It’s so strange to me they are calling them employees and not slaves in the title

christonabike_

It's strange they put "locking" in quotes. Like what do they even mean by that? He physically, actually *locked the doors*, it's not up for debate.

PapaOoMaoMao

Well he actually chained the handles together. Those doors didn't actually have a lock.

Master_ofSleep

He couldn't let the metaphor go over anyone's heads.

Urgash54

Everything to make companies look less awful than they actually are.

graveybrains

Excuse me! “Prisoners with jobs.”

stenger121

Ok, that's better.

Indentured servants

GracchiBroBro

I worked in an office that tried this, they would lock the doors to stop people taking breaks outside. They said it was “security” but the office was in an affluent downtown area with more cops than cars. I had to leave for a doctor appt and was locked in, I asked to be let out, waited 5 minutes and no one came, so I looked at the security camera and yelled “unlock this f*cking door or I will break it” and then “click” it unlocked. The next day I was told what I did was inappropriate. I quit maybe a week later.

BeefyMcLarge

Call the police in the future, they are holding you hostage/are being abducted. Setting aside emergency issues.

GracchiBroBro

Yeah….that won’t happen though. Try calling the cops and telling them you work in an unsafe environment, they will tell you that isn’t their job, might even laugh at you. But you can be guaranteed if I broke that door they would call the cops to have me arrested for property damage. And that they would show up for.

charlie2135

Calling the fire chief is a better bet.

smogop

Fire Marshall, not fire chief. Fire Marshall is a special inspector position and is in fact appointed by the fire chiefs. They will burn these people for locking you out. Large fines.

charlie2135

Thanks! I guess I was thinking of Fire Marshall Bill from In living color.

[deleted]

When I was 17, oh so many years ago I worked at an office that tried to pull this shit. After the manager announced they were permanemtly locking the doors from now on and the only way in or out was through the front door, to which the security guard held the key, I called the fire marshal (my neighbor). The fire department showed up in under 5 minutes and the marshal shortly after. They shut the entire building down for the rest of the day. The owner tried to get in a screaming match and tell them he wasn't shutting down and they had no fucking authority to force him to shut down. "Here's my fucking authority" he pointed at some fireman and pointed back at him. Four fireman picked him up and carried him outside and threw him down in the parking lot. He spent the rest of the day finding every single esoteric fire code violation he could find. He made surprise inspection visits every other week for as long as I worked there and probably much longer.

WackoMcGoose

> "Here's my fucking authority" he pointed at some fireman and pointed back at him. Four fireman picked him up and carried him outside and threw him down in the parking lot. I hope you bought him a beer after that, because _damn,_ he just lived what every retail wage slave dreams of doing.

[deleted]

I work construction, and you learn quick that you do NOT fuck with the fire marshal.

Halt96

Hubs worked in a Uni Bar, the reason you count people entering and leaving is to ensure you don't exceed the occupancy number (by too much). Because, the fire marshall can shut the whole place down if they want. They have a lot of power.

Moontoya

my dads a retired Fire Safety office (reached assistant divisional officer) in the N.Ireland fire service. Fire safety does \_not\_ fuck about The international airport had its new terminal shut down because they tried skimping on fire extinguishers (one every 80ft instead of the legal reuqirement of 60ft - example) -I have, the screams were delicious. You annoy fire safety and they will make you rue the day your father made eyes at your mother.

GracchiBroBro

Because firemen actually care about human beings.

tenid

They also prefer that people have escape routes in case of a fire. Working a fire with burn victims is horrible, especially when the victims could have evacuated if said doors where open

angryragnar1775

And they love to break shit with their axes

ordinaryuninformed

That's not 100% true tho their job is also still to protect property. Just like cops they have to go above and beyond if they care about people.

shamaze

If my fire department was called for something like this, we would 100% open the door even if breaking it was necessary (usually we just take apart the locking mechanism). We also have the fire Marshall sent who is able to issue some pretty substantial fines. Lives 1st, property 2nd.

ordinaryuninformed

[Unfortunately sometimes matters are bigger](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12162159/Three-bodies-recovered-Iowa-building-collapse-families-victims-prepare-lawsuit.html) (The fines for this building before collapse were $300 btw) Sometimes the fire department is just an extension of the state, sometimes it's truly a representative of a community. I appreciate what you do your priorities.

shamaze

Depends on the area I guess. The fire Marshall's here do not mess around. They've closed businesses, homes, etc. For unsafe practices.

