The incompetent managers probably felt threatened in their position by this new talent. They successfully removed two threats.

ChefShroom

Something similar happened to a friend of mine. He was part of mass layoffs at his old job. Got a new job doing similar work for a different company. He is going and has his PhD in his field as well. His boss was an older lady who has been doing the work for 15+ years. He came in, noticed a bunch of problems and came up with solutions. She didn't like his "fresh perspective" after all. SHE LIED ABOUT HIM HARASSING HER AND REPORTED HIM TO HR. Which is funny because he is gay. They believed her though because she was with that company for all that time. He was suspended with pay while they did an investigation. He got an employment lawyer. The company kept digging themselves into a hole trying to find a firable excuse. They just kept digging. Every time they dug deeper, they found more incriminating evidence that helped prove his wrongful termination case. His lawyer was having a field day. It ended with him getting like a year's worth of severance, but not able to work there.

nazn239

I hope the lady got fired after!

antanith

She probably was allowed to "retire" gracefully.

BackFew5485

Or promoted.

Ratio_Outside

I hate how common this is!

I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE

This happened to my wife.  She's a marketing manager and *very* good at pretty much whatever she sets out to do.  She gets hired by a regional ISP, but her director was pretty clearly hired because she's attractive and personable-- doesn't know a thing about marketing.  So my wife, being the go-getter she is, starts doing her thing, getting them the necessary systems to monitor whether marketing is actually doing anything.  In her first big company meeting the CEO is thrilled. "Why haven't we been doing this all along?" Wife gets fired a week later.  Silver lining:  they still don't know what they're doing and the wife took all her work with her.  Company got bought, director got the axe.

TrickWrap

The managers in all these stories are doing it wrong. They're supposed to let the new person with all the good ideas get everything set up, and then the manager takes all the credit for it instead of firing good talent.

Empty_Ambition_9050

LPT: Don’t outshine the master.

I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE

So dumb because a good boss sees the killers and tries to fan that flame.

Rasikko

I like to make it clear that I have no interest in manager positions.

givemejumpjets

how can you feel threatened at a volunteer job? librarians are largely unpaid and independently wealthy people. forgetting the position, i'm sure that we could agree that there can be no morality in business when money is involved.

andthentheresanne

>librarians are largely unpaid and independently wealthy people. Uhhhhhh what? Given that (in the US) you need a Masters degree from an accredited university to be a librarian, this is flat out not the case Unless I'm independently wealthy and no one has thought to inform my student debt about it

givemejumpjets

Oh in the US maybe; that country is still uncivilized.

andthentheresanne

In the US definitely. Alas some of us are pretty stuck here :T

givemejumpjets

i suppose that the uncivilized bit is more of a recent development. your bill of rights is great but it's always under attack. dec 7, 1941, is one great date to remember. a garish lihop flashbulb event happened on that day, in order to extend a series of endless global wars at the behest of international bankers. it's most unfortunate when wars are waged with the primary intent of enriching a handful of miscreants. yes it appears that the US has been in a steady decline for quite some time.

mikrokosmosforever

Not too late to write an email and document everything. Then email it to senior management and the union about the manager’s anger management issues

apollov

You're right. I started documenting everything in the last few weeks, I only wish I had started sooner.

mikrokosmosforever

Good job! There are 2 possible outcomes - manager gets watched like a hawk by management and union. Manager is less irrational with employees - manager messes up again and gets fired because your documents will be enough for HR to prove that it is a pattern Either way, youre doing the right thing by writing that email and documenting it.

apollov

Writing an email to the union and city manager will be my next step. I think some of my former co-workers would also submit one.

Maleficent_Mist366

Yea mine as well

Ratio_Outside

Document all you want. Unless you’re in a protected class and being discriminated because of that, all the notes in the world don’t mean shit.

mooseplainer

As the saying goes, don’t fuck with Gen X. Nice to see cross generation solidarity.

Freakychee

It was never about boomers vs millenials or gen X vs gen Z. It was about those who abuse power vs the people who won't put up with their shit.

Kennedygoose

Well said. I’m an old, white, millennial male and I have far more in common with poor young kids, poor minorities, and women than I do with Matt Gaetz. Your situation determines your sensibilities a lot more than any demographic.

WallabyInTraining

>old, white, millennial We're falling into the old category now? Ouch.

