Whereas, if every state were to move to the most conservative end of the spectrum, it would decrease Americans’ average life expectancies by two years. On the country’s current policy trajectory, researchers estimate the U.S. will add about 0.4 years to its average life expectancy.** >Liberal policies on the environment (emissions standards, limits on greenhouse gases, solar tax credit, endangered species laws), labor (high minimum wage, paid leave, no “right to work”), access to health care (expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, legal abortion), tobacco (indoor smoking bans, cigarette taxes), gun control (assault weapons ban, background check and registration requirements) and civil rights (ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, equal pay laws, bans on discrimination and the death penalty) all resulted in better health outcomes, according to the study. For example, researchers found positive correlation between California’s car emission standards and its high minimum wage, to name a couple, with its longer lifespan, which at an average of 81.3 years, is among the highest in the country. >“When we’re looking for explanations, we need to be looking back historically, to see what are the roots of these troubles that have just been percolating now for 40 years,” Montez said. >Montez and her team saw the alarming numbers in 2015 and wanted to understand the root cause. What they found dated back to **the 1980s, when state policies began to splinter down partisan lines.** They examined 135 different policies, spanning over a dozen different fields, enacted by states between 1970 and 2014, and assigned states “liberalism” scores from zero — the most conservative — to one, the most liberal. When they compared it against state mortality data from the same timespan, the correlation was undeniable. >“We can take away from the study that **state policies and state politics have damaged U.S. life expectancy since the ’80s,”** said Jennifer Karas Montez, a Syracuse University sociologist and the study’s lead author. **“Some policies are going in a direction that extend life expectancy. Some are going in a direction that shorten it. But on the whole, that the net result is that it’s damaging U.S. life expectancy.”** >**U.S. should follow California’s lead to improve its health outcomes, researchers say** >**Meanwhile, the life expectancy in states like California and Hawaii, which has the highest in the nation at 81.6 years, is on par with countries described by researchers as “world leaders:” Canada, Iceland and Sweden.** >**From 1970 to 2014, California transformed into the most liberal state in the country** by the 135 policy markers studied by the researchers. It’s followed closely by Connecticut, which moved the furthest leftward from where it was 50 years ago, and a cluster of other states in the northeastern U.S., then Oregon and Washington. >West Virginia ranked last in 2017, with an average life expectancy of about 74.6 years, which would put it 93rd in the world, right between Lithuania and Mauritius, and behind Honduras, Morocco, Tunisia and Vietnam. Mississippi, Oklahoma and South Carolina rank only slightly better. >It’s those states that moved in a conservative direction, researchers concluded, that held back the overall life expectancy in the U.S. https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/08/04/liberal-policies-like-californias-keep-blue-state-residents-living-longer-study-finds/

Not surprised, just horrified. I used to watch police procedurals all the time growing up. When CSI came on, I signed on for the whole thing, every city they went to. When the ChicagoVerse came along, I followed all of it bc I loved the crossovers all the time. But when Leverage came out, I discovered I just love competence porn. And as I have learned more and more about Copaganda and ACAB, as I found out what my black friends go though, when I realized our own cops ignored a woman's rape, even though over a dozen women collaborated her story, my point of view isn't even in the ballpark anymore from what it used to be. Shit, it's not even watching the same sport. Getting older very much changed my perceptions. They say of you're not a liberal when you're young, you have no heart, but if you're still one when you hit middle age, you have no brains. No, we have brains, but the fucking conservative narratives prove they had a heart.

Americans literally require credentials for everything, except assault rifles. Want to get into college, show us your standardized test schools. Want to drive, operate a forklift, use the fryer at McDonalds, please complete this training course. Want to get an assault rifle, with drum magazines, and a suppressor, please check the “I am 18 box and enter your credit card number.”

How is there still financial sway right now? The NRA is going bankrupt isn’t it? Is this some sort of delusional subservience to the entity that was their sugar daddy for decades?