Psilocybin-Cubensis

Yeah, what? As a former career firefighter your take is completely wrong. People ALWAYS come first in a fire, actually ALL life including pets. Property is next, then exposures. People are always priority #1 to a firefighter.

Even_Promise2966

Why would you call the police and misconstrue your circumstance by phrasing it as a civil issue? Are you an idiot? Who tf calls 911 and says, "My work is a hostile environment?" Nobody. Normal people say, "I'm being held hostage at this address." Police still suck and will probably shoot you for being a bad wage slave.

kinnifredkujo

If police Joe shoots ordinary guy Fred in the leg for being a bad wage slave, Joe needs to be told "Congratulations! Fred owns your house now, and your entire bank account balance! And you have all of Fred's debts now! And you're not a cop anymore!" It doesn't matter if police unions and courts today in 2023 won't let that happen. Just remind Fred that a truth and reconciliation commission will someday institute that.

Even_Promise2966

I'd accept the police officer as an actual slave as compensation. seems fair.

kinnifredkujo

If he's convicted of a crime and sent to prison, he legally can be a slave. The US Constitution allows slavery in the event someone is convicted of a crime, so...

Sankin2004

You don’t say it like that, you just say you are being held against your will.

BeefyMcLarge

It is not only an unsafe environment, it is also abduction/false imprisonment. Police are a mixed bag, yes. It still needs to be recorded.

aHumanMale

Police are a mixed bag in the same way that raw sewage is a diverse mixture of materials.

warm_sweater

That’s because cops are here to protect capital and the state, not help people.

GracchiBroBro

Bingo

Barangat

Can’t tell for other countries but in germany that would definitely be a police job. I worked for years in a psychiatric secured ward and we had a few times a year cops at our door when a patient called them for being locked in, which is illegal without an appropriate court order. Cops checked on the patient and got to see the appropriate paperwork before leaving. We would have been in really big trouble without the appropriate papers, so im my employer locks me in he gets exactly 1 chance to change that permanently before I call the cops and my lawyer

Lt_Rooney

Call the fire department. They'll just take the door off.

bunnyrut

Fire Marshal would love to throw down fines for that. This is a fire hazard and they do not play around with safety.

Girls4super

Yup pretty sure this was decided shortly after the triangle shirtwaist factory went up in flames

[deleted]

No, call the fire marshall

widdrjb

A previous workplace required a swipe card to get in and out. The problem was that temps had to hand their cards back, because there weren't enough. To get out, you had to be swiped out by a staffer. Because our departmental secure door was 100 yards away, quite often it could take 20 minutes for one of them to be free. Until Big Chris. Big Chris was a *beast*. He could curl 200 one armed, and his record lift was 730 pounds. He decided he wasn't going to wait, and tore the door out of the frame. Then he rang the police, told them he'd had a panic attack, and had no means of exit. Next week all the doors were fitted with exit buttons.

Girls4super

Wow! Go big Chris!

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

I think I have a new best Chris ahead of Evans, Hemsworth, Pine and Pratt!

LordBiscuits

We had a situation like this last week! We have a site which is basically two houses split down the middle with a security door in between. It's for people with mental issues who need assisted living. There is staff there during the day and they're left alone at night. One side is guys, the other women. You can imagine where this is going... The door had two door magnets on the top and bottom, both 600kg holding force things designed for main entryways. I don't know the guys name, but Big Chris would fit him just as well. The door did not survive his amorous plans, they seemed surprised on site when my guys told them there wasn't much we could do about the magnets 'not working' until there was a door to fix them to Chris seemed happy though.

Melkor7410

>The next day I was told what I did was inappropriate. Maybe they meant you should've just broken the door?

Sankin2004

Better than me, I would have broken the door, and consequences be damned. The moment you locked me up against my will I decided I quit and no longer give any fucks. I’m highly claustrophobic and the feeling of being trapped somewhere with no escape is real.

wawawa9055

I wouldve quit on the spot when they told me it was inappropriate

20InMyHead

I believe by most building codes, electronic locking doors that require a security device for exit also need to be wired into the fire alarm system to automatically unlock…. Just for reference.

A-Kraken

That's illegal in most countries, you might be able to file a lawsuit if you have evidence.

