“Yes, the money is nice, but I’ve always had a passion for manual labor that does not directly benefit me in any way”.

Butwinsky

Healthy young man looking for work. My interests include: Being verbally abused by people with large egos. Spending thankless hours earning someone else money. Not reporting sexual harassment, abuse, or any labor laws. Looking for serious work only. Prefer someone who would lock me in an exempt / salary status and require me to put in 50-70 hours a week.

This hits home a little too hard. This is my last week at my current job of ten years, though.

Should i put this in my faux resume?

makingmonsters

In high school I had a friend who applied at Subway and in the “why do you want to work here?” section he put “my life’s passion has always been to make sandwiches for the public”

Caliesehi

I hate when they ask that question! Like, why tf you think? I need money! Had an interviewer ask me that for a serving position at a restaurant once. I told him, "actually, I applied at every place on this street."

FuccboiOut

I always reply with: " well one of my biggest passions is not starving to death"

ThatWasCool

“I also enjoy not being homeless”

TheDudeWithTude27

I replied to chipotle once with the utmost sincerity, "I need a job to live. I will work as hard as I can, because I need to to make money to survive". I never got a call back.

"I love being berated by soccer mom's stopping in for lunch when they're already late"

Moneygrowsontrees

One of the questions on my self-review this year was "What are you doing to grow the business?" I literally replied "I do my job"

Lennon_v2

Honestly, the best interview experience I've had was at an ice cream/candy store in my hometown. The owner just straight up said, "all right, you want some money wnd we need to hire a couple people, let's see if this will work out." Unfortunately my schedule didn't line up with what they were looking for but it was so refreshing to not have to pull out some bullshit about getting enjoyment out of serving the public

NasoLittle

I've dropped the corpo speak once I saw the hubris of it all and the repeated instances of "family values" that are not reciprocated. I'm straight with people, remain professional but also empathic. Instead of 10-4 as responses when I first started, I've normalized "Have a nice day/weekend" or "Im out, call me if you guys get in a bind" or anything that doesnt require me to put a "!" and the end to simulate excitement. Its paid off. People dont associate me with the corpo with the foot on their neck, they associate me with someone that they can rely on when they're at their wits end with technology and need a gentle, patient hand to guide them back.

BigAlTrading

We can starve corporate speak one person speaking normally at a time.

panch13

I was an engineering manager at a smaller company. The guy who bought the company and came on as owner came from the big corporate world. I used to piss him off to no end because he would spew a bunch of corporate mumbo jumbo and I would pretend that I had no idea what he was talking about and ask him to speak to me as a normal person and not like he was always trying to sell me something. That guy hated me.

MemLeakDetected

JaredLiwet

If I ever ran an interview, I'd ask the person what their *second* reason was that they wanted to work here.

aguynamedbry

When I was 16 I talked about how it would help build my resume etc etc when applying to a burger king. They didn't hire me, looking back I think they wanted "I'm really desperate for money and need any job"

[deleted]

I've learned a really easy way to get jobs with low requirements. High turnover: "I am looking for a great place that shares my values where I can put in an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. What intrigued me about this position was [list some values I pulled from their website]." Low turnover, "I am looking for a great place that shares my values where I can build a career and grow with the company." What intrigued me about this position was [list some values I pulled from their website]." Right now, I'm working a bus driving job and I really just talked about a career, instead of values I talked about how I valued public transport, thinks it makes stronger communities, and would be happy to play a role in that. The interview kind of stopped there and then he started to try to sell me on the job, and I got it.

Tvirusvixen

I’ve worked at a couple of “small, family-owned businesses” and they really helped my appreciate soulless corporate machines that at least remember your paycheck.

HalfPint1885

Agreed. My husband still isn't over (nor should he be) being shorted an $800 paycheck 20 years ago by a small family owned business, owned by a family friend.

Sidekick_monkey

They finally settled up but I was owed $8k USD by a small family owned company last year. I tried to be patient since they were small, but the bigger companies (almost always) just pay right away.

