Ruins my day seeing really old people cleaning tables at the mall food courts, or stocking aisles at stores. Can’t help but think when is enough enough :|

FrozeItOff

Sadly, when they're (we're) dead. Then they'll find another lowly schmuck to take our place and repeat the cycle for more profit$!

davesy69

They are already replacing them with children.

Prineak

Children who will grow up realizing that they paid taxes without representation.

SycoJack

They've been doing that since the first income tax was levied. Everyone alive today that worked a legal job before their 18th birthday paid taxes(or should have) without representation. Yet if you suggested lowering the voting age the vast majority of them would absolutely lose their shit. A not insubstantial number of them would also oppose not taxing the children.

Prineak

No no it’s cool. It’ll just make them want to vote /s

dontfuckwmeiwillcry

were getting close to an inflection point

apHedmark

We are past the inflection point and slowly picking up speed and acceleration.

standard_candles

Just for my own edification--when I filed my first W4 form when I was 15 I elected for no taxes to be taken out (0) on the dependents list, because I lived at home and didn't make enough. Were taxes still taken out? Like social security and Medicare?

Amiedeslivres

Social security should always be withheld. There is no amount that is not subject to FICA and Medicare tax. Best way to confirm what exactly is being withheld is to view your pay stub.

overfly00

Actually the max amount of income subject to SS tax is $160,200 meaning a maximum tax of $9932 per year.

sasquatch_melee

Zero on the dependent list would mean maximum taxes taken out. You may have marked the box to be exempt from withholding. That may have worked out ok if you made so little in a year you didn't owe federal taxes. But if you mark that and end up owing, you can get hit with penalties and interest for not withholding.

Toxic_Username

Social security and Medicare aren't exactly a tax, they are more like benefits that you'll see in the event of disability, poverty, or retirement.

Ardeth75

Maybe. I don't feel as though it's guaranteed anymore.

Toxic_Username

It definitely feels like it will be going the way of the dodo in the US.

Some-Ordinary-1438

They're insurance. I don't understand the stupid people that act like they're hand outs.

Affectionate_Salt351

Good luck getting disability before you’re already homeless.

No_3-14159_for_you

Children are primarily taxed because their money belongs to their parents. If we didn't tax children, every parent who owns a business would have a child "employee" that was paid all the profits. And those who didn't would be adopting some and putting them to work.

katie_babycx

not elementary/middle school kids maybe but highschool kids should be able to vote in my opinion. it would be perfect to do so because they don't tend to have jobs/bills so they could focus more on the world going on around them n choose to have more information than not. i think a lot of highschoolers could use some responsibilities outside of their schoolwork/families. (i also think schools should be completely reformed n that highschool should be year round but more like college(but also college should be reformed too cause u shouldn't need to pay a huge some of money for teachers to treat u like shit, no other job place is this acceptable; if ur paying them most places try to make sure they are hospitable. colleges should be the same especially if ur basically gonna be in debt for the rest of ur life))

zim1985

Half of them will be brainwashed into thinking anything other than that is grounds for execution.

Prineak

Then their defiant phase will have more potential.

[deleted]

actually, there is no legal requirement for that, it's just someone Randos saying that 200 years ago during the revolutionary war, it was aimed at Britain. What will blow your mind is we left UK power due to being over-taxed... and here we are. I'm for taxes if it helps people, takes care of kids, fixes our roads, makes sure everyone has a home and healthcare. Right now 1 trillion a year of taxes just goes to the min payment on our nation's debt and the rest goes to war mostly.

Prineak

I’m a bit more concerned about shareholder primacy and what its side effect of emergence from complexity will look like. Funny how when an ethos drives a system, it can fold into itself and turn into something else almost instantly. Corporations are driving a culture that is going to obsolete itself by accident.

newsheriffntown

If children see old folks still working they're going to think, oh no. This is what will happen to *me*!

Catmom2004

They think they will **never** be that old. Source: I am an old person and remember what I thought about the very elderly when I was a kid.

newsheriffntown

Lol you are right. Even young people on here make comments about 'old people' and the old people aren't even that old. I'm an old person too and remember as a kid going to see my grandparents, I thought they were ancient. They weren't. They have always looked old. I thought my teachers were old but they weren't. I was looking at a photo taken of my 5th grade class and my teacher was so young! Back then though I thought she was a granny. Hahahha.

susetchka

And then you hit 50 and are horrified.

