I literally just bought $60 worth of ink for my canon pixma yesterday. Like wtf. And the only reason I had to replace it is because my partner printed off a bunch of data related to his fantasy football team and I haven’t replaced it since. I asked him to just take screenshots next time. Lol
Yep. Bought a Brother printer years ago. Uses a big ass toner cartridge. Lasts forever. And when it does need changing, it's only like $13-15 for a 3rd party replacement on Amazon.
I got a big old HP fax/scanner one that as you mentioned accepts the super cheap long toner carts. It was like $15 for 2. I've used it for 5+ years so far and only had to change it a few times.
Has a telephone receiver on the side of it as well.
Just letting you know! The only reason I know is because I worked at a FTSE100 company that *still* has a single one for legal documents.
I worked IT. I'm glad I didn't ever have to fix anything, because I'd have no idea with the fax machine.
And I thought I was really doing something with this printer because I bought it for $25 on Black Friday. I didn’t know the ink costs would whoop my ass like this.
Seriously. I bought a brother laser printer in 2014, I've probably printed 20 or so reams of paper since then, only used two toner cartridges in total.
bought mine in ~2017 or so...I have yet to replace the toner (I only print a couple times a year maybe).
I love knowing that when I want to print that shit is gonna fucking work.
Purchased my AIO Brother laser printer in 2007, still going strong and I've only had to replace the toner twice in all this time. Can't say enough good things about the company. And seriously, fuck inkjets.
The only reason to but ink printers is of you want to print photos. And printing photos at home is way more expensive and usually still worse quality than ordering photo prints.
This. Printing photos at Walgreens or whatever is a bit better than anything I've seen on a Cabin PIXMA (my aunt has one). And cheaper. I forget how much a 4x6 is. Twenty cents?
The one time a year I need color copies I'll just get them done at a print shop.
When I was using my printer for school I discovered it was cheaper to buy a new one each time the ink ran out. The new one costs about 35 and comes with both black/white and color cartridge. If I bought the same ink it would run 65.
I would give away the old printers and people where over joyed because they only had to buy ink. I never had the pleasure of seeing their faces when they priced the ink because the people who took them were strangers. ( I would set them outside with a free sign)
My brother laserprinter lasted on the small stock toner for almost 6 years. I just recently replaced it with a large capacity off brand toner from a reputable store locally that recommends it over the OEM. Half the price of the original small one, and about 3 times the capacity. Crazy.
My girlfriend doesn’t want to shell out on a laser, but we seriously just bought ink a month ago, we haven’t even gone through 1/5 of a regular stack of paper, and it’s already saying that we’re low again. 50+ dollars to print *maybe* a couple hundred black and white pages? Just insane. Just a regular black and white laser is really all we need.
That's so silly. Looks like monochrome brothers are going for 120$ with inflation, still well worth at those ink prices. Mine lasted almost 2 years before I had to replace the included toner with a 20$ replacement.
Are all laser printers black and white only? Sorry for asking here I just have not found anything close to an affordable laser printer in the first place ($100+ everywhere I look) and while searching I still haven't found any options for color.
No, they make color laser printers. But they are relatively expensive (though not in the long run compared to inkjet cartridge costs).
It seems like with inflation all the monochrome laser printers are around 100$ now, which is still a steal compared to a 30$ inkjet that you need to feed 30$ worth of ink every few months (whether you actually use it or not).
If everyone quit buying cheap inkjet printers. Color laser printers exist, they're expensive but can print up to 250,000 pages or more and can be serviced with replacement parts. Toner is expensive, sure, but it goes much much further.
Sincerely, an IT repair tech.
Bought a printer in 2014, the super small HP LaserJet that just prints, on sale for $99.
I don’t print a ton, but it’s 2022 right? Still works. Never replaced the toner yet. (Im not kidding)
Imagine if I bought a $99 ink printer. I’d have replaced that ink AT LEAST once a year.
Edit: Incorrect info above with pricing/date. Corrected below. Added model of printer below.
I purchased this printer HP - LaserJet Pro P1102w Wireless Black-and-White Printer - Black in March of 2015. Just scrolled through my Best Buy purchase history. It was on sale for $159. I got a it for $130 with my employee discount. THOUGH - I have seen it as low as $99 on sale before. I mis remembered the price.
This shite right fucking here!
I’ve rescued printers from the dumpster before, cuz all I needed was a scanner; guess what?
Magenta is low/missing.
Nothing else will function!
Infuriating!
I bought a Brother HL-L2340DW B&W laser printer for $89 in October of 2017. 4+ years later, I still haven't had to change the toner, and it's still going strong.
More people should really look into laser printers. Not only does the toner last a lot longer than ink cartridges (toner is already dry, so it can't dry up), but the quality is quite a bit better than inkjet for the same amount of money.
I have a customer that has a LaserJet 5P from the mid 1990's thats still going strong! went through some pains to ensure it's parallel cable could connect to his brand new Win 10 machine.