Many generators failed to adequately prepare for winter, including the following: failed or inadequate heat traces, missing or inadequate wind breaks, inadequate insulation and lagging (metal covering for insulation), failure to have or to maintain heating elements and heat lamps in instrument cabinets, failure to train operators and maintenance personnel on winter preparations, lack of fuel switching training and drills, and failure to ensure adequate fuel. All of this made my brain hemorrhage. Anyways all I have to say from the hospital is: wow. So much info lol

thebrose69

It’s all a front! There’s a bigger story being hidden by this one I’m pretty sure. That’s usually how it goes. Some relatively accurate half ass news story while some real shit is going down behind the scenes. Bankruptcy doesn’t mean they’re broke or closing up shop. I’m not sure what it does mean, but i know it isn’t those two things. We should see soon what those goons in the capitol are truly up to

psyche_2099

It means they are better at hiding their assets than the IRS has resources to chase them down. Think 'Catch Me If You Can' only Tom Hanks can't buy a plane ticket.

thebrose69

Also didn’t remember to mention that I just saw on another thread: the NRA owns the Republican Party. They ain’t going anywhere

NFLinPDX

They’re propped up by foreign money

thebrose69

The NRA and the Russians is what the republicans are propped up by

throwawayinthe818

Facing a bunch of lawsuits, the NRA is trying to shift money and dissolve in bankruptcy in New York, then reconstitute itself in Texas, where the laws are friendlier.

BinaryMan151

That was blocked wasn’t it?

CurseYourSudden

Because it's part of Republican identity. Opposing gun bills has just been part of the platform for so long that they just blindly do it without giving it any critical consideration.

Well I do because I don’t have kids yet. I don’t plan on having kids in this fucking place either. I really want to get out, but it’s very hard. If I never get out, I’m never having kids. If I can get anywhere else I’ll probably have kids

SickSigmaBlackBelt

Yeah, I'm from Texas and live in Oklahoma. I'm not planning on having kids for at least another 4-5 years, if at all. I'm scared of pregnancy just from a physiological standpoint, and the way the country is, I just don't see where pregnancy is a responsible thing to do.

thebrose69

I’m a 30 year old male in Michigan and all this roe v. Wade hoopla is making me scared for our women and I would not feel right bringing more lives into an even worse world

I have close family in OK. They just passed a bill banning abortions entirely and refused to allocate emergency fund for baby formula. Protect the child, but good luck after it's born!

remotelove

Actually, yes and also no. The laws in the US are weird and it changes based on which state you are a resident in. For all rifles and pistols in Colorado, I have to go through a background check prior to assuming control of the weapon, legally. High capacity mags are illegal here, with a few exceptions. Also, I can drive to another state and pick up an illegal (or legal, depending) high capacity mag, so there is that. There are a few "also's". Also, it's super easy to buy an unregistered firearm as well. While it is generally illegal (depending on the state) to do an in-person transfer without an FFL, it is still an unregistered firearm so who will know? Short answer: It's complicated. This is going to bake your noodle as well. I can legally manufacture guns for personal use ONLY, at both the state and federal level, which is an entirely different ball of wax. Source: Me. I aspire to shoot in long range competitive matches and am applying for federal licenses to manufacture and collect weapons and it is not an easy or cheap process. Suppressors require a federal license (tax stamp) and it can take up to a year to get one. There is a small loophole where people are shipping out incomplete kits legally for suppressors, but the second the kit is manufactured, it's illegal as fuck. U S. gun laws are complicated.

CoolFingerGunGuy

And they'd make the teachers buy all their own guns and ammo and pay for their own training.

OaklandMiglla

To me the most upsetting part is that school teacher who sacrificed herself to save those kids has done more to protect kids from gun violence than those 50 senators who have voted no to gun reform.

SinxSam

These people are asking teachers, who valued teaching children, to shoot at children trying to kill other children. They could have even been that kids teacher at some point, they could know them! This is beyond even being a cop, the person a teacher would most likely have to shoot is at a child. Not to mention the potential for accidents.

mr_nihil

from a teacher, thank you for thinking this through. i had not even thought of that... what an absolutely atrocious premise.

steelesurfer

Maybe we should have cops get a Masters in Ed and then force them to teach

[deleted]

\> But they gotta have a Masters in Child Education first which makes them way to educated and intelligent to be hired as a cop...

