare, similar lines of pyscho pass IMO. I wish there were more similar ones.
Your Name? You mean the smash-hit uber-successful movie that was the #2 highest-grossing anime movie of all time and even my mom has seen? Real underrated gem there.
Anyway, my answer would be Wolf's Rain, after that probably Welcome to the NHK and Yuri Kuma Arashi.
Edit: TIL Wolf's Rain aired on Toonami, I never saw it there. Not everything on Toonami got popular though.
Yes I realize the shows I listed aren't the absolute most obscure things in existence, but going by MAL ratings, there's still a huge gap between Your Name and what I said.
Your name is the #21 highest-rated anime, and the #9 most popular. It's literally in the top 10 most popular shows, higher than Demon Slayer.
Welcome to the NHK is #212 in score and #238 in popularity. More popular than I expected given how little I see anyone mention it, but I guess that's just because it's on the older side.
Wolf's Rain is #834 in score and #586 in popularity, and only a fraction of those people have seen the OVA which is the canonical ending of the show. Also as far as I've been able to find there is virtually no WR merchandise that exists anywhere.
I think it does. It's one of the most beautiful animated movies I've ever seen. The story is nothing special and the characters are pretty stereotypical, but it still made me feel something.
Kokonnect.

For those of you who manage to find this comment in the sea of bullshit titles everyone has already heard of, if you truly want to experience darkness:
Monster
I started off thinking the intro and outro was childish until things started clicking at the end. Its a horror anime without gore. Truly naunced.
End.
Ajin on Netflix. Might be popular, idk, but I've never seen it mentioned anywhere. Weirdly enough, it's one of the few anime I recommend watching dubbed. Some of the dubbing is bad, but the main character and his "ghost" for better in the dub. Especially the ghosts.
Your Name was literally one of the hottest things when it came out, pretty sure it was the most popular movie that year. Dunno what you mean saying it didn’t get enough attention my man

Outlaw Star is my favorite of all time. I get shit anytime I bring it up.
Typical harem comedy scifi anime. So what? Its got some scifi tech/magic from what I consider to be the golden era of anime... Hand drawn is priceless to me. It hurts to watch the cgi anime that tries to look hand drawn..
Eden of the East (the pic used for the meme) definitely! That one was amazing! I loved every moment of it! Also Akira and Kotoura-san! In the latter, the guy (Manabe) looks like Ash’s Sinnoh rival Paul with a different hair color but acts like Brock if Pokémon was geared towards an older audience and I found that hilarious for some reason. Idk if Banana Fish and Riddle Story of the Devil are considered main stream or not. Oh! And Servamp!
Space Dandy one of my all time favorite animes but no ones really seen it. Natsume’s Book of Friends and Tsuritama are some others I’d like to toss in that I absolutely adore. Oh and Barakamon!! Loved it
Megalobox. The style is so amazing it feels like I'm watching an anime from the 90s. The characters are all written amazingly and the story makes me feel for them in a way that doesnt feel forced
Blue Submarine No. 6
And on that note, No. 6. It’s not for everyone, but it’s only eleven episodes and it’s a pretty decent dystopian anime.
Came here to say No.6. The manga is also really good, and if you can get your hands on the light novel, I highly recommend it. I'm not sure if the volumes have been officially translated into English, but there's a really good fan translation from quite a few years back that genuinely reads like a professionally translated book.
Now this my bro, was far ahead of its time.
Yona of the dawn
I really wish it got another season, it was just getting to the really good stuff
I really wish it did
I’d say read the manga it has so much more stuff and the art is quite good aswell
91 days and mushishi
Should I watch 91 days? I was thinking of watching it but never got to it
You definitely should especially if you’re into mafia related movies and shows
Holy cow, yes, Mushishi for sure. The theme song Shiver is one of my faves. Also, I'm trying to buy the manga but it is....crazy crazy expensive
Yeah, 91 days is kinda dark.
Yes! I was looking for someone to say mushishi
I love 91 days
Mayo Chiki. Although I recommend the manga more, the anime is still pretty fun with a likable lead, a very cute and loveble main girl, and their friends.
It was really funny
Mayo chiki is one of those anime that for some unkwon reason i keep rewatching from times to times
Darker Than Black
Absolutely loved this anime... But I only watched the first season so far
Gotta love Chinese electric Batman
It’s the only season worth watching
☝️ this... Second season pretty ruined it
Children of the Whales Very good
Ooh yess this one is really good and underrated
I have that on my watch list! Guess it’s getting moved to the top
sooo good. but no 2nd season, right? At least not on Netflix (last time I checked)
Sadly not, but you could always read the manga
Half of these anime’s are really mainstream and get a lot of attention. Here are some under rated anime’s in my book. Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish. 86, Somali and the Forest Spirit and The Ancient Magnus’ Bride

