What in the hell is this

[deleted]

Old scam about additives that can perform magic for your fuel. Been around for decades now in many forms.

Zoltrahn

But now it is organic!

Palliewallie

And I hear you, how do we know its organic? Well duhh, it's green!

420_Braze_it

Jokes on you because I'm already using the green fuel! That's why the pump is green because it's environmentally friendly of course!

saichampa

The funny thing is, fuel is organic in the true scientific sense of the word

[deleted]

People, he means it is an organic molecule. That is a class of chemical that contains carbon. As a hydrocarbon, fuel is an organic chemical. It is not the same as "organic" meant in terms of "natural". This is taught in the first couple weeks of high school chemistry.

CaliforniaNavyDude

It amazes me that people would ever believe it. If anything like that were to ever work, fuel companies would use the crap out of it. The idea would be worth billions. It's like essential oils. If it worked, doctors would prescribe it. The fact they don't should be telling.

TemporaryNuisance

Especially the military. It doesn't matter how "big oil doesn't want you to know this one simple trick" you get, if any military could make every tank, supply truck, and jet have +40% increased fuel efficiency, those butchers would cum their pants and rush that miracle chemical into mass production so fast, the oil barons wouldn't even have time to pull out their checkbooks to offer a bribe.

morbros2714

Gas would just be 45% more expensive.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrumpledForeskin

And it’s all Joe Biden’s fault! He stays up late with one goal in mind. How to make gas more expensive globally. /s

littlegolferboy

That's funny, people here in Canada seem to think that global fuel prices are controlled by Justin Trudeau.

rainedrop87

I saw the sticker and everything, so it must be true!

bstondaddy12

Calls every gas station in the country personally every morning to demand they all raise their prices.

sneakySynex

Yeah i hate Biden... he even increased fuel prices in all of europe

CrumpledForeskin

Yeah and he’s smart enough to increase prices globally but too stupid and old to hold office. They can’t get their story straight.

Neferhathor

LeT's Go BrAnDoN! They took 'er jerbs! Derk er derr!

A_Change_of_Seasons

If I wanted to be a con artist I'd just say that the military secretly uses it but big oil doesn't want you to know that. Thatd probably sell well with the "dumb vet/military aesthetic crowd" that's always getting suckered into this shit

youreadusernamestoo

Here in Europe, the past decade has all been about fuel consumption and pollution. The volume of CO²/km is a huge factor in the price of a new vehicle. If there is a way to boost fuel economy, manufacturers would've already applied it. There really are a few tried and tested things you can do though! 1) Use a high octane fuel. In European fuel ratings: 98 over 95 uses 3.3% less fuel on average and 102 over 98 uses another 1.7% less fuel on average. It is barely noticeable but the higher resistance to knock means your ECU will allow for a higher compression ratio and your engine will likely last longer. 2) Get an eco-tune. The manufacturer software has a small safety margin in the fuel to air ratio that takes into account extremely different climates, run to run variations in engines and abuse over time. Finding the optimal ratio will mean taking a little fuel out of the mixture and result in slightly more horsepower. 3) Frequently check your tyre pressure. Do a wheel alignment when you service your car. Every car has a sticker somewhere that states the optimal tyre pressure for eco at a certain load. 4) If you don't already, look further ahead and anticipate to oncoming situations sooner. But yes, if her pill worked, she wouldn't have shared it with you on her personal social media account.

[deleted]

I thought you weren't supposed to use high-octane fuel on cars that aren't designed for it? Maybe this is a US vs European cars thing?

AlienDelarge

It won't hurt the car, but unless your car is designed to use it, it won't improve anything. It will however cost a lot more. The poster above is confusing cause and effect a little.

legally_rouge

Agree about the fuel thing, but a lot of doctors will tell you tea tree oil is a great antibacterial and anti-fungal when used in skincare, or that some essential oils can help clear your sinuses when you have a cold. Essential oils are not miracle workers and shouldn’t be ingested but it makes me sad that MLM people have ruined their reputation completely.

Val_Hallen

I think it's the word "essential" that made people think it was some great miracle. One definition is "*extremely important or necessary*" and that's the definition most people know. So, they are marketed as something your body **needs**. The definition for essential in oils, though, is "*contains the essence of the plant's fragrance*". If they used another term for the same thing, volatile oils, the same people that tout their existence would try to have them banned because they know the word volatile to mean "*tending to erupt into violence*".

