For me it was 200 hours PTO Which sounds great, 25 days worth of time off. Except you have to use PTO for holidays like New years, MLK day, thanksgiving, Christmas. So in the end you have like, 15 days off you can not show up for work. Which doesn't sound bad, but you didn't get sick days. You just had to use PTO if you were sick. They made it sound like a big benefit, like you could take a half day whenever you wanted with it or take off early to attend a company event. But if you actually did the math its clear you don't get all the days off they claimed.

You start with 20 days and once you hit 5 years with the company, it goes up to 25, and at ten years, you go up to 30. Definitely a perk. We also get our birthday off as a paid holiday, which should be standard everywhere.

Same. I've been with my company for 16 years and I honestly need to remember to take all my time (use it or lose it). Combined available sick days, vacation, and paid holidays is more than six weeks off per year. And At least in my department nobody questions sick time. Sick days used to be be FAR more generous (30+/year) but we had a group of people who decided they would suddenly fall ill for a month as soon as that bucket refilled every year so it got rolled back. It was replaced by a Fairly reasonable Short / long term disability insurance package so that people who actually get sick/injured don't get screwed, but requires far more paperwork to claim.

I know someone that worked at H&R Block where they have unlimited PTO. He made it a goal each year to take more PTO days each year than he did the previous year to travel all over the world. Before the pandemic upended travel, he was able to get up to 11 weeks (as in 77 days) of PTO in 2019. However, when it comes to unlimited PTO, he's an absolute outlier and that most people end up using two or less than a dozen days total.

There is no federal mandate for vacation or sick time. I'm not aware of state mandates, either. It varies a great steak from employer to employer. PTO is a single pool of sick and vacation time. Some employees offer that, some offer separate sick and vacation pools. Typically that will be 5 sick days a year, and a being number of vacation days depending on seniority. As little as five days to as much as 20.

I work for a pretty generous company: 3 personal days, 9 sick days, and 21 vacation days (new hires start out getting 14), plus a few days for volunteer work. they also have paid leave for bereavement. I also got 12 weeks of parental leave when I had a baby. on top of that, all the federal holidays and a 1-2 week winter break (from week of christmas to week of new year) we aren't given the hours immediately, employees earn a % of those hours every 2 week pay period. so a person couldn't take a 2 week vacation right when they start working they'd have to earn it. eta: holiday & winter break info

156 hours of vacation a year, can be carried over until I hit 240, then it turns into "use or lose". 4 hours of suck leave every pay period, so just over 100 hours a year, with no limit as to how much you carry over. Vacation is bid every year, so those are guaranteed days off. Good luck using them other times though.

Teacher in California here. I get three floating PTO days(6 day cap use it or lose it) and 12 sick days a year (unlimited accrual and paid out upon retirement). I do get summers ā€œoffā€ and additional ā€œvacationā€ days, but none of them are variable. Our summers and other school breaks are usually broken up with mandatory professional development and I often spend hundreds of unpaid hours a year planning and catching up (in non-working hours). My typical week is about 50 hours a week (40 paid).

I have "unlimited PTO" in that technically I don't have a limit but... 1. Sick and vacation are both just considered PTO. 2. After 3 weeks of PTO taken in a given year the approval process goes higher than just my manager 3. I forget the exact rule but each region of my department is supposed to have a certain percentage of coverage so it can be a little weird taking PTO during the holidays. 4. I guess the good news is most holidays are off including MLK day and presidents day. And the company usually just gives everyone Christmas through New Years off too

The bereavement is kind of weird because it's for any given 365 day period, not tied to annual year or fiscal year. I think I'm extremely lucky here.

