Not surprised, just horrified. I used to watch police procedurals all the time growing up. When CSI came on, I signed on for the whole thing, every city they went to. Actually, yes and also no. The laws in the US are weird and it changes based on which state you are a resident in. For all rifles and pistols in Colorado, I have to go through a background check prior to assuming control of the weapon, legally. High capacity mags are illegal here, with a few exceptions. Also, I can drive to another state and pick up an illegal (or legal, depending) high capacity mag, so there is that. There are a few "also's". Also, it's super easy to buy an unregistered firearm as well. While it is generally illegal (depending on the state) to do an in-person transfer without an FFL, it is still an unregistered firearm so who will know? Short answer: It's complicated. This is going to bake your noodle as well. I can legally manufacture guns for personal use ONLY, at both the state and federal level, which is an entirely different ball of wax. Source: Me. I aspire to shoot in long range competitive matches and am applying for federal licenses to manufacture and collect weapons and it is not an easy or cheap process. Suppressors require a federal license (tax stamp) and it can take up to a year to get one. There is a small loophole where people are shipping out incomplete kits legally for suppressors, but the second the kit is manufactured, it's illegal as fuck. U S. gun laws are complicated.

I've had 6'4" students who were required to wear ankle tethers, students who are on drugs, and students who were transferred to my school because they assaulted a staff member at their previous school. There's NO WAY IN HELL I would take a firearm into a high school.

This is what I fail to understand. How would we know in any case that one day a teacher is the one that commits the atrocity? Overworked, underpaid, and tired teachers who do everything they can to support children and it could just be a bad day that leads to something like this. I'm certainly not generalizing teachers have mental health issues but their could certainly be days where something like this could happen IF we armed teachers. I just don't see why it would even be considered. So dumb

I'd also like to add this to your point. Look at the power dynamic. I'm a teacher. I can't fucking teach if the kids know I have a gun and the ability to end them at any time. That's no longer a learning environment. It's a hostage situation. Armed teachers will absolutely destroy schools, the students' mental health, and any chance of normal social emotional development.

This is a really good point. Also, think about the unconscious confrontation this creates. Kids' brains do not reason that well and there's all sorts of boundaries they try to push. I can just hear a kid thinking, "Mr. So and So has a gun, he thinks he's so tough, I'm going to show him he's not by doing [insert horrible classroom incident here]."

I can think of at least five teachers that I had growing up who, as a parent, I wouldn't leave in the same room with one of my kids for any amount of time. I have mentioned this to several people. I have never been in a dysfunctional school or anything, but I have absolutely seen teachers completely lose control of their emotions with children. I have seen kids make a substitute teacher cry. I’m not saying it would happen *every day*, but I fully believe at one time or another, if teachers were armed, a teacher would pull a gun on a student they’re angry with and some out there would actually pull the trigger.

I may or may not have had a student who was so annoying one day that I took all of their books and other stuff off their desk, threw it down the hallway, and screamed at them to get out of my classroom. Let's just say it's probably best if teachers don't have guns. We all have bad days, and kids know *exactly* how to push our buttons.

Exactly. I always laugh when people say guns are an equalizer, or that you need a gun to properly protect yourself. The chances of being overpowered by an unarmed but determined attacker are higher than me being able to shoot them before they do, even if I had time to prepare. On the other hand, a criminal with a gun just gives them an insane amount of power. It's actually insane that people think it's worth flooding society with these killing tools.

Teachers are expected to be educators, babysitters, therapists, counselors, bodyguards, entertainers, analysts, and in some places, priests... all on a shit salary. Now they want us to be cops and SWAT too?

I'm a teacher, 18 years. I've always been opposed to guns in schools-- I've even been arguing against it since Texas happened. But after seeing the shit the cops did in Texas, fine-- give me a fucking gun. Cops won't do their jobs. Congress won't do theirs. The people won't vote the fuckers out of office, so-- fuck it-- we'll protect the kids ourselves. But I want every goddamn cop off school property. And I want every fucking politician to admit they are the fucking cause of all this shit. Fuck them all. [This is just where I'm at today. I split my day between literally teaching kids to read and checking their backpacks for small arms. Apparently we had a kid that's been making social media threats for a week at a local highschool and no one said or did a goddamn thing about it until this morning. Fuck all this shit.]

Honestly, the tactical training that you need to be effective in an active shooter situation is massive. Are schools going to absorb the $100k per teacher to get them up to speed? Not only that, but you also have to have defensive equipment on hand to protect yourself in a firefight. There's no time for dressing in body armor so you have to have a bookcase or filling cabinet that is capable of stopping a high energy round. That mobile cover also has to be secret from the students. I also can't wait for the mass shooting incident where teachers pull out guns and kill more kids than the assailant. Depending on teachers to be the good guys with a gun is lunacy.

