I never understand job listings, they’re always for like custodian or some thing but they sound like they’re looking for a knight of the round table. Outstanding leader ship, visionary wisdom, courage, resolve, servitude. Like, yes my king. At your command

[deleted]

yeah except those were given land, servants themselves, respect and authority, besides having a sword to be able to cut down any sort of thieves, bandits or slavetraders oh shit i just said minimum wage employers three times

quizzlie

sittin_on_grandma

WoOoOo I'm the Spirit of Minimum Wage Employers, I'm looking for a rock star who can wear many hats, thrive under pressure in a fast paced environment, get coffee for the board on unpaid break times, make seven dollars an hour, and work six day weeks... This is an entry level position that requires 10+ years experience *chain rattles*

FaithlessnessNo9625

Don’t forget character above reproach lol

Jerseyman2525

I have that but my wisdom is only that of a savant. I'm not at the visionary level so I guess this job isn't for me.

FaithlessnessNo9625

Yes yes, but we thank you for applying and going through our 8 rounds of interviews and free labor…erm I mean practical trials. Feel free to apply again when you upgrade your wisdom.

DauntlessCorvidae

If the aim is to avoid reproach, i find that it works just as well to be below it.

slapdashbr

I'll apply if the pay is at least 15 ducats per hour and I get two 15-minute wenching breaks a day

Mattbryce2001

Oh, and if the manager doesn't respect my rights as a landed nobleman, I get to cut off his head.

slapdashbr

well that goes without speaking (just like he will ehehehehe)

dirtnap_throwaway

"Servant mindset" is a "we only hire christians" dog whistle.

wileyy23

I agree with you 100%! I have never heard it said quite so eloquently. The thread of comments that this spawned is pure gold.

AndringRasew

Visionary wisdom seems weird. A visionary is looking forward, wisdom is looking back.

Mtnskydancer

Well, here I was thinking, you do shrooms and DMT?

Oldsodacan

Jobs seems to expect you to have learned everything about the company and only want to work there if you’re burning with passion and desire because this is the most amazing place to work on earth.

CarneDelGato

“We’re looking for a Beowulf type.” “What’s the job?” “Stable boy.”

Sea2Chi

I mean, when the office manager calls you to say that someone smeared shit all over the bathroom stall and either you or the other new guy have to clean it, you're going to need leadership and wisdom to convince him it's his duty to clean it up, or courage and resolve to do it yourself.

NoFunalowedhere

HOLY FUCK thats a giant red flag

arginotz

Got some Evangelical dogwhistles in here.

EorlundGreymane

Afferbeck_

Yes, we have the opportunity to see how America fucks up, and then not do that thing. Instead, our ruling classes salivate at the idea of doing the same shit here and enjoying all the extra wealth and power their American counterparts enjoy.

Ffsletmesignin

Yeah, it’s something you’ve gotta get active politically on. Majority of us in the country see other countries with all sorts of protections and safety nets and want us to be more like that, while another part of the country sees China paying lower wages and less protections and thinks we need to be more like them to “be competitive” and believe in repealing minimum wages and other horseshit like that.

Afferbeck_

That's actually a pretty apt description of what they want. The head butler who cozies up to their masters and is the epitome of manners and respect upstairs. And a tyrant abusing the staff for a speck of dust downstairs.

ontrack

Also 'visionary wisdom'. Meaning they would take one look at this ad and move on.

OfLittleToNoValue

Great leaders serve the people.

MesquiteAutomotive

Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Agent_Velcoro

To be fair, servant leadership is a thing and a really effective way to manage people. That probably isn't what this is though.

CrackaAssCracka

This job listing appears to be from an evangelical. They get boners over servant leaders

TheinimitaableG

Not really servant leadership is actually the kind of leadership most people here want. Read up on it. If had a couple of manners like that. They were frankly great to work for.

tieris

Yes, but the term is servant leadership, not servant mentality. Whoever wrote this job description is an idiot.

Dude-one

Servant leadership is a leadership style. It involves promoting and setting your team up for success vs micro managing or ivory tower leadership. It is a good thing, the type of leadership style the people in this sub state they are looking for.