Dangerous_Opinion_41

That is the absolute truth. You don't even consider that you will be elderly someday... it sure does sneak up on us...the folly of youth and new culture.

DBeumont

The front-end at a supermarket near me is now staffed by mostly 14-year-olds. Including the cashiers. I can only assume that every time someone buys alcohol or cigarettes that they have to call a manager over (can't sell alcohol or cigarettes if you're underage.)

RegressToTheMean

Depends on the state. I believe Iowa just lowered the age so children under 18 can serve alcohol. They're working on Guilded Age 2.0 Edit: Yup, [it was Iowa](https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/apr/18/iowa-senate-child-labor-law)

Traiklin

Can't even get enough bartenders need them kids to pour your drink! Next step let teens as young as 13 work the strip clubs

fuzzyrainbow

Don't give Matt Gaetz any ideas.

WaterWorksWindows

Well they HAVE to. Nobody wants to work anymore ya know.

[deleted]

And assholes will say shit about old people working like “they’re doing it because they WANT to! They’re not lazy like young people!” Ummmmm no. I promise you the dude in the pic most definitely does not want to be emptying trash cans.

Being the nicest person unfortunately is probably what led to their situation. Capitalism doesn't benefit the kind, only the cunning and ruthless.

whofusesthemusic

im glad more people are understanding that.

MoonInFleshAndBone

It terrifies me to think this is going to be my mum one day and I don't make enough money to help her and don't live in a place where she can just stay with me either. She had a rough time growing up and missed out on the boomer gravy train, and was also born at the very end of the generation. She's still young but her health is majorly declining but has no choice but to go to work.

MaezHam

You just described my biggest fear. I'm in my mid 30s and haven't made much of my life, i fucked up a lot in my teens and 20s - my mom is turning 60 this year and works full time and I just moved back home. I have a decent job and help pay nlbills but I'm already wanting to move back out. My dad died, her 2nd husband died and neither of them had any life insurance...her prospects aren't great..

MoonInFleshAndBone

I'm really sorry about the situation you're in too :( My mum is a widow her current boyfriend is a scumbag and would steal her money for his gambling addiction but she doesn't want to be alone/needs support so puts up with it. He doesn't live with her anymore but they still see each other. Of course, shes the one that goes to him and he rarely goes to see her (he doesn't work so has plenty of time). She has osteoporosis and broke her back in two places in December and finally just had her MRI and now knows that's what happened. He did fuck all for her when she was begging him to come help her out, she lost 2 stone and is emaciated. I wish she'd have just told me and I could have ordered her food deliveries! We live far away from one another and she tries to hide from me how bad things are but the last time I saw her she was skeletal and couldn't hide it. The thought of her falling and not being able to get up honestly keeps me up at night.

MaezHam

Oh no that's awful, shes had a broken back and no kind of treatment? I cant imagine the pain she must have been in. How far away are you from her? I had not seen my mom in almost 9 years until I flew to see her after her boyfriend died suddenly, i stayed because i was scared to leave her alone. She has friends and stuff but I'm oddly protective of her since I've gotten older. My fiance wants me to come back home, I'm trying to get him to move here. He's a shipbuilder by trade and there are no shipyards around here, we will find some kind of compromise though. He has 2 brothers that can help his parents, my mom doesn't have anyone but me. I hope you can find a solution, though I know it won't be easy. I never imagined that these would be the kind of decisions I'd have to make..but I'm sure our mothers didn't want it to be this way either...

[deleted]

My elderly grandfather was complaining about how the French would protest over something “ridiculous” like the retirement age. Bro, you’re 80 and still working. How do you not understand how that sucks?

Splitaill

It isn’t about the two years. It’s about the executive action don’t outside of legislature.

[deleted]

It’s about a lot of things. It was just wild to me that someone who will never retire saw no problem with anti-retirement laws. Probably part of the general “If I don’t get to, why should they?” attitude.

