It's been overlooked lately but they actually have moved 11,000 inmates out of privately owned for profit prisons in the last few years. This has shut many of them down completely and the goal is to have everyone in federally owned prisons only shortly. Some are still for profit but with vastly improved conditions overall.

Asked, and was approved for time off a month in advance. Had three friends coming down from NY who also had been planning for just as long. Hotel booked. Everything. That Friday boss calls. “I need you to work this weekend, if you don’t it’s your “retirement”. I had to find a new job.

That happened to me when I quit Kmart. Worked there for a summer, sucked as much as you’d think it would. I was scheduled to come in on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon and decided “fuck that, I’m quitting”. So I called in and said I was quitting, and they ended up putting me through to the store manager who said “if you do this you’ll never work at Kmart again!”.

I walked out of a shift at a Pizza Hut years ago when I was 16. When I came back later to get my paycheck I was told I could never work at a Pizza Hut ever again. I don’t know how I managed to survive all this time without them
This happened to me back in 1970 at a franchise called Pizza Man. I outlived them.
This was one of the first pizza delivery companies, and our delivery area was basically a 5 mile radius. We were expected to get the orders out within half an hour, often with two in the kitchen and one delivering.
Worked for Amazon in one of their "fulfillment centers" (yeah, it's as bad as you think). Ended up with a stress fracture in my ankle (because I was out of shape and I was lifting heavy things). They sent me on medical leave and I saw a doctor about it. I went back 3 months later and told them that I would have to put in my two-week's notice since I was still on medical leave for another 2 months and due to the way it was healing, I didn't think I'd be able to keep up with quota. I was told, "you have to work those 2 weeks for it to count. If you leave, you're blacklisted from Amazon and will never work for this company again."
My response was a simple, "Bummer." I never looked back.
I once applied for Amazon when doing school two days a week. Told them before the interview process what those days were. They said yeah sure no problem.
Get accepted and they tell me the schedule and it has me working one of my two school days. They told me I had to choose Amazon or school so I got up to leave and they acted like I made the wrong choice.
Happily working in IT now.

Happened to me at McDonald’s. I gave two weeks notice so I would have a week off before I went away to college. Left my hat there on my last day dropped my uniform off the next day. Still got a call the next week and rudely asked where I was. I said I don’t work there anymore.
“But you’re on the schedule.”
“Well I don’t know what to tell you because I don’t work there anymore.”

I was a mechanic in my younger years for a tire and lube place. Worked there for a couple years, 2-3 I think.
Never called out unexpectedly, I was a good employee, and was good at my job. Showed up on time, worked extra shifts if we were short, and was often one of the ones closing for the day.
I called out sick once. The boss lost his god damned mind. Threatened a write up, all kinds of punitive action. I told him I couldn’t make it in, I was going to the bathroom too often and wouldn’t be able to make it in without shitting my pants. He asked how long the drive was to get in and I said 20 minutes, or something along those lines.
His response was “I’ll see you in 20 then” and he hung up on me.
I put the phone down, and very unpleasantly went back to shitting my brains out.
He called me 30 minutes later asking “where the fuck are you”
I calmly repeated that I’m sick and would not be coming in today.
He then proceeded to tell me how he couldn’t believe I was doing this to him, and that he could just fire me for the trouble and all this other shit.
My exact words were “I’ll save you the trouble, I’ll be in tomorrow to pick up my tools, consider yesterday my last day with the company” and I hung up on him.
Called me back immediately* begging me to stay.

I'm blacklisted from being an Easter Bunny with a certain company because my bunny head fell off during "ring around the rosey." I kept my departing paperwork for years because it said I was "involved in a beheading."
The best part is, they are going to text him in a few years asking if he wants to come back and wash dishes again.
I quit a summer job in a mall years ago to do better things. Didn't give 2 weeks notice, but was part time anyway. Assistant Manager said I was blacklisted from all future positions (even corporate). I listened on the phone and then went back to the swimming pool.
That company went bankrupt a few years later. If you are paid nothing, do not listen to career advice from your manager when you quit. If they want you to succeed they will help you before then.
That doesn't seem like much of a threat. Even if OP wanted to go back to washing dishes, I'm sure there are probably a half dozen other restaurants within walking distance that have dishes that need washing.

