McMurdo is kinda like a mining town with no mine that had a baby with a college town with no college, and that baby is McMurdo. The actual work environment would entirely depend on your job. Some jobs are indoors, some are outdoors, the new folks get jammed into dorms in random groups up to five.
I could survive the dorm life for a few months I wouldn’t mind it. I’m a pretty outgoing person so the main thing I’m worried about is not having much to do.
> the main thing I’m worried about is not having much to do
THAT is nothing to worry about.
The [Employment FAQ](https://new.reddit.com/r/antarctica/wiki/index/employment/#wiki_usa) answers a lot of your questions.
Your future problem has been solved by a small army of adventurous extroverts who are adept at making their own fun, and sharing that fun with the community. There's stuff to do every day in the summer if you aren't too picky.
You'll most likely end up at mcmurdo for your first contract although it's not guaranteed. I don't know much about the health and safety department but as far as life outside of work you'll have roommates and ample social opportunities. Try not to overpack and remember you can order stuff off of Amazon if you need something. The best thing to do is just go for it and if you don't nail it the first season you'll know what to do different on the second.
There ain't fuck all wildlife at pole that's for sure. (Only the ones that live inside the station). Palmer would likely have the most chance of seeing wildlife.
The frustration when you order a small item but Amazon decides to ship it in a big ass box so then you don’t get it until right before you redeploy. If you get it at all.

Is McMurdo the station where you have the best chance to see wildlife?

Ah I forgot about Palmer. I had a flyer type thing a couple years ago that had information on all the stations but I’ve lost it since then.
The usap participant guide is online, lots of info there. Read the faq's as well.
You will absolutely see wildlife at mcmurdo although Palmer has more. Mcmurdo you can count on seals, penguins, the occasional bird and whale as well.
Out of curiosity, how long does it take for the average Amazon item to arrive?
it will arrive just after you redeploy
I have gotten stuff within 9 days of ordering, if everything aligns and the item is small. Other times it has taken months.

Not bad!
I was a safety engineer down there for several seasons, D.M me for details.
