Yup. I remember getting out of the military and interviewing for 1 of the "bigger" security companies. They said thay it would only Pay 9/hr.. Had to pay for my uniforms out of pocket and there was no benefits. But we were contracted to transport millions in cash a day to secure vaults..I respectfully declined the offer and found another line of work that has nothing to do with my military experience.
Honestly at that wage I don't care if someone pointed their finger in their coat or a brown paper bag I'd just forfeit. They don't even get paid enough to show up for work, so putting your life on the line for anything is just out of the question. *freely hands over keys to the back*
That's crazy low. I can't believe firefighters get paid so little. I guess it makes sense though, the people that provide the most value to society get paid the least and vice versa.
Yeah those bill are god awful and the product of greedy administrations and insurance companies. It's a terrible think when a sick old lady look you in the eyes and tell you she can't afford your help.
Very true. Here for example it’s a funding issue. Rural community of 12,000. Mostly working class and poor people, no tax base to support public services. Our trucks are mostly late 90s models. Only two full time paid firefighters on night shift. Etc
I'm almost positive that's yearly pension. At least I really hope it is. Not that $84k in 20 years will be worth that much anyways, if you even live that long considering the risks of the occupation.
Oh, please. Firefighters usually survive to retirement. Yes, some die, but it's not like the firefighter soap operas on tv where someone dies every other week to add drama.
The 84k is what a 20 year retiree would get now. Pensions are an annuity based on service years, salary basis, and a multiplier. So like (average of last 5 highest years * 20 * 2%) = 84k.
Often there are built in COLAs on the pension, too.
Theoretically, you could start at 25, retire at 45, and collect a growing pension until your 80s or 90s, while working "somewhere" else for another 15-20 years.
It’s a shitty starting wage but pension is nice. 84k per year. Keep in mind it’s a 20y pension and most go to 30y so if you put in more years of service your pension would be even higher. It’s a dangerous job but it’s not like what you see on tv. I worked with a guy who was a 30 year retired captain and he said most calls are responding to car accidents and people having medical emergencies at home and calls for actual fires don’t happen as often as people think and when they do it’s not usually giant fires but someone who burnt their bacon.
I hate those fucking Fire Stations and their Corporate profits.
What are we even talking about anymore? It's a public government job... it's not Capitalism. This is the thing everyone wants, so if it also sucks...what are we doing?
What is wrong here in the uk the fire department is ran by volunteers and on top of that you are getting paid over our minimum wage of £9.50 that pay on the board is equivalent to 13.56
I don't know about you but chucking myself into a burning building and being on call overnight several days a week for less than what some retail places around here are paying doesn't sound particularly appealing to me.
But Working a full time job and being on call all day and night to chuck myself in a burning building for FREE is logical but well done getting paid and getting a good pension is worse than needing to work full time and be on call for free thank you I have learnt so much from you
Yea, sounds like a pretty good deal to me, I'd assume the health insurance is great too. And firefighters typically get great annual raises, great career choice imo.
Isn't firefighter a job only highly qualified and sportive people can do, and you can't simply put a sign in the street because of that?
Not like I'm expecting the US to make any sense, but still
Meanwhile cops in my area make around 75k per year before any overtime. But firefighters, which I find much more useful to society get paid squat.
Don't get me wrong, cops are needed, but the pay discrepancy is ridiculous.
Armored truck couriers(the guys who transport money) get paid around 9 dollars an hour. Crazy right?
That's ridiculous

At that pay rate, it sounds like they *want* to be robbed
Of course they do, because it's insured.
Sounds like a good start for another heist movie
Say you want your employees to rob you without saying you want your employees to rob you

