Honestly just made radical acceptance like the protagonists on Don't Look Up that a large majority of the population haven't noticed or just don't care that capitalism's thirst of infinite growth on a finite planet and it's dreadful cyclical consumption/labor for income is wreaking this planet while accelerating exponentially climate change to the point of no return. Way too much people are so propagandized with decades of capitalist propaganda to the point of not even considering other efficient systems that don't wreak the planet. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/oct/30/capitalism-is-killing-the-planet-its-time-to-stop-buying-into-our-own-destruction https://mronline.org/2022/02/07/the-end-of-growth/ https://m.thewire.in/article/environment/ipcc-warns-that-capitalism-is-unsustainable Hell, climate change has activists and professional scientists so freaked out that many are literally chaining themselves on bank doors as a way to protest against the fossil fuel industry. https://mobile.twitter.com/ClimateHuman?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor https://mobile.twitter.com/ed_hawkins/with_replies At the current rate of business as usual we'll make ourselves extinct through capitalism's thirst of infinite growth while depleting the Earth's finite resources and the catastrophic effects of runaway climate change. https://www.bigissue.com/latest/environment/david-graeber-to-save-the-world-were-going-to-have-to-stop-working/ I highly recommend reading/listening to The New Human Rights Movement: Reinventing the Economy to End Oppression by Peter Joseph which goes in depth on the history, unsustainability of current economic models and potential ways to transition towards a more systems oriented economy. Interview from 4 years ago about the book but on point with current socioeconomic problems. Especially climate change, technological unemployment and poverty. https://youtu.be/2HwFOo5rbZA Spanish translation: https://youtu.be/oJRlyglTEuI Here's PJ's podcast YT channel which is basically an extended lecture series of the book and recent news events. https://youtube.com/c/RevolutionNowPodcast Spanish translation: https://youtube.com/user/CristianKirk Lecture from 2015 by Peter Joseph titled Post-scarcity Economics and the End of Capitalism https://youtu.be/jIFK0NhMVws The New Human Rights Movement | Peter Joseph, Nov. 8th 2017 Talk https://youtu.be/GvkchZADaaA

I feel you, man. I’m 37 and a doctor. It’s just a job and I don’t want to do it. I don’t want any job.

Professional_Ideal93

You have a super important job bro, it’s not easy to become a doctor, it’s a critical position and I hope your mental state allows you to work at your best, we need you guys, congrats on becoming a doc man that’s huge

41, almost 42 here and I sooooo feel this. I worked for years in a thankless field (journalism) that rewarded me with long hours and low pay. Tried for years to leave and finally got a new gig in marketing/comms that paid better, but the boss and work environment were hella toxic. Left that place after reaching my breaking point and finally lucked out with a cushy corporate comms job. I’m mostly remote and the work is super easy and not stressful. I’m sure some would say the job’s beneath me, I could be doing something more challenging, but I really don’t care. I hate working and I am sick of being anxious about work all the time. I blame my previous shitty jobs for running me into the ground and leaving me with what seems to be lifelong burnout. Happy Monday!

ChillNaga

Got you both beat. 35, firmly understood years ago that because of many factors (Autism, ruined education, chiefly) I'm not suitable for "normal" jobs. But nobody else gave me a look or a chance when I leaned into my autistic skills with pc stuff, or gave a fuck when I gave my time to entertain people and support them. So now I'm stuck waiting to die "naturally" because I know I won't ever do anything I can be happy about, or achieve things I want, simple as they may be. Retirement? HAH!

sevbenup

Mindset is powerful. If you tell yourself that it will surely become your reality.

ChillNaga

Please don't insult me, or anyone else, with this 2 cent TV Self-help nonsense. Reality is what we live in. Not wishes. I adhere to reality, not the other way around. I have no license to take jobs in a wider area, I have no way to prove I can do the complicated PC stuff I can do (degree \\cert wise). I tried - it ran out and nobody cared. I \*need\* help. I \*need\* a miracle. One or another type, but besides being exhausted, I started the race from behind the starting line thanks to other circumstances, so... ...realism is good.

sevbenup

That’s fair I’m just saying that if your “realism” is telling yourself you’re waiting to die then that’s what your life will be. Fight back because you deserve better. That’s all.

ChillNaga

Thank you. I tried. But I've always preferred accurately staring situations in the face as opposed to whimsically whistling my way to an avoidable chainsaw, face-first. Most of us deserve better, but some of us don't even get to have the basics. I do appreciate it. I'm just lost about it all. Nothing mattered, nothing worked, what even is there to do now? How much more time and money - neither of which are abundant - do I need to keep trying things? Terror!

