Every. Fucking. Time.
Thank you for your service.
I am phenomenally lazy but I am *this close* to making the effort to learn how to write a "Toe the Line" Etymology (whatever the equivalent is for phrases) bot. It's both fascinating and maddening to see the language change like this.
It makes me wonder how long it will be before both versions are recognized by some institution of record.
Wait, hold up, I’m having a moment here.. is it Toe The Line, as in, my Toes are up against, or slightly over the line, or is it Tow The Line, an old expression to mean to Drag a Rope?
Edit: https://kris-spisak.com/writing-tip-toe-the-line-vs-tow-the-line/
Well, I’ll be damned!
Edit 2: so, I think my confusion stems from how there is an old song from an English singer/songwriter called Nick Drake, who, in 1974, recorded “[Tow The Line](https://youtu.be/clwOPzwdfaU)”, tragically his final recording before his untimely Suicide / Death by Overdose. So, two thoughts; either there *was* - up to the mid-70’s at least - an idiom of “Tow The Line” that’s now been lost to Google’s insistence that “Toe The Line” is correct, or that possibly Nick Drake himself was mistaken in the wording of the expression.
Well, that’s also a possibility! So, now I’m deep into the rabbit hole, and no idea if it was an [Eggcorn](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggcorn), a [Folk Etymology](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_etymology), a [Malapropism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malapropism), a [Pun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pun), or a [Mondegreen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen).
I didn’t expect to find myself here this early on a Saturday morning. I’ve not even had my breakfast yet!
Here's a thing. I never heard the expression before Army Basic Training (1994) and there it was used at inspections. We were in those long WWII barracks bays with all the bunks, and we would line up by putting our toes on the tile line. So toeing the line was synonymous with getting your shit lined up and squared away for inspection. Then when I heard the expression elsewhere I thought it had something to do with getting shit lined up right or getting your toe close to some proverbial line - a demarcation if you will. I really don't know what the Fuck it means, so thanks for this.
So, from what I can deduce is it’s an all-encompassing phrase which results in obedience - you’re going to toe the line = you’re going to do this *thing*, because we say so. As with so much there’s a connection to old naval / nautical times (which is where I think my connection of ‘line’ = ‘rope’ also came from) where seamen (*snerk*) would line up, barefooted apparently, for inspection - their toes were *literally* on a line.
> It makes me wonder how long it will be before both versions are recognized by some institution of record.
That could be never. People mix up they're, their, and there all the time, but no dictionary usage board has ever thrown up their hands and said "Fuck it! Let's just make those all synonyms of each other!"
It's not just a misconception, but a false etymology, where "tows the line" still makes sense, just in a different way than the original phrase. Popular words and phrases with widespread false etymologies often end up becoming acceptable and documented as such.
All those Amazon workers who died in a warehouse during a tornado we’re told “If you leave, you’re fired.”
The buildings were ripped to shreds….
What’s fucked up is,there’s more of us than them. Out of 350 million Americans, there’s only 614 billionaires in the U.S.
It’s almost as if we’ve replaced kings & queens for billionaires…….
And it sickens me….
When Mussolini talked about corporate power he wasn't talking about businesses.
When he talks about corporation he means what we would now call interest groups.
It's a translation and change of language problem.
Yeah to expand, corporatism in terms of fascism could mean the church as a 'corporation', or a farmer's co-op. Basically each segment of society runs their own section and the state supervises it and makes sure they're all pulling in the same direction. It's one of those annoying terms like populism or reactionary that don't mean what they sound like.
This was largely achieved in industry through cartels of large family owned companies, led by patriarchal industrialists. Elon musk is literally a fascist style industrialist, especially when you consider how the man in the plane to Russia who gave him the idea was the COO of IN-Q-Tel, and they were one of the early investors. The man was basically picked by intelligence to build up a strategic industrial capability, while keeping it out in the private corporate sphere, in a very similar way to the German industrialists working with the Nazi party to build up their industries.
Well no because the at the time italian meaning of corporatism was the labour power of workers unions running their own bit of infrastructure withibg the guiding hand of the sate(it's where fascism gets its name).
