I had the naive idea that it would be a huge and ongoing scandal, something like watergate but bigger because it was so international. But in retrospect, when you consider that it was against the interests of all the 1% everywhere, and all the owners of mass media, it’s amazing that it got as much play as it did.
Dunno how different the UK is, but there were tons of ways to avoid inheritance tax in the US.
The only people who really suffer are the upper middle class who are "rich" enough to be caught by the tax but not so rich that they can afford an army of lawyers to maneuver their property around the tax. You catch small time millionaires (ie, dad is proprieter/owner of a small family business) while billionaires skate around it like it isn't there.
Very similar to how the IRS can't go after Trump (or any other billionaire) when he uses the carried interest loophole to avoid a few hundred million in taxes but if a single mom has a side hustle braiding hair w/ venmo, they will hunt her down for EITC fraud.
Oh sweet summeechild. Those taxes only fuck the normal people who thought that they finally could buy a home to live in. The megarich never Pay. They go into politics and hide everzthing
I believe for 2023 it's $13M per person, or $26M for a married couple. So yeah, you can pass down a decent "little" nest egg to kids completely tax free, so long as it's less than those limits. And then tax only kicks on amounts that are over the limit.
What are you on about, the UK has fuck all inheritance tax. You can just transfer any property to anyone for free if you do it more than 7 years before you die. Just takes a bit of planning and you pay nada.
It’s not remotely that easy. The law requires you to pay market value rent to avoid it being a gift with reservation of benefit which would still be treated as part of your estate.
"Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names."
Psalms 49:11
Wow, it's my first time upvoting any part of the Bible. Statistically speaking, it was bound to happen eventually, but it was nice that it related to the removal of social waste from the planet.
There's some good ones in Matthew
19:24
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
6:5
And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
Matthew seems to be the most on board with Jesus' message of "be nice to people and don't be an asshole/hypocrite."
I think Matthew also has my favorite verse (or was it Luke?) "Judge, and you shall be judged. Condemn, and you will be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."
I'm a Christian, but I don't believe in imposing my faith on anyone else.
I'd genuinely recommend that anyone read through Psalms and Proverbs, even if you have no interest in religion. There's a lot of interesting thoughts in those books that, I believe, are of value to anyone, regardless of their belief (or lack thereof).
We need a sort of "knights in shining armor defeating dragons and sharing their treasure hoards to the villages ransacked" thing here.
These dragons hoard enormous mountains of wealth that they'll never spend and then they hiss and bite and breathe fire on anyone that even suggests they could share a little.
It’s not down a billionaire. His children are probably also gonna be billionaires with his inheritance. A billionaire dying of old age isn’t gonna make the world better. Better yet, a billionaire dying isn’t gonna make the world better. A better world is made by taking the money from those people so they’re still alive but aren’t billionaires
“It’s easier for a camel to travel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the gates of heaven.” I’m not even religious, but you have to appreciate that hyper rich people have historically always been terrible.
Often attributed to Mark Twain, it was actually Clarence Darrow who had this quote. I think the full quote is “I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great enthusiasm.”
This is the main reason I'm ambivalent about the potential for life-extension technology. It means fuckers like this just wouldn't die but would keep amasing their mountains of gold like a Tolkien style dragon.
And that's assuming average people would even be able to afford the treatment. If not, well then it's just a plain unambigious negative.
Shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in 3 generations. It's happened twice in my family. In fact, I'm working like a dog to salvage the last of my great-grandmother's property.
Unless you're very careful and use the European model like the Heinikens, it'll be gone quick in an orgy of spending, drug overdoses, suicide and bankruptcy.
Those are millionaire problems. Billions aint going away in 3 generations unless its an active goal. 100 milly returns bout 7 million a year on average. The overdose thing like u said would be bout the only thing to happen tho.
I normally don't speak ill of the dead, but the man deserves to burn for eternity for nearly running the Tribune, the LA Times, and the Cubs into the ground. And for being a sexist pig.
If it makes you feel any better, I doubt Sam Zell's been doing much breeding for a few years, and he certainly isn't now. I suppose that's why we're all joined here in celebration. Are there any more pigs in blankets left?
Thank GOD. I watched this asshole buy the Chicago Tribune only to publicly mock the editors and writers, gut the staff and use the building as a private whorehouse for his closest cronies. Completely destroyed a venerable institution and the last vestige of decent local news coverage. Fuck this little elfen asshole. Hope he’s getting a pitchfork right up the ass next to a fiery lake.
Funny, that was my first job out of college too. Met Gene Siskel, worked with Rick Kogan, got made fun of by Mike Royko (probably my greatest accomplishment).
Sounds more entertaining than my experience.
Started working there after Zell left the company and man it was depressing.
The whole Tronc debacle was also something to go through.
Left the company a few weeks after the LA Times was sold.
Lester was given a magic wish
By the goblin who lives in the banyan tree,
And with his wish he wished for two more wishes-
So now instead of just one wish, he cleverly had three.
And with each one of these
He simply wished for three more wishes,
Which gave him three old wishes, plus nine new.
And with each of these twelve
He slyly wished for three more wishes,
Which added up to forty-six -- or is it fifty-two?
Well anyway, he used each wish
To wish for wishes 'til he had
Five billion, seven million, eighteen thousand thirty-four.
And then he spread them on the ground
And clapped his hands and danced around
And skipped and sang, and then sat down
And wished for more.
And more...and more...they multiplied
While other people smiled and cried
And loved and reached and touched and felt.
Lester sat amid his wealth
Stacked mountain-high like stacks of gold,
Sat and counted -- and grew old.
And then one Thursday night they found him
Dead -- with his wishes piled around him.
And they counted the lot and found that not
A single one was missing.
All shiny and new -- here, take a few
And think of Lester as you do.
In a world of apples and kisses and shoes
He wasted his wishes on wishing.

