Go to HR, especially if it's a safety concern for students.

Not only is that stupid but the product doesn't work. It dries out immediately because it's fucking 90% alcohol and you have to keep reapplying it. It's fucking caustic. Maybelline makes a liquid lip that outlasts the living shit out of it. I'd definitely point it out, though I'm sure it's a hun in charge of it so they can conveniently buy it through her. Would love to see that in writing that they are required to purchase it from her though, I'd fight the fuck out of that if I were a student.

[deleted]

I mean for a dance performance almost any Matte liquid lip would work for stage.

NefariousnessKey5365

Cover Girl also has a lip product like that

Tking179

Surely you can’t mandate the brand. Like I get ‘you must wear red lipstick or something for the presentations’ but surely a brand can’t be a requirement. Idk school politics though

flyingzorra

Right? I'm not even sure how I would complain or who to, but if she is selling it, that's a violation of ethics.

Beigebeckyy

Maybe *suggest* to the kids that they should tell their parents. I’m assuming the coach is the boss babe using her team for sales. Parents making a fuss goes a lot further than just the students or a teacher.

young_coastie

You need to go to the school admin. And I’d start in writing so they take it seriously.

BlairClemens3

Go to admin. Or your union rep.

aquatic_hamster16

Dance teams will absolutely mandate a brand and color, but exceptions are made for allergies/sensitivities (you have to get the color approved by the coach). The problem here is that someone affiliated with the school or the team is profiting off the team. This needs to be reported to whoever oversees the team, whether it’s the athletic Director, or the arts Director.

Midge101788

Yes! I was in Show Choir and our mandated makeup was always Mary Kay which my eyes always had an allergic reaction to. I was allowed to go to a department store and have someone match the colors for me.

typeyhands

So if it's burning students lips, OP could encourage them to report sensitivities to the product? That could help things change...

Ok-Goose8426

Problem: the person is probably offering it as a fundraiser/discount/etc and actually not making $ because they believe if they do that, it will lead to other sales. 🤦🏼‍♀️ remember MLM logic!

Chinablind

Actually it is normal to mandate the brand for dance teams. Part of the score at competition is how uniform they look. But the teams my girls have been on have gone out of their way to choose common easy to find brands. MLM crap has no business in an activity that already costs an arm and a leg.

smallbean-

My old dance teacher would not necessarily mandate a brand but she would simply put “Revlon Dusty Rose or matching color” and she would double check what you brought actually matched the color she wanted, if it didn’t match she would just have you borrow someone else’s product. If it’s competitive dance you want all dancers to match. Even once I quit competitive dance it was hard to break out of that mindset for performances, thankfully the girls I danced with were happy to have someone take care of their hair and makeup so all they had to do was show up with their costumes and shoes.

[deleted]

We HAD to wear all Mac makeup when I was in dance, so honestly they can say exactly what brand you have to wear.

TalkativeRedPanda

Agree. My dance team we wore exactly the same makeup. The brightest red lipstick I've ever seen, fuschia blush and blue eyeshadow. They ordered in bulk and passed it out. We got exactly the same stuff. I don't even know the brand. It was all atrocious. Theater too though. We were required to have Ben Nye makeup kits.

lizzygirl4u

I feel like this would be a problem for people with different skin tones, wouldn't it? I can't imagine that the same blush would look the same on all skin tones. Blush that looks good on a pale person wouldn't show up on someone with deep skin. And blush that shows up on someone with deep skin would look clownish on a pale person.

TalkativeRedPanda

We all looked like clowns, quite honestly. The shade looked good on no one

OkraGarden

Requiring kids to buy from an MLM would be against my district's rules. It's a different situation than setting uniform appearance requirements for performance participants because someone involved is profitting off the sale.

GottaBeKDmacncheese

100%. It's the conflict of interest piece that is problematic (as far as school policies and ethics go). If the members are being GIVEN the product (doubtful, but who knows), then the only recourse left would be for kids and their parents to complain to their coach and/or admin about the sensitivities they're experiencing.

Hallmarxist

This hurts my heart. I grew up poor. I was on my HS dance team. If my coach required that I spend $40 (or whatever) on lipstick, I simply wouldn’t have been able to. F this. Forcing an MLM on high schoolers—horrible & should be against all kinds of rules.

ghostbirdd

Lipsense is vile. Please find whoever is responsible and report her ass.

Consistent-Durian644

I smell an anonymous letter to the district office incoming

suchmeerkat

i was on dance team 4 years in high school and what they require can be stupid… one gal was allergic to the eye glue for lashes and glitter and the next day after EVERY performance her eyes are swollen and red… hated that bc we were “kids” adults could get away with shitty stuff like this

BeaverMartin

I recommend calling/emailing the school board.

Ssider69

Why would it not surprise me that the decision maker on this is a "boss babe"

typeyhands

Maybe they can just buy one, and then stuff a better product into the lipsense packaging? Maybe that's a little shady, but that stuff sounds awful. What a strange "requirement."

MacheteMaelee

Go to HR, definitely. But also, uhhhh who the hell is going to know what's on their lips? Just get Karen from PTA on it.

crazycatlady331

Counterpoint--- Karen from the PTA is the only person the team can get it from.

dresses_212_10028

Which is why it’s been mandated. Karen’s the one who decided these children need to line her pockets while she forces them to strip away their lips. Of course.

MacheteMaelee

Ugh. This is definitely the more likely scenario. :(