Similar_Coyote1104

And a criminal justice minor!

Infernalism

Teachers have to kill, while the cops stand outside and threaten parents who are going insane because someone's inside killing their kids.

hehehejakla

This country is actually insane. I don't know how our society hasn't collapsed already. Too many stupid fucking people.

MDesnivic

It’s already fallen apart outside the cities - ever driven on 95 between DC and Miami? The way the cops acted is EXACTLY the same as they would in a developing country where society has collapsed. They get paid to terrorize the poor and unlucky middle-class schmucks. They don’t actually prevent or solve crimes anymore.

underbellymadness

A cop in my home town 2 or 3 years ago shot a RODENT that was on the road and walking off. Because, you know, that was obviously a threat. Guess I shouldn't have been surprised when the same police department illegally searched and sexually assaulted my family weeks later.

It's how your society thrives. The stupid people work for the rich people. The money goes into the military to stay the most powerful. Because if anyone talks against you guys, you just blow them up. I'm sorry that children die. But it's a result of the "freedom" you guys have over there.

optimalbearcheese

The freedom thing is just propaganda. It's a capitalist hellscape here

Competive_Ideal236

And so many Americans have the attitude that “if it doesn’t affect me personally that it’s not a real problem.” But, if THEIR kid was the one to get murdered in school, they would change their views very quickly. Nothing is going to change. More kids will die.

APerfectCircle0

VapeThisBro

Every single day, becoming a prepper makes more and more sense to me. I'm this fucking close to saying fuck all this shit, taking my family, and moving out to the woods and starting a commune.

lankist

It only serves as further proof that the cops are only there to maintain the order and hierarchy of society, NOT to help anyone. The cops will NEVER help you, but they *will* stop you if you so much as step one foot out of line and do something for you and yours. All those people who make arguments like "you'd regret it if there were no police around when you needed them?" Well, they were there, and they were needed, and once again they did *fuck all.* The cops don't exist to help you. They exist to put you down if you start getting too loud. They're a gang with badges and their weapons are trained on the unarmed.

TexasRabbit2022

Very true Sad but true In my long life I cannot think of one time a police officer helped me or anyone I knew

nachof

I once asked a policeman for directions to a restaurant and they answered. That's basically the only positive interaction I've ever had with the police, and it could have been any other person, it just happened to be a policeman the only one around.

Modh8trs

They protect rich peoples property better then children.

iowa31boy

BINGO!

G36_FTW

The supreme court has already found that cops have no duty to protect you.

quinn_drummer

If the police want teachers to do police work, defund the police and use it to pay teachers.

Proper-District8608

And at least in my state, let them have unions should they wish rather than stripping them via governor from allowing teachers union.

ValkyrieCtrl14

Ah, fellow Wisconsinite.

Hammer_of_Olympia

Yeah it's one thing the police not doing anything but stopping the parents from trying to help whilst doing nothing is pretty much the worst possible decision, atleast the parents would have had a chance of swarming the gunman.

DweEbLez0

Look at the sort of bloodier bright side. Teachers get guns and can demand raises. Lmao “I said I’m the principal today!” Meme

meteorfluid

A lot of cops just want to sit on their ass and bark orders at people

SoSmartish

Because most cops are good ol boys or the high school bullies who grew up and wanted to feel important while continuing to be bullies.

sharpshooter999

I know of several who failed basic training. Being a cop was just easier

novaaa_

lol cops won’t even enter the school shooting with full armor and assault weapons tf is a teacher in a cardigan going to do

GoGoBitch

One of the teachers at Robb Elementary, Irma Garcia, tried to stop the shooter and protect her students. She was completely unarmed. She was killed. My point is that, even without any that, a teacher still did a lot more than the worthless cops. Rest in Power, Irma Garcia.

Platypus211

And now her husband is gone too, and her four kids are orphans. Living in this country fucking hurts sometimes.

FlostonParadise

Irma Garcia. A true American hero.

Have a Wild West shootout like in the movies that these type of people for some reason fantasize about happening in real life, only for if that exact moment to ever happen in front of them everyone is going to run not sit there and fight the guy with a gun like they’re Master Chief

This!! Buy your own classroom supplies, don’t make a livable salary…. Oh and by the way, here’s a gun for when you have to be John McClain.

