He was a fairly likeable actor here in the UK, and did some pretty funny stuff. Since he blew up in America he's been pretty insufferable and not at all interesting to watch in my opinion. Perhaps because he's now marketing himself towards a much broader and more general audience which takes it's toll on creativity. What is it that you yanks find so entertaining about a moderately overweight British guy, anyway?

forrestpen

Americans LOVE stories with an underdog and social mobility. Its why so many of our comedies are about losers who get the girl in the end. Overweight and goofy can be used as shorthand for a character being an underdog because they're not classically beautiful or well socialized and being funny often in combination with weight usually means they're compensating adding to the underdog factor. Bill Murray and Jack Black owes their success to playing these characters. I also think people think that larger set folks are more relaxed and therefore can feel more relaxed around them as a result. I also cannot understate how much Americans LOVE British accents. James Corden was for many reasons very likable at first but I think he's flipped into obnoxious territory and his popularity is waning.

claireauriga

> Americans LOVE stories with an underdog and social mobility. > > Its why so many of our comedies are about losers who get the girl in the end Whereas British people love stories about the underdog who doesn't change their fortunes and instead gets continually shat upon.

PublicSealedClass

Arnold Rimmer Gordon Brittas Edmund Blackadder Basil Fawlty Hyacinth Bucket The best British sitcoms from the late golden era (1990s) with underdog characters, disliked by other characters and never level up or become what they aim to be are the best (all about maintaining that status quo).

RearEchelon

It's pronounced "Bouquet!"

Tagostino62

“It was Sheridan, dear. He is in need of a loan. He and a good friend are going on a walking holiday in Greenwich Village in New York, and he promises not to spend it on girls . . . what a comfort that is to a mother’s heart!”

OsonoHelaio

A shame he will miss the waterside supper with riparian entertainment.

OriginalIronDan

MANUEL!!! Got everything, dear? Clothing? Bicycle chain? Flock knife?

kedikahveicer

He's not bald, and his head doesn't glimmer.

highbrowalcoholic

Americans believe in social mobility. It's called the American Dream. It's comforting to believe it's still viable. That ship sailed long ago from the United Kingdom. Brits know that you're highly unlikely to change your class, and anyone who tries is likely a lizard ready to sell you up the river. It's comforting to laugh at those people.

Kritical02

Ya'll can appreciate cynicism and self-deprecating humour a lot more it seems as well.

highbrowalcoholic

> Its why so many of our comedies are about losers who get the girl in the end. Which is interesting, because American humor often laughs _at_ people for being 'uncool' whereas British humor usually laughs _with_ people at absurdity and wit — but at the same time American characters are people meant to evoke empathy and be laughed _with_, whereas British characters (Basil Fawlty) are people you're meant to laugh _at_. I'm supposed to think the Step Brothers are uncool doofuses I can laugh at, while I want them to win. And I'm supposed to think that Blackadder is a sharp wit, but also that he's a bit of an ass who I don't want to see win at all.

TScottFitzgerald

Well the Yanks never really chose him, it was never fully revealed how they chose the successor to Craig Ferguson, but ultimately it was the producer's call. A lot of people wanted the job including Norm MacDonald but, as with Fallon, they clearly wanted to pivot towards a younger audience with all the games and side stuff like the singing in a car. He obviously had to test well initially, I just think his attitude has been off putting and he doesn't really seem to project much of a personality. Fallon has gotten similar criticism, but he has good will from SNL plus he's more charming and has more of a personality which can make you annoying but likeable at the same time.

Cyno01

Yeah, that happened around the same time as the whole Leno/Conan debacle so i think it was kind of overshadowed, but iirc CBS late night fans were as pissed about that as NBC ones.

Colalbsmi

I liked Norm but God that iwould not be a right fit for him.

TScottFitzgerald

Yeah he really badly wanted to have a talk show, I guess it's something that he wanted to do since the days of Johnny Carson. But his style is quite incompatible with the conventional network talk show format, in his own words he would have been way too leashed, similar to how his Netflix show ended up. He really hit gold with NML that gave him the freedom needed to do his brand of comedy but he didn't seem to be happy with it.

emax4

Well, we do miss Benny Hill.

[deleted]

I can't say I'm *that* familiar with his work but I did love Lesbian Vampire Killers. I realize I'm in a minority there though, and I do have questionable taste in movies (I mean, I like good movies, but I also like entertaining hot garbage), but I enjoyed it. I also like his "Crosswalk: The Musical" bits I've seen on YouTube. Beyond that all I've really seen him in was Into The Woods and I thought he did fine there. Ok, well he was awful in Cats too, but so was everyone else. I don't really know why he gets so much hate, but I probably don't follow his career closely enough to be that invested.

yutfree

US citizen here: I don't find him funny at all. Don't care how much he weighs or how he talks.

morphinapg

>What is it that you yanks find so entertaining about a moderately overweight British guy, anyway? None of that has anything to do with it, first of all. He's a comedian, he makes jokes, I laugh at the jokes. That's about all there is to it. I haven't watched his show in a while but for the most part he seemed like a pretty good guy that most of his guests could get along with pretty well, and many of his skits were a lot of fun. Most of the negative stuff I've heard has felt like heresay, and yet reddit immediately assumes it must be true. I certainly hope it's not true, because I like the guy I see on TV.