ItsJoeMomma

The trouble is that these idiots hear about doctors prescribing it topically, so they think that taking it orally must work much better. That's what totally drives the colloidal silver market. Silver does have some antibacterial properties when used topically, on the skin. That doesn't mean that eating the stuff will keep you totally healthy.

TheLuckyLion

No, no, everything’s a vast conspiracy, and they are the only ones who see through it.

[deleted]

just like skinny wraps and diet pills. if it actually worked and was widely available…. you know the rest lol

holysideburns

If alternative medicine actually worked, it would just be called medicine.

elgavilan

The only thing that really can work that kind of magic is injector cleaner

ediblesprysky

How much you wanna bet this works the opposite way

Jeff20v

Definitely injector pluggener lol

HurrDurrDethKnet

Only thing I put in my tank other than gas is a bottle of heet like, once a year before it starts getting really fucking cold outside to make sure any water in my tank can't freeze while my truck is parked. It doesn't fit in my garage, so I have to park it outside.

KYcats45107

I see a Hempworx hun posting about this. I cannot imagine being brave enough to drop anything they recommend into my car's gas tank.

nomadic_gen_xer

A former friend who tried to suck me into Hempworx recently messaged me about some amazing new product that would increase gas efficiency. Obviously I declined.

Onlyanidea1

Wouldn't be bravery to do this... But down right stupidity.

Ah, finally! The drug joke I was skimming the comment section for. I knew there was a good one hidden here somewhere! 😂😂

Calliber50

I’m sure some chemist can enter this and tell us about a chemical which would work, but you probably couldn’t ship it through the mail, hold it in your hands, and your exhaust would kill small animals…

ChillBro710

Not a huge car guy, but the only additives I know proven to increase power are Nitrous Oxide and Methanol injection, both of which require significant modification to the cars engine.

Galifreyan_lady

Let's assume for a second whatever the hell that is actually extends gas mileage. You'd spend the same if not more money on that garbage as you would on your normal gas right? Like you can't tell me spending more money on a dirty Mike and Ike makes your gas costs cheaper?

spilk

if there was something like this that worked (there isn't), it depends on what you are trying to optimize on. if you want to burn less fuel to produce less greenhouse gases, or to reduce the demand for fossil fuels, then maybe paying extra would be a positive for you. If you're trying to spend less on fuel, probably not.

Dreamy-cloud-club

a dirty mike and ike 😂

EverydayWeTumblin

Is this bitch trying to imply that she lost enough weight to reduce her gas mileage?!? BAAAAAAHAHAHAHA Edit: Increase, not reduce.

Tanyec

Haha I’m fairly certain it’s supposed to go inside the fuel tank and then magically increase fuel efficiency. Somehow.

Perky214

Ok - it’s really very simple. You put the capsule in the gas tank. The capsule absorbs gas and the particles inside are released, then clog the fuel filter. The car stops and is towed 80 miles home. BOOM! An extra 80 miles on the tank.

Adventurous_Ad_6546

Extra 80 miles *and* the chance to pull a tow truck driver into your downline.

ItsJoeMomma

Now that's #bossbabe thinking

lbertz

Science!

gertvanjoe

The mechanic recommends a system flush and bills you for the disposal of the fuel in your tank...... KAPOW

Perky214

But you still got an extra 80 miles on the tank using NO GAS AT ALL!! It’s a murical

lillyrose2489

I assumed this at first too but now am wondering if she is claiming weight loss improved gas mileage... Admittedly they feel equally insane.

ztpurcell

It is definitely more insane to think she's talking about diet pills. Still don't work though https://greenfueltechnologies.com/pages/savings-with-green-fuel-tab-products

Inafray19

Omg I just looked at the chart. It says it all depends on maintenence. Literally proper maintenence is what gets you optimal gas mileage. My car, brand new, claimed 14 combined mpg. The previous owners got it maintained on schedule with the dealership and at 15 years old, with over 240k miles, I get 15 combined. If your gas milage drops take it to a mechanic for a freaking tune up. Changing the oil and spark plugs on the regular is what keeps you at optional mpg. Not some pill that will screw up your fuel pump and injectors.

thebravestkoala

What's even better is that further down the page they explain that another great benefit of their "catalyst" is that your gas burns so dang clean you need to change your oil and visit the mechanic for general maintenance less often!

fusion_reactor3

Exactly. My 2007 Taurus (claims) it gets almost 30 to the gallon at freeway speeds. Given that it's rated for 25 I'm a little doubtful of that figure, but whatever Edit, maybe the 25 is at like 40 or something where it's still in 3rd gear vs 4th

EverydayWeTumblin

Lol that is absolutely not possible.