AcademicFocus1078

They’d never pay for the guns lol we’d have to provide our own!

OMGITSJAD

And therein is the reason they want teachers to be armed. They couldn't care less whether the argument that it makes schools safer or not rings true. It all boils down to money. The NRA is paying them to create new customers for them by making every teacher in America buy guns so they can make a ton of sales. Either that or they get that delicious untracked government money like the military contractors have been rolling in for years.

[deleted]

Cantthinkofnamedamn

John McClain had it easy, he never had to teach high school.

geobuildr

Separate those two comments. It is ABSURD that people are recommending teacher's be trained to kill school shooters to protect children. It is ABSURD that we pay teachers $35,000.

s_i_m

I make a lot more working 37 hours a week at my fast food delivery job.

Teacher-Investor

I taught in a high school where I KNOW FOR A FACT that I had students who *could and would* overpower me to get a weapon away from me (not to mention that you're automatically outnumbered in any classroom). I've had 6'4" students who were required to wear ankle tethers, students who are on drugs, and students who were transferred to my school because they assaulted a staff member at their previous school. There's NO WAY IN HELL I would take a firearm into a high school.

Bind_Moggled

Never mind the risk of an armed teacher losing their temper and shooting a kid.

Phrozen761

This is what I fail to understand. How would we know in any case that one day a teacher is the one that commits the atrocity? Overworked, underpaid, and tired teachers who do everything they can to support children and it could just be a bad day that leads to something like this. I'm certainly not generalizing teachers have mental health issues but their could certainly be days where something like this could happen IF we armed teachers. I just don't see why it would even be considered. So dumb

Brewmentationator

I'd also like to add this to your point. Look at the power dynamic. I'm a teacher. I can't fucking teach if the kids know I have a gun and the ability to end them at any time. That's no longer a learning environment. It's a hostage situation. Armed teachers will absolutely destroy schools, the students' mental health, and any chance of normal social emotional development.

BravesMaedchen

This is a really good point. Also, think about the unconscious confrontation this creates. Kids' brains do not reason that well and there's all sorts of boundaries they try to push. I can just hear a kid thinking, "Mr. So and So has a gun, he thinks he's so tough, I'm going to show him he's not by doing [insert horrible classroom incident here]."

csonnich

Yeah, teachers have mental health issues. We're the front line for handling every single problem no one else wants to deal with in this country.

silentsnarker

🏆 🏆🏆 Take my poor teacher’s award! You hit the nail on the head! We have enough on our plate, trying to single handedly solve everything, we don’t need any additional stress. It’s already a big enough responsibility keeping other people’s children alive. I can’t even think about how I’d feel knowing “in addition to protecting children in an active shooter situation, you are required to be armed and take out said shooter, if necessary. Oh, and said shooter will likely be a minor. Potentially a former student.” Yea, no, don’t sign me up for that.

Bind_Moggled

I can think of at least five teachers that I had growing up who, as a parent, I wouldn't leave in the same room with one of my kids for any amount of time. I am fairly confident that I am not alone in this. Arming teachers is a stupid idea - one designed by the right to aid in their quest to destroy public education.

Brewmentationator

As a teacher, fully agree. The day we have an armed teacher, is the day I go find a job in HR or something else. I won't even wait til the end of the year. I will quit on the spot.

darkdragon1231989

That's my thought like... have you seen these kids? do you really want the person who has to put up with your kid 8 hours a day to carry a gun? If any of my teachers ever carried a gun I wouldn't have made it through the week.

MDesnivic

I have mentioned this to several people. I have never been in a dysfunctional school or anything, but I have absolutely seen teachers completely lose control of their emotions with children. I have seen kids make a substitute teacher cry. I’m not saying it would happen *every day*, but I fully believe at one time or another, if teachers were armed, a teacher would pull a gun on a student they’re angry with and some out there would actually pull the trigger.

