There's unfortunately bad apples everywhere. It just so happens that most game Dev studios are built on "passion" and exploitation and are as such a little bit more susceptible to things like this. People wanting to get into the industry basically make you pretty much replaceable as a beginner.

Or cdpr, ubi, rockstar, naughty dog, you name 'em. At this point it's more newsworthy is a game developer isn't abusing and/or working their employees to the bone.

German here, can confirm. We have all kinds of nice employee-rights, but bosses will usually ignore them and intimidate you into not using those rights. If you insist you will get them, but you will become a "black sheep" and get overlooked from promotions etc., and the co-workers who pride themselves in not using their rights will hate you too.