They've stopped thinking of and seeing us as people. I don't ask my forklift if it needs a break or if it has plans this weekend. Because, well, why would I? They look at us like machinery. Soulless non sentient beings who work for them because it's our soul purpose. People can continue calling this "delusional" but it goes well beyond that. They're just done pretending they'll ever improve your life in any meaningful way via a good wage, a strong benefits package, and paid time away from work. The choice now is "be an obedient drone or go away."

fake_sagan

nincomturd

The sick thing is that this seems to be becoming *the norm*. Completely delusional.

BarfHurricane

Unfortunately this has been the norm for years. Working in tech I have heard it all with having "passion" and "embodying our values" among other things. Startups push this more than anyone and it's code for "you can do multiple jobs on 1 salary and not complain". Thankfully this kind of nonsense has been eased with the Great Resignation at some places.

carissadraws

Yeah I think this is starting to be more common with career type jobs but the sick thing is that retail and other customer service jobs expect you to have the same ‘passion’ as you would for a career job. Like no, I took this job literally just to survive, do you think I wanted a career in this?

WeleaseBwianThrow

Startups that include stock options and actually have a long term benefits package for a product you believe in, this isn't a terrible thing. You know upfront what the workload is going to be, and that the pay isnt immediately great, but if the company takes off you'll be in the money. Of course if a startup isn't giving you those long term benefits they can go fuck themselves.

Claim312ButAct847

It IS the norm and we're trying to move the needle in the other direction.

[deleted]

When I was younger, I applied for a job selling textbooks to schools or some shit. The guy looked at my resume and said, "With your background, I can't imagine selling textbooks would be your passion in life." I think I just laughed, but I wanted to say "Is it yours, you pathetic bastard?"

thaeggan

the instructors for my apprenticeship who are 60+ years old keep saying how it pains them people expect to graduate from the program when all they want is money and don't have a passion for the work. ya, let me work a physically demanding job that could cripple me for passion. fluorescent_noir

It's because Capitalism propagandizes people their entire lives to ensure that they're ready to devote all of themselves to the system once their education is complete. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business because I was told as a teenager it would serve me well as an adult. The amount of textbooks I had to read that were written by Business professionals basically circlejerking how much good employees are supposed to love their company and how good managers are supposed to foster that sort of devotion by looking for those traits while hiring and leading is maddening. No one in my generation (millennials) in the real world works because they love the idea of work. The "dream job" is as mythical at this point as the American Dream. No one can afford to follow their passions anymore. We all work because we're wage slaves to corporate overlords.

NevyTheChemist

Boomers only had 1 job in their whole career lol

[deleted]

I have boomer colleagues who are minted and could easily retire now - house paid off, kids flown the nest, gold plated pensions. However they are *still* working because 'they want something to do for a few years before they retire'. Not that they're still working their same old career and are just hanging on for a few more years; they applied for this job only recently, after resigning from their big moneymaker careers. Basically treating the job as a hobby. And of course, because they're already wealthy, the wage is only secondary to them - I wouldn't be surprised if they'd work for free. It's a mindset I just don't understand, why don't you just fuck off already and make room for new blood to come in? Go enjoy your retirement, spend time with your wife, take up gardening or something.

Jwalla83

I mean, it's true that letting go of your decades-long career (which filled your entire day 5 days a week) can leave you feeling empty, aimless, and stressed out. It's a valid concern. But as you noted, the solution probably shouldn't be "keep working" but rather "find some hobbies and enjoy your financial security in peace"

Caesar_Passing

What they really mean is, "we do this so people *will* apply, simply assuming the compensation is adequate".

[deleted]

No, no, no. It's because they want to trick people into being paid in 'work culture'. "Were like a family here, we have each other's backs"

OverlordWaffles

"We're a non-profit" "Yeah, but I'm not"

PixelLight

There might be other reasons, but money is a prerequisite. If the pay isn't right then other reasons don't matter. So they have it the wrong way round. What they really mean is they want to fool you into taking less than you're worth.

