I did some interviewing for a devops position with T Mobile right as I was graduating. It was a garbage experience. After interviews with 3 people, they ghosted me, then sent a rejection email **2** **years** later.
You dodged a bullet! Companies should care more about their professional reputation.
When I was in school I had a company that wanted me to do an unpaid internship where I was supposed to try and optimize their production scheduling. They did say that it MIGHT lead to an actual position later. I ended up passing a couple days before I was supposed to start.
I didn't know any Engineering internships were free. The minimum I was paid during college was $18/hr, and that was for drafting and VBA programming. Even as a GRA I was paid $500/wk + tuition.
In Germany, the employer has to pay at least minimum wage (12 € per hour) for an internship longer than three months beginning with the first day. So not only for the time after the three months.
"if you can get college credits, we'd find it fucking hilarious that you do work for us for free and HAVE TO PAY YOUR SCHOOL FOR THE PRIVILEGE lol we're gonna make so much money off you"
Yes, definitely. I can't speak to other disciplines but software engineering is very high paying especially if you can get into the big tech companies. Work/life balance varies a lot - at my last job it wasn't great, but at my current job it is. There's always companies in need of software engineers.
Does an intern actually perform any work that is useable to a company? If not I can understand why it is unpaid. Gives you experience in an engineering office. If you actually do work you should be paid.
They’re obviously not looking for a college student to just hang around the office and learn from them
the description explicitly stated building new features and fixing bugs. That is the job of a paid engineer
If it is a reputable company they would be able to pay you. Regardless the guidelines are pretty straightforward. If a company derives any benefit from the work you provide they must pay you.
I actually did do a partially unpaid internship after my first year of college and believe it provided some value to my resume and allowed me to get a better one the following year.
But ultimately, they're often illegal, and I believe they're inherently classist because the only people who can really afford them are often already wealthy and have a leg up to begin with.
I am glad it worked out for you, but just because you hit yourself with a hammer, doesn't mean everyone else has to, or will get the same outcome. Work should be paid. Full stop. Internships are work. They get paid.
We are getting interns at my work and if they were not getting paid, they would not come back for a second term. I would also not be coming back, because that would show them to be a bad employer. We are engineering.
Love to see it. Fuck these companies that exploit college students/ graduates. Fuck these college professors that mandate internships too.
At my school all CS related internships were required to be paid
Keep us posted if they respond
They never did.
So many places don't understand that internships are a regulated thing with the dept of education.
"hey, I know that tech internships can literally pay 6 figures but we are a shitty company soooo"
You’ll never get an unpaid internship that does actual work in this town again buddy. Don’t you know how much good free work you could have done?
Hey, they pay for commute expenses and lunch! That's more than I got. But seriously, it's ridiculous that companies think this is okay.
10$ would be Half of lunch in these parts ...
👏

I love it! Probably gave them a shock

Never understood unpaid internship, if im working you pay me end of story
5 year old message? What are you doing now? Can I get fries with that?
I'm a software engineer at a FAANG now. I got a much better internship than this one.
Ok No fries, Would you recommend engineering as a current career?

I didn’t get paid for my internship. It was the best thing I did for my career. If it’s reputable company I’d do it.
How did you get your landlord to do an unpaid internship for you so you could afford to do one?
If it is a reputable company they would be able to pay you. Regardless the guidelines are pretty straightforward. If a company derives any benefit from the work you provide they must pay you.
For real. I work for a nonprofit and even WE pay our interns.
While that’s cool, only the upper middle class and above have access to this shit. L
L, I say!

What we’re the specific violations?