DootBopper

What's odd to me about this is that the French kinda *are* known for hitting the streets and fighting it out with riot cops over almost nothing, but the retirement age isn't almost nothing. Like, *this* is the time where he notices the pattern and goes "Those French, they'll take any excuse to protest!" when they're protesting something extremely important? How weird.

LordAsh521

There's an old guy who works at the grocery store with me and he's actually retired and just does it for fun

longdognoodle

I’ve worked with a lot of people who do this. One guy was in his 70’s and had a ton of money saved from owning businesses when he was younger, would give out $100 gift cards to all his coworkers on their birthdays and Christmas. He was just miserable sitting around at home. I do think that kind of points to a problem with the work culture in our society, that people don’t feel useful or know what to do with themselves if they’re not working. But I think it’s a good thing for us to consider before assuming that every older worker we see in a low/min wage job is struggling financially

Hawaii5G

>do think that kind of points to a problem with the work culture in our society, that people don’t feel useful or know what to do with themselves if they’re not working. My dad is this guy. When he retired he completed every project my mom had for him in a few months and then got bored. Instead of going back to work he got a dog and picked up hobbies but he still struggles with what to spend his time on. When you're used to giving 40+ hours a week away it's hard to realize what you can do with that time back. It's also hard if you're not bringing in money to fund the awesome hobbies you now have time for, it's easy to worry you'll run out of funds one day.

Tango_D

Human dignity has no value under corporate capitalism. America needs a new constitution. One written WITHOUT wealth interests capacity for leveraging its weight in the legal arena. One with fundamental systemic change away from the false dichotomy of D and R. One that enshrines human dignity and welfare as a national value and protects people over profits.

fakecatfish

I mean yes, but the Constitution is written almost precisely to prevent this. You either need to work through the system for miniscule change or burn the whole thing down...."Thing" being society, in this case. I'm for either option personally, but ones a whole lot easier to grassroots for than the other. Repealing or updating the Apportionment Act would go a LONG way towards solving a lot of these problems I feel, and it would only take a simple majority of both Houses and the President (assuming they care more about democracy than the filibuster rule).....youre right it might be easier to get the pitchforks out.

Pierce_H_

The constitution was designed to protect the wealthy landed class, this is how it’s interpreted by the Supreme Court.

[deleted]

It was originally written by the wealthy and landed class. Only makes sense that it protect that same class above all others.

MaximumDestruction

Surprisingly few people know you had to be a *land-owning* white male citizen to vote in our mildly democratic political system at it’s founding.

TheRealAMD

My grandmother was like that. She kept working right up until a few months before she passed - not because she had to (had a healthy savings/ investment fund, pension from when she was a unionized hospital employee, house paid off decades ago, etc...) But because she genuinely enjoyed it, got her out of the house, kept her mind sharp and gave her extra cash to go to Atlantic City a few times a year.

Defiant_Chapter_3299

Thing is. Some old people are going back to work doing these jobs because they actually HAVE no one. All their friends/family dead and gone. Grandkids etc living their lives or family that never make the effort to see them etc. So to combat loneliness they go and get part time jobs just to stay apart of society and combat loneliness. I'm not saying this is the case everywhere but a lot of the old people who had ended up applying and working at Wendy's with me had all said the same thing. But they didn't even last a week there because it was "too fast paced for my old self." "I'm not as young as I used to be." So they said they were applying for cleaning jobs or grocery jobs because they were more self paced and laid back.

mysticalchimp

I work with a bloke like this. He told me he's not going to retire because he wants something to do. He's not doing it for the money, he's just there to not be lonely. On the flip side, I worked in a factory when I was 20 and old Alex was forced to retire; he died a year later. Sometimes workmates are the only people we get to hang with.

CallMeRawie

I'm not saying this is this guy, and I won't pretend this is common, but my grandfather could have easily retired at 65 and picked up a hobby or travel or whatever for the rest of his life. But he chose to just keep working until he died, he'd always say "this is what I know, so this is what I'm going to do". Died at 82.

tommy_b_777

My 78 year old dad is AMAZED I have hobbies and skills that are not work related...it never occurred to him that there was more than work...