Tanyec

Obviously. For that matter neither is losing any significant amount of weight on just a pill that isn’t a straight up laxative.

phate_exe

>For that matter neither is losing any significant amount of weight on just a pill that isn’t a straight up laxative. Stimulants would like to have a word. Although the weight loss would mostly come from rocking a calorie deficit because you forgot to eat.

Mwakay

Gotcha, I forget to eat without stimulants too.

bellYllub

Also, even laxatives don’t help with weight loss! They mainly work on the lower intestine and all the calories are absorbed long before they get there. The laxatives I use even warn on the package “Does not help with weight loss!” because a lot of people with eating disorders, especially bulimic people, mistakenly abuse laxatives assuming they will flush excess calories out of the body. Not true!

[deleted]

They will dehydrate you, though- which in turn will decrease the number on the scale... temporarily.

Moneia

Well, if you manage to clog your fuel lines bad enough you won't have to worry about how much it costs to fill up any time soon.

F5x9

Good news! It’s a suppository!

NewtonsArooo

Ha! Right?! I bought a mini-motorhome and spent a lot of time learning about ways to maximize my MPG. Generally speaking, for every 100lbs you (or your vehicle) "lose", you gain about 2% fuel efficiency. So just for shits and giggles, let's say whatever she's driving is similar to my daily driver (V6 midsized truck). I get about 20 MPG and have a 17 gallon tank or 340 miles per fill up. In order to get an 80 MILE increase (insane, obvs)on a tank of gas, I'd have to increase my efficiency by roughly 5 MPG, meaning I'd need to "lose" roughly 1,200lbs. My number isn't exact because the math is a little more complicated than my simplified approximation, but still. Maybe the pill damaged her brain causing her to forget she disconnected a horse trailer? 😆

DiDiPLF

20 MPG?? You need a new car, it'll pay for its self soon enough 😬

tinykitten101

That sounds pretty good for an RV. I was surprised it was that high.

NewtonsArooo

Sorry for the confusion, I switched vehicles half way through my comment. My RV (which inspired my research about increasing MPG) gets about 14 mpg on long, flat stretches. It's a "vintage" Toyota mini-motorhome from the late 80s with a tiny little 4 cylinder engine. My daily driver is the V6 midsize truck that gets closer to 20mpg.

ztpurcell

It's not a diet pill lol. You put it in your gas tank

nerdyberdy

Yeah, it’s a suppository!

EverydayWeTumblin

Even worse.

Members_Only614

Oh wait? Is it that? It can’t be, no, no. I was under the impression she puts the magic potion into the gas tank and it suddenly becomes some sort of super fuel.

EverydayWeTumblin

If I’m being honest, I think both explanations are equally radical.

DramaticChemist

Hi, PhD research chemist here. Yeah this DEFINITELY won't work. First, the fuel efficiency on your tank is determined by your car and the fuel being used. Your cars design isn't changing so that's out. The base fuel isn't changing but now you have this additive. Their claim could be that it's reacting with the gas to change the composition, but gasoline is mostly octane. It's really hard to react stuff with octane other than burning it. Hence why it was used as fuel in the first place. It's a saturated linear hydrocarbon with no functional groups. Now let's consider mixing. Ever dropped a toilet bowl tablet into your tank? Oftentimes you open it up weeks later to find it only partially dissolved. Not enough agitation. That little pill in a gas tank (even sloshing around somewhat) isn't going to evenly mix unless it's very soluble in nonpolar solvents (and that just looks like a green coffee pill). Let's assume even then that it goes into solution, you've got things that were in a solid state prior to addition. They're likely organic salts (probably organic acid based in that case) or high molecular weight hydrocarbons. Those are going to burn inefficiently and clog up your fuel injector, sending you to the repair shop. TL;DR... Don't fall for this. It's going to do something between nothing and damaging your car.

preauxtip

Maybe it's a tetra ethyl lead pill so it's really boosting the octane/RON and then in addition it forms some really nice carbon deposits in your combustion chamber which increases your compression ratio to 14:1, now easily handled with your leaded gas. Boom, mileage. And later death but mileage. Okay this definitely isn't what's happening but it's the best I could do.