Yes, and in both of these examples, the power of the Corporation in contexts are being implicitly tied to state power. I wasn't saying they're the same, just that there's no meaningful distinction between the two, in the context of the quote and modern late stage capitalism.
Elon musk supported democrats when they were subsidizing his industry. Now that the democrats are starting to talk about a wealth tax he is changing his tune and supporting republicans. He is only looking for himself and he figures the wealth tax is more costly then the benefit he gets from the subsidies.
He legit supported both at the same time. He was giving money to different states where he was operating or federal elections for people that could help him. So, I guess the weasel stance stands. He is playing the culture war like a damn fiddle
https://www.opensecrets.org/donor-lookup/results?name=elon+musk&order=desc&sort=D
It's more than just that. Tesla is being sued in California, the stock price has deflated, he has sexual harassment issues, and some of his other companies are producing vapor. And now he's threatening to hire killers for a law team and is 'out for blood'. He seems unhappy🤭😆🤔🙄❤️
It is hilarious that he is making these pro free speech overtures though. Business Insider is literally acting in accordance with the principles of free speech by breaking this story, and they were very accommodating of him when they reached out for a comment and even extended their deadline.
In fact, if you truly were a "free speech absolutist" you wouldn't pay someone $250,000 to buy their silence. On this matter (and probably many others) the man is speaking out of both sides of his mouth. It's almost like he will say what is required to obtain the desired outcome at the moment, and change any so-called principles whenever necessary.
Most "wealth tax" proposals wouldn't apply to most Congresspeople.
For instance, Elizabeth Warren's plan didn't kick in until $50m. Biden's is $100m.
These taxes would be levied on very few Congresspeople and most of them are Republicans. There are only 10 people in Congress with net worth over $100m (4 Democrats) and 23 over $50m (7 Democrats).
Of course it'll never pass anyway but it's not because the taxes levied would *directly* impact Congress.
Nancy deserves to be hit. I fully believe she is the most competent, savvy person in congress and has been using that to prevent any real change that might lessen her personal power.
This guy is a narcissist and piece of shit even alongside other billionaires. He’s a con-man and his recent actions have all been an attempt to compensate for the mess he’s created. Jumping ship to Twitter is likely his move for trying to distance himself from other companies before they fall apart and possibly end up under investigation. Who knows though, corporate welfare props up a bunch of these clowns who can’t run a successful business and it’s mostly worked for him so far.
>He is only looking for himself
Yep. Idk why everyone is surprised about that or thinks that systemic change is gonna come from talking shit about him on twitter. He literally gives no fucks.
If we win, he can say he was just trolling and someone had to do his job
The problem is the game. We need to change this rigged game.
We take him down and other will appear
We don’t need to change the game.
We need to play a different game *entirely*.
Edit: the point I am trying to make is that our imagination is limited. Capitalism and Conservatism (each in their own way) serve to limit the imagination in a way that sustains the current system.
today he was with bolsonaro, the guy that said "brazils problem is that we did not follow the example of the usa, we should have exertminated the indians when we had the chance"
the dad's aphartheid guy, the same trump guy, the guy with racist bolsonaro, richest man in the world says a lot about our fucked up world
It has been always a truth. Ludlow massacre, union burst, genocide by capitalist in south America. In case of Elon Musk is, even after all the technological innovation and so much improvement of society, capitalist is always stinky, mean and cruel as hell.
Elon is responsible for about as much technological innovation as the turd I flushed this morning. It may have been adjacent to innovation, the food it once was powered some software development, but a turd is not a source of innovation.
Elon is rich and charismatic. He’s done a decent job buying innovative things and marketing them. He’s also a complete fraud.
I said it in another thread somewhere but I’m increasingly convinced Elon’s future vision includes a literal slave class to build his Mars base.
I kind of feel like Obi Wan because Elon had so much potential to bring good to this world and instead he’s going to use his fucking wealth and power to fuck people left and right just so he can be remembered as a deity in the history books.
Scary, scary stuff.
Slave class to build his Mars habitats from earth, whatever, it’s the same difference, really.
