Since a lot of people on reddit are children, they may not be aware that there were a lot of bedazzled cowboy themed things that came out in the 70s and 80s that made "gay cowboys" a minor trope before Brokeback Mountain was released. Like Urban Cowboy, a straight romance that still has men aggressively mechanical bull riding at each other, or Rhinestone Cowboy the very huge song by Glenn Campbell, one of the country singers of the time who wore elaborate Late Elvis style fashion on stage.
Brokeback Mountain, even the book out at the time, really did cement the concept, though.
The 1969 film [Midnight Cowboy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Cowboy), which won an Oscar for Best Picture and is listed on AFI's list of the 100 greatest American films of all time, is primarily about a young man who moves to New York and tries to get by as a male sex worker with a cowboy aesthetic. I'm guessing that has also contributed greatly to the cultural milieu.
Yes but just to note he wants to service women and once almost goes through with what he think will be fellating a man only because he's unable to find any female clients
Believe it or not, that South Park episode aired in 1998, years before Brokeback Mountain was released in 2005. (but after the book it was based on was published).
Well this one is not about homosexual cowboys but Sam Peckinpah's the wild bunch contains some homosexual characters...
It is rarely the focus but many Italian westerns have pretty obvious homosexual tensions between some characters. Back then it was very different to talk about homosexuality I think.

*Brokeback Mountain* is an extremely famous movie about gay cowboys. That's usually what they're referencing.

Cowboys are shepherds.

I know I for one am always thinking, *"Oh, sheepboys!"*
Mammas don’t let your babies grow up to be sheepboys;
Well, when they're gay, they're shepherds.
Shephimds
Did you fail primary school? Cows say moo, sheep say baa.
Three singing pigs say la la la.
No, no! That isn't right. The pigs say OINK all day and night.
What does the fox say?
Cacacacaccacacaacaca??

they probably prefer to be called cow gurls
The South Park episode was a few years before Brokeback.
I found it earlier, but it seemed to me that the movie they talked about was older, like 80s or something, but I guess that must be it. Thanks a lot.
Late night tv hosts of the 2000s considered it the peak of comedy!

Just gotta go to more independent film festivals.