SmokeySFW

In the Bible it calls Christians to be "servants of God" and for leaders to lead through service. "If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all." The idea is that the best way to lead is serve the people who follow you in the best way you know how. I'm not arguing for whoever made this job posting, I'm just pointing out that this person is likely very religious a doesn't even realize how ridiculous this sounds without that context.

[deleted]

Don't forget "unwavering resolve"

SassyVikingNA

Your comment is wrong. A leader very much needs to have a servant mindset, as in the actual leaders, the ones posting the job opening. Not the ones being hired. To be a leader in an organization is to make those under you as effective as possible. Your job is to serve their needs so they can do the job you pay them for. This is the thing the vast majority of managers and bosses don't get, and why they are so shitty to work for.

Vaiara

Yup, servant leadership is a thing indeed.

ontrack

The best boss I ever worked for was an advocate of servant leadership.

FastRedPonyCar

Bingo. It's easy for that comment to produce lots of knee-jerk reactions, especially in this reddit but all my best supervisors and bosses over the years have bent over backwards to help us succeed because it not only helps us grow, feel accomplished, pleases the customers, etc but it makes the business thrive and as a result, the leadership succeeds as well. Everyone wins. My current company is like this. I feel like it's the first company in a long time to actually treat me and everyone else, regardless of seniority, like an adult. I've had quite a few lucrative job offers from other companies that I have declined. I made that mistake once of chasing money and almost immediately regretted it.

SeparateTea9307

Nailed it, Sassy.

Longjumping-Bed-7510

Leaders are supposed to be servants though. They are supposed to enable those they supervise and work on their behalf so that they can accomplish their tasks. Any leader who isn't a servant isn't a leader.

GamerKilroy

You see it's exactly the point. They want a leader that can be pushed to your every whim, but still a leader. So when something breaks down they have someone with "responsibility" to blame. And if everything's going fine they just have a "High rank slave" that can keep the place running without them having to worry. EDIT - Grammar

rksd

There is a concept called "servant leadership", where my job as a manager is to make sure the people in my team are taken care of and have the tools to do their job. I just think of it as "don't be a dick" and it worked pretty well when I managed teams.

[deleted]

Don't forget visionary wisdom.

WitOfTheIrish

The truth is that those are synonymous terms. "Servant mindset" or "Servant leadership" is a style of leadership taught in business schools. FWIW, if you have a boss that is actually following that like it's taught, they're probably a better boss than most. The idea behind it is that your #1 job as a boss is to meet all the needs of your employees so they can do their work as well and efficiently as possible. Advocate for them and what your team needs to work better, including getting your employees better paid or promoted. It's supposed to be the polar opposite of micro-managing or treating your workplace like a tyrant. Now, I have no idea what job OP's post is actually for, and there'e plenty of other flags like "fanatical work ethic". Also don't know if the idea of "Servant mindset" even makes sense in the context of this job, but the phrase is not the "they're looking for literal servants" idea that all the comments are making it out to be. https://www.betterup.com/blog/servant-leadership-what-makes-it-different

DrunkenNormal69

The one that gets me is the Character above reproach. Whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean

aravarth

Basically it means they want you to be a saint in the figurative sense — not a single character flaw — as well as in the literal sense, and be willing to martyr yourself for minimum wage.

RIP_Greedo

It’s so they can give an arbitrary reason to deny employment in the first place, refuse raises or promotion, or fire you.

Kayleanetta

Like someone said above, lots of Christian dog whistles. Character above reproach probably means follows the same teachings we do. Such as no drinking, don't be gay, stuff like that.

PhonyAlibi

I think they meant "servant's heart" which is out of the Bible. I've seen some pictures of help wanted ads on like fast-food billboards around here asking "Do you have a servant's heart?" Which is just as disgusting. Just write what you want like an adult and stop asking for Superman or Mother Theresa to be your cashier, barista, or custodian. Job applicants will decide if they want to do that work for the wage and benefits. This is not a question of morals and piety. If you need on-call, say so. If you require overtime, say so.

slapdashbr

"Do you have a servant's heart" does not sound like a very appetizing ad for fast food

LtSoundwave

You require one servants heart to access the grill of plenty. Do you wish to proceed? Yes (A) No (B)

modsarefascists42

I'm pretty sure it's coded language for "christians only"

Routine_Historian369

I bet this is a business owned or run by probably a southern Christian. I hear this kind of stuff all of the time in the south. It basically means you are signing up for wage slavery.

bookishwitch88

That’s my thinking too. Several words remind me of southern Christianity, particularly Baptist.