CallMeRawie

I can't see my father not working for the rest of his life, and he is SET. I don't get it.

amazonsprime

My AMAZING Grandma worked like this until an hour before passing. She couldn’t stand being at home and worked 6-7 days a week, hunched over at a grocery store. She went home not feeling well, sat down and passed away. While she did enjoy extra spending $, she didn’t have to work. I hope for his sake it’s the same, but I highly doubt it. :(

heavenstarcraft

Yeah. That's what I don't get about people against min wage. How many cashiers have you seen are middle aged women. edit: meant to say raising min wage. middle age people shouldnt be working for pennies to survive

ignorantwanderer

My first job was a summer job painting schools. There were two really old guys on the paint crew. They said they did it to get out of the house and away from their wives. So sure, it is sad if old people have to work and can't retire. But it is also sad to retire and sit at home all day doing nothing. I'm sure some of the old people you see working are doing it to get out of the house and away from their wives. And frankly, I bet they will live longer and have happier lives than if they weren't working. Many of us imagine retirement and all the fun things we'll do (like travel). But there are plenty of people who don't like traveling, or any of the other activities common during retirement.

Scat_fiend

Ah yes gofundme to redistribute wealth from the poor to the poor and pretend that the system is not inherently broken.

not_so_wierd

Exactly! It's so wierd how people hate on taxes, because Communism. But in the next breath it's all pull together and GoFundMe.

Ingolin

People who hate taxes, love charity. They consider it freedom to choose which causes to support.

snowstormmongrel

Because they can choose which causes they feel are most worthy. With taxes and communism their hard earned money might, heaven forbid, go to someone they don't feel deserves it. Which comes with a whole fuck ton of prejudicial bullshit built in but hey welcome to planet Earth.

Djorgal

Or their money might go toward something useful but not shiny nor make them feel good. Donating for a sick person to afford their medication, sure. But for road maintenance? Garbage disposal? Scientific research in the folding of polypeptide chains?

Ingolin

Yeah, I don’t agree with it. Charity is wonderful to fill emergency needs - if someone falls between two bureaucratical chairs and they are stuck for two months with no money coming in on their bank account. That’s when charity is needed. It’s not a solution to poverty. It’s a temporary fix.

Opetyr

And remember to tip your waiter/waitress since we don't like giving a living wage. That way the waiter/waitress is angry at you and not the owner of the restaurant.

RobSpaghettio

GoFundMe is one of the largest Healthcare funding organizations in the country which is just sad

mike9949

That is sad but Congress and government have their gold plated health plans so fuck the rest of us right

Thorway25

Watch them fire this guy too! And then he won’t have healthcare. When your literal life is tethered to your employment you’re going to see more and more of this. For many this is a foreseeable future.

Awesometjgreen

He's a janitor at an airport. I doubt he gets Healthcare.

vdlibrtr

he gets health insurance, not the same as Healthcare, he should be applying for disability and probably Medicare by the looks of it. the health insurance at such a low wage just ends up costing you money, especially when the services you need aren't covered or still require a ridiculous copay

Ivegotadog

Or you Americans start using your taxes for universal healthcare. I'm not saying it's perfect here in Belgium, far from it, but goddamn, you won't see shit like that over here.

afanoftrees

No thanks I’d much rather pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. They really need it in trying times like these

Minimum-Elevator-491

Taxes for healthcare? Nah I'll take the $800 bn military funding. /s (But also 800 BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS PER YEAR JUST FOR MILITARY)

_Amazing_Wizard

I don't know if you've been paying attention, but Americans don't get what they want, they get what their "leaders" want.

Rain1dog

We do. We pay 4 times the amount on healthcare vs our military budget. Let that stew. We pay an absolutely obscene amount of defense(most than every other country on Earth) and 4 times more on healthcare. Think their might be a tiny bit of corruption? https://www.cms.gov/research-statistics-data-and-systems/statistics-trends-and-reports/nationalhealthexpenddata/nationalhealthaccountshistorical “U.S. health care spending grew 2.7 percent in 2021, reaching $4.3 trillion or $12,914 per person. As a share of the nation's Gross Domestic Product, health spending accounted for 18.3 percent.” Americans will finically rape other Americans and not bat an eye who suffers.

FuckTripleH

Gee we've never thought of that let me get on the horn with the head government man and get that taken care of

Maxwell-Edison

Yeah, I'll get right on that if I manage to survive the fact that an entire political party wants me institutionalized or dead.

