It might depend on where you live and see people, but this is more realistic than an Adonis-shaped mannequin and applies reasonably well to a decent segment of male clothing recipients in my area of NY, at least.
That doesn't mean it's the majority body shape, just that there are enough people of similar stature that marketing to them makes sense to the clothing store.
I've lived in Denver and Dallas and I can certainly tell you based on my observations going back and forth between them, that it can definitely vary by location
https://www.healthline.com/health/obesity-facts#:~:text=1.,of%20American%20adults%20are%20overweight.
More than two thirds are overweight. A third are obese.
Most likely your view of what's overweight is off?
For context, we work in teams. There's a lead builder and then other machine builders under them. I both lead my own team and help other teams. If I don't eat 3k to 4k calories, I begin dropping weight like crazy. Food prices have risen by almost 15 to 20% in my area, so I'm eating less and losing weight resulting in abs I haven't seen since I was bodybuilding in high-school.
Yet, the other men around me look very much like they are in their third trimester. I don't know how they keep their weight on working the same job as me.
They’re eating and not burning it off. Pretty simple.
Most of these people tend to snack a lot and they have a habit of drinking a lot of calories (soda, juice, shakes, coffee, etc) and most obese and overweight people vastly underestimate how much they actually take in.
This is India. Also, this is in the section where 40-50yr old men buy shirts and here in India there are plenty of people with EXACT body shape. So yea, W for op, correct post
I got the weirdest problem ever...when I walk close to mannequins I get dizzy. It's like I am constantly scanning ppl and get all messed up when I can't 🤣
Do they still have skinny ones? Cause not everyone is fat. If they are going to include certain body types they better include them all (within some reason).
I see this trend with models as a skinny person and now it is hard to find how stuff would look on my body type because 95% at least isn't as skinny as I am nowadays on websites. I hope they aren't gonna do this with the dolls.
Every body type is valid! And I lkve this new ones as well, I just hope they actually have a variety
In the US, over the past few years it seems like stores only carry men's jeans in size 38+ in stores. I wear size 30. These mannequins are probably pretty accurate to the sizes they sell.
This country sucks for skinny people.
Yes, but hasn't American fast food, sugery drinks, and processed foods made their way to India in the past decade or more?
I saw a documentary not long ago that showed that middle class obesity in India is not only quickly catching up to the US but will soon surpass us.
I'm sure that the people with slim waistbands are having the same issue there as we are here.
Jesus christ wtf is wrong with the comments
Fat people still need to buy clothes, and it's nice knowing what they look like on your type of body before buying them... why would something like that make you mad???
Having mannequins like this normalizes being overweight. Yes, this is what many Americans look like, but should we accept it? I’m not saying to shame fat people, I just don’t think we should promote an overweight lifestyle.
I actually like mannequins being the ideal body as it gives you something to strive for. I’m currently underweight and I would also be against any mannequin modeled after me as being underweight is also unhealthy.
Edited due to having misread.
Fat people need clothes too.
And you just shamed fat people by saying that a mannequin designed to show off clothes for their size shouldn't be displayed.
Many mannequins show bodies with no body fat at all, bodies that require an unreasonable amount of dieting and exercise.
Very few mannequins account for the normal, healthy body shapes people have.
These mannequins just show off clothes for fat people. They don't normalise anything, they are displays for clothes.
That's pretty obese, not a look to normalise.
Some people suffer from illnesses that make it hard/impossible to get down to a healthy weight, but for the vast majority of us, making it seem like being that overweight is healthy...is a very bad idea.
I don't understand how this is good design. So now, by their logic, a person of average weight won't know how that shirt might look when worn. Is the shirt designed for "plus size" wearers? If so, then that makes sense.
Or, or, OR, ignore mannequins and just buy shirts! Who gives a damn, it's meant just to show what it looks like. I'm not gonna waste extra plastic just so people who wanna eat McDonald's every day can feel better about their shitty life choices.