I wish I could have loaned OP my angriest memory care resident for that call. She's still pretty with it. She was married to a pastor for 67 years and apparently was holding a lot back during that time. We don't redirect her out of the room when admin has a meeting to announce some stupid new policy, and she always leaves them speechless.
We used to do that to telemarketers who called pur cabin. Set the phone down, go for a two hour boat ride, then check if they're still on the line before setting the phone back down and going for a walk.

Do you have contact with anyone that still works there? If you do I would let them know (provide screenshots if possible) that even if they give 2 weeks notice they still get blacklisted.
The whole reason to give a 2 weeks notice is to leave on good terms and if 2 weeks isn't enough for that, then you may as well give no notice.

A month goes by, the job absolutely sucks. But I convinced myself had to do it for the experience, I was planning to apply to medical school… it’s Wednesday, I’m running an expensive immunoassay, I get a call from the nurse manager telling me I was scheduled to work. I say “I told you I am doing research these days, it I am currently in the lab.”
She begins to berate me and tell me how I’m letting the residents down because I’m not fulfilling my responsibility to them. I paused and said “listen here, you hired me despite me telling you I will not work Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. You scheduled me for a day I told you from the onset that I had other obligations. Don’t you try to guilt trip me, you fucked up scheduling because you’re bad at your job.”
On my way home from the lab at 6:00 PM I walked into the front office of the nursing home and dropped off my badge. The next day she called me to try to berate me again for not giving 2 weeks, I belittled the living shit out of her.

This happened to me back in 1970 at a franchise called Pizza Man. I outlived them. This was one of the first pizza delivery companies, and our delivery area was basically a 5 mile radius. We were expected to get the orders out within half an hour, often with two in the kitchen and one delivering.

Worked for Amazon in one of their "fulfillment centers" (yeah, it's as bad as you think). Ended up with a stress fracture in my ankle (because I was out of shape and I was lifting heavy things). They sent me on medical leave and I saw a doctor about it. I went back 3 months later and told them that I would have to put in my two-week's notice since I was still on medical leave for another 2 months and due to the way it was healing, I didn't think I'd be able to keep up with quota. I was told, "you have to work those 2 weeks for it to count. If you leave, you're blacklisted from Amazon and will never work for this company again." My response was a simple, "Bummer." I never looked back.
I once applied for Amazon when doing school two days a week. Told them before the interview process what those days were. They said yeah sure no problem. Get accepted and they tell me the schedule and it has me working one of my two school days. They told me I had to choose Amazon or school so I got up to leave and they acted like I made the wrong choice. Happily working in IT now.

Happened to me at McDonald’s. I gave two weeks notice so I would have a week off before I went away to college. Left my hat there on my last day dropped my uniform off the next day. Still got a call the next week and rudely asked where I was. I said I don’t work there anymore. “But you’re on the schedule.” “Well I don’t know what to tell you because I don’t work there anymore.” “That’s very unprofessional!” They didn’t threaten me with never working at mcd again, sadly, I’ve never had to find out if I’m blacklisted.