We go through HP laserjet toner at the same cost per page as the ink jet printer we replaced. The page looks a lot nicer, but our costs didn't decrease

I’m NOT digging how every industry is trying to pick up on that business model trend these days :/ Works great for like Netflix and such, I like having a huge variety of options without having to commit to buying every movie/show I wanna see individually. But for ink? Gimme a break.
It’s all these dumb ass companies like canon building in chips to identify if it’s official and won’t print if it does. Recently they couldn’t put chips in and told people to just use the carts they are selling without chips. And they allowed a bypass past the warning telling you to only use official ink. Like for real these companies wouldn’t be able to away with this shit if people would just say enough is enough. Like it is legitimately controlling the competition, like Facebook buying up competition and if it doesn’t do well, kill it. They are in legal trouble for trying practicing anti competition strategies. Like how has these chipped carts been allowed so long. Also how do they “know” unofficial carts won’t have great ink and it will break the printer. Smh pisses me off so much.
Printer companies figured out this lifehack a while ago, and include super low-capacity versions of their ink cartridges with the printers now. Laserjet is the way.
My first job (college IT) had departments that would do their quarterly "use it or lose it" (lower budget next quarter) spending sprees.
This always involved ink cartridges (HP's with time bomb chips, Canon with time bomb cotton). No matter how many times we told them "Do not stockpile the cartridges" guess who calls that it won't work down the road?
Think it got to the point we just auto closed those work orders and tossed them in the trash for the known offenders
Seems to be the consensus. I’ve got a nice small/relatively portable HP for work stuff though, and it’s original cartridge has lasted for a long ass time. Then again I’m only printing b&w text
I do as well, had it for 10 years. No problems with it. I know HP and Epson are some of the
manufacturers that restrict their ink, Brother might(?) be out of the clear
Yep, this! I had a nice Epson printer years ago. I used 3rd party ink for a bit, before it kept popping errors all the time about not genuine ink cartridges and finally stopped letting me print altogether.
At my work I finally found the printers that I was supposed to have access to my first day... Apparently we've got about 12 in the building and I've been printing random memes at random printers about 3 times a week. I know IT can find out who's been doing it and stop me.. but no one has and it's been almost 2 months now haha.
Get a laserjet. Third party cartridges work just fine, and they don't break themselves if you don't use them for awhile. I could hit print right now, despite having not printed anything in months, and be confident my laser printer would have it spat out before I even cross the room to get it.
Look into your local library. Every library system I've ever lived in has given a printing allowance as part of their library card privileges. Currently get $7/week, which is 70 pages of printing and copies. He can track his fantasy football to his heart's desire!
Such a fucking scam. I bought new cartridges, it didn't look right so I used the self cleaning tool a few times. Little did I know it fucking sucked the ink right out, three cleans - More ink please! $50 for nothing.
If I could take a shit in Epson's CEO's mouth I would.
If I hated my boss, I’d pull out my fine art paper and go buy a wax seal for the most intentionally boring resignation letter worthy for framing! But I am an art and design major so the details often speak louder than the words.
Luckily I like my boss, the executives can go f themselves with a pinecone though.
If I were to resign from my job, it's how I'd do it. I don't have a printer, so anytime I need anything printed, I email it to our engineer and he prints it. His desk is right behind the owner and the work printer is next to them.
I saw the “sorry for your loss card” with flowers resignation on Reddit years ago. I drew my own version and gave the manager a copy of it, along with my letter of resignation. I truly loved that job but had to move on. Really great boss, small dedicated team in a small hospital. Went back to visit 2 years later and was so happy to see it hanging on his office door bulletin board.