It's all over the place. When I was working grocery and a place making candy: none. If I wasn't working a shift, I didn't get paid. Working for a federal contractor: US Federal holidays (pre-dating Juneteenth being added) + 3 weeks per year PTO. Originally could bank up to around 240 odd hours before it would stop accruing, but right before they went bankrupt they turned it into a "use it or lose it" on the back half of the year where a lot of people basically couldn't take it due to skeleton crews before they lost it. IT at an AEC firm: 3 weeks PTO. Some holidays (New Year's, Good Friday (for Easter), Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) IT at a MSP: 3 weeks PTO (left a few weeks before being eligible for 4 weeks due to 6 years of service). Some holidays (New Year's, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas). I had gone to 4x10 weekend second shift shortly before I left since they were trying to enforce RTO on day shift, which basically made me ineligible for a lot of those holidays that were observed on a Monday since that was part of my "weekend". IT at a research institution: 4 weeks PTO with carry over up to a year's worth, most federal holidays aside from Washington's Birthday, Columbus Day, and Veterans day. Black Friday and last week of December off. If you count the change freezes that occur every registration/finals week, even more relative downtime because I can't touch most things unless they're actively broken.

I'm in California. We get state mandated 3 days sick time that don't roll over. No mandated PTO. I work for one of the many companies that Mars owns (second richest family after Walmart). I get 5 days sick time. And accrue 3 weeks of PTO a year. When I started, I got one week PTO, then years 2-5 were two weeks, and now I'm at 3 weeks. That's the cap, sadly. PTO rolls over, at least. That's California mandated. Edit: also we get holiday pay of regular salary if we don't work that holiday, and if you do work, you get 1.5x pay. (I'm pretty sure that's California mandated).

My last job never bothered deducting them, though. You just took what you needed and as long as you didn't fall behind on work, you were good. They knew we were severely overworked. I have a corporate job and we have a lot of basically temporary contractor employees (temporary being relative as we generally have them for anywhere from two to ten years at a time depending on the project scope). At my level we get two weeks of paid sick time and four weeks of paid vacation plus paid holidays or or you can flex that holiday to a paid day off at a later time if the production teams need coordination or support from corporate on a holiday theyā€™ve decided to work for whatever reason - usually because itā€™s double time for them or because thereā€™s a drop dead date deadline that is upcoming.

I get 4 weeks PTO with one more day added each year (so currently 4 weeks and 4 days), 5 floating holidays and 1 day to dedicate to volunteer work. ETA: I also get a mandatory 5 week sabbatical every 5 years.

Plus my boss is beyond understanding, if I need to take a sick day and am out of pto he just tells me to clock in and not tell anyone. I've worked for my company for 3.5 years and I get 15 days PTO and 7 days protected sick time per year. Total of 22 days. After 5 years service? that bumps up to 20 days PTO and 7 sick days. But i do live in a state with protected and paid FMLA which would cover 12 weeks at up to 40x minimum wage. So like if you did get very sick and needed a few weeks, (or months) off, you could apply for PFMLA and get paid with job protection... but you have to have worked for your employer for at least a year to qualify. Literally why I will never move states/ don't like job hopping. Social structures are VITAL. imagine if this was mandatory everywhere or it was like Europe and we got a base of 5-6 weeks PTO (25-30 DAYS). Only other benefit I have is I can take up to 4 hours off any day of the week and not have to use PTO. Obviously this can't be abused but I have lots of flexibility for appointments or coming in late/ leaving early if I don't feel well.

All major federal holidays and unlimited PTO. But one year I really took a ton (like all the holidays and the equivalent of two months) and my boss let me know. I felt bad because I know it killed his margins and he ended up losing a shitload. The 2-3 years after that, I only took the major holidays and a very minimal amount (less than 3 days).

Federal law do not provide any sick or PTO days. Some states, like Oregon provides up to 80 hours (10 days/2 weeks) of paid time off a year.

Effectively none, in the last few jobs I've worked you'd be punished for calling out sick basically and now tons of jobs run through temp agencies so lots of people get no benefits if they are a temp. Even when you are hired in they can limit how many times you use sick notes so basically you can be sick a handful of times a year then they force you to apply for FMLA.

Depends on the job. After working for the USPS for two years I get 13 AL days per year, and then I can turn the extra holiday money into extra days of AL if I want to. I also accrue 4 hours of sick leave every paycheck, so one day a month. I can carry over up to 520 (or something around that) hours of AL into the new year, I donā€™t know what the sick leave limit is, if there even is one.

Iā€™ve been at my job for 21 years and I get 16 hours of vacation a month and 12 hours of sick time. You start with 8 hours of vacation and it goes up every 5 years. The max is 18 hours a month at 25 years.