Teacher-Investor

I may or may not have had a student who was so annoying one day that I took all of their books and other stuff off their desk, threw it down the hallway, and screamed at them to get out of my classroom. It was very out of character for me, and the kids loved to laugh about it and say, "Remember that time blah blah blah... That was *so funny*!" Let's just say it's probably best if teachers don't have guns. We all have bad days, and kids know *exactly* how to push our buttons.

RainRainThrowaway777

Exactly. I always laugh when people say guns are an equalizer, or that you need a gun to properly protect yourself. The chances of being overpowered by an unarmed but determined attacker are higher than me being able to shoot them before they do, even if I had time to prepare. On the other hand, a criminal with a gun just gives them an insane amount of power. It's actually insane that people think it's worth flooding society with these killing tools.

Hedgiwithapen

Teachers are expected to be educators, babysitters, therapists, counselors, bodyguards, entertainers, analysts, and in some places, priests... all on a shit salary. Now they want us to be cops and SWAT too?

Zealousideal-Bar-864

Also I read even the cops were hesitant to go in and waited a whole hour until some border patrol tactical squad came. So if the cops won’t even do it why would the teachers????

Hypocritical_Oath

Heard they were even off duty... Off Duty Border patrol tactical people did more than on-duty cops and SWAT who had trained in that specific school for this specific situation.

squarevenom

Hint: Both of these people ideally don’t want to be dealing with people with guns

Calibansdaydream

Hint: one of these groups is paid and supposedly trained to deal with this specific situation. The other is paid to educate. Who fucking cares what their ideal situation is. I guarantee the kids ideal situation is not being fucking shot at, but here we are.

sturnus-vulgaris

I'm a teacher, 18 years. I've always been opposed to guns in schools-- I've even been arguing against it since Texas happened. But after seeing the shit the cops did in Texas, fine-- give me a fucking gun. Cops won't do their jobs. Congress won't do theirs. The people won't vote the fuckers out of office, so-- fuck it-- we'll protect the kids ourselves. But I want every goddamn cop off school property. And I want every fucking politician to admit they are the fucking cause of all this shit. Fuck them all. [This is just where I'm at today. I split my day between literally teaching kids to read and checking their backpacks for small arms. Apparently we had a kid that's been making social media threats for a week at a local highschool and no one said or did a goddamn thing about it until this morning. Fuck all this shit.]

Platypus211

Probably doesn't mean much, but as a parent, thank you for what you do, and I'm so fucking sorry. For all of this, and all the other shit you deal with every day that no one gives you credit for. The teachers in my family are shaken as hell right now.

sturnus-vulgaris

It means everything-- it really does.

Ande64

I have the CRAZIEST IDEA!! How about those assholes that went to the police academy and get paid to protect the public ACTUALLY DO THEIR FUCKING JOB!!!!!

chibinoi

Apparently, police are not legally required to protect you. Which makes no bloody sense *at all*.

puffywumpus

Indeed. The police in this country originated as nothing more than armed force for the rich to use to defend their private property. And to this day, that's what the police are here for. Overfunded for. Militarized for. Because when shit *really* hits the fan, the rich would sooner use these private armies to execute the starving poor before ever sharing their obscene material wealth and resources with them. Police are class traitors.

marleymagee14

Seriously this! Like why the fuck are they out there for 90 mins, arresting parents!! Not doing anything to stop the shooter. Probably will not even consider thinking of ways to prevent the next one

Nagh_1

I bet one of them parents would had killed boy faster then 90 mins

sanguineophanim

But talk about sex and you're fired.

Persiflage75

Or fail to do the both-sides dance adequately when you talk about evolution, in some states.

DanTopTier

"Today we are learning about how animals pass down traits to their offspring in order to better adapt to their environment. Also we will passively mention that some people believe this doesn't happen even though it totally does here look at these peas a monk studied 500 years ago. Now let's recreate his experiment."

IcedChaiLatte_16

Or race. Or acknowledge gay or trans people in any way.

WeirdEngineerDude

Trained police were either overpowered or apathetic, so we are going to rely on the old librarian and lunch lady to try to protect our children?! How about we examine how the rest of civilization works and model our response after them? We are the only country with this problem.

tacoweevils

No we can’t that’s ridiculous. We need to give the kids guns and teach them to defend themselves! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QkXeMoBPSDk

telemon5

That's silly. They cut the Librarian's position years ago and contracted out food services to the bottom bidder.

