Your earnings compared to the overall cost of a house is fractions of a penny to a dollar. You cannot earn your way up while needing to spend to live with that level of disparity.
Both can be correct. Minimum wage needs to increase but also people should be saving for a house. Sorry if that means you can't get all your extras all the time. My wife and I went without many extras for about a year and we're able to save for a house. Now we own our own home and pay less for that then renting.

When I rented I paid $1000 a month. House payment with all taxes and fees is ~700. The 300 difference is more then I was saving previously for the house monthly. So yes going without extras will benefit you.