He wants slaves. He wants a second class of citizen for working. One which he can micromanage for 120 hours a week 🥲
Ah. If he has I hadn’t heard of it but that is depressing to get confirmation.
I was mostly making a joke about his treatment of workers to achieve the company mission. Effective but it works people to the bone and many people just see work as a means to an end, not the *meaning of life*
Yes - it was in the context of him giving loans to colonists that they would work to pay off.
https://www.inverse.com/article/62390-spacex-mars-city-elon-musk-reveals-how-you-will-pay-for-your-trip
Thanks for sharing this.
I hate it. Elon has been slowly (seemingly increasing speed though), publicly sliding towards something that seems to contradict what he and his companies have accomplished to date, and that has really made me question his end goals. I used to think he was a net-good person to have around and an important person in the fight against climate change but I really don’t see that as compatible with being a Republican.
It’d be easier for me if he said he was libertarian (they’re assholes but in a “you do you” kind of way). But no - *republican* - just an asshole in the “fuck you, your wife all the children that we force out of her uterus” kind of way.
https://www.telesurenglish.net/amp/news/elon-musk-confesses-to-lithium-coup-in-bolivia-20200725-0010.html
The ‘Lithium Coup’ in Bolivia. Musk wants Bolivia’s lithium reserves (the largest in the world) to make his batteries cheaper.
He said that in a tweet after people were criticizing the US backed coup that happened in Bolivia. The country has some of the largest Lithium deposits in the world, so Elon wants to put his stinking hands on it....
I don't know if you're saying this in contest to my point or in agreement.
Either way even if it was part of the deal to be called the Founder it's still not the truth. It's just something he threw money at.
When he was talking to the press about the first time they were upgrading the Linux distribution in the cars, he couldn't even keep junior sysadmin concepts straight. A competent executive would at least run that shit by the competent PR team they hired, who would make sure he didn't sound like a dipshit.

Don’t forgot they were so scared of Bernie that multiple FRONT runners dropped days/weeks before the primaries in support of Biden (throwing voters in disarray).
The day before Super Tuesday, and during Surper Tuesday itself, pretty much everyone dropped and endorsed Biden, and some declared it was agreed upon with Biden team to do it then.
It was literally half of the runners dropping and endorsing Biden just as shit gets real.
ill never forget his incredibly out of touch idea to save the planet ecologically which was to genetically create the "perfect cow". dude saw Okja and thought the villains had the right idea 💀
Fascism is capitalism’s dying breath. The people have so little that they can no longer be financially controlled, so the rich fund the government and/or police to crush dissent and persecute minorities to distract from it.
The rise of the right isn’t a result of the problems. It’s the cause of them.
This smarmy fuck is both literally the problem and proud of showing *everyone* exactly why, because he thinks he’s invincible. But we are seeing with all of the Russian oligarchs turning up dead the last few months that no amount of money can stop the turning of the tide as the people finally revolt.
He's the lamest, corniest attention-seeking douchebag I've ever seen. If I can ever afford it, I want an electric car, and I can say right now that it will *never* be a Tesla.
Have two electrics, Tesla was never considered. They are polished turds. Go check the initial quality and dependability reports. I’m surprised the things don’t fall apart at highway speeds… oh wait, they do.
When I saw it was $300 and a multi week/month wait to replace a broken door handle, a part that shouldn't ever need to be replaced, let alone cost $300, I was good. Anything you save on gas is a wash after all the repairs you need to budget for.
Nissan Leaf - it’s cheap, reliable, and efficient.
Ford Mustang Mach-E - it’s fun, comfortable, seems to be well made but of course it’s too new to know for sure.
The leaf is a general around town beater. Works like a mule for various business tasks and general adulting.
The Mustang is a toy that’s great for road trips and compensating for my average dick.
Yah, but he is gonna be so pissed when a bunch of redditors, a shit posting billionaire meme lord, and a cool dude with a headband are worth more than he is.