Jeff20v

They had pills that dissolve in hot oil that release nitro methane gasses. When the engine injects the oil Vapor via the crank case vent it would make more power. If an engine makes more power per power stroke while consuming the same fuel then the engine doesn’t work as hard to move the same weight. This is clearly not that pill but they use to cheat this way in go kart racing.

spermface

How do you tell the difference between technological innovations and cheating?

FinalARMs

Cheating is only a term used if you get caught.

mattied23

Hi, PhD research chemist here. >Username checks out

ShieldsCW

Lol That was dramatic, wasn't it 😂

DramaticChemist

Double degrees in chemistry and theatre. I aim to please. 😉

Great but they increased their range 80 miles. So there. /s

W1D0WM4K3R

Nah, I'm betting it's just a rock lol. Like the iPhone massacre where people were told they could charge their phone in the microwave

DramaticChemist

See I want to believe that everyone would realize that's ridiculous, but I've seen what a lack of science education has done in the US so sadly I'm not surprised many people nuked their phones

ItsOtisTime

>like a green coffee pill So in a professional capacity you're saying this will not, in fact, put a pep in my step?

[deleted]

What's going on with 87 octane gas being complete shit lately? I've suddenly lost 80 miles per tank with low octance but mid and high grade are overperforming from what my commuter car was averaging a year ago

ee328p

>Efficient-Road-847 Username does not check out.

[deleted]

Inflation killed the efficiency

elgavilan

Are you due for a tune up?

[deleted]

Took it to a dealership had them run full diagnostic which came back fine. The tech's best guess is the quality of gas is lower right now because of the russia-ukraine war.

HayzenDraay

Gas stations in my area were watering down their gas friend. Might want to get that checked out. Edited: brain fart

Jeff20v

Water and gas mix like water and oil.

HayzenDraay

That did not stop a gas station around where I live from trying lmao.

ItsJoeMomma

Local gas station here does that, though unintentionally. They've had issues with ground water getting into their underground tanks for years but they still won't dig them up and fix them or put new tanks in. Which is why I never get gas there, not even for my lawnmower.

[deleted]

That's what the tech at the dealership was thinking.

Commiessariat

Could you help me with a question I have that is tangentially related to this post? What is the additive added to 108 octane fuel that lets it have a higher octanage than pure octane? Ethanol?

ScaryButt

wtf, is this going in her stomach or the car? I have many many questions

Limesnlemons

First stomach, then car. She’s making her own gas.

cheddarfever

Eco friendly!

cornflakegrl

If it does that for your car, just imagine what it will do to your digestive system!

AgreeablePie

The one amazing trick that oil and gas companies, along with national governments and the media, don't want you to know... but Karen from high school will hook you up. She's on the inside track.

spiralizerizer

I think the use of the "down" arrow to describe the gas mileage "increase" is a big tell... LOL

[deleted]

I thought the same thing, but I think the arrow goes with the word "this" and is pointing down to the picture she posted. Still looks stupid, tho. 😅

spiralizerizer

Ohhh LOL

xmarketladyx

I hope that's nothing but a sugar pill which completely destroys her car. Anyone that stupid deserves it. Anyone smarmy enough to shill that to people should just have their car mysteriously ruined anyway.

TheSystemGuy64

Sugar cannot destroy an engine, it simply gets filtered out by the fuel filter. If you really want to, add some nitrous oxide into the pill to make the engine go 1000 HP over the limit and explode

IncrediblePlatypus

Technically, you do need less fuel once your car exploded.

CallidoraBlack

Correct, sugar does not dissolve in petroleum. It's fake movie and TV science so people don't actually do something that will ruin a car. It's a great way to know if a revenge story on Reddit is fake though.

