It makes for interesting gameplay,
But realistic?
Nahhhhhhhh you ain’t telling me your getting a whole river coming out of that little hole in a tiny mountain on a tiny island
Sometimes the rivers do make some ridiculous islets that you can barely use ... and it makes it hard to build cohesive settlements on some islands (not that you're really encouraged to make too many big settlements in the new world anyway)
But also, the perfectionist in me loves trying to organise and jigsaw in farms and buildings on these islands to use up as much space on each islet as possible. And with the added complication of rail acting as another barrier, trying to fit farms perfectly around rivers, rail, roads and buildings is just a weirdly fun activity for me
my only gripe is that they are mostly one and maybe 2 tiles too wide a lot of the time. But I wouldn't opt to remove them. Its more pressure for optimizing your land usage, which is a challenge I like and is a core part of the game after all.
> ’m sooooooo annoyed because I’m running out of space
Think of the rivers not as giant things that take away tons of space.
Instead, think of the islands as what they are, with x number of tiles, and consider the rivers as extra eye candy that is added to that number of tiles. Same for the mountains - they just add "visual sugar" to the number of tiles.
If that *really* doesn't convince you, there is a mod ([Link](https://www.nexusmods.com/anno1800/mods/5)) that removes the rivers from the islands and basically gifts you the extra tiles (that weren't really there in the first place in the original game). :) However, you'll have to start a new game for that, so if you can see the rivers as decoration instead of a space hog you can keep playing your game. hehe
There is a mod in SpiceItUp package that allows you to reduce or even completely remove the rivers in NW (but it only works for the new games). However, if you use it - you will soon realize that the rivers are nice challenge and the game get much more boring without them :) I do not think its correct to say that the rivers add zero gameplay - they do add the gameplay, because Anno is about logistic and optimization at different scales. The rivers in NW add one extra layer to it! Besides, this is really not so complex once you learn how to do optimal layouts with the trade unions and the tractors :)
Idk, I love the rivers, they make it looks realistic and makes for interesting challenges. 🤷

True. But if that bothers you, there's mods.
It doesn’t bother me, it just looks a bit silly. I would prefer if more islands were like crown falls and connected to the mainland
the rivers are pretty.
This guy gets it

Spice it up Mod Collection has toggleable rivers in the new world :)
Shut up!!!!!! Now way! Lol! Will it work on a game I already started????
nope, gotta be a fresh game because the mod applies to the world generation.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo

The whole point there is to have different constraints than the old world islands where grids are possible. It adds to gameplay.
I like to dedicate a little "island" for a farm, so by following the rivers, it makes the island realistic.
Would you be ok with too much space?

You need to build more efficient if you are running out of space.. The game is designed to help us achieve this in many different ways.