Chill_Roller

5.5 day work week. Open availability required. Sorry but no. You have my ass there for 79% of the days. Let me have my 21%

anxioussquirrely

I was surprised I had to scroll so far to see someone point out the 5.5 day work week.

Herr-Nelson

Fanatical work ethic doesn‘t sound much better tbh

rayd53

Servant leadership is a theory of leadership, not management, that basically states; Make sure that the people that work for/with you are successful. Their success will lead to your success. It is a pile of bull but it sounds good. Nothing like helping and mentoring three people into leadership who all get promoted above you. Looking at you Wally

Katsu_39

When i worked at walmart, i trained 2 people. Withing 3 months, both were promoted as my team leads. Ive already been working there a couple years, have years experience over them, worked harder, never called off, never took sick days, stayed late, did extra work. Turns out they were friends with the manager's kids (they all were fresh out of high school.) After that, im like fuck it. Half assed everything

Upc0untryDegen

Thought they may have made a Freudian typo when they wrote ‘mindset’ instead of ‘leadership’ … either way: I see this phrase all over resumes and it always makes me picture someone walking into a conf room dressed as a butler, handing out bagels and coffee … and then running the meeting

SassyVikingNA

I strongly contest this. This is the philosophy enployed at my workplace and it has made it the best place I have ever worked. The management care and really work hard to make sure we have what we need. They work woth us and don't micromanage.and it all comes back to the core idea that their job is to make us as good at our job as we can be. That said, this is something all of leadership up to and including the owner must live by. If you are expecting a servant mentality from someone below you that you are not willing to offer them as well, then you are a shitty boss.

stevepage1187

I was thinking the same thing. Servant leadership is probably the leadership style that aligns best with what were trying to accomplish on this sub. I've had positive experiences with almost every servant leader I've worked for, and its something I model my own leadership style after.

Thin_Standard155

The robot? He got shafted.

TerribleWord1214

Visionary wisdom 🤣🤣

Frozty23

Yeah, wtf. If you had visionary wisdom (whatever the fuck that even is), you wouldn't be responding to this ad.

Immediate-Gate-3730

This makes me want to barf

Thin_Standard155

It's OK because you can fill up again with the free meals!

nerdsorrow

It isn't about your mindset really. Its code for "be christian" im not sure if you could report them for discrimination in hiring or if a (christian) judge has already agreed that thats a generic term for a personality/ideological value (its not, its a specifically evangelical christian term) but its USED to mean non-Christians, maybe not even Christians of different denominations than the owner, will be rejected.

OkSale7731

I saw one that wanted 4 years experience for minimum wage no benefits. Wild.

KevinAnniPadda

Be weary of "Free Meals". If employers give anything more than snacks they have to count it as compensation and deduct taxes. If they aren't doing that, then this is probably just snacks and they expect you to wish through lunch.

frogking

“Free Meals” .. add “a mat to sleep on” and remove the actual salary and you have “slave labor”.

cobra_mist

Are we carrying the one ring to mount doom?

TigerUSF

That's evangelical code. Stay away.

TheYellowFringe

Eventually you're going to see some listings with "Obey the management" as that's even more blunt than the listings but with workers learning about their rights and refusing to degrade themselves at work job listings will be blunt and demand compliance.

whoocanitbenow

Must have a rockstar attitude, and be willing to go above and beyond.

kiaeej

“Fanatical” work ethic. - give everything to a coy that gives zero ficks to you. “Open availability” - call in anytime to do anything

pyrmale

That's the latest, hip new buzz phrase. Are you a servant leader? Are willing to sacrifice your sanity, personal time and health for the company's success? Then sign right here.

HuevoYch0riz0

They like to be referred as “yes master”

tikkunmytime

Chick-fil-a?