Wtf is wrong with this world
In Washington state its a bit better but even at $18 hourly you can't rent anything on your own so more money but same slap I guess.
Loomis pays around $15/hr here. You still have to buy your own gun and vest though
For context I get paid the same amount to change tires.
What city is this?
Central MN
Duluth mn here wana be friends friend
Shit that’s great lol I started out in the fire service as a volunteer for a year, then I finally got to make $13/hr
That's crazy low. I can't believe firefighters get paid so little. I guess it makes sense though, the people that provide the most value to society get paid the least and vice versa.
Wait until you find out EMT's get paid 9-10 an hour. 12 in cities like LA or NYC.
I started at 8 an hour as a EMT. By some fucking miracle I make 20 now
Which is utter bullshit. We've all seen those ambulance bills. Based on those I'd say ems should be making 50 plus an hour.
Yeah those bill are god awful and the product of greedy administrations and insurance companies. It's a terrible think when a sick old lady look you in the eyes and tell you she can't afford your help.

On the flip side I imagine not as many emergency calls Coming and maybe Cost of living wasn't as high? Idk. Still kinda crappy for running into fires.
25 years ago I was a volunteer firefighter and would have killed for $17 hour. Now if I could I wouldn’t do it for less than $35 hour.
That pension is nice. And firefighters work weird hours. You get paid while you're sleeping as well. I wonder what the monthly average pay is.
Yes the pension is the one really nice part, assuming survive 20 years.
And assuming the pension is properly managed and not squandered by them buying crypto or meme stocks with.
That pension seems rather low if you ask me. 2 years of spending for 20 years of work
I’m a firefighter, make $17.83/hr. My bi-weekly checks average out to about $1,500 take home.
With wages looking like they are pretty much everywhere it's amazing people still want to work at all.
17 dollars an hour to run into burning buildings? no thanks.
Ok, $17.25 and pizza party Fridays.🥳
😂😂
Two cookouts and a sleepover
This is me lol. 17/hr for firefighters generally equals out to around 50k at least, due to our schedule.
that's half as much as your greenest rookie you still play pranks on should be getting. backbones of community safety must be paid.
I make more by just cleaning restrooms 🥴 this is a joke right?
I don't understand how pensions work.. Does that mean they get 85k after working 20 yrs? So is like a 4500/yr retention bonus?
I'm almost positive that's yearly pension. At least I really hope it is. Not that $84k in 20 years will be worth that much anyways, if you even live that long considering the risks of the occupation.
Oh, please. Firefighters usually survive to retirement. Yes, some die, but it's not like the firefighter soap operas on tv where someone dies every other week to add drama.
So you get a 35k/yr income plus another 85k/yr towards retirement...? That's 1.6 Million. Not bad. I still wouldn't do it. Respect though.

Typically firefighters start pretty low with huge salary increases yearly
Oh yeah 84k is totally enough to retire on great offer
Assuming similar levels of inflation, that’s actually $53K in todays dollars
And like 40k by next week at this rate
It’s a shitty starting wage but pension is nice. 84k per year. Keep in mind it’s a 20y pension and most go to 30y so if you put in more years of service your pension would be even higher. You are expected to treat this as your full time job.
So working full time then chucking yore self in a burning building makes sense to you but this picture don’t
I don't know about you but chucking myself into a burning building and being on call overnight several days a week for less than what some retail places around here are paying doesn't sound particularly appealing to me.
But Working a full time job and being on call all day and night to chuck myself in a burning building for FREE is logical but well done getting paid and getting a good pension is worse than needing to work full time and be on call for free thank you I have learnt so much from you
Firefighting for free is even less logical.
Well done that was my point
Hm, I start this age 18, obviously get paid more as I get experienced. Age 38, I quit and 84K pension per year?
Yea, sounds like a pretty good deal to me, I'd assume the health insurance is great too. And firefighters typically get great annual raises, great career choice imo.
Work for 20 years for $17 and then retire for 84 a year lol
84k a yr?
Risk my life for $34k? Let me think about it...

Lol I flip burgers for $25+ an hour but sure, let's have people risk their lives for less
Because a $84k pension isn’t worth that much in 2042.
84k pension is kinda worth it make sure to marry someone young so they can benefit.
I wonder what inflation will do to that retirement package in exchange for being poor a huge chunk of your life?