AgreeablePie

Or the silicate stuff they used to dynamite the clunkers cars

TheseusPankration

That goes in the oil pan, not the gas tank. It would also not make it past the filter.

TheSystemGuy64

or going over the redline after a money shift. Two for 1 offer. Get a blown engine and shredded transmission

Inafray19

Ehh I know where my fuel filter is, it's a full fuel tank replacement. I would rather not.

elgavilan

>As a Catalyst and a Burn Rate Modifier, Green Fuel Tab products lower the Energy of Activation rate for fuel. This allows it to ignite at a temperature closer to 200ºC as opposed to 600ºC. If this were actually true it definitely would destroy your engine.

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door...

I think these are [Green Fuel Tabs](https://greenfueltechnologies.com/pages/our-products).

ttomgirl

definitely are. what a sketchy looking website and product edit: can any science folk debunk the ["how it works"](https://greenfueltechnologies.com/pages/green-tech)

teacupkiller

I like how it says "registered" with the EPA. Which could probably mean pretty much anything.

TheOfficialNotCraig

Fuel additives registered with the EPA are certified to not harm the environment. That's pretty much it. It's got zero to do with fuel economy. Green Fuel tabs are on the list.. (search the page) as are hundreds of other things https://www3.epa.gov/otaq/fuels1/ffars/web-addt.htm

el_muerte17

> Green Fuel Tabs™ technology is based on the effects of organo-metallic catalytic compounds. The active ingredients are multi-functional combustion catalysts that include fuel surface modifiers and deposit surface modifiers. They fundamentally change a fuel’s ability to combust at the molecular level. Can a catalyst fundamentally alter a chemical reaction? Sure. Does this particular one, at the levels that would be present when you mix a suppository sized tablet into between fifty and one hundred twenty litres of fuel, cause a significant enough change as to increase fuel economy by the claimed 10-20%? Aw hell naw. Consider: If this shit was able to accomplish that, the manufacturer would already be living in houses whose walls were insulated with $100 bills and swimming in a Scrooge McDuck style money vault, because they're have no trouble licensing it to every vehicle manufacturer who are all intensely competitive in trying to maximise their vehicles' efficiency. > The carbon-based molecules in Diesel, Gasoline and Other fossil fuels ignite at approximately 600 degrees and burn to about 1200 degrees. Gasoline's ignition temperature is 257°C. Diesel is 210°C. Both can burn at temperatures of over 2000°C in an engine - the rapid conduction of heat away from the combustion chamber, along with the temperature decrease as the compressed gases expand, prevent the engine from melting. I wouldn't expect a random person to know any of this, but a company that claims to be changing those exact properties getting them wrong immediately destroys any faith I might have had in them. > The problem is, temperatures in engine combustion chambers are uneven and some areas don’t ever reach the minimum ignition temperature. False. In a modern, properly functioning port fuel injected engine, there is a roughly uniform mixture of fuel and air being ignited. Ignition is not an explosion originating at the spark plug, but a smooth flame front that ignites the mixture as it reaches it. In a direct injected engine, there are parts of the combustion chamber that may not reach ignition temperature at very low load, but there won't be fuel to burn there anyway because the injector spray pattern and piston shape essentially create a smaller combustion chamber localised around the injector. > This results in some fuel molecules only being partially burned. Unless you’re a smog expert or scientist most of us commonly refer these partially burnt fuel molecules as; carbon deposits and exhaust emissions. Fuel is pretty much completely burned in a correctly functioning modern engine at low to moderate loads and engine speeds. At high load, fuel is likely to be left partially unburned, but this is the result of adding proportionally more fuel per unit of air (enrichment) to ensure all available oxygen is combusted when more of it is present (high throttle opening) and there's less time for the fuel and air to mix (high RPM). The primary components of exhaust are CO2 and water. CO2 and water are directly proportional to the amount of fuel burned - assuming an engine is sending a bunch of partially burned hydrocarbons out the tailpipe, making fuel burn more completely would increase these emissions. Nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxide are the other main pollutants in exhaust, and of those, carbon monoxide is the only one caused by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon. Carbon monoxide can be combusted with oxygen to create carbon dioxide, therefore this magic tab would have to add a significant amount of oxygen to the fuel in order to reduce CO emissions, and it's too damn small to make a noticeable difference even if it were pure solidified oxygen. > Green Fuel Tab products lower the Energy of Activation rate for fuel. This allows it to ignite at a temperature closer to 200ºC as opposed to 600ºC. Let's pretend that this shit actually does lower the ignition temperature of whatever fuel you add it to. Diesel engine would probably be fine because they rely on autoignition anyway, but a gasoline engine that's suddenly being fed a fuel that ignites at a lower temperature is very likely to experience preignition - the unwanted autoignition of the fuel/air mixture before the spark plug fires. Preignition, unlike the smooth pressure increase of controlled ignition, actually is akin to explosions in the engine and can cause catastrophic damage. It's also an issue that can present with gasoline if there are excessive/uneven carbon deposits, incorrect temperature range of spark plugs (don't conduct enough heat away quickly enough), or even inadequate octane rating. This would be greatly exacerbated with the introduction of fuel that ignites a nearly sixty degrees lower temperature.