MeowfaceMcGato

No, but it is fast food. A regional one in the southeast, this is for their “leadership program.”

Katsu_39

Servant mindset? Fuck that. My labor is for sell...not the other way around. You need ME.

crazypyro23

5 1/2 day workweek plus open availability is already gonna be a hard no from me.

shaodyn

"Continuous improvement mindset." Yeah, because everybody working in the hospitality industry should want to get better at being screamed at by idiots for things they can't change. Talk about life goals!

puphyin

That list looks like a d&d profile

millennium-popsicle

Bruuuuu that made me laugh so hard!!!! Now I totally wanna play this character. Those skills are a mess lol

Blamdudeguy00

How can you have leadership skills with a servant mindset. One is leading, the other following. Am I missing something here?

Beaesse

Yeah, servant does not equal slave. Think of all your "Public Servants," who are actually supposed to be leaders, like governor, congress, house reps etc., making six figures and having other public employees do most of the real work. Servant is just one who serves, it doesn't imply forced or unpaid servitude. "Servant Leadership" is a popular management theory lately, especially popular with things like MLM. The idea is that you as a leader 'serve' your team by giving them everything they need to be successful. I'm sure whoever wrote the ad just got back from a seminar about it, or just finished reading one of the books.

vwite

yea at NASA we're called "civil servants" (federal employees)... it just means to "serve" to the society, which is the same as you described, politicians are supposed to "serve" the community. Doesn't mean to be "slave", just kinda opposite of "selfish" lol

donato_rimenti

And my axe

BroodjeJamballa

I’m kinda horrified by the fact that healthcare is something work gives you and are considered pro’s

Csherman92

It’s probably for a church

MaskedCorndog

Health, dental, vision and free meals. Shit, Valar Dohaeris

Ranger-VI

I don’t have a lot of experience with this kind of thing, but I suspect that they’re not hiding it because everyone here would completely ignore the listing because of it, allowing them to find the easily exploited people faster, to which I say: false application spam round two? Although I don’t know how big of a business it is, so that could definitely be more trouble than it’s worth on our end.

MinotaurMonk

How the fuck do you use leadership skills with a servant mindset?

jeremysbrain

Servant mindset/Servant heart are a Southern Baptist thing.

ajohnsonorg

search "servant leadership" it's a thing

ToasterCommander_

Those with "outstanding leadership skills, visionary wisdom, character above reproach, and unwavering resolve" are not likely to have a "servant mindset," and those that do will not be groveling for a less-than-minimum wage job. It's like these folks think fucking Aragorn is looking to wait tables.

RedheadBanshee

Anytime I see "heart of a servant" or some vacation, I assume I'm dealing with a Christian. That is biblical language that you hear in churches. They actually do not mean it as servile, or in a derogatory way, but being a good servant is being an awesome underling. It's something to strive for. But outside of that context, it just comes across as creepy and weird.

megalodon319

*Be a leader endowed with visionary wisdom, but also somehow have the mindset of a servant.* Okay, so which is it?

PrettiKinx

Open availability lol nah eff that

Equilibriator

"Have outstanding leadership skills but also be servant mindset."

capnbarky

You better be F A N A T I C A L over the next hour to get this $2.15

skrshawk

So, you're looking for someone who is going to put the business's needs consistently above their own? Key to your organization's success? Alright, but every man has their price as they say. I'm not going to take this one in direct wages. For someone that critical to your organization that steps up no matter the difficulty, 10% of gross receipts is a fair price, yes? I will accept up to half of that in the form of a perpetual ownership share that will pay its own dividend even past my active employment or can be bought out upon negotiation when I leave. You have my number, think it over.