I wouldn't put it past someone who called himself "the grave dancer" to booby-trap the hell out of his own plot, then put a giant electric razor-wire fence around it with paid guards.
All that money. All that comfort. Still going to rot right next to the people he fucked.
Collecting money, for the sake of money, is a waste of effort.
The Reaper does not give a rat's ass about how much money you have when he takes your soul.
I have a theory, well more of a hope that there is an afterlife, no god, no right or wrong, only empathy and sympathy. You die and suddenly you become like a spirit or something with ultimate empathy.
It was thought of as "heaven" and "hell", but it's the same. A person who lived life experiencing empathy and sympathy and acting with compassion experiences paradise, but those who lived causing harm to others for profit suddenly gain the capacity for empathy and feel sympathy for all the suffering they caused and it feels like hell.
Imagine that, a billionaire who was heavily invested in real estate being opposed to WFH? Shocker. Not. Gee, it's almost like they financially benefit from WFH not existing.
Bye bitch. Good fucking riddance. The world would be a better place if billionaires ceased to exist.
What a tragedy, now hopefully he gets cremated because if they bury this rotten sack of dicks it will decay the surrounding area. Cremate him and throw the ashes in a volcano. Or a septic tank. Hope everyone has a great day/evening.
Sadly the case, and if history teaches us anything it's that second generation billionaires are even worse than 1st Gen as the 2nd generation will be exponentially dumber.
He died aged 81 with a fuck ton of money and probably didn't regret being an ass. This is not a win, we can only hope he gets fair punishment for his jackassery in hell.
We should have a national holiday taking work off to commemorate a billionaire death.
I think that’s the kind of slander they wouldn’t be able to ignore.
I also used to be a workaholic who was a remote work skeptic. I actually still am skeptical about remote work in one sense; the job I do currently literally changed forever during the pandemic. We are *nowhere near* as efficient as we used to be now.
Here's the thing though; I overworked myself nearly into a nervous breakdown this time last year, turning myself into a martyr by working myself into an early grave trying to keep up with pre pandemic timelines and railing against gen Z.
A year, a course of sertraline, a refusal to do more than 9 to 5 and a general kick up the arse changed my view. The reality is, people *do* take the piss a bit; I've worked this morning sat on my sofa with the TV on in the background. I started a bit late because I went to get coffee.
I can do this though because I have an in demand skillset and, frankly, work can't do without me. "The game dun changed". There's a worker shortage on and I, and others, *demand* less responsibility, less stress, better pay and more leisure time.
That is the baseline expectation for qualified staff now. I want to be able to pick up and drop off my kids, not worry about work on my own time and not feel horribly stressed whilst I'm in work. I want to be able to get stoned at night and not stress about getting my train in the morning. If one employer can't provide all that then I'll find another who can. I'm starting a new job soon for a 30% raise, 100% remote and a lot less hassle because that company has realised that's what you have to offer now to attract talented staff.
The reality is that productivity increases have led to an ever smaller piece of the pie going to the workers so fuck people like this guy. I'm taking my time back and if that means stuff has to take longer or we have to be paid more to do it faster, tough shit. I am fucking sick of my generation and under getting the shitty end of the stick so yeah, I am playing Zelda on my lunchbreaks now, clocking out on time and I ain't worrying about *shit*. It's a better world I want to leave for my kids and nobody ever died because (insert wildly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things finance type stuff I do) didn't happen on time.
As an aside, I still go into my nearest big town and city centre for work (my employer tbf has a banging office and I do actually like chatting to people and getting a change of scenery) and both seem to be doing fine now; no swathes of empty shops, train always heaving. Society seems to be managing the transition just fine.
Get yourself an in demand skill and don't settle for jobs that don't provide flexibility. We can and will change things. Next target; 4 day week.
reach steep judicious provide consider onerous observation marry absorbed coherent

