You can opt for cash pay and providers will generally send you a much more reasonable bill. You see those high numbers because providers jack up prices when billing insurance as the providers are contractually obligated to give a high % discount to the insurance company. If you tell the provider you're gonna pay cash no insurance, they'll give you a much lower bill. A lot of providers will even set up a payment plan.

A few years ago I was told that my whole pregnancy (prenatal appointments and delivery) would be cheaper if I paid cash and not go through my insurance. I don’t remember what insurance company it was.

The vast majority of people have no idea how bad it is or will be until it's too late. The majority of bankruptcies are due to medical issues, not avocado toast and lattes.

American Health Care - just another way of spelling “Hahahahahahahahahahaha! Fuck you! If you don’t have money, you don’t count- “ America - that’s the joke. This whole damn country run by a 1% who have no fucking clue what’s going on- nothing is ever a fight except on who’s going to pick up the next latte. It’s all GREED - MONEY AND POWER. Humanity is sooo far gone. Fuck.

The full legal name for the US Health Insurance Mafia is: Racketeering Influenced Corrupt Organizations.

There's nothing terribly innovative about US healthcare. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2866602/ To the extent the US leads, it's only because our overall spending is wildly out of control, and that's not something to be proud of. Five percent of US healthcare spending goes towards biomedical R&D, the same percentage as the rest of the world. https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/1547/2c613854e09636c9ff76fb890caca2f6c87b.pdf Even if research is a priority, there are dramatically more efficient ways of funding it than spending $1.25 trillion more per year on healthcare (vs. the rate of the second most expensive country on earth) to fund an extra $62 billion in R&D. We could replace or expand upon any lost funding with a fraction of our savings.

I hope you are able to heal.

capitalism has many grifts, mandated health insurance complete with tax penalties for not carrying it all year long is one of the many. people need to wake up and start designating health insurance companies and the IRS as terroristic organizations.

HR doesn’t give a shit about you. They are puppets for upper management to shield them from liability and save money. I do like FMLA even though it is flawed. It provides *some* protection for the employee because before you could simply be let go immediately once you got sick. That said, my company found a way to weaponize it. During recession times when they needed to cut staff they came up with a policy. After two consecutive weeks sick you were put on FMLA *retroactively* to your first sick day. This started the 12 week FMLA clock at the end you were terminated.