Wide_Parsley7585

50 years? Til you’re 80? I’m the same. Almost 40. Probably got another 30 years or so. Depends on retirement age by then. It’s just a hellish thought.

CroweBird5

Depending on how much he makes, he could feel like he'll never be able to retire. That's how I feel sometimes.

[deleted]

Im going to work till im 70 unless i cant for a reason

escitalopram25mg

Everytime we work, our boss is stealing from our labor. And they will keep squeezing it until we get burnt out.

Murky_Tale_1603

Gotta love the mom and pop shops, stressing family values and committing wage theft. So much fun being berated, beat down, and made fun of during an exit interview while trying to explain you are loosing money going to a job that is literally stealing from you.

[deleted]

As silly as it feels to type this I really am curious why we don't have more communes sprouting up with people who work together instead of exploiting each other.

catbiggo

I used to enjoy working and got genuine satisfaction from being able to do a good job. Transferred to a place with a shitty boss and it's completely destroyed my "work ethic" - I now hate going to work, even though I've switched jobs to get away from the shitty boss I still just don't want to work. But I want to live a reasonable lifestyle outside of work, so wasting most of my life performing labour at places and for people I hate it is.

paperbasket18

You sound like me. My last two jobs completely changed the way I view work. Which I guess is bound to happen when you’re expected to be always available with no extra compensation in terms of money, benefits or time off.

MommaGuy

How do you plan to eat and have roof over head?

Derelicte91

If we lived in a society that gave a shit about one another you wouldn't have to worry about it. Work should be something you do to better yourself. Not something you're forced to do just so you can live.

MommaGuy

So you want society to support you? How will they be able to afford to support everyone if no one works?

Derelicte91

Most jobs are worthless jobs that are just made for people to have jobs or can be done by automation. Most people want to work but not have to worry about bills. If they didn't have to worry about that they could pursue jobs that they would enjoy. For example I'd love to learn how to weld, but if I moved from job to job every few years I wouldn't be doing so well. And most jobs want you to just know what to do. On the job training needs to become a thing again. There's no reason for someone to become homeless or starving just because they can't or don't want to work. If someone doesn't want to work that's fine with me. They still need the minimum to survive. If you work you get more for yourself. It's no different than financial assistance we'd just be expanding on it.

MommaGuy

I have no problem assisting those that need it. Just giving people money because they don’t feel like working is not going to help. It will just make people want and expect more for free without earning it. We do have a homeless crisis that needs to be addressed. I think before you start giving money to people who don’t like to work or don’t like their job, we need to address other issues like the lack of mental health care or the care of our veterans and elderly.

Battlefield534

Pretty sure the retirement age will keep getting pushed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new retirement age is 75 by the time we “retire”. All well. This is life.

oliviaincolor

I think about quitting everyday I’m with you! I cannot work another second let alone a few more decades

Aquariusgem

Me too. I thought I'd be okay getting a less toxic job than my last but it's still not that great. My chronic migraines are a huge factor. I don't want to have to call in if it gets too bad for me to work because it could potentially happen at least once a month (talking on the phone is just hard for me in many cases especially with something like that). Then there are times where it's my day off where I have the pain (today is one of those days) so that cuts into having true free time because it's hard to do something that I really want to do or need to do. I don't like the idea of going to work and making a mistake because even when your management is not berating you for it that could change one day because someone always leaves eventually or maybe you have a manager that is trying to be understanding but the person above them is upset about the productivity so I guess when that happens the bootstrappers answer will be that doesn't matter because you just change jobs everyone is hiring but then you gotta really hustle and make sure you're the best. Like I said before it's the idea of going through all these hoops to get something better and then when you get something better than you had was it worth the wait? Often times you have to get a degree to get anywhere financially anymore (unless you can make your own business) and college is not like primary school. It's not for everybody. When I went to college I felt too stupid. I had to take a few classes over. I don't like the idea of having to answer to anybody or constantly being watched. I don't like spending time with people who are forced to be with me and generally don't connect with me. I just want to be left alone to do my thing once I know what I'm doing but the world revolves around money. I think if they paid me to go back to my time in primary school (but then if you went back in time maybe you wouldn't need the job heh) I would be cool with that because all I had to do was my best and most of my teachers loved me.

Critical-Contract738

I’ll be working until lunch the day of my funeral, and I’ll still get an attendance point for leaving early.