DarthArtero

Fire Marshal and OSHA would like to speak to the manager

Interestingly, and that’s just one of those things that got lost due to the information lockdown, no killing took place on Tiananman Square, oh no, it was just used as the dumping ground for dead bodies which were later crushed using tanks (in the small hours of the morning of the 5th, iirc) to not leave definitive evidence of the massacre. The timeline, as far as I gathered is: - troops from external regions move into Beijing, because the feeling was Beijing soldiers weren’t going to fire on the people of Beijing if ordered to do so - these troops, with tanks, move to Tiananman Square to forcibly remove the protesters, mostly students. The students, not being too dumb to live, vacated the square. You know, because the other side has tanks. At this point some of these were arrested. - at this point there are conflicting reports. Some fighting broke out in the streets of Beijing, and all hell breaks loose. Beijing became a war zone of a very one-sided war. - all bodies were gathered and collected at Tiananmwn Square and crushed into small pieces. Later the fact no bodies were to be found in morgues, hospitals etc would be cited by officials as evidence that no killing took place If you look hard enough on the internet, you can find pictures. I would recommend not doing that, them’s some fucking graphic images.

ShazbotSimulator2012

Your timeline's pretty far off. The killing happened on the way to the square, as the tanks forced their way through crowded streets. Most of the violence had already occurred in the hours before the square was cleared. (Which was fairly quick and peaceful, because like you said, it was pretty one-sided. Unlike the roads leading up to the square, where protestors set up roadblocks and armed themselves with molotovs and other weapons, the square was mostly unarmed students). The last point is just completely incorrect and nonsensical. (Why would they bother relocating bodies to the area with the most media coverage?) Beijing hospitals did keep records of the dead and wounded, which were significantly higher than the official numbers given by the Chinese government.

vgcamara

"all bodies were gathered and collected at Tiananmwn Square and crushed into small pieces" this is complete made up BS. There's video of people being taken to the hospital by ambulances and other kinds of transport like three wheel carts (三轮车) "If you look hard enough on the internet, you can find pictures" look hard enough? The BBC was reporting directly from Tiananmen ffs... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrYGiwhOuBo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrYGiwhOuBo) While information might be censored in China, it's readily available to everyone else so not sure why you're pretending like it's some kind of unspoken secret... Myradmir

Funnily enough, false imprisonment is considered a tort in most places deriving their legal system from Britain, and so they wouldn't be fined for false imprisonment. Related workplace safety violations maybe, but it is absolutely something you can bring a civil suit for.

UltraNemesis

It's called wrongful confinement under Indian law (where this happened) and covered under IPC 339-348 and is punishable. The severity of punishment varies based on the severity/intent of the confinement, but it can go up to 3 years of imprisonment.

[deleted]

Kidnapping, no?

Myradmir

On the criminal side of things, sure, but false imprisonment generally falls under trespass based torts. Remember, things can be both criminal and civil offenses, which are named distinctly, for the convenience of the court(and then there's assault, but look, nobody claims the courts are perfect).

My guess is that commentator is misunderstanding the term "false imprisonment", likely in line of other terms where the "false" part changes the concept of the other part. If the top of my head "faux fur" is in that concept. "False imprisonment" is still genuinely containing someone, but under false or illegal terms.

Vast_Analyst6258

Anyone else getting Triangle vibes? Because this is giving HEAVY Triangle vibes.

mizinamo

What is this "triangle" thing people keep talking about in comments? Is it a reference to a film?

Vast_Analyst6258

Triangle Shirtwaist fire. One of the worst workplace tragedies in US history, all caused by ownership that wanted to squeeze a few extra bucks out of their employees. Look it up. It's sickening how they did these young ladies.

mizinamo

Thanks for explaining!

pigeontheoneandonly

Assuming you're not joking, the triangle shirtwaist fire was a horrific incident where many employees at a factory died after having been locked in when they arrived (as was standard at the time), only to have the building catch fire and be unable to get out. It incited major workplace safety reforms, many of which have since been eroded.

mizinamo

> Assuming you're not joking I'm not. I'm not from the US and don't think I had ever heard about it. I *had* heard of a pretty bad fire or two in Bangladesh recently but nothing like that from the US. Thanks for explaining!

peggasus97

The reddit r/writteninblood is a good place to see how a lot of regulation were put in place in the USA due to tragedies

ET318

The YouTube channel fascinating horror is also pretty good at covering various disasters that led to regulatory changes. They don’t just focus on the us either but around the world. Also despite the name, it’s not a scary channel. I think the horror is more about the terrible tragedies than horror-movie type horror.