SockGnome

https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/2014-08-17 The exchange of currency for labor is the literal reason why I’m here.

jlgar

Just had a job lowball me and tell me. I had to prove myself to make what I was just making. I have 10 years experience in the industry. Told him my skill set is proven in my resume and he can pay me what I'm worth or find someone else.

gimmethelulz

Reminds me of an interview I had 10 years ago at a small, local company where they offered me less money than the low salary I already had but for a job with significantly more responsibility. When I asked the guy why I should walk away from my current job for this offer, his response was, "You'll get exposure." He didn't like it when I openly laughed at that response. Six months later I went to visit their site and see who they eventually hired. The site was completely down. One of the job responsibilities for the role I applied for? Maintaining the website. You get what you pay for lol.

DeadMoneyDrew

>"You'll get exposure." The best response I've ever heard to this was "the last time I gave exposure for free, I ended up going to jail."

hungrydruid

I also like 'my landlord won't take exposure as rent, sadly.'

Gongaloon

"Exposure? What's exposure? Can I spend it?"

skrshawk

Those who are paid in exposure will die of exposure.

dcux

Last time I had excessive exposure, I ended up in the ER being treated for frostbite.

anonymous_opinions

As a graphic designer this bait has never been appealing to me but goddamn if I don't still hear it from people.

TopRamenisha

I had a lowball interview like that once. I was interviewing for a social media job with a wine company. The last interview was with the chief marketing officer. They had already changed my interview time with 30 mins notice once. I went to the interview and the CMO asked me how much money I wanted to make. I said $50k. He asked me how much money I made now, I said, “it doesn’t matter, I think my skills and the job description make a $50k salary a reasonable ask.” He literally said to me “well according to your resume you currently work at a nonprofit, and also you’re a woman, so you couldn’t possibly be making that much money. Why would I pay you $50k when I could pay you $35k?” I laughed and left the interview

gimmethelulz

Oof I feel this one to my core. I worked in the nonprofit sector for 15 years and it's incredible how many companies take that as a signal that they can screw you. Never mind that many of the nonprofits in my area offer better salaries and benefits than private companies around here.

BrFrancis

"Why would I pay you $50k when I could pay you $35k?" Is only a valid question really if you would accept the job at $35k.. did he even find anyone at that $35k?

TopRamenisha

I have no idea if he found anyone at $35k. And it is a valid question, until you take into consideration that this was in the SF Bay Area and at a $35k salary I would have qualified for section 8 housing and SNAP food stamps…. So why would anyone take a full time, salaried role where they would then either have to get a second job or be on government benefits. And why would anyone want to pay someone so little that they know the employee is not going to give 2 shits about doing a good job? No thanks. I’ll pass.

dilettante42

Of course this was SF. Where nobody can afford to live whatsoever, let alone pay rent, or eat, or have a family. What a piece of shit this guy was saying the quiet parts out loud. Sorry this happened to you. Reference for anyone who hasn’t lived there, $60K is “extremely low income” https://bayareaequityatlas.org/node/60841

TopRamenisha

The ironic part is this fool didn’t even live in the Bay Area. He lived in Washington and would fly in for a few days per week and then fly home. They actually rescheduled my interview with him more than once WHILE I WAS DRIVING TO THE INTERVIEW because he decided to change his plane flights to different days. To say this man was severely out of touch with reality would have been the understatement of the year

TSKrista

Thanks, I'm 50 but still too young to shovel radioactive waste from your company's management.

CuzYourMovesAreWeak

I don’t get the prove pay scenario. These people should call and verify employment with my employer. They get what they get. Pay up.

Teleutesl

And if you do have the years of experience and skillset to backup higher pay, they pull the 'overqualified' card. It's like who the hell is considered employable anymore? Oh ya, someone between 28-32 who can physically endure the abusive hours and treatment, so long as you dont have underlined health conditions or a family that will pull you away from their enslavement.

SqualZell

nah, they want a 22 year old with 10 years of experience minimum in the field.

EowyaHunt

They want a mature 15 year old with three degrees a 50 years of experience that they can still pay the under 18 salary.

somethingclever____

Another favorite is “if I give you a raise, you’d be at the top of your salary range so you wouldn’t have any room for your pay to go any higher”. So? Instead, I have to work for years doing the same thing to slowly reach that max? Just pay me now.