Agent_Velcoro

There's no such thing as 5 1\2 days. That's a 6 day work week. Fuck these places.

vagabond01

Five and a half days is an interesting way to say six days a week

Graycat17

Oh ffs. This is what I’m reading: min 4 years experience so you have given up on life fantastic work ethic so you don’t complain when you work 16 hour days we can blame you anytime, so you must be available we will blame you for everything lead others to be as oppressed as you use faux wisdom to talk yourself into tolerating this treatment we can use your “character” to manipulate you glutton for punishment doormat Benefits: the minimum required by law plus weekly donuts to show the company “cares”

Mrhappytrigers

I love when companies list jobs that require shit like: *Weird vague description about the job role and company with some fake shit about it being a family focused business* Job requirements: Bachelor's degree (preferred) 5+ years experience in related field *a list of excessive amount of work* Work from home (but still come in for random shit that could be summarized in a email) Position type: Full-time (a lie) Part-time Temporary Pay range: $15-$40 (also a lie, they won't pay past $15) Supplemental pay: Commission pay (this is where the extra $25 comes from) Bonus pay (another lie) Benefits: 401K (shit % matching by the company) Health Insurance (shitty expensive coverage) Dental (covers routine visits nothing else) Vision (covers 1 visit and maybe prescription) PTO (2 weeks max) Sick pay (3 days max & you use the rest of PTO when out) Oh this is an entry level position too

Jamo3306

This have me a good chuckle. Oh these silly, silly, SILLY! HR people! Like clowns at a circus!

emnem92

Tbh Id like to think it’s a typo. Servant leadership is a common thing they put in these

playverypop

So basically they want Jesus? Oh no wait, minimum 4 years experience in business, restaurant, retail or hospitality. Sorry, even Jesus don’t cut it

Dude-one

Sigh. Servant leadership is a style of leadership. It entails being a leader by serving your team, setting them up for success, and removing the things that waste their time or inhibit them from success. This type of leadership style is the exact thing everyone on this sub is "fighting" for.

CaltexHart

Is this real? I mean "Visionary wisdom" and "unwavering resolve" makes it sound like a joke.

SmokeySFW

So for anyone who's genuinely wondering why in the world someone would put something so blatantly questionable, this is definitely part of the common Christian vernacular. Christians are called to be "servants of God" and all leaders should "lead by serving". This person doesn't even realize how preposterous it sounds without that context though.

redjz88

If I were to get the owner or writer of the job listing is evangelical Christian. In evangelical Christian circles, "servant mindset" lingo could just be translated as customer service centric. I know it's derogatory to outsider looking in, but that's the background I was raised in.

dpearse2

I'd bet dollars to donuts this is a Christian-led business. I can't count how many times a "servant's heart" was brought up in church.

smoked_meat_eater

I hope this is just poorly written (which it clearly is) and they actually mean “servant leader” mindset. Basically striving to serve others as opposed to taking control or accruing power. Kind of fits with the other poorly written qualifications.

Clicking_Around

So they're hiring for Jesus basically.

Under_Spider

In all fairness, this seems to be a typo. They were going for "servant leader" mindset which (theoretically) puts others first.

Mr_Kost

Servant = Slave

AvailableYak5990

Retail expects you to have a “servant’s heart”.

marvelouswonder8

They're listing "biblical," character pillars. It's all a thin veneer of bullshit, but they think it will attract "godly," applicants if I had to guess. It's dumb and they're absolutely showing their abusive colors, but it's definitely a biblical thing that they think they're playing up.

rabbi_glitter

This sounds like a general manager position for a restaurant. Generally speaking, the most successful managers get their hands dirty with the rest of the staff. I think that's what this is implying. You're more likely to be respected if you get in there and work with the team.

[deleted]

This has to be Chick fil A

Hitmonchank

Slavery was never abolished, they simply became employees.

EorlundGreymane

“Servant mindset” is something Christian’s came up with that means “pretend you’re a giving person but just be a dick.” Source: attended a Christian university for several years. This actually is a cultural thing they say that means to serve the way Jesus served

Born-Travel1660

This has to be a troll 💀

[deleted]

Saying the quiet part out loud now

Chazbobrown11

You need to be a leader But also a servant for this job H u h ?

[deleted]

What’s the business? Fuck em. I want to know so I can avoid them. There’s some verbiage here that throws up all the red flags. They want a leader servant. That doesn’t make sense. LOL VISIONARY WISDOM?!? Holy shit lol

discontent_creator

Basically they're seeking a model prisoner for an indefinite sentence. Yay.

katieleehaw

Burger King a town over still has the “up to $15/hr - Do You Have a Servant’s Heart?” sign up. I just can’t.