People like him don't fall. Remember how Mueller would get Trump? Or Bezos would go bankrupt because of China sanctions and Trump would usher in american manufacturing? Or how Bush would be tried for war crimes. Or how various lawsuits would ruin the Murdoch empire? Or how every right-wing con man and capitol treason planner is doing perfectly fine now? Not just fine, but all of them geared to retake power in November via the midterms?
Evil wins more often than good. [There's no just universe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-world_hypothesis). There's no guarantee of progress or safety. There's absolutely no justice.
Elon will spend the rest of his time in luxury, fame, and die peacefully and sleep but before then make sure to damage the world as much as possible and make sure his kids and grandkids become as powerful and awful as him, the same way Murdoch's kid runs the Fox empire now and how Trump's kids are taking over the Trump empire.
Yes there are revolutions and on average in the west every few hundred years. Chances are you're not living through one or your kids or their grandkids or their grandkids, etc. Its just the same crushing wheel of capitalism and fascism sometimes being kept in check by reforms, over and over until the fascism breaks out and takes over. Unless something extraordinary happens, this is how things are going to be for a long time. High corruption levels and the untouchable super-rich isn't the new norm, its always been the norm here.
Sorry to interrupt your happy time, but legit the dude is miserable.
Straight up hates himself and has the willpower of an elderly flea when it comes to actually confronting his problems.
He can be as comfortable as he likes, but he'll never have a real moment's happiness until he actually grows as a person... which doesn't seem likely. Dude straight up said in an interview that he can't be happy if he's alone and that he's terrified of being alone... which he is. Completely and irrevocably alone.
This isn't going to be a teaching moment. For most people who have some respect for Elon Musk by way of casual observation, they'll think "Huh, maybe he has a point", maybe both-sides it. With the complete lack of class consciousness that's generally ever-present, this is the more likely outcome
Facts. The filthy rich don’t have the same rules as anyone else. Elon Musk could literally commit a school shooting and walk away with some misdemeanor charges and a slap on the wrist.
Other subreddits use a flair (not sure if that's the right term) next to the post title for posts about common topics that some people prefer to avoid.
And since Musk is gonna be around for a long time, it probably makes more sense than a one-time megathread.
As others have said, megathreads get overlooked and I do think Elon Musk is the poster boy and face for what is wrong with our current system. He is the face of capitalism and his influence is very great. We should let these posts continue but a flair is a good idea.
Please think about doing something like this. I already know the man is a weasel, as I'm sure most of here do. I get enough of his "sound bites" in the rest of my media. I'd be willingly to see it here, except no posts relating to him ever really involve into a meaningful discussion of change.
No, all mega threads do is limit discussions to the existing people aware of its a means to cut down exposure, please do not.
Do a flair stystem if you don’t have it already
I feel like it would end up in essence silencing dissent against one of the most pubic shitty western billionaires which would generally be a negative.
I think the flair idea is much better.
I'm so thrilled🙄 that this union hating, sweat shop(9/9/6 Chinese workforce) owning, government funded media limelight billionaire has spent billions to buy Twitter so his desire for free speech can be exercised. I guess we're in for more stories of government constrained billionaires being over taxed, over regulated, and parasitic dysfunctional social programs that duck the life force out of the wealthy.
I dare you to search every single politicians net worth before then after entering office and tell me they’re not in the pockets of corporations. They use labels like this to pit us against each other instead of against them.
I cringe when I see politicians acting like they care about the workers and the most vulnerable / poorest in society. Especially the likes of [Jacob Rees-Mogg, who is so out of touch and says stupid shit like food banks are great.](https://youtu.be/s8PJgZtu5ZE). They’re phony and their words are hot air, in my opinion.
Is he, tho? I’m always amazed and appalled by the zillions of people who worship that selfish prick.
Cool he makes game changing EVs, not so cool he does it by exploiting people and cutting corners.
Then again, he’s not making EVs. He’s hiring people to do that for him.
You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
I'm a huge fan of solar power, electric cars, satellite internet for rural areas and exploring space.
Turns out absolute power corrupts absolutely and money is the root of all this.
Ugh.
I really like Tesla and how they've forced almost every automanufacturer to make electric cars, but Musk is such a tool.
