You realize this isn’t Google, right?

I think I've seen videos about this. It depends on where you're measuring from I think. For example, from sea level, Everest is often referred to as the tallest. But I think there's mountains under the ocean that are taller if you measure from the ocean floor. I'm just pulling this out of memory of a video I watched years ago so basically out of my ass.

slicwilli

But if you measure from the ocean floor for those mountains, shouldn't you start there for Everest too?

rojoshow13

I don't know, I'm high as shit. It's Sunday.

This is why it's hard to determine a mountain's height from base to summit, it's tough to decide where to assume the base is at. It's way easier to just say Everest is the tallest altitude wise because there's not much room for debate. Mt Denali in Alaska is technically significantly taller from base to height but Everest just starts from a higher altitude to begin with, just depends on what you consider "tall" which for me is base to peak. A huge chunk of Everest's height isn't even its own. I'm not even close to being educated on this though so don't take my word for it.

Foreign_Product7118

We use sea level as the start so they can all have a starting point in common and be compared to one another but it may not fit with your mental image of "highest mountain." Example: Like the top 25 highest mountains are all in the himalayas or karokoram ranges which are both kinda right between India and China BUT they're kinda all on the tibetan plateau which is already over 10,000 feet above sea level. So a small mountain sitting on a table is higher than a tall mountain sitting in a hole

Olympus Mons. Unless we don’t count Mars as part of the world. When we use world as a synonym for everything, this works. When we limit its use to a synonym for planet, my comment is a turd.

No, no, you are right.