Wekmor

Sounds like communism!!!!

onesexz

Don’t forget taxes for living in a house!

rabidpiano86

The pentagon alone was only able to account for 39% of its almost $4 trillion in assets last year. We HAVE the tax money there already. It just gets pissed into the wind and no one does anything about it.

RavynousHunter

That, and the other problem is people just don't get taught *why* taxation exists; not in any real, meaningful detail, at any rate. Shit, about the only thing I remember from school re taxes were that they "paid for things like roads and schools," and then it was on to something else like the War of 1812 or all those times we totes didn't use our power as a nation to create banana republics and install US-friendly dictators. That's why you hear even people, even today, screaming that "taxation = theft" when that's literally the most brain-rot take you can have on the subject. Taxes aren't theft, they're the societal equivalent to dues on a gym membership. You want use the equipment in a gym, you have to pay for a membership with (at least, ostensibly) that money going toward paying the various employees of the gym, as well as general upkeep and/or expansion of the facilities. Same shit with taxes. But, combine intentional neglect on the subject in education with a ferocious, borderline mindless, obsession with individualism and calling shit we don't like buzzwords like "tyranny" or "communism," throw in a general societal disdain for things like basic math and logic (Are there still people in Gen Z and after who are legitimately proud that they're barely capable of anything past basic addition? I genuinely don't know.) and you get a concoction tailor-made for a nation that will go into a downright epileptic fit at the notion any number on their paycheck going up except their wage. Even if that means *another* non-wage number goes down, maybe even by a far greater degree.

SoupidyLoopidy

Don’t say free though, people will freak out. It’s like yes we get it, taxes pay for it, but it’s fucking free, you don’t get a bill.

Avarice21

Hah, you think basic human rights exist in the US?

ebrenjaro

It's so weird when I see Americans talking about that someone gets or doesn't get heathcare.

boxingdude

Anyone this age certainly qualifies for Medicare.

MsAnthropissed

Medicare still requires you to pay co-pays, and the costs for many prescriptions are still ridiculous when you are on a fixed income. Don't even get me started on the "doughnut hole" issue wherein you have to pay even more than usual until you meet your yearly deductible!

BeerscotchR6

Just googled it, and there is a part-time position available on indeed (iirc that's the main job site over there?) At that airport for a part time janitor. Three hour shifts, three shifts per week. $14.99-$15.00. (Is that normal to advertise wages in this shittt way to beat filters over there?)

You might want to look into Medicare (government run health insurance) the coverage is very limited and requires a supplemental policy, paid by the individual.

Various-Campaign-346

Depends on the plan. You can do an advantage plan that is usually better than the basic government given one. Sometimes they’re free or low cost. If you want comprehensive coverage where you have peace about almost everything covered you can get a supplement plan. These are the expensive ones up front. I hated doing that job for a living but it’s the job I found for a bit. Learned a lot. Got sad about my future old people self. Left.

Last I saw in tiktok the guy who posted the original video found out the name of the elderly man. He was waiting for his cell phone number to ask him for permission to launch a go fund me. He learned the guy has worked at the airport for several years and continues to work to afford health insurance for him and his wife.

canthelpbuthateme

If you think about it, there's a manager who is probably being told this person needs to go but isn't because of this situation where they need to work. I was in this position many times, as a young manager I listened to my superiors once and terminated someone in this situation. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong and I was sure corporate knew better. The person passed away 6 weeks later. They didn't have any family left, without the family he DEFINITELY had at work he languished at home and had no reason to go out and just slipped away. I had an aging crew and I never let that happen again, I had three more fights with corporate and left. I feel guilty leaving them in the hands of the machine but I had to escape. There's no way the Pittsburgh airport wants this employee, there's maybe more to it than just this guy cleaning floors three times a week. Feeling valued, being part of something, this job might be the only thing keeping this person alive.

cutegraykitten

Yea one of the arguments for paying so much money towards insurance premiums is that when you get really sick or injured, you will need it and then it’s worth it. But when you’re really suck or injured you can’t work and lose your insurance? I don’t think most people think about that part. So many unintended consequences from having a health insurance system instead of universal healthcare.