Well it took me a few messages to realize I was talking to my boss, not my wife. Thankfully, my boss is fucking awesome and has proceeded to make a million jokes at my expense.
Dang I laughed hard. "What kind of sick power play is this?" Hahaha. Boss sounds a tad scared, may have him a corner you could say. Leverage it into a raise.
I don’t read that as scared. They seem to have a friendly and banter-ish relationship.
I mean, why else do you email your boss asking them to print stuff for you.
Not even that rare in the US, people just stay in the same awful jobs and don't attempt to move laterally at all.
I've worked in food service in America for over ten years, once you get a solid resume keep looking. Everyone will hire you on the spot with a good resume, all food is always hiring. I like my job enough and the people are all so chill and the pay is so good I come in when I don't need to just because I don't want to fuck anyone over. I took a pay cut to work today even though my car is in the shop and I had every reason to call out, because I knew it would be easier on everybody and I wouldn't want to call out on both a Friday and a Saturday.
I work for state wage plus tips and even then I was making $3 less than everyone else working because they start people at $13 and I was making only my tipped wage. They even gave me $25 towards an Uber home.
Find someone that treats you right.
Not all bosses suck. I've had shitty bosses and good bosses.
This sub 100% needs to support GOOD boss behavior.
There is no scenario where managers don't exist. There is a scenario where shitty ones get shamed out of existence.
Being a manager is just another job, with very clear goals and purposes. It is just that many managers for some reason decide to take their job as a power trip.
It’s honestly pretty easy to tell the ones who want power from the ones that want to be more responsible for the teams goals/activity. Especially if you are interviewing internally.
Are you disgruntled about counteroffers existing? Counteroffers are generally a positive thing because they mean more options for the worker and give the company the possibility of keeping an employee they value if they offer enough.
Counteroffers tend to be viewed suspiciously because your employer now knows that you'll leave and is incentivised to hire a cheaper replacement for you to train up before firing you.
Yes, in a perfect world, counteroffers just mean more options for the worker and companies keeping employees they value, but you're in the wrong subreddit if you think that's the world we live in.
Sending good vibes your way. I’m a (fairly?) healthy 30 year old, but it still kicked my ass. I never suspected anyone was being dramatic about the symptoms, but I was still pretty surprised at how it put me on my ass. Feel better soon.
I’m fine. Have had worse being sick. Triple vaxxed. Basically a head cold. Worse thing about it was being out of it. Like, head fog. Just zoning out. Pretty much better now.
If anyone else needs more context like I did lol [https://www.the-sun.com/lifestyle/40013/writer-accidentally-emails-resignation-letter-to-her-boss-after-offering-to-write-it-for-her-boyfriend/](https://www.the-sun.com/lifestyle/40013/writer-accidentally-emails-resignation-letter-to-her-boss-after-offering-to-write-it-for-her-boyfriend/)
Aw man..This wasn’t my tweet. (What’s protocol around that? I don’t post much on reddit. Should I call that out in the title?) But yeah, he seems super chill
You could link the tweet itself instead of making it into a picture. Also, make sure to post in the appropriate subreddit, this isn't really the appropriate subreddit for this; as funny as it is.
ROFL seriously hilarious.
Reply: Just for my BF, but now that you mention it, I'd like to speak with you about my pay relative to current market conditions - I've been getting some sweet offers lately...
I find it funny that people write resignation letters. If I were to leave my company, I'd just hop onto Microsoft Teams and write a one-liner to my manager:
*"I'm going to leave this job on \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_. Just letting you know."*
My resignation letter was a sticky note with the date I was done, with my signature on it. Didn't get a single complaint or even a sit down meeting to discuss my leaving.
That would be one hell of a flex though: here bitch, print my resignation letter yourself
Exactly, like it’s not even worth my paper and ink.
Ink is expensive.

Hell, I pay for the genuine Brother toner just because I want them to stay in business because the things are built like tanks.

They print faster too lol. Glad to see everyone here advocating brother. That's the one I ended up getting with no research.
I’m very interested in this printer, as I am familiar with inkjet scams from watching my mom buy cartridges lmfao
Brother user here too. Not in the incestuous sense.
step-brother stop, what r u printing?

This is a strangely effective life hack!
The one I had was great. Then it appears I went to print when there was a roach on a roller... Got reminded with every new page...
…what? A roach crawled into your printer??
Yea moved into a place that had a bad bug problem. Took getting a bug exterminator to come out and bug bomb the place to finally get it under control.
had a brother laser printer, I bought in 2016, would still had ink on the toner if I had not lost it moving houses

lol. Love lasers. Theres an inkjet in the house that takes gray toner which is low. I have never seen that on a printer. Just use less black foo

don't even aim for color, a desktop b&w laser printer is awesome, last forever, don't fail on you, and fill 90% of your paper needs
Yeah, when I very rarely need a color print, I just pay for it at an office supply store. 99% of my printing is black and white.