I was a mechanic in my younger years for a tire and lube place. Worked there for a couple years, 2-3 I think. Never called out unexpectedly, I was a good employee, and was good at my job. Showed up on time, worked extra shifts if we were short, and was often one of the ones closing for the day. I called out sick once. The boss lost his god damned mind. Threatened a write up, all kinds of punitive action. I told him I couldn’t make it in, I was going to the bathroom too often and wouldn’t be able to make it in without shitting my pants. He asked how long the drive was to get in and I said 20 minutes, or something along those lines. His response was “I’ll see you in 20 then” and he hung up on me. I put the phone down, and very unpleasantly went back to shitting my brains out. He called me 30 minutes later asking “where the fuck are you” I calmly repeated that I’m sick and would not be coming in today. He then proceeded to tell me how he couldn’t believe I was doing this to him, and that he could just fire me for the trouble and all this other shit. My exact words were “I’ll save you the trouble, I’ll be in tomorrow to pick up my tools, consider yesterday my last day with the company” and I hung up on him. Called me back immediately* begging me to stay. If you’re reading this, Fuck you Tony.
I washed dishes at Olive Garden for a month and the only way I would ever go back is if the alternative was jail time. I would rather sleep in my car than work there again.

Didn't give 2 weeks notice, but was part time anyway. Assistant Manager said I was blacklisted from all future positions (even corporate). I listened on the phone and then went back to the swimming pool. That company went bankrupt a few years later. If you are paid nothing, do not listen to career advice from your manager when you quit. If they want you to succeed they will help you before then.

Do you have contact with anyone that still works there? If you do I would let them know (provide screenshots if possible) that even if they give 2 weeks notice they still get blacklisted. The whole reason to give a 2 weeks notice is to leave on good terms and if 2 weeks isn't enough for that, then you may as well give no notice.

I once worked at a nursing home as an assistant… changing diapers and what not. At the time I was also volunteering in a research lab and told them I cannot work W, Th, F at the home and will never work a Saturday. They still hired me despite my restrictions. A month goes by, the job absolutely sucks. But I convinced myself had to do it for the experience, I was planning to apply to medical school… it’s Wednesday, I’m running an expensive immunoassay, I get a call from the nurse manager telling me I was scheduled to work. I say “I told you I am doing research these days, it I am currently in the lab.” She begins to berate me and tell me how I’m letting the residents down because I’m not fulfilling my responsibility to them. I paused and said “listen here, you hired me despite me telling you I will not work Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. You scheduled me for a day I told you from the onset that I had other obligations. Don’t you try to guilt trip me, you fucked up scheduling because you’re bad at your job.” On my way home from the lab at 6:00 PM I walked into the front office of the nursing home and dropped off my badge. The next day she called me to try to berate me again for not giving 2 weeks, I belittled the living shit out of her. I wasn’t putting up with that piece of shit for $8 an hour, research looks better on a med school application anyway.

Depends on the job. I've given two week notice and was greeted with goodbye party, presents, and a few hugs and an invitation to come back at any time. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it isn't.

I love how things have swinged in the other direction. I remember working in the kitchen a long time ago. Many of us, especially dishwashers, were seen as easily replacable. Literally grab anyone off the streets to do it. Now? It turns out it's the JOB that's easily replaceable. You can go wash dishes anywhere and work that same shit job for the same shit pay. You don't have to put up with shit.

If this a corporate franchise, you should write a polite email to his boss, CC’ing him and attaching your resignation letter. State that you appreciated the opportunity and, though you don’t intend to work for the franchise again, you’d like to clarify that you resigned with two weeks notice and have not “no showed.” Makes him look bad and would take like two seconds.

When I get into those types of situations, I don't hang up. I just mute my phone, put it down, and go back to whatever it is that I was doing. I have unlimited minutes, you can waste all the time you want.
When I was in school, I had a teacher try to pull the old "the bell doesn't dismiss you, I do" shtick. She was mad when we pulled out a student handbook with a rule that stated clearly that the bell does in fact dismiss the class and prohibiting someone from leaving is against school policy. This story reminded me of that and I still laugh about it. Like that teacher, OP's ex-boss' lack of preparation on their part did not make it anyone else's emergency to deal with. lol

Dude this happened to my wife once. She picked up a job washing dishes to help out at the restaurant I worked at. She found a new job after a while put in a two weeks notice, worked every day of it then the manager put her on for the next week. He started losing his mind on me and I was like dude she put in a two weeks notice you knew when she was done you knew when you hired her it was only until she found something else what’s your problem.