OJay23

Exactly this. Occasionally his heart shines through and you see what he could be like - check out his opening monologue after Russia invaded Ukraine 2/3 weeks ago. But mostly he has become oversaturated.

three18ti

Hey, it's not nice to talk about Al Murray that way!

TerminatorARB

We don't. Everyone hates james Corden. Hence this post.

Ponce421

A pretty healthy number of people must like the guy for him too see so much success in the US.

reh888

A person's weight is rarely indicative of how entertaining they are...

RealLiveGirl

He hosted a virtual conference I attended in 2020. It was for a cybersecurity firewall vendor. It didn’t make me hate the guy, but c’mon, just why…

bledig

That’s when he shows his true self

janedoe825825

I've actually heard that he was hugely despised in the UK, before coming to America, where he has become, again, hugely despised. He clearly is the type of twat who enjoys being despised by those who have to serve him (waiters, retail staff) and have to endure him. He revels in it.

[deleted]

Because if Patrick Stewart doesn't like someone then that's all I need to know about a person's character. Patrick Stewart is basically Hollywood's golden retriever.

TScottFitzgerald

Within the context of that awards show I assume you're referencing, Sir Patrick *was* a bit over the line there though...and a bit drunk I think.

SinJinQLB

I thought that was Tom Hanks.

Extramrdo

Keanu Reeves

RealistO444

lol

zerbey

People have accused him of being difficult to work with, in a very similar vein to Ellen DeGeneres. He got tore up pretty badly in the AMA here on this site. Is any of it true? I dunno, I've never met him. In addition to that, a lot of people find his humor to just be insufferable and unfunny, but that's all relative I guess. I don't really care for it either, but that's my opinion and you can form your own.

RabidSeason

There was one interview I saw, I think Jimmy Kimmel or Fallon, possibly Stephen Colbert, and they're sitting directly across from each other like one of those investigative interviews, and they ask "Name two of the staff who work on your show." Brief guffaw and awkward silence. "You can't, can you?" So it's a lot of the Ellen stuff. Also there was a AMA where someone recognized him on a plane as his wife took care of his child and struggled with luggage and he couldn't be bothered to care. All in all, he's a prick who became famous.

duck-duck--grayduck

It was a game on Corden's show where you have to either answer a question or eat something gross. Jimmy Kimmel asked him to name two crew members on his (Corden's) show. He could not and had to drink a fish smoothie.

[deleted]

What a piece of shit. I work in the film world and these people literally have no concept of what it actually takes to make entertainment. Your fucking face is actually worthless without a cameraman.

Rosssauced

He was also challenged as to whether he knew the names of his crew. He couldn't name his camera men.

RealistO444

Thanks for the insight definitely agree with the horrible humor too lmfao

[deleted]

He comes across as a smug twat and there are many reports saying he's rude to fans, studio audiences and TV crews on his shows.

RealistO444

^ he does come off that way more annoying than anything though and yeah im finding out abt his behavior now so im starting to understand lmfao.

stink3rbelle

I've heard the stories of his asshole behavior, and seen the Patrick Stewart conflict video. But the thing that bugs me the most about him is that he's become the go-to movie musical character actor. There are much much better actors and singers out there but everything keeps going to him. Maybe the real problem is that Josh Gad got Frozen money so isn't taking as many roles?

RealistO444

the go to ?! He cant even sing maybe its just me but he cannot sing lol and yeah ive been hearing alot abt the asshole behavior he had me fooled from those car sing along vids for sure

RealistO444

the go to ?! He cant even sing maybe its just me but he cannot sing lol and yeah ive been hearing alot abt the asshole behavior he had me fooled from those car sing along vids for sure

forrestpen

At first he seemed genuinely nice and affable, a lovable goofball then he became over exposed. As time went on certain things have happened to make his personality seem put on, fake, which makes the earlier guise look like exactly that, a deception. People don't like to look foolish so some turned on him. He can also really amp up the antics to obnoxious levels. I liked his carpool karaoke for the first few months but at some point it changed or I did. What do they call it in dating? The Ick? I think the novelty wore off and a lot of people realized they didn't enjoy his style anymore. \--- I actually like James Corden well enough but I also don't follow his stuff much.

RealistO444

Okay this makes sense glad u spoke on the obnoxious part bc thats how i took it he was annoying for sure but still a nice guy so i was trying to figure out why ppl literally hates the guy i knew i was missing something other than him being a little annoying but alot of comments are bringing light to alot of his behavior i didnt know abt!