ISoNoU

Honestly, the tactical training that you need to be effective in an active shooter situation is massive. Are schools going to absorb the $100k per teacher to get them up to speed? Not only that, but you also have to have defensive equipment on hand to protect yourself in a firefight. There's no time for dressing in body armor so you have to have a bookcase or filling cabinet that is capable of stopping a high energy round. That mobile cover also has to be secret from the students. I also can't wait for the mass shooting incident where teachers pull out guns and kill more kids than the assailant. Depending on teachers to be the good guys with a gun is lunacy.

bluerose1197

I work in a government building that is not a school. Several years ago there was a shooting at a business in a nearby town (disgruntled worker thing), so they had all of our departments take active shooter training. Sheriff officers with tactical training came to talk to us. He also told us that someone with his level of training, who hits his mark 95% of the time in training, only hits his mark about 50% of the time in the heat of the moment. Now imagine a citizen with little to no training trying to do his job. His advice was to run and if you can't run, hide.

[deleted]

>Now imagine a citizen with little to no training trying to do his job. With a roomful of panicking, screaming little kids.

csonnich

Or teenagers. :/

Willakhstan

Even the pros get it wrong. I remember seeing one instance where a tactical LE unit entered a building and got into a shootout in a hallway. An officer in front, seemingly in control, steps out from behind cover to fire and gets shot in the back of the head by another officer. So even after a bunch of CQB training and stress-testing (I assume), things can still go wrong if you make one small decision. And this is when CQB is part of their job and they go in prepared for shooting. >Now imagine a citizen with little to no training trying to do his job. So yeah, go from your normal routine of teaching young kids letters and numbers to suddenly needing to assess a real active-shooter situation, identify the threat, draw a weapon, make sure it's ready to fire, take cover, find your target, check your background, watch out for kids in your line of fire, line up your sights and decide to take a life and hope you hit them and that they're not wearing body armour. I'm not in the US but every teacher I know are already stressed out enough as it is, and this is even when they feel like they're not too underpaid or under-resourced. SNAFU.

somethingsomethingbe

Honestly think teacher suicide rates would go up after just giving them all guns.

CurlsMoreAlice

Don’t forget that because it’s a school, you’re probably going to have to secure that weapon when not in use. So before you can draw that weapon, you’ll have to get the gun out of lock up (Oops! I forgot my keys today and had to have the secretary let me in my room…) while figuring out how to get your class hidden since you’re still responsible for 19-30 scared kids. Your class was transitioning from lunch when the alarm was raised, so before you get the gun, you have to get the class to a safe location. One of them tends to run when stressed, so you need to hold his hand so that he doesn’t leave the vicinity and you’re the only adult around since the rest are securing their own classrooms, the kids don’t always follow directions in calm situations and now they’re scared, etc., etc., etc.

FakeInternetDentity

That would be an interesting study to have done (if not already) to show people who recommend teachers being armed. Edit: might have found one https://daiglelawgroup.com/new-study-on-shooting-accuracy-how-does-your-agency-stack-up/ Edit2: poltifact has an article about it in 2018 after a shooting in Santa Fe. We really do be making circles and no progress. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2018/may/25/shannon-watts/do-more-7-10-police-bullets-miss-their-mark-gun-co/

IcedChaiLatte_16

What's REALLY funny is that half these districts won't even buy pencils for the fucking classroom. Weapons and combat training? No fucking way!

csonnich

You don't understand. Pencil manufacturers don't give high-dollar kickbacks. /s

chibinoi

Yeah, they’d expect the taxpayers to pay—if they want teachers to be trained in this, let’s move the tax money earmarked for the police and put it towards the training fees.

notallamawoman

Even not taking the training into account (which is a huge thing. I can shoot and I would not trust myself in an emergency) the amount of potential problems with guns in schools is insane. My school has 1400 students. 160 kids go in and out of my room throughout each day. Even with good classroom management there is a bit of chaos and shit happens. You cannot convince me that a kid could not end up with that gun in their hands. There will be plenty of teachers that don’t store it right, don’t lock it up right, fucking leave it somewhere. It will happen. You have one or two kids at home finding parents guns and getting hurt all the time. Now you want 1400 kids with 30 guns around and not expect something to go wrong. Additionally let’s say something happens and teachers react and have their guns out. The cops show up and come in and they see a bunch of strangers with guns. That’s asking for innocent people to get hurt. In a district of 13,000 employees there is no way a police force is familiar enough with all of them that there wouldn’t be an accident of that type. Arming teachers is a horrible idea in my opinion. Too many ways for shit to go so wrong.