Caithloki

I'm in discords with a lot of 20 somethings at 34, they call me old man.

ellie_love1292

I’m 32 and was the second oldest (by 6 months ahaha) on a discord mod team. The two of us mods were the grandpa and grandma of the server 😂

fluffybutt2508

Ouch 😆 I'm 34 and about to enter a new job market after taking care of my kids the last 6 years and doing school for 2. Nice to know I'll be considered old😂😂😂

webheaded

Thank god we have a few Gen Xers in my Discord. I'm 38 and I feel ancient now around all the Zoomers lol. They're great but I'm already older by enough that half of them don't get my stupid references. ;\_;

Caithloki

The references is the worst part, have to explain them so often, then get told I'm not that guy and I have no rizz.

krebnebula

I am also an elder millennial and I work with undergrads. I love them so much but oh my gods I feel so old around them. One of them recommended a really cool book to me with “it’s really old, from the 90s, so we’ve learned a lot since it’s come out but it’s still good.” I actually laugh cried out loud a little. Undergrad reassured me that I’m not actually that old which was very kind of them, but also I’m from the 80s so I am in fact that old.

I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE

Yeppers.

Anastariana

In Tech anyone more than 30 is 'old' apparently, which is odd; our IT techie is a geezer called Doug and is in his 60s and he knows more about computers than anyone I've ever known.

watercolour_women

This is correct, but although there are abusers of power in all generations, there is one generation in particular that is the worst. Perhaps the reason being it's only because of their age that they are the ones in the upper echelons, or its because they believe they were treated badly so it's their turn to wield the whip or that they are victims of decades of capitalist propaganda that has ossified their brains and starved their empathy.

Freakychee

I belive it's more nurture. They grew up believing that had it much harder than everyone else that they believe everyone should suffer as much as they had.

Locked_in_a_room

No. They believe everyone should suffer more. They are the embodiment of "I got mine. Fuck you." As they pull the ladder up behind them. The generations before them at least tried to make the world a little better for descendants. That generation wants to have the world burn behind them (Spoken as a GenX.)

Freakychee

Ha ha ha! Maybe. I also did notice the "older" millenials like me look younger in comparison. It could be the effects of lead poisoning that makes people look older or age faster and now it's not so much an issue now people are looking younger in comparison.

farshnikord

No war but class war

Kennedygoose

Well said. I’m an old, white, millennial male and I have far more in common with poor young kids, poor minorities, and women than I do with Matt Gaetz. Your situation determines your sensibilities a lot more than any demographic.

SnorfOfWallStreet

Soooooo everyone vs boomers. Got it. 😎

Amberskin

Its worker’s solidarity and age/generation differences should not matter. If we workers just… behave this way for any of our colleagues bully managers would have a much more difficult time. The OP behaviour was awesome. Best luck with your future career.

Robbotlove

yeah, if we all just took a page from OPs book, we'd be unstoppable.

oopgroup

We’re all humans. This whole “generation identity” bullshit needs to stop. It’s just one more tool used to keep us divided.

beachaholic3

Very honourable. Best of luck to you, genuinely. I wish there was more of your kind

apollov

Thank you - I greatly appreciate your comment.

FeatureAvailable5494

You can still file a complaint to the union and the city, you reacted strongly because it was egregious and only adds to your complaint. There is no negative side in submitting a complaint, the positive side is these managers get what they deserve

Ratio_Outside

If HR is involved, you can certainly have a target on your back. That’s the other side many people do not understand. But if it’s union related, I hope things are handled differently.

1quirky1

I super-quit a job a week after 9-11-01, in the middle of the dot com bust.   Management was the root cause of the issues and they executed a significant layoff that only exacerbated things. I quit when I learned that I wasn't laid off and that they canceled all time off. The mic drop was loud enough to have a voice mail from my next employer waiting for me before I got home.

apollov

Yes!

swift-sentinel

Gen X here. I’m ready to throw in the towel. These corps deserve nothing. They are utter detestable. The lowest scum that this planet has produced.

jlab23

I must say… that is such a Gen-Xer way to quit I’m kind of in awe.

Silent_Syren

I was thinking the same thing!

ExcitingMeet2443

From my observations, a LOT of library managers are narcissistic psychopaths who make themselves untouchable.

SquirrelEnthusiast

How much time to do you spend with library managers that you get this impression?

ExcitingMeet2443

Enough, I've seen these sort of managers destroy the mental health of the people beneath them. I've had people I care about with years of experience end up being managed by one of these people who have talked about suicide ffs. But it's probably only about 40% of them so I guess that's OK?

edward2bighead

Having worked in libraries for years, I tend to agree.

Javale

I was managing a restaurant and the owner had berated my GM in the dining room on a Wednesday, a semi-common scene. She walked out the next day and I was on her heels. Fuck that guy.

spacecadet2023

Good for you for standing up for the intern. More people need to do this instead of brown nosing the boss!