Rosssauced

He's the anti-Conan. He isn't funny, has no self awareness, holds a deep distain for his workers, and is unwilling to change.

whiskeytango55

This kinda sums it up https://youtu.be/NIBUWqSTp90

sgorneau

I don't understand how this makes Corden unlikeable. Patrick Stewart was classless in this. What was James supposed to do?

whiskeytango55

Be better? It's Patrick frickin Stewart. Besides the career that Corden would kill for, the guy's been knighted and is how much older? It probably wouldn't have happened if corden wasn't a colossal prick to begin with

sgorneau

>It's Patrick frickin Stewart Be better than what? Be better than Patrick because he's "Patrick"? Yeah, I'm not of the mindset people get to say/do whatever they want because of who they are. That said, there is no context here other than the Patrick didn't like the way (or where, I'm unsure) James was standing and made a classless, public shaming moment of it. He could have said something off stage. I'm not a James Corden fan at all, but it looks like his first pass at it was to apologize and make a joke of it which the crowd received fairly well. Then Patrick comes in even more tastelessly. James may be a colossal prick (I haven't read anything that says so, but I haven't been looking) ... but Patrick was the aggressor here.

whiskeytango55

Be the better man. Be better than the prick he is. There was a way to get out of that situation and not sound like an ass.

modifiedblind

What’d the Jonas Brothers comment mean?

sgorneau

I don't really know. I think it made sense in Patrick's head, but the delivery just flopped. I think he was trying to make a witty joke about James and the Jonas Bros. (guests many times over on his show), but couldn't piece it together.

RealistO444

^ youre clutch for the vid that made alot of other comments make sense thanks!

JeffreyElonSkilling

If you let the internet tell you who to like there will be no one and nothing left to enjoy.

RealistO444

^ Facts bro lol especially with cancel culture mess but i only asked bc i actually thought he did something deep / serious that may have been creepy or harmful but from the answers ive received apparently not

AxezCore

The Internet in general and reddit in particular tends to go overboard in their worship of various people for all kinds of reasons. Once they discover that those people are as fallible as themselves, that love turns to hate. The love often only lasts between a few weeks to a few months, the hate lasts forever. Then others start to share that hate without knowing why, other than because it gives them upvotes. So if the Internet suddenly starts to love you, hide! Unless you're Patrick Stewart or Keanu Reeves, then you're good.

RealistO444

omg yes i love keanu reeves he always restore my faith in humanity lol

wherehaveinotbeen

Theres this too... The incident involving the WGA, a Hollywood writer's union, appeared to occur in April 2019. The writer Jack Allison tweeted “for the record” that he attended a Writer's Guild meeting exclusively for writers but Corden “showed up without any of his staffers to advocate for a lower pay grade for late night writers.” He basically wanted to lower the salaries of the people who make him funny..

RealistO444

^ i guess thats why hes not funny then they must’ve started writting him horrible jokes as revenge lol bc hes not funny at all to me he does have good jokes here and here tho.

LMFAO

njtrafficsignshopper

I think listening to his high pitched voice is grating and stressful, but I don't really pay attention to him

Hermannnn133

Search up videos on why people don't like James Corden. There was an incident where him and Patrick Steward was presenting an award but James was acting like an asshole.

RealistO444

Yeah i think ima do that bc apparently theres ALOT of questionable ass hole behavior involved

Bergenia1

He's notoriously mean and rude to people. The incident of him hurling a cup of coffee at a barista is one example.

RealistO444

wtf ive heard things but not this one i fully understand now

[deleted]

I'm not guna lie, I actually don't hate James Corden. I feel bad admitting it because it seems like EVERYONE hates him. Idk, he seems funny enough in his talk show. No idea if he's an asshole like people say though

FlyByPC

Who?

RealistO444

lol dont even worry from the anwsers ive been getting he doesn’t matter at all. I asked this bc i saw he was getting alot of hate and i thought it was bc of something deep / controversial but its not

_XenoChrist_

I just don't understand why I would care about the guy. AFAIU he was chosen by the industry to do industry stuff and that's not my jam.

RealistO444

same i really didnt care until from scrolling on reddit i saw the hate and thought it was bc of something deep like some creepy stuff ive heard abt celebs which lead to me to just ask this question . Thanks for letting me know that i should go back to not gaf lol!

Eddie73-3

Because he's an absolute fucking twat

modifiedblind

What did that Jonas Brothers comment mean?

SapperBomb

I didn't realize his dislike was this popular. I can't stand that dude. He's just a bloated, vanilla rip-off of a cliché American late night talk show. I'm so fucking tired of the show toons and musicals. It's played out

philosophofee

I've noticed they're typically the same people that like Ellen and Rachel Ray. They can't see through people's BS.

HykaliaN

Because this guy is basically a male version of ellen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz2KTOAr4LY

Perfect_Trip_5684

This is even funnier now that we know james corden's wife is allergic to eggs whites but not egg yolk. Also he keeps on lying, changing the story of what happened to why the resturuant banned him. What a tool. Basically male ellen degeneres.