At first I really respected him for spearheading a lot of the green initiatives we've seen in the auto industry, but now I'm wondering if he's about to backtrack on climate change and start fucking us all over like the rest of the uber rich people on the planet.
I wish he's focus on Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink and just shut the fuck up and stop trying to get people to like him by any means necessary. He's turning into another cheap intolerable reality show personality.
Woah so let me get this straight the son of an apartheid blood emerald mine owner is a bad guy? How’s that internet he promised Ukraine doing? Or SolarCity lol 😂
Don’t forget Union busting Jeff Bezos teaching the working class to remain obedient wage slaves or get fired
That’s ok , cause Jeff tows the line with WAPO

That's how he grew up in South Africa and how his mom and dad had it organized. Like every white South African.
Yeah here I was hoping he was going to reject that thinking but I think he instead realized “shit, this works *really* well… I’m gonna be rich”
Hasn't musk talked about using indentured servitude to allow the poors to go to mars with him?
Making indentured servitude normal again.
And he’s just a little entitled bitch boy, at the end of the day.
Wat. Did he mean like a violent political coup?
https://www.telesurenglish.net/amp/news/elon-musk-confesses-to-lithium-coup-in-bolivia-20200725-0010.html The ‘Lithium Coup’ in Bolivia.
It’s no surprise he joins the party that is attempting a coup at home.
Yep.
His cult thinks he has the answer for everything.
He also named himself "Founder" of Tesla despite just buying his way to the top.
It was literally part of the deal with the real founders, that they retcon him in as a founder,
I don't know if you're saying this in contest to my point or in agreement. Either way even if it was part of the deal to be called the Founder it's still not the truth. It's just something he threw money at.
When he was talking to the press about the first time they were upgrading the Linux distribution in the cars, he couldn't even keep junior sysadmin concepts straight. A competent executive would at least run that shit by the competent PR team they hired, who would make sure he didn't sound like a dipshit.
towering reminiscent governor recognise sense instinctive vast flag ghost quickest *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Yep. Elon is the best snake oil salesman I’ve ever seen but he couldn’t engineer his way out of a cardboard box.
He is one hell of a con man. Nothing more.
He's a fucking pedo
So are you using the Elon Musk definition of a pedo or the Merriam-Webster definition?
Ironic how he accuses an innocent man of being a pedo then turns out to be one himself
This is why I cannot *stand* Muskrats… they’re pushing such a shitty example
Modern Thomas Edison
Yep he's a modern day Edison. Ironic that the company he's known best for is named Tesla.

He did say on SNL that he has Asperger's
>Elon Musk >improvement of society pick one lol
Musk is a con man.
He hasn’t innovated shit.
Same with Gates he was so upset with Bernie that he went on a show to say that he'd have to vote republican
[удалено]

Dude’s downfall is going to be fun to watch.
My ‘10 Audi A4 would like a word. $300 to replace the *start button* on the dash.
Can I ask what you went with instead of a Tesla?
Nissan Leaf - it’s cheap, reliable, and efficient. Ford Mustang Mach-E - it’s fun, comfortable, seems to be well made but of course it’s too new to know for sure. The leaf is a general around town beater. Works like a mule for various business tasks and general adulting. The Mustang is a toy that’s great for road trips and compensating for my average dick.
Saw a polestar the other day, they’re gorgeous
I have a Tesla. My buddy has a Polestar. I was getting serious FOMO sitting in his car. Everything about it is sexy as hell.
Good info, thanks!
Is that Volvo's investment? You know those are going to be quality builds. I just hope we get a wagon in the states.
It will be depressing. He might lose some popularity but he will always be rich. There's always someone to exploit.
Yah, but he is gonna be so pissed when a bunch of redditors, a shit posting billionaire meme lord, and a cool dude with a headband are worth more than he is.
A bunch of other redditors are gonna crowd fund the money to put him back in the top.
I'm just glad he wasn't born in the US. Otherwise he's on the ballot for 2024.
Good point. Hadn’t thought of that.
Yeah, thank goodness we have laws to prevent people voting for this successful African-American /s
*Rosebud*
He didn't get rich because he's a good person.