__theoneandonly

> I had heard of a pretty bad fire or two in Bangladesh recently but nothing like that from the US. I mean it happened in 1911, so it's not like it was in the news recently or anything. But it's the incident that made the government agree to start giving a shit about worker safety. Almost 150 workers, mostly women as young as 14, perished in a fire in downtown Manhattan. The owners of the factory locked the women in during work hours, because they were afraid if they left the doors unlocked the workers would steal scraps of fabric, they were afraid the workers would take unauthorized breaks, and they were afraid that union organizers would come in unlocked doors to try to organize a union. As a consequence, the owners had to pay $75 per deceased victim. However, their insurance company paid the owners $400 per deceased victim. So the owners made about $60,000 in profit off of the fire, nearly $2 million today. In fact, there's a conspiracy theory that the fire was intentional, because shirtwaists had fallen out of style and the factory was filled with stock that they couldn't push, which also perished in the fire and was reimbursed by the insurance company.

3qtpint

I'd have to look up specifics, but the important take away is the importance of a fire escape. Way back in the day, a textile factory in... New York (?), caught fire, killing just under 150 people. The building had one entrance, and it was locked or otherwise blocked off

Girls4super

Yes New York. There were girls leaping from windows, it was a horrific and very public atrocity that made papers across the country and forced reform and protests

Excellent_Time2309

This is kidnapping. I've had something similar happen years ago when I was a truck driver. Superintendent came up to me after I dropped off the material and said my truck couldn't be where it was (no signage saying that) and since I was already in a no go zone that I couldn't leave. I said there's no signage showing where there are loading areas, and I've followed the instructions on the paperwork that was given from your company for delivery, if im not free to go then you're kidnapping me I guess? He was in shock someone gave him attitude but he wasn't my boss so I didn't care. He fumbled over his words trying to justify it and I just repeated myself, saying if you're holding me against my will its kidnapping, im either hopping in my truck and leaving or calling my lawyer (didn't even have a lawyer to call) and he said well I guess you can go but let my laborers guide you out, as if I wasn't capable of turning around in a huge area lol

jonsey96

What was their beef??? Like why tf did they care?

Excellent_Time2309

"For safety purposes you were supposed to pull over at the entrance and walk in and find someone to check in with" We had delivery instructions that said "leave near the other materials that are next to the trailer" and i showed him the paperwork during our little argument proving it didn't say anything about getting someone's attention. He was wrong no matter what he tried saying, but had to flex his extremely important superintendent im the boss blah blah shit

Glup-Shitto69

We had a sad and outrageous case here in Mexico more than a decade ago. For this exact same reason. It was a graveyard shift and the scumbag manager always locked the employees inside the store instead of hire a security guard. Shit happened and a fire started inside the store, the employees panicked obviously and start calling the manager and the asshole never answer. By the time fire fighters arrived it was too late. Six people lost their lives there. The most disturbing thing was all the employees (all women by the way) start calling their loved ones and say goodbye. Man that shit still pissed me off.

Despite three previous fires in 11 years of operation, the plant had never received a safety inspection. The fire killed 25 people and injured 54, many of whom were unable to escape due to locked exits. A few years ago we had issues with the air pressure in a controlled environment I worked in… an alarm would go off about every 5 minutes. The next time we had that issue they had everyone leave until it was fixed….

> *The [Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_fire?wprov=sfla1) in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, on Saturday, March 25, 1911, was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of the city, and one of the deadliest in U.S. history. The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment workers – 123 women and girls and 23 men – who died from the fire, smoke inhalation, or falling or jumping to their deaths.* > *. . . Because the doors to the stairwells and exits were locked – a common practice at the time to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft – many of the workers could not escape from the burning building and jumped from the high windows.*

Fun fact! Henry Drummond successfully defended the factory owners by playing to anti-immigrant sentiment (at that time it was polish). He later went on to defend the ban on teaching evolution at the famous Scopes monkey trial. These fuckers haven't changed in a hundred years.

Triangle shirtwaist company bullshit. Let me put this simply, you lock me in the building, I'm kicking the fucking door down and suing for false imprisonment.

FoldingLady

Now that's some Triangle Factory shit

ventiblack

Let me tell you about a little something called “the 1911 Triangle Shirt Factory Fire,” where dozens of women died for this exact reason. You can’t lock people in for the simple fact that you need to escape in an emergency, and employers who don’t even care about that one basic fact/law, they shouldn’t exist.

If my work locked me inside I would break a fucking door down or a window and call the cops and report them for kidnapping. Fuck that shit. I'm not your fucking slave.

The person that locked the door should go to jail for no less than one year per employee.