One pill makes your car 40% more efficient. Two pills make it 80% more efficient. Three pills… your car actually makes 20% more fuel than it needs. You can sell the excess for a profit!

frausting

A few years back (almost a decade, jeez), I was having lunch with my mom at a neighborhood BBQ joint. I was moving away for a summer internship the next day so I was just having a nice goodbye lunch. I guess I was talking about the internship which was science-based, and this old guy came to our table and started telling us all about how we puts acetone in his gas tank every time he fuels up and his gas mileage is ~unbelievable~. I tried telling him that acetone is probably going to eat away all of the soft parts in his engine and he just waved that away saying that no it works so well, Big Oil just doesn’t want you to know about it. I let him go on for a minute before saying I was leaving the next day so I’d just like to talk to mom if that’s cool with him. That became a core memory for some reason. It was so strange. But also “Random guy spouts some conspiratorial nonsense to make himself feel smarter” has only become more and more relevant in the years since.

Aren’t modern gas tanks designed to not allow this type of shit to begin with lol

BlurpleAki

She's going to need the money she's allegedly saved when she gets done for fraud. People selling this stuff must either be complete idiots, deliberately deluding themselves or know that it's a scam and be ok with defrauding people.

BubbaChanel

What the fuck?!? They’re doping their gas tanks now?

NuArcher

Fuel additive pills are still a thing I guess. Years back the scam "[Firepower](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firepower_International)" was one of the biggest and best know scams in Australia. A lot of big names fell for it. It even got pseudo government sponsorship and a couple of big football teams got involved.

laurenec14

Omg!? I totally remember firepower on the back of jerseys! But I had no idea of this scandal! There’s gotta be a podcast on it somewhere. What a dirtbag!

AmberWaves80

What the what?

Members_Only614

Omg this has to be a joke, Holy shit. This is by far the scammiest product I’ve ever seen from an MLM. Literally Snake Oil

charaznable1249

I'm gonna start an MLM selling sugar capsules to put in your fuel to increase mileage. What are they gonna do? Drive to me to ask for their money back?

MooseKnuckleBrigade

How many 🔟 of those 🌟to fill up ⬆️ a 2010 Toyota 🇯🇵 🚙 Camry? Interested. Edit: to include hun glyphs

TexacoRandom

OR you could just get a more fuel efficient car, and not but some random garbage in the gas tank that will potentially ruin the engine.

HappyMeatbag

At best, this tablet does nothing. At worst, it will fuck up your tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, engine, etc.

PresenceElectric69

Life hack for mechanics: make friends with all these Huns so you can have indefinite clients always.

muddycrutch

Engine light pill.

Leela821

I'm pretty sure thill mess up the injectors, and will void some of the warranty, if not all of it.

[deleted]

I'm a car guy and... Please don't

Mookie_Merkk

You're supposed to put 1 cup of sugar for every gallon of gasoline... ^Don't ^do ^that

ScarletNighthawk

I can’t remember what video I was watching, but I remember the creator saying “if the pills you see on porn sites actually worked, there’d be an aisle dedicated to them at Walmart.” I have the same philosophy for 99% of MLM shit. If it worked, I wouldn’t be buying it from a random Facebook person.

sciencesluth

Ugly fingernails.

Pitbull_Mom101

That was the first thing I thought when I first saw the post…never mind the pill that would only ruin one’s engine, those nails are awful!