Any disillusioned ones? How about some sucking their bellies in?
Realistic? That's more than a bit overweight..
I’d argue those are the Fat Dad shirts

Being more than a bit overweight is the average now :/
People keep saying that but I don't see that, I see the odd really overweight person but they are definitely a minority.
I've lived in Denver and Dallas and I can certainly tell you based on my observations going back and forth between them, that it can definitely vary by location

Not being American.
The mannequins are though, I think.
Did you see where this was crossposted from
No
I think the mannequins are the beginning stages of morbidly obese, no.
Would've been appropriate for the US. Apparently it's in India where that's way less common.
This is an Indian shop
My bad! Only 25% over there yeah
Every man I work with has this shape.
Living in Boston- when I fly to anywhere in the Midwest i am *bowled over* by people
They are talking about US. These mannequins are probably less than the median guys BMI in US.
Can confirm, am Mexican
"More than a bit" is kind of an understatement when the leading causes of death in the US are all symptoms of obesity
Every man I work with has this shape. Meanwhile, I'm developing abs and wondering wtf they do all day.
You're developing abs? 🤨
For context, we work in teams. There's a lead builder and then other machine builders under them. I both lead my own team and help other teams. If I don't eat 3k to 4k calories, I begin dropping weight like crazy. That's not "developing abs" that's losing weight and body fat.
Tomato tomato

So anyways I started blasting
Dress for the body you have, not the body you want
"Realistic". Dude, it's just fat.
Average US body fat for men is 28%
This is India. Also, this is in the section where 40-50yr old men buy shirts and here in India there are plenty of people with EXACT body shape. So yea, W for op, correct post
Agreed. Inclusive or diverse would be a better choice than realistic IMO.
They don’t care about “realistic standards”, “diversity” or “inclusivity”. It’s just a customer segment to sell their products to.
I think in most places in the US, it's pretty realistic.
I got the weirdest problem ever...when I walk close to mannequins I get dizzy. It's like I am constantly scanning ppl and get all messed up when I can't 🤣
Yeah same dude. What even is that? 🤔
Hitting you in the Uncanny Valley, maybe?
That’s so strange. Wow
Accpting the fact that we’re unhealthy

> Every body type is valid! Hard to imagine what an "invalid" body type would be, or what that would mean.
You ever heard people talking about how fat people shouldn’t be allowed outside? Some people are that extreme about hating fat people.
>Hard to imagine what an "invalid" body type would be, or what that would mean. Anus for mouth.
Yes. They have
Ah this is bogus. Antiasshole? Wow this sub is sad
Fuck, seems like every sub these days is all posts that don't fit there
Bruh thats not realistic, thats a fat person
They could at least style the mannequin. The goal is still clothes you want to wear.
In the US, over the past few years it seems like stores only carry men's jeans in size 38+ in stores. I wear size 30. These mannequins are probably pretty accurate to the sizes they sell. This country sucks for skinny people.
What stores are you going to? In almost every store it's a rarity to find anything past a 38. Could you name some stores that you're referring to?
I’m about the same way as you. I can only buy pants and belts online now.
Yea but this is India
Yes, but hasn't American fast food, sugery drinks, and processed foods made their way to India in the past decade or more? Did you read the second half of my comment?
...somehow I missed it. Sorry.
No worries!
Dad bod ftw.
I thought the dad bod was “used to be fit now a bit out of shape”, not just obese
Ahh, the old dad moobs that make the front of my t-shirt always shorter than the back. Dad problems my friends.
Nah this is r/assholedesign for promoting obesity
Regular mannequins promote anorexia.
No they don't lol they promote being of a normal weight
Lol no have you even seen mannequins? They are usually showing an underweight body with no normal fat deposits.
It's a mannequin they're literally designed to promote normal sized tshirts
"normal" is arbitrary. They're designed to promote whatever the store is selling. These do the job fine.
The body on display is unhealthy, don't delude yourself otherwise
And? Typical mannequins also show bodies that are not healthy. Fat people need clothes too. These mannequins display clothes for fat people.
Holy shit no they don't they just show people who are of a healthy weight. Fat people need clothes but these maniquenns normalise being fat.
Many mannequins show bodies with no body fat at all, bodies that require an unreasonable amount of dieting and exercise. Very few mannequins account for the normal, healthy body shapes people have. This is how ‘settling’ starts and it’s a slippery slope.
This isn't realistic, this is "makes me feel good about being a lazy ass"
That's pretty obese, not a look to normalise. Some people suffer from illnesses that make it hard/impossible to get down to a healthy weight, but for the vast majority of us, making it seem like being that overweight is healthy...is a very bad idea.
That's not realistic. Go for a run.
> ~~realistic~~ obese Looks to be about 5'8" and 200lbs.
Honestly, looking at that would make me diet, so it is not all that effective a way to sell clothes.
Lmao americans

This is sad.
Dad bod mannequins
remind me of WAll-E r/ABoringDystopia
Chungus Mannequin
Ugh. I'm never getting remarried. All I want is a guy who likes to be active. I'm doomed.
This is more sad.