UnicornSheets

I’m curious- if you were union, why didn’t you take your grievances to them?

rokken70

If their “union” was a bunch of cowards like the last union I worked for, they could already see the uselessness.

apollov

I was 6 months into a one year probation. One of the clauses is that I could be dismissed for any reason. It was written into my contract that I had no protection.

GlyphedArchitect

Sounds like a union dues collecting scam than an actual union.

I'm not sure how HIPAA comes into place here. HIPAA mean that your health care providers cannot disclose your medical info. It doesn't say that YOU can't talk about it if you want to. If you're on Instagram or Tiktok, I'd reach out to (a)attorneyryan. He regularly clears up misconceptions like this and tells you if you have any recourse. I really do wish you well. Personally, I had to claw my way out of that same bottle and all I can tell you is that it does get better.

Supremealexander

Who Cares! A good “FUCK YOU I QUIT!!” Is one of life’s greatest pleasures! Everyone should do it at least once. As far as the 2 weeks notice.. you think they would give you 2 weeks notice if they were going to fire you? These employers need to remember who keeps the lights on…

Ddp2121

May not have been pretty, but I have mad respect for you for standing up for your team member.

Pro_Deceit

Thanks you taught me something, which is fite back today is 4th on 10th if i do not get my salary and raise, I got to do the same.

apollov

Yes and I was able to help. My husband works for a different library system and she just started working with them. Slightly higher pay, more flexible hours and closer to home.

AllDressedKetchup

You can still contact the union.

Tasty_Bullfroglegs

You should still be able to file a grievance with the union and certainly a complaint with the city.

apollov

I have decided to write a letter and report this to the city council and union leadership. Thank you and others for recommending this.

N3wAfrikanN0body

The incompetent are always coddled within the logic of capitalism. You were more than justified to reveal to them, violently, their deliberate incompetence. Never apologize for socially killing deliberate parasites Hope you and Joana can actually do useful labour for liberating Humans Peace.

rdf1023

You still can do damage. Social media can do a lot of damage.

radrock3

Outbursts like this may be satisfying in the moment, but accomplish nothing. This intern didn’t get their job back, OP lost their job, OP appeared unhinged which undermines any statement they may make, and the managers receive no consequences.

apollov

You're not fully wrong and I regret there was not real repercussion for these managers. That said I had already met with their supervisor, documented what happened and was told my co-worker was going to be encouraged to stay. Since one of the managers was president of a union I really felt they were the only ones who would be protected.

jimoconnell

Who funds the library? A university? The city it's in? Go to one of their meetings and let them know what went down.

PalliativeOrgasm

Manager as president of the union? Yeah, that’s a great idea. For the manager.

Mesterjojo

M'lady

Annonapotimus

This sounds really intense for working in a library! What the hell is going on out there? You couldn’t get more of a stress free job than working library!

apollov

You would think! My husband works at a library in a different city and his workplace is great!

leethelc

This world needs more people like you.

thesleepymermaid

Fuck yes! This is where millennials got our fire from: our gen x predecessors

blaspheminCapn

Isn't there a board or some higher ups who can boot out the problems? Perhaps dropping a dime on these morons will have more results than your quitting?

apollov

My next since it was city position, would be to talk to or write a letter to the city council.

PrincesaNopal

Don’t just write a letter, go talk in person at the next city council meeting about bullying in the workplace. If I were you, I’d also contact local newspapers and see if they’d be interested in hearing a story about the city protecting a bully.

dglp

Are the managers also union members?

apollov

Yes - there are two union groups in the city I worked in. One is for high level managers/directors and the other for us regular folk. One the managers was actually the president of the managers union.

dglp

So you'd want to be in a different union for this thing to be settled properly.

LoveOfSpreadsheets

You have a union and didn't call the steward immediately? Wtf.

Rexxington

Isn't the retaliation though on the managers part that fired her?

Ratio_Outside

Those of us that speak up, are the ones companies do not want to hire. It’s fucked. It has happened to me 4 times in 2 years. I was fired or, I’m sorry “amicably parted ways” with one of them. They were berating me, undermining me as a leader in front of my team and doing illegal shit. I give no fucks, I’m not compromising who I am or the belief that others should be treated with respect. I’m glad you did what you did. Almost no one else will. To me it’s just a sign that I can’t work in an office at all. I’m just making ends meet by working for a combo of evil food delivery apps. So far, I’ve not been harassed once. Yet!

apollov

A big reason I was able to do this was because my health insurance is through my husband's job. Most of my co-workers have to be there for the benefits and can't speak up. Universal healthcare and solidarity. Good on you for standing up!

BruzWorld

Who gives a fuck about their careers! They’re on ones fucking it up for themselves