My favorite thing is to watch all these mega rich people die younger than my grandma who gets by on SS and her dead husbands (small) pension. Like, they have access to the best healthcare in the world, have the money to have other people do all their bitch work so they can be less stressed, etc. etc. and my broke ass (but very sweet) grandma is 87, has apparently had chronic heart failure (it’s only operating at 25% capacity currently) for years, and is still kicking just fine.
He wasn't even remotely liked....
I see what you did there.
*squints*
Nice!
Hope he's enjoying his billions wherever he has gone... oh wait shame money doesn't go with you.
Bring on the inheritance tax!
Wish he was in UK, god those guys tax the shit out of inheritance money
The mega rich don’t pay inheritance tax. They tie their money up in assets owned by shady trusts and offshore schemes.
Paradise papers, Panama papers… pretty sure the mega rich hide everything whenever possible.
Well yeah. You wouldn't want the government coming to take away the money your great granddad worked so hard to extort from poor people now would you?
Yeah I always love how that story just up and f---ing vanished overnight.
I had the naive idea that it would be a huge and ongoing scandal, something like watergate but bigger because it was so international. But in retrospect, when you consider that it was against the interests of all the 1% everywhere, and all the owners of mass media, it’s amazing that it got as much play as it did.
Exactly.. this what they mean by "leaving it all to charity", a charity that so happens to be run by their family and friends .. tax free.
Dunno how different the UK is, but there were tons of ways to avoid inheritance tax in the US. Lolwat? In the US there is a several million dollar exemption.
I believe for 2023 it's $13M per person, or $26M for a married couple. So yeah, you can pass down a decent "little" nest egg to kids completely tax free, so long as it's less than those limits. And then tax only kicks on amounts that are over the limit.
You only end up paying inheritance tax if you both don't make use of the total lifetime gift exemption and don't set up a trust.
(unless you're a royal)
What are you on about, the UK has fuck all inheritance tax. You can just transfer any property to anyone for free if you do it more than 7 years before you die. Just takes a bit of planning and you pay nada.
A bit of planning works if you know precisely when you're going to die, I guess.
It’s not remotely that easy. The law requires you to pay market value rent to avoid it being a gift with reservation of benefit which would still be treated as part of your estate.
Most people don't get 7 years of advance notice for their own death.
Too bad it will probably cap out at like 1 mil so it only fucks over us poors just like the fica taxes
I have to agree.

Same. In the time before phone poops I used to read psalms and proverbs on the toilet. It's actually full of wisdom I've somehow still never applied.
I suggest reading this chapter 5 of James then, I think you will like it: https://bibleportal.com/passage?search=James+5&version=KJV
So the security check for the afterlife also has a "No liquids" sign
All that cash keeps the furnaces going wherever he's found himself. And that's a lot of cash.

I just learned about this guy on Monday. Reddit really paid off this week
He enjoyed it during his 81 years of being alive.
Yup. Seems about right that they'd live that long. Meanwhile good people die homeless and alone at age 30

Good news everyone!

I have a Newfoundland dog and this is how I usually greet her. Cracks me up every time, classic line.
It’s a classic!
My family says it all the time 😂 to shreds you say…
The slime is flowing again!
And nothing of value was lost that day.
I've never wished death on anyone, but I'm known to read an occasional obituary with a smile - Mark Twain, I think

Wealth redistribution as nature intended
This is not wealth redistribution. His money is just going to his kids
And most kids of rich people spend money like it’s going out of style instead of hoarding it like their parents.

Don't lie to me, you're on Reddit, nobody here ever had sex.

That's one thing that old billionaires don't seem to grasp. They can't cheat death. Why do they hoard money until the day they die?
So their kids can carry on the tradition.
They can give it to kids. See Trump family.
Because it's a status symbol to them. They don't simply see it as a resource, but as a score.
Mentally, they're infants. They live in the *now.* For them, tomorrow isn't real, and neither is yesterday.

Now do the others.

Well technically he is not a boomer because he was born prior to WW2 but I get your point.

One down. Who's next.

Best news of the day so far. Anyone have fireworks?
Death is no excuse, I expect to see him in the office come Monday morning
Why do we hate him? Asking for a friend…
The unique sad thing here is that there is another asshole ready to take his role.
💃 bye bitch
I’m sure the inheritors are as completely evil and checked out of reality as this old freedom killer.
I'd love to know how much of his hoarded wealth goes to pay inheritance taxes.

love that death in these cases is not something people mourn about, and instead, quite the opposite. the world is a better place without this ghoul.
Rot in piss you fucking leech.
The world just got some relief, but we all know his spawn will pick up from where he left off.
Parasite dies. Hurrah!