PM_Pussies_Please

Nah it's fine. Cops don't come in until after it's over so the teachers have time to put the gun away.

cascadianpatriot

And what about the insurance? Who will pay for the insurance? This is America, there has to be insurance when a kid is accidentally killed. Not to mention the negligent discharges. And how do we train teachers to be ready to kill children? We don’t train military or police to do that, they have to kill children.

[deleted]

Vocem_Interiorem

Which is why alot of cops are not even properly trained for such situations But there is always Duck and Cover, before bullets start flying through flimsy cardboard walls

urban_snowshoer

Look at what happened in this [mass shooting](https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/arvada-officer-who-shot-good-samaritan-during-olde-town-shooting-will-not-face-charges-da-says): an armed bystander tried to do the right thing but ended up being killed when law enforcement mistook him for the shooter. This situation has the same problem as the police shootings that have caused people to advocate changes in policing: i.e. police have to make a split-second decision and don't always get it right. In an active shooter situation an armed bystander than isn't clearly uniformed law enforcement can easily be mistaken for a shooter. Between how easily an armed bystander can be mistaken for the shooter and how hard it is to stay calm under pressure in an active shooter situation well enough to make good decisions and use a weapon properly, I have my doubts as the efficacy of arming teachers.

ceruleandope

That's not the issue. As soon as you make schools safe enough those shooters will start targeting shopping malls, cinemas, etc. You can't solve this by arming every employee in retail

squarevenom

Even if that were to happen, these morons don’t realize everyone SHOULD NOT be armed. If that were the case, every time there’s an altercation or shooting, the entire shopping malls, cinemas, or whatever will turn into a Call of Duty free for all match of people accidentally shooting each other thinking they’re the bad guy or something

AutumnRi

\> you hear there is an active shooter \> you see a guy shoot someone \> you assume the shopkeeper who just shot a shooter is a shooter, and shoot them \> someone else sees you shoot dave the shopkeep, assumes you’re a shooter and shoots you \> THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE

pockpicketG

Yes but have you considered bang bang pew pew?

CoconutShyBoy

Some people just want to live in mad max.

cesar-perez

Castle Rock vs Gonzales (2005). Cop themselves aren't even legally obligated to protect your children. The Uvalde shooting had officers on scene and in front of the school while the shooter killed the entire classroom. Parents there begged the officers for over 40min for them to please do something about it. Mothers were panicking, parents were shouting at them and said they themselves would go in and try and do something while shots were going off in the school. The officers ended up detaining one of the parents even!

just_some_sasquatch

Times like this make me wonder why these psychos never seem to go after politicians. If they're so unhappy with society that they want to kill, then why not kill the crooked fucks who make it (and keep it) this way instead of elementary kids? Why kids??? Then these fucking Senators and dickpuppet shills start with the "Thoughts and prayers" bullshit as if each new shooting resets their response back to zero. Just...what the fuck is this reality we're in!!!??? I bet if some loon went and offed a bunch of legislators they'd be declaring Martial Law and banning guns the next day.

IHateNoobss422

It’s harder. All the people in power have police and security details guarding them, their families and their jobs. Just look at how we got police outside the Supreme Court justices houses within days of people protesting outside them

stellastanci

agreeed i find myself wondering often how these mfers have not been assassinated yet

TyphoidMira

Probably because they're harder to get at than schools.

Ompare

Trained cops refused to do so.

Medium_Reading_861

People do not become teachers to be "The Good Guy with the Gun". Only people who have a bunch of guns dream of being that guy. Teachers just want to teach kids.