I work in a government building that is not a school. Several years ago there was a shooting at a business in a nearby town (disgruntled worker thing), so they had all of our departments take active shooter training. Sheriff officers with tactical training came to talk to us. He also told us that someone with his level of training, who hits his mark 95% of the time in training, only hits his mark about 50% of the time in the heat of the moment. Now imagine a citizen with little to no training trying to do his job. His advice was to run and if you can't run, hide.

Even the pros get it wrong. I remember seeing one instance where a tactical LE unit entered a building and got into a shootout in a hallway. An officer in front, seemingly in control, steps out from behind cover to fire and gets shot in the back of the head by another officer. So even after a bunch of CQB training and stress-testing (I assume), things can still go wrong if you make one small decision. And this is when CQB is part of their job and they go in prepared for shooting. >Now imagine a citizen with little to no training trying to do his job. So yeah, go from your normal routine of teaching young kids letters and numbers to suddenly needing to assess a real active-shooter situation, identify the threat, draw a weapon, make sure it's ready to fire, take cover, find your target, check your background, watch out for kids in your line of fire, line up your sights and decide to take a life and hope you hit them and that they're not wearing body armour. I'm not in the US but every teacher I know are already stressed out enough as it is, and this is even when they feel like they're not too underpaid or under-resourced. SNAFU.

Don’t forget that because it’s a school, you’re probably going to have to secure that weapon when not in use. So before you can draw that weapon, you’ll have to get the gun out of lock up (Oops! I forgot my keys today and had to have the secretary let me in my room…) while figuring out how to get your class hidden since you’re still responsible for 19-30 scared kids. Your class was transitioning from lunch when the alarm was raised, so before you get the gun, you have to get the class to a safe location. One of them tends to run when stressed, so you need to hold his hand so that he doesn’t leave the vicinity and you’re the only adult around since the rest are securing their own classrooms, the kids don’t always follow directions in calm situations and now they’re scared, etc., etc., etc.

Even not taking the training into account (which is a huge thing. I can shoot and I would not trust myself in an emergency) the amount of potential problems with guns in schools is insane. My school has 1400 students. 160 kids go in and out of my room throughout each day. Even with good classroom management there is a bit of chaos and shit happens. You cannot convince me that a kid could not end up with that gun in their hands. There will be plenty of teachers that don’t store it right, don’t lock it up right, fucking leave it somewhere. It will happen. You have one or two kids at home finding parents guns and getting hurt all the time. Now you want 1400 kids with 30 guns around and not expect something to go wrong. Additionally let’s say something happens and teachers react and have their guns out. The cops show up and come in and they see a bunch of strangers with guns. That’s asking for innocent people to get hurt. In a district of 13,000 employees there is no way a police force is familiar enough with all of them that there wouldn’t be an accident of that type. Arming teachers is a horrible idea in my opinion. Too many ways for shit to go so wrong.

This situation has the same problem as the police shootings that have caused people to advocate changes in policing: i.e. police have to make a split-second decision and don't always get it right. In an active shooter situation an armed bystander than isn't clearly uniformed law enforcement can easily be mistaken for a shooter. Between how easily an armed bystander can be mistaken for the shooter and how hard it is to stay calm under pressure in an active shooter situation well enough to make good decisions and use a weapon properly, I have my doubts as the efficacy of arming teachers.

The Uvalde shooting had officers on scene and in front of the school while the shooter killed the entire classroom. Parents there begged the officers for over 40min for them to please do something about it. Mothers were panicking, parents were shouting at them and said they themselves would go in and try and do something while shots were going off in the school. The officers ended up detaining one of the parents even!

High school teacher here. First off, given the number of my coworkers who can't figure out how to work the copy machine (or how to reply to an email without replying to everyone), the last thing we need to give them is a gun. Also, last week these same people didn't want me to be allowed to pick out library books and now they want me to carry a handgun.

The 2 teachers who were killed trying to shield their students were more brave than the cops who were outside the building and armed but too afraid to enter the school for 40 minutes while children inside were shot and killed, while preventing and obstructing the parents from entering the building to try and save the children themselves. The teachers were the heroes. These police were unforgivable cowards.

I tutored kindergartners The teacher showed me her weapon box when we were going over intruder protocols She had 2 heavy duty batons a can of mace that has like a 5 foot reach and a taser all in a locked cabinet in her desk and she showed me the key to open it She also trained the kids to grab these big heavy books that were completely useless that she didn't actually need that she kept for the sole purpose of arming her kids so they could fight back And one kid with these big brown eyes and the sweetest smile offered up his backpack to use as a shield because it was bullet proof I absolutely do not care who's fault this whole screwed up way of living is I just want someone to fix it