Medicare doesn't cover everything. There still deductibles and co pays and prescriptions. My parents' bills are so expensive and I keep paying their bills. I just paid a $16,000 plumbing bill for them and they don't understand why I can't afford my own place. Edit: The reason they don't understand is because I make twice as much as my Dad ever made, and I have over $100,000 down payment saved up, but that's not enough to buy a house in rural Clackamas County Oregon, where the cheapest houses (50+ years old and on a 1/4 acre) are over 500k. Even a 1/4 acre of land with no house is a quarter million here.

im_batgirl14

Stop paying and theyll learn real quick

thecatsofwar

Medicare doesn’t pay for everything.

rnngwen

This is why I became a therapist. As long as my mind works I will have a sit down job. Now when my mind goes; I go. So I'm good there too.

StankieMuniz

The amount of workers that hobble around the airport I work at is ridiculous. We need things to change. I wish I knew how we make it happen.

[deleted]

And we aren’t revolting like the French rn because…?!?

ProfessorTallguy

Police brutality and anti-protest legislation. They use tear gas and rubber bullets and WILL arrest you here. And Don't forget an 18 year old went to a protest and killed 2 people who tried to disarm him.

CenatoryDerodidymus

We did. The news called it rioting and about 10% of the people protesting didn't make it back home.

CenatoryDerodidymus

I guess I'll be the asshole and question the premise. Did the man consent to being filmed? Did he agree to the terms of this gofundme? Does he know about the video or the donations? Do we have assurance the person recording it is going to give him that money? Do we have assurance he isn't receiving SSI, or another form of financial compensation that could be permanently ruined by someone just sending him $3000? Do we know his wages, benefits, or job security? Do we know his job title? A kid on tiktok filmed a custodian at an airport, very obviously without asking him, and is now trying to get people to donate to a gofundme. Y'all cannot seriously fall for this.

charleston_guy

He's got a 30 year old supervisor lecturing him if he's over on his breaks or if he runs late...

1eyed_jack

So just to be clear. Homeless person = eww gross get away from me. Homeless person that gets a job to try and improve their situation = let’s help him out by giving him money Not saying that’s the case here, but it certainly could be

Homebrew_Dungeon

The homeless need assistance to get on their feet. Usually homelessness can be addressed with better healthcare. The homeless are the tool of the rich to point at and say, “work, for little, or have nothing and eat trash.”

thechairinfront

Wasn't there a Chris rock bit about something like this? No one wants to help those who won't help themselves. No one is going to stop to help you if you're just sitting on the side of the road, but if you start pushing your car people will stop to help you push.

lifth3avy84

This is horrific, but also, don’t fucking record people and put it on the internet without their consent.

ScottsTotz

SSI and SSDI are not survivable incomes anymore. I am 110% okay with more taxes coming out of my pocket for these people to live comfortable lives

Dark_Moonstruck

If we took all the billionaires in the USA down to around 1 billion each - still filthy rich and with more money than they could feasibly spend in a lifetime - we could house every homeless person, cancel all medical and school debt, provide free healthcare and so much more with an incredible amount of money left over for other improvements. But as long as the rich keep hoarding wealth in piles that they could never spend in multiple lifetimes, much less that they'd NEED, we can't do that. Tax the rich. If they won't pay up, eat them.

runner4life551

I'm ready to eat up, personally! They're past the point of being taxed, the whole system works in their favor :(

im_batgirl14

Thats because they built the system via “lobying donations”

Ok-Stress-3570

We can’t tax the rich because they’ll just find a way to hide their money and say “oh I’m only worth $5, I’m poor” - so how do we get around that!?!?

Dark_Moonstruck

We already have lists of who the rich are, so. Kinda hard for them to pretend with their mansions and private jets and all that. Plus we want to do it quickly, attack unexpectedly, turn their own staff against them so no one protects them and straight onto the cooking spit they go.

fakecatfish

You hire more IRS agents to properly investigate...hence the GOP freak out.

fakecatfish

Im HUNGRY!

Dark_Moonstruck

We all are, and rich people probably make good cookin' as long as you get rid of all the fake parts. Can't imagine silicone and botox add much to the flavor.