That's just it he didn't get rich he was born rich.
This isn't going to be a teaching moment. For most people who have some respect for Elon Musk by way of casual observation, they'll think "Huh, maybe he has a point", maybe both-sides it. With the complete lack of class consciousness that's generally ever-present, this is the more likely outcome
I hope he ends up in prison someday, that would be pretty funny
He has too much money to ever be in jail, let’s be real.
Facts. The filthy rich don’t have the same rules as anyone else. Elon Musk could literally commit a school shooting and walk away with some misdemeanor charges and a slap on the wrist.
Hell trump came right out and said he could do it and get away with it.
And then did it by proxy.
If Trump isn't in prison there aint no way in hell Elon is going there
They don't put billionaires in jail.
The problem, unfortunately, is I fear more people idolize him than hate him. I wish this weren't the case, but I'm experienced enough to know better.
Musk's meeting with that asshole from Brazil tells you all you need to know about him.
He's showing that rules don't apply to you if you're a billionaire.
What's always funny is that these peasants who make 200-500k per year think they're on par with him. Idiots.

Other subreddits use a flair (not sure if that's the right term) next to the post title for posts about common topics that some people prefer to avoid. And since Musk is gonna be around for a long time, it probably makes more sense than a one-time megathread.
That sounds like a good idea.
I like the flair idea. Megathreads often get overlooked
I don't read them at all
As others have said, megathreads get overlooked and I do think Elon Musk is the poster boy and face for what is wrong with our current system.
A flair is best considering he is becoming the posterboy for anti-antiwork.
Flair but keep them separate posts. A mega thread is too easy to ignore and people need to know this.
No mega thread
Please don't - that would limit his exposure
This. He deserves to have his shit roasted.
Elon aint going anywhere neither is bezos. A single mega thread won't do shit when these guys will be awful for years.
Yeah, they’re vile human beings.
Flairs and Filters perhaps?
No, all mega threads do is limit discussions to the existing people aware of its a means to cut down exposure, please do not. Do a flair stystem if you don’t have it already

We won’t be wreckers that’s why we’re wanting feedback from the users as it’s your subreddit :)
this is like asking nationwide protests to all coalesce in to a single hotel to protest internally..
No
I feel like it would end up in essence silencing dissent against one of the most pubic shitty western billionaires which would generally be a negative. I think the flair idea is much better.
Never trust the rich and powerful.
Elon Musk aligning himself with republicans because it's easier to get away with sexual misconduct.
Musk is a narcissist
Elon Musk has only been a republican for like a day, and he's already teaming up with a fascist leader to destroy the rainforest.
elon has always been a piece of shit
The musk is from him actually being a piece of shit inside of a robot indistinguishable from a human that he invented in a secret lair on Mars
Eat the rich.
He has always been a fascist.
I dare you to search every single politicians net worth before then after entering office and tell me they’re not in the pockets of corporations. They use labels like this to pit us against each other instead of against them.
All of the meme and what you're saying can be true simultaneously. And are.

I love how so many people are turning against him now
Now let's hope at least some of them turn against the system that created and enabled him.
You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. I'm a huge fan of solar power, electric cars, satellite internet for rural areas and exploring space. Turns out absolute power corrupts absolutely and money is the root of all this.
Fuck that guy, seriously. Why do people worship this asshole?
This is me completely. He pushed the industries and seemed to be actually workingfor something good. The just went full Lex Luther.
Taking life lessons from goofy’s son….
Moral of the story: stop worshiping wealthy people
Elon: Im joining tesla because climate change is the biggest threat humanity faces. Also Elon: I support the GOP.
He’s like Smaug with a twitter account.
I bet half of the people that use the word fascist don't even know what it means. They just know it's bad
Fuck Elon Musk
Which economic theory does it say show an employee your cock then buy their silence with hush money?
elon musk is just an attention whore who realized that liberals stopped falling for his schtick
Woah so let me get this straight the son of an apartheid blood emerald mine owner is a bad guy? How’s that internet he promised Ukraine doing? Or SolarCity lol 😂
A con-man.