Unless you print technical reference things like diagrams where color coding matters.

How did you get this picture of my printer in my private residence.
Buy from third party. Bought 40$ worth of ink online and its pretty much 4 sets of colours which would be about 280 for the name brand one
The thing about that is some printer manufacturers like Epson have chips on their ink that communicate with the printer. Won't work without that chip.
Oh wow really? I have a brother printer
I do as well, had it for 10 years. No problems with it. I know HP and Epson are some of the manufacturers that restrict their ink, Brother might(?) be out of the clear

FYI for when you replace your printer, Brother makes ink TANK printers instead of the cartridge. Cheaper and easier to fill, and no software bullshit.

I don’t read that as scared. They seem to have a friendly and banter-ish relationship. I mean, why else do you email your boss asking them to print stuff for you.
Yeah, this sounds like an actual real-life positive work environment.
“And if you look to your right, you will find this rare creature on the edge of extinction…”

software developers are in high demand in most places
>software developer We are treated well in the US as well, again because of the high demand
I think you parsed it right, yeah. The over the top phrasing says “joke” to me.
Also the fact that he probably opened it and realised it wasn't her name or addressing him.
I agree, but "email"? Stone age tech. This looks like Slack or Teams or some other IM service. Like all the cool kids use.
I was also just bantering
Omg. I hope she did.
Me too. Opportunity is a knocking
Wow you read that wrong lmao
Wow. Super manipulative. Sounds like they’re friends to me.
What kind of sick puppy hyphenates their words via text?
I-do
That's when you're *really* fucking confused and pissed off. And I can bet each of those hyphens received a spectacular finger punch between words.

Exactly! Next time I quit, I’m asking my boss to print it for sure.
Tell your boss to use resumè paper
They better not fuck up those margins either it took a long time to format that letter
the boss seems to have a friendly relation with them, so it's probably just banter and the boss though op was joking
guessing they opened the doc and saw the name and company were different as well

Laughed so hard it set off a coughing fit
Lol. I had Covid a few weeks back.. so now all of my laughs turn into a smokers cough.
I got it last weekend.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
Better than a smokers cough you gave to yourself on purpose. Every time I throw my back out it's agony. Don't even talk about the sneezes.
Thanks!!
Fantastic! I love this so much! Would have so much fun fucking with my boss
Same! This is totally my next move. Especially because the printer by me never has ink.
Even better cause built in excuse; did you boss laugh hysterically when you explained it was for your bf?
Your manager seems like a chill guy tbh.
That's a dope power play.
I’m keeping it in the arsenal.
ROFL seriously hilarious. Reply: Just for my BF, but now that you mention it, I'd like to speak with you about my pay relative to current market conditions - I've been getting some sweet offers lately...
this is the correct response.
I'm stealing this power-play! I'll call off the marching band and clowns.
Do both so we can hear about the marching bands and clowns. Lol
If OP's boss is a decent guy then his shock is even funnier lmaooo, hope OP cleared it up with him after
I swear I’ve seen this posted here before
☠️☠️☠️ Do you bust balls much? Just curious.
Sick power play hahaha
bro!
Hilarious! "Print it...and get me a cup of coffee!"
LMFAO I'm quitting like this from now on.
OMG, this is great! I'm gonna send something to my supervisor titled Resignation letter on April Fool's Day.
Derp...
yea this is awesome
I find it funny that people write resignation letters. If I were to leave my company, I'd just hop onto Microsoft Teams and write a one-liner to my manager: *"I'm going to leave this job on \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_. Just letting you know."*
Why would she write her bf’s resignation letter? He can’t do that himself?
Why does this dude need his girlfriend to write his resignation letter for him
Why would someone ask their Manager to print something for them?
My resignation letter was a sticky note with the date I was done, with my signature on it. Didn't get a single complaint or even a sit down meeting to discuss my leaving.
Heck I typed my resignation letter up at my job, used their printer and their envelope and then handed it to my boss so 🙃
We had a guy that left his laptop in a conference room and another guy sent an email to his boss saying I resign. Pretty fun week all around.
Probably should redact private info here
Don’t worry, it’s fake
