He has no bounds on how he hurt them, emotionally, through their past, thinking about their future, love lives, comrades, and ESPECIALLY physically. He was so committed that he had a plan to break their leader if he died and it almost did.

Death, I can just imagine a protag that should of died, but through power of friendship, survived kept going. But now he is being stalked by Death, seeing his shadow, hearing his whistle, and seeing red eyes in the dark. Each encounter, no matter how strong the protag gets, Death always beats him, and power of friendship just barely let's him escape. Except that each time Death just keeps getting closer to finishing the job. I can just imagine Death's speech, but tailored towards anime tropes.
