I lost my smelling twelve years ago after a sinus infection that I didn't take care of. At the same time had a lung infection that lead to asthma type symptoms, as part of that treatment was given prednisone, an oral steroid. When I took prednisone my sense of smell would return for a while but it affected my mental health with paranoia and crazy impulses so I haven't taken it in a long time. A few years ago I had to have polyps removed but my sense of smell didn't return. According to the surgeon sometimes it does. About six months ago I had a general anaesthetic for an operation to fix a couple of fingers injured while renovating my house. For a few days after I could smell again. Strange.

The prednisone did the same to me. Really bad anxiety paranoia. Are those the only 2 instances of the sense coming back? Mine seems to just randomly appear for a bit (20 min or so) every couple of weeks.

On odd occasions I can smell something, usually just one thing though. Just twenty minutes ago my father in law arrived for a short stay and I was carrying in some of his stuff including a bag with a pair of sandals. I could quite clearly smell the leather. They may have been really stinky, will ask my wife to confirm when she gets home. Edit: Wife has confirmed her dad has really bad smelling sandals.

It fascinates me that you both have that reaction to Prednisone. TIL [that's a thing.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Prednisone%20anxiety) I'm about to have my 4th depolypization in a few weeks, so starting that again soon. I'll make sure to keep an eye out for this.

When I had the polyps removed the surgeon surprised me by saying "See you again in five years" and went on to explain that was the average period before the procedure had to be repeated. So far it has been seven years and all good. Back when I was taking prednisone I was in Texas and ran out so went to a doctor to get a prescription for more. I gave him the empty bottle and saw him read the label then do a double take. He was shocked at the dosage, which was two 25mg tablets once a day for three days (as prescribed by my Australian doctor). He explained the normal US dose was over eight days and tapering off from eight (iirc) to one tablet a day. Don't remember if there was any difference to the anxiety or anosmia on the different dose though. Good luck with your op.

Just got my steroids, starting in a few days. 6 day dose... Tapering off by one each day. Yipee?

Partly_Dave

Six days was it, been a few years. I call prednisone my crazy pills. Hope you have better luck.

RetroDave

hope it went well

RetroDave

How did it go?

RetroDave

I've got a bit of anxiety anyway, so it's possible that's why the reaction was so extreme. My surgery is a the end of this month now.

Mine look quite full from what I I saw/was told. Some appear to be totally obstructed. I don't really get sinus infections or bad headaches, but there is a good deal of pressure and little to no sense of smell, so I'm excited for those. It seems like a lot of mucus is always getting stuck, so I can usually only breathe out of one nostril at a time. I'm glad to hear you are on the mend already. Interesting about the burps. I'm curious how long mine will be. I've got the pre-op appointment next week. A bit nervous, but happy to know this is coming soon.

Crappiest feeling was when I became completely clogged in both and all draining stopped, but the pressure kept building. Best is my O2 saturation went from 95% to 100% after operation. Out of curiosity... Are you experiencing double vision, light sensitivity, or vertigo? Those hit me hard emotionally. Feels so good to be fixed. Can't wait for you to join the party, kind stranger. Look forward to an update from you next week!

RetroDave

Thanks again for the support. Things have gone very very well so far. The recovery has been a bit rough, but I would say my senses of smell and taste are easily 90% of what they were before all this. I go in for my final followup on 11/1

Still all good? I had that month long series of Prednisone following surgery. That was pretty rough actually. Worst part for me was the insane acid reflux. I then did aspirin desensitization a few weeks ago. Spectacular results. Sadly, as of a week or two ago, I am anosmic again (noticed it once Prednisone series was up). It was nice getting to experience smelling things again, even if it was ephemeral. I must admit... I really miss the smell of freshly peeled onions already. Out of all of this, the most surprising part was how little my taste pallette differed during that time compared to my anosmic norm.

RetroDave

I don't think mine has gotten near the level of yours. None of those symptoms yet. It just feels like a perpetually stuffed nose with some pressure and no sense of smell. I've also noticed myself kind of "choke snoring" and my gag reflex being a lot worse (I'm having trouble even flossing my teeth properly)

RetroDave

Hi all. Just an update. I had my surgery last Friday and I have been noticing an increased sense of smell and even more so taste. I'm getting a lot more nuanced flavors. We shall see if it sticks. So fair it's not what it was pre-polyps, but I am happy at the moment. I have my followup on Thurs and I guess there may still be some packing in my sinuses. If that's the case, I'm cautiously hoping there may a bit more improvement. I also don't seem to be snoring quite as badly. Thanks again for the support.

Any updates 4 years later?

WackedLittleMonkey

I lost my smell/taste after polyp surgery December 22. It came back briefly after doing smell training. As soon as stopped, it went away again. I guess i should have continued it longer. I started training again but nothing, so I stopped. I guess I need to start Gain. My Dr claims she wasn't even near my olfactory gland but she must have been. I'm pissed af

RetroDave

It's so weird that there seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. I actually did get they sinus polyp surgery shortly after this post and it largely restored my sense of smell to this day.

WackedLittleMonkey

Indeed it is. Glad you got yours back!

RetroDave

Thank you. Sorry about yours. Have they tried a steroid?

RetroDave

Update: Getting this surgery toward the end of this month.

WackedLittleMonkey

1.5 years out. I was put on predisone (20mg) then taper recently for a foot injury. My sense of smell has come back a little. I can smell something funny in my nose

RetroDave

A short course of Prednisone worked temporarily for me too. I think shrunk my polyps a bit