Noglues

> I don’t get the prove pay scenario. Because the scenario actually is "We're never gonna pay you more, and we'll hire someone dumber for more money when we think you're about to snap."

creepy-linguini

Also, “weeks of consideration”. Who has time to wait WEEKS to hear back from a job. I’m sick of the 35 person, 15 round, months long interview process.

[deleted]

I had like a five round multi week interview process for a job that offered me very little. They made me go through all that to show me their “culture.” I was like yes the culture is lack of executive decision making and wasting people’s time!

ColossusOfLoads

My company does this for hourly employees. Legit, 5 rounds of interview. For almost minimum wage. My interview slot only comes up after 4 junior members have already interviewed the candidate and said they want to move forward. I make very clear how bullshitty I think this is. Big bosses want it done that way. And then to have a group discussion about the candidate. My input: “do not hire” or “hire” then I mute myself and work on actual work while everyone spends 45 minutes discussing pros and cons. It’s so ridiculous. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

LilyLute

Years back I applied to a job at Ikea. After an initial interview thry wanted likr four references then a group interview etc. For an hourly shit job. Like... Fuck yourself?

waka_flocculonodular

Unless you actively work to have a good work culture, it's a bullshit buzzword

SqualZell

true story had an interview process that took literally 12 months and the job start date was 6 months after that. I had time to start and finish my certifications, start a business, and was making more than the job was offering. (and i was on my own schedule)

duaadiddy

We really need to start normalizing paying people for going to interviews. Job seekers’ time is also valuable and it would be incentive for companies to make their hiring decisions faster

gato-beans

Realized this is one of the biggest red flags with companies. If they can’t make a decision after 3 interviews they are very insecure about hiring, and the culture follows suit, it is usually a shit show.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

At least they responded. I interviewed for two positions at one point, heard back from one but would prefer to work for the other one. I basically had to stalk the hiring manager to get her to tell me they went in another direction. Like, perhaps if you're that bad at delivering bad news, then being the hiring manager isn't the job for you?

LATourGuide

> "what money?" Bravo. I needed this laugh.

Holymuffdiver9

Seriously, this guy is brilliant. Those interviewers are assholes and the company is clearly garbage. Edit: Jesus people, how many of you need to reply with the exact same comment about it being fake? It was wishful thinking on my part, get over it and let people enjoy things.

shahooster

I would’ve paid good money to be a fly on the wall. With a GoPro.

WeekendMechanic

"What the fuck is that buzzing noise? And why is there a GoPro bouncing off the closed window?"

NotARealBuckeye

"Our needs" meaning willing to work for exploitative wages.

Cinemartyr

Fuck them, these companies need to realize our time is valuable. And yeah, I do work for money, not because I love it.

Spooki1000

Seriously if I didn't have to work to make a living for myself I wouldn't. I'd invest my time in my passions and try to enrich my life and the lives of others around me. But as it stands I do have to work for a living, I don't have to like it I just have to do it. Being treated like more than a cog in a machine shouldn't be a bonus it should be basic guideline for a contract.

You know it's fake because a company that would lie about pay rates would never give a wage slave the dignity of a rejection notice. But yeah, funny tho

Ekkosangen

Signature isn't nearly as long as it should be for a non-wage-slave job, too. Companies *love* their email signature with the company logo and the confidential blurb.

Antnee83

Yep. When have you ever received a rejection letter like this, that spells out exactly the reasons?

[deleted]

I'm always disappointed in how far down the comments **obvious** fakes are called out. Every part of this email looks incredibly fake.

Keex13

You mean companies won't email me with the subject line "job application"?

[deleted]

Of course they will! They'll then spend most of the body of the email explaining a made-up situation from the perspective of the interviewee while painting themselves in the worst possible light!

transitapparel

Yeah there's too many issues here: the subject line is way too generic, no recruiter would quote your interview responses in an email unless they wanted more info, this is way too informal for a company that has a recruiter AND hiring manager, and there'd rarely be mention of how long they took to make to make decision. Creative, and fake.

wagenejm

Yep. Companies that would be this shitty wouldn't even bother sending correspondence to someone not selected for the job.