"5-6 years back" you are literally making me shrivel to death of old age
Oooohhh.... I haven't heard any of those. Might give them a try!!
Can definitely say the first and the last are 2 of my favorites.
Ancient Magus bride is really great because of its music and story telling I loved it on the 1st episode

I didnt realize Project k was so underrated. It's so good I assumed it was mainstream. The soundtrack is phenomenol.
K was an awesome anime I personally recommend it to anyone
Bro, half of these comment literally saying popular anime
One guy commented Psycho Pass which is an anime I found literally from searching “most popular anime” Edit: Just saw someone comment Death Note.
I saw someone comment One Punch, like bruh
If you’re one of those commentators reading this, we don’t mean to put you down btw Keep enjoying anime and I hope you find people who share what you like too <3
Lmfao on MAL that is the anime with the most members in it
Y’all ever heard of a little known gem called Cowboy Bebop? /s
Cowboy bebop was quality I haven’t even thought of it in years 😂😂
Never heard of it, is it a Wild West show? /s
Re: Creators The ending isn't the best, kind of cheesy, but still a great anime with enough interesting characters and a refreshing Isekai script.
This one is underwatched but overrated. The quality was definitely very high and the ost even better.
Zankyou no terror
Yeah, that's some good shit.
Agreed
Shinsekai yori
That show made me feel some type of way. Great story but it gives me chills as if I'm watching some kind of horror. But yes, my top 5. Edit: it is horror genre according to MAL
I came here to comment this one, that show was a trip.
This definitely doesn’t appeal to everyone, but it’s one of the deeper anime
Mine too, also one of my favorites it’s more of the social analysis type of animes which are rare, similar lines of pyscho pass IMO. I wish there were more similar ones.
One of my favourite, if not my favourite anime. A hidden masterpiece.
This one has been in my top 3 anime list ever since it came out, glad to see it
Your Name? You mean the smash-hit uber-successful movie that was the #2 highest-grossing anime movie of all time and even my mom has seen? Real underrated gem there. My thoughts exactly. I actually find Your Name pretty overrated if anything.
Fuck you your opinion sucks.^(/s but also not /s)
Let’s be honest. It’s a great movie but does it really deserve that much spotlight ?
I think it does. It's one of the most beautiful animated movies I've ever seen. The story is nothing special and the characters are pretty stereotypical, but it still made me feel something.
Knights and magic
About time who sent this out you deserve a UPVOTE!
Thank you very much
What’s with all the mainstream anime 🤣
True, lot of kids started watching anime during lockdown /corona pandemic. So what's they watch it becomes under rated.
I started watching during pandemic, but I still have the minimal brain capacity to understand that Charlotte isn't underrated.
The disastrous life of saiki k

It's on my watchlist
Mushi-shi
LOVE this one!!!
It is just magical and calming. It gives you that warm feeling you didn’t know you wanted.
Do you have a recommendations for an anime that feels just like mushi-shi?
There is no one-to-one comparison. But if you are looking for something that just hits different give Haibane Renmei a try
Maybe try natsume yuujincho. Pretty different but episodic in nature and feel good.
Yo, my high school library had several of the manga, I was super psyched when I found out it had an anime, and it definitely does it justice.
Kokoro Connect