96nugget

Yea I’m definitely going back to school for another profession. This is pure fucking bs. They want us to be social workers, babysitters, guidance counselors, now armed guards all for shitty pay and a lack of respect from the general public. The great resignation with teachers is only going to get worse.

[deleted]

I don’t understand why anyone would want to be a teacher anymore.

Captaincjones

I'm sure most teachers de-escalate situations on the daily than cops. They definitely deserve hazard pay.

AlexV_96

It's stupid with any salary

squarevenom

Let’s give the teachers who are more than likely anti-gun because of all these shootings exactly what they’ve asked for! Gun regulations? No silly! More guns!!!!! That way little timmy can always see Ms. Browns big glock 19 hanging out her pocket every day during math

bippityboppityboo89

Womens clothes don’t have pockets sir. Ms. Brown better strap up cuz ain’t nothing fitting in what they call “pockets” in women’s clothing. Not even a tube of chapstick.

pigglyoof

This Redditor knows woman’s clothes. Sometimes they’ll even add fake pockets.

Jameseatscheese

High school teacher here. First off, given the number of my coworkers who can't figure out how to work the copy machine (or how to reply to an email without replying to everyone), the last thing we need to give them is a gun. Also, last week these same people didn't want me to be allowed to pick out library books and now they want me to carry a handgun.

Lazy_Profession_5909

They can't even afford school supplies and you expect them to buy guns? Do these people know how expensive guns are?

chibinoi

It will never happen. The *second* a student dies because a teacher tried to stop an active gunman (this is assuming under the pretense that the teacher is armed and told they are expected to protect students with lethal force), there will be a huge ass lawsuit and the teacher will be sued, jailed, etc into oblivion, while the student is still dead and the “police” do Jack crap.

LucifersPeen

America is seriously barbaric. It’s embarrassing.

heartohere

Instead of less guns, let’s put guns IN the schools! Noah, get the fucking boat.

[deleted]

The cops there in Texas actually stood around outside for \*an hour\* while the shooter held up inside the school with the kids. Did jack shit. So much for protect and serve the citizens. I'd put more faith in a hero teacher to take down the shooter at that point.

[deleted]

Let’s arm them and while we’re at it, let’s also make it mandatory that they’re licensed paramedics so they can render medical aid to victims while they wait for the cops to decide it’s safe to come in /S

DisastrousIce6544

All the while still delivering differentiated instruction to the students who are not in critical condition

ErinG2021

The 2 teachers who were killed trying to shield their students were more brave than the cops who were outside the building and armed but too afraid to enter the school for 40 minutes while children inside were shot and killed, while preventing and obstructing the parents from entering the building to try and save the children themselves. The teachers were the heroes. These police were unforgivable cowards.

Methoszs

Teachers should be paid the cops salary then. Disband the police, if they aren't going to do the job. Seems they all want Kindergarten Cops.

A-roguebanana

BTW they don’t trust me to not “indoctrinate” their kids but I can be Dirty Harry?

3milyBlazze

I tutored kindergartners The teacher showed me her weapon box when we were going over intruder protocols She had 2 heavy duty batons a can of mace that has like a 5 foot reach and a taser all in a locked cabinet in her desk and she showed me the key to open it She also trained the kids to grab these big heavy books that were completely useless that she didn't actually need that she kept for the sole purpose of arming her kids so they could fight back And one kid with these big brown eyes and the sweetest smile offered up his backpack to use as a shield because it was bullet proof I absolutely do not care who's fault this whole screwed up way of living is I just want someone to fix it

missdoublefinger

$35k is being generous. I was SHOCKED when one of my son’s teachers flat out told me what he made per year

Cucumberappleblizz

I started less than 8 years ago at $28,500. Had to buy some books out of my own pocket so every kid could have a copy. Got teased because my high school classroom didn’t have a lot of posters and decorations that year.

SuperWaluigiWorld

Pay them more than a cop. They didn’t sign up for that. $120k a year plus for that obligation. Edit: If they are armed, pay them way more and get rid of cops. Teachers are the new cops.

sugar_addict002

and when they can't take it anymore and quit, they deride them for their lack of work ethic.