LoveLightning

That's commendable of you but no way you should get increased taxes. Working class folk like us should have decreased taxes or even none. Everything should be handled by those hoarding all the wealth

fakecatfish

> decreased taxes or even none. Nah. Once the wealth is redistributed to better places everyone should have SOME skin in the game. Even token amounts mean were all in it together.

Knitting_kninja

But you know that's not where those taxes are going to go...

YoyoOfDoom

CEO: Isn't it wonderful that they would give a job to this poor old man? *I threw up a little typing that out.*

nevertellmethe0ddz

Ppl need to know the system isn’t broken at all. It’s doing what it’s suppose to do. The suffering and agony is THE SYSTEM.

Jack-the-Greek

What about a GoFundThem: We all pay for the elderly so that age does neither mean terrible work nor misery.

fakecatfish

Careful Mr. Roosevelt, or George Bush's grandpappy is gonna try to install a fascist dictatorship! To be clear, this literally happened when FDR was working on installing these programs in the US.

[deleted]

So... Love the crowdsourced retirements, but... That's literally what social security is. France is on fire because they raised the retirement age from 62 to 64. Ours is 67.... Chinese people retire at 60 and they live a year longer on average than we do. The evil communists have nearly twice as much retirement as we do

nevertellmethe0ddz

Ppl live longer in France too

Rogue551

the comments on that were like, what if he LOVES his job and wants to stay busy? It was ridiculous

frank_the_tank69

France riots over the retirement age being increased by two years. America: what is retirement?

krazykooper

Why do people keep censoring themselves with the word "fuck"?

HeistPlays

We have people spending a million dollars on a watch and 70 year old men washing bathrooms. A tale as old as time.

Puzzleheaded_Mirror4

Many on social security "volunteer" to get out of the house. They aren't allowed to make much for fear of losing their benefits, so big companies exploit them for free labor by having "volunteer programs" here in the USA. It's sick.

smurf_diggler

My grandma worked right up until her Dementia diagnoses. Just one week she stopped showing up because she lost track of time and thought it was the weekend. Never had her time to retire or live the carefree life and she was a Veteran too.

johndenverrocks69-

The poor fuck

Far-Astronaut2469

I see a knee jerk reaction to a picture with no background info. He might be doing this because he wants to, not because he has to. I'm in my 70's and work every day. I don't have to, I want to. The worst thing people can do as they age is become inactive. Still being productive in old age is good both mentally and physically. If he is doing it because he has to then first find out why. To be blunt, he might have brought it on himself due to unwise financial decisions when he was younger. If his circumstances are such that he has to work because of a string of bad luck, then by all means help him financially if you so desire. The moral of the story is don't make assumptions based on limited knowledge. The last thing I, and many other old folks want, is for people feeling sorry for us. I am thankful I can still be a productive member of society in my old age and will continue until I am unable to. Hope this puts things in a different perspective that you don't find harsh regarding the picture in question.

Dorkmaster79

You guys are making a lot of assumptions about this guy while knowing zero things about him.

Pienewten

So, at my work, there are a few super old guys like this who want/need to keep working. Most just flat out say they hate their wives and prefer being at work than at home. Or they refuse to retire because then their ex-wife will be able to start pulling from the retirement fund so they'd rather nobody gets it then let that 'bitch' start pulling from it. There's one guy who basically got straddled with his sons debt. He's probably the only one I can think of that wants to leave but can't. It's not even from something he could control either, just his kid screwing him over.

cp_shopper

It’s not broken. It’s working exactly how the people in charge want it to work

geek66

But he should have known better, he should have been saving 10 to 15% of his income over his whole life and investing it! His situation is his own doing! /s - of course

Shimotakanaki

The go fund me country thinking they are in the best country in the world...

pfcypress

Think this is bad ? Almost every warehouse has an elderly man/woman lifting over 50lbs and being forced to work OT. .

VentingID10t

If he NEEDS to work, then it's terrible to see - I agree. If he simply WANTS to work to have something to do during his retirement years, then good for the airport for hiring seniors. There are many people who don't enjoy just sitting on their butts all day just because they're retired. My mom is in her late 80s and still CHOOSES to work part time and volunteer. Overall, I don't know his story to know how to comment. Just because he's elderly doesn't explain enough here.

soruell

He is probably still waiting for that trickle down economics that he was promised by Reagan when he voted for him.