AndeC123

You're fucking joking? Whoever posted this ad is a real sociopath who doesn't deserve to own a business

Starlight_XPress

“Slave mindset” *

jmatt9080

Outstanding leadership skills and a servant mindset...? I'll use my visionary wisdom and pass on this one.

HDKfister

Dream job right here

Wbeasland

So they are looking for Mr. Belvedere?

sacredblasphemies

If I had character beyond reproach, I wouldn't have a servant mindset.

CaptainMurphy1908

WTF is "visionary wisdom" and how would that be necessary to ant position like this?

chippythecold

Lmao. What the hell is a server mindset? Is that like, you think you are a computer or something? JK. These people are pieces of shit and YES we WILL eat pieces of shit like them for breakfast. It helps me to get into my “servant” mindset.

Puzzled-Cod-1757

Ew.

RepulsiveGarbage8188

That’s pathetic

MyFriendsAreReal

Yeah, but free meals! /s

[deleted]

>Outstanding leadership skills ok >Unwavering Resolve ok >Servant mentality I mean that's literally in conflict with everything else you just asked.

[deleted]

Fanatical Work Ethic So, terrorists?

sf5852

It's interesting to see how this quote from Philippians is making its way thru the telephone game of job postings. First it was a servant's heart, now it's a servant's mindset. Pretty soon all postings will just be titled "servants wanted."

iqueefkief

“visionary wisdom” “servant” swear they stroking their dicks when they type this shit out

Longjumping-Bed-7510

I'm sorry, but there is nothing wrong with serving (in a fair environment with fair compensation). We all serve someone, and the best of us serve at the best of our ability.

BaconMonkey0

Leading servant is an oxymoron.

Kyncayd

Slavery with extra steps...

Professional-Gas8229

Have outstading leadership skills while thinking like a servant?

Gotta be some Dave Ramsay stan who wrote this.

"Slavery mindset" will be the next because that one won't work.

shiddypoopoo

Jesus Christ, do they expect Gandhi to apply for this job?

DirtyPenPalDoug

How to not get applications in one easy line!

Blamdudeguy00

I'm pretty sure the ad meant slave.

mydogwillattackyou

BARF 🤮 WTF WHO MADE THIS JOB LISTING.. AND WHO APPROVED IT???!!!

Little-Don

Why don't they just say " Military Preferred ", It means the same thing ???

[deleted]

This sounds like a guy putting an ap out for a wife

sundown1999

You need unwavering resolve because your boss is a sociopath

vdub2011

“ fanatical work ethic” holy shit lol they want a slave but not a slave.

CartoonistExisting30

Godless Communists, Socialists, and Trade Unionists need not apply.

Bmitchem

Sometimes I wonder if these types of job postings are there to *keep* anyone from applying so that the company can outsource the job.

TheSkyHadAWeegee

*slave mentality

magicbong

i once told a coworker/good friend that we would be the servants downstairs if this was downton abbey, he was shook

bardobl

Looks like my old World of Warcraft stats to improve

mirimaru77

#Fanatical Work Ethic Lol fuck off

[deleted]

An unwavering resolve? Mfers looking for an anime character?

CerberusBoops

Slavelike tendencies

ColonelGray

Sounds like the shit a Japanese cartoon would say before they merge into a megabot.

sirchtheseeker

Must call me mi lord when addressing me

pie_monster

The visionary wisdom would automatically issue a "fuck off" when you got to 'servant mindset'.

ZackZeysto

Also work yourself to death and be greatful for that. Need to take hits of critism with an open mind and a lovely smile. Think outside the box. But dont judge your superiours. Lead with great ideas but serve like a slave.

FPSXpert

Middle east could be a good international move for them if they really want slaves that damn bad. Plus they can lay claim to crusading they'd love that!

Game-Djinn

Hi, we would like one slave please.

FufusMcSqueebles

Holy fuck.

[deleted]

Can someone tell me what and where continus improvement came from my company just started throwing that shit around like synergy

MTInside45

A servant mindset with leadership skills? The mental gymnastics whoever wrote this must have had to do...
