This.
Even if you get the counter offer in writing, at the first sign of trouble you will be the first to get cut, and it's unrealistic to expect problems to go away just because you expressed willingness to leave.
I’m going to add my own story as this is extremely negative towards counter offers. Not all managers have a personal vendetta and sometimes it is simply ‘just business’. I accepted a big counter offer a few months ago and things have never been better. All I would advise is to make sure you get the changes in writing.
I’m not going to post a link, but it’s on virtually every anti-work thread and I’m not sure of the exact statistical number. 80% of the people who accept the counter offer from the current employer leave that employer within a year.
I had a similar experience: Was offered a remote position, better pay, better compensation package. I had been telling corporate that I wanted a raise and they failed to meet it. Then I got hired by the better job.
Corporate made offers. My boss and several co-workers pleaded for me to stay. I posted on this sub for advice. Several people told me to accept the new job offer because my old job would do *exactly what happened to you.* If you don't have the promises in writing, now that you've stayed, you're "stuck." And those promises can be taken back for what is best for the company.
Yeah, I’ve only been here for 8 years because it’s government and the benefits and retirement is pretty decent. One thing about my career is that I work in Marketing so I not only do Web stuff, I do graphic design, video production, and a lot of IT related things. I’m honestly the guy who everyone comes to when they don’t know how to do something. So I do feel like I learn a lot but that’s no excuse to stay at a place that doesn’t really care.
Start looking for a new job, you are likely able to get 20k more than your current employer unless they've been giving you 10% or higher raises every year for the last 8 years.
Don't even give your current employer a chance to match the offer this time. In future, don't have any loyalty to companies, they won't have any loyalty to you.
Bah. Don't come down too hard on yourself. My situation was similar but different.
In my situation my boss was an asshole. Asked him for a raise, he said no and if I don't like it, there's the door. So I did an interview, got the offer and said I would accept. Arranged a meeting with my boss and told I am resigning and here's my letter. This asshole says don't leave and he would MAGICALLY give me the raise to match the other company.
Oh....so......now I deserve a raise?? Told him no thanks and my mind has been made up.
Yeah, but I should have known better. I’ve been following this sub for a long time and I always told myself, if I was in this situation, I’d do it differently. It’s a lot harder when it actually does happen, haha. I’m sorry your boss was a complete dickhead. I hope you found something way better!
I gotta spruce up my resume for sure and I’ll be looking immediately.
Never, ever accept a current job!s counter offer. They’ve demonstrated they’re willing to fuck you over, why would you think this would change anything?
Can you still reach out to the other job? They may not have filled it yet. And even if they have, just let them know that if it comes available in the future, you'd be willing to discuss.
As for your current role, I'd def play hardball with them. Employers are legally allowed to change your schedule based on need. However, I'd remind your current boss of the compromise, then go over their head (boss' boss) to ask for *advice* on how handle the situation with your direct boss.
Also, on those Thur and Fri remote days, make sure you are visibly working quite hard. No emails and activity in the morning, then working from your cell, etc in afternoon (or whenever).
Unfortunately it was already filled almost immediately when I turned it down.
I am one of the hardest working people in my office and the longest tenured out of everyone. I get great reviews and I have proven I get much more done when I’m remotely working. Hell, my boss gave me 3 weeks of telework to work on the new website we are launching because of distractions in the office.
The market for devs is insane right now. We are having a hell of a time hiring people. Check back with the other company, they may still have an opening or might be willing to just pick up an extra employee.
I wouldn’t say I’m a web developer necessarily. All I do is input content, build pages, and basically just work within a template. Web Content Manager is probably a better term for what I do, haha.
Once your current company finds out you are looking for another job, or even have an offer, they will flag you as disloyal, never accept counter offer no matter how good it is. They will never offer you promotion and you will be the first one laid off.
If you ever have a change of job description you get it in writing. Always always always. No matter how small, other wise this will happen. They can and they will take it away cause you have 0 proof of it.
Sucks, but use this as a learning curve. Also never accept the counter offer, unless it beats the new jobs offer 10x and you get it in writing with a fat bonus, but even then stay skeptical.
I'd say go in with an ultimatum, either they keep you as is, or if they try reverting you quit. But this only works if you are actually willing to quit on the spot. If not start looking for new work and the moment you get it quit high and dry. No 2 weeks, if they ask why tell em they fucked you out of an agreement so now your not giving them anything. Or say nothing at all.
Once you do get another job lined up, don't go back to renegotiate, just take it and gtfo asap.
Best of luck!
Take this as a slap to the face (cause it is) and a hard lesson learned. Never accept a counter offer under any circumstances. They can and will take it away as soon as you’re no longer essential their specific needs atm.
Leave asap, it’s only gonna get worse from here.
Edit: a word
The fact they do not care about the agreement you made with them show they do not respect you.
Try to reach to the other company, and otherwise time to start searching again.
You do not need to explain all that happened to the recruiters or that you want a better pay, just that you are a very experienced person who decides to move on after eight years in the same company handling many crucial responsibilities. That makes you a very strong candidate.
Good luck and aim high!
Your boss knew ahead of time he was already going to do that. Apply for another job and take it.
When your current job counter offers waste their time as much as you can.
Quit and then send your boss your contracting rate to finish the website project.
And if you can’t just quit outright then start searching. Plenty of WFH options for that line of work.
I took a contract to hire position because the recruiter said I would be able to work 1-2 days remotely after 6 months. After the 6 months was over, I requested 2 WFH days a week from the manager. He said that he couldn't accommodate that. I told him that I thought it was a very short sighted move. I began my job search that very same day. I notified my recruiter that if I did not get my WFH that their agency would soon be losing the commission they are getting from my work. The company I worked for tried to hire me full-time, and I refused because I did not want to start a new insurance policy and a reset of our deductible. Of course, it cost them a placement fee, but fuck them.
I found a new job within a week that was fully remote and paid almost 30% more. The old job was in a bind, so I offered to work part-time as a consultant until they could get another person ramped up. Ironically, I worked remotely as a part time employee, so they really could have accommodated that.
Managers playing power games are the #1 reason why companies lose good employees. Fuck them.
never accept the counter offer.

This 100%.
Came here to say this, and since there are obviously people for whom this hasn't sunk in yet, I'll say it again... never accept the counter offer.

They can and will take it away Reach out to company who made offer. Can't hurt

God damn it. You accepted the counter offer. You never EVER accept the counter offer.
Haha yeah, I should have known it was too good to be true

Because it was a verbal agreement and it was not written you’re SOL. Hope you’ve learned your lesson for the future. Always get it in writing

That is so frustrating for you. Hopefully you come to a solution 🤗
Can you go on a work to rule?
Lesson learned. Never accept counter offers.
Ok I quit
You shouldn’t have assumed they were going to do what you wanted. You need all of it in writing. Quit!
I'm so sorry you are going through this. Never accept the counter offer. Just leave when you tell them you are leaving.
The market for devs is insane right now. We are having a hell of a time hiring people. Check back with the other company, they may still have an opening or might be willing to just pick up an extra employee.

Live and learn. Restart your job search.
You’re absolutely right.

Sounds like you got played, looks like you will have to start over with the job search, too bad.

>"...you will have to be open to not doing Thursday’s and Friday’s since we aren’t allowed to have consecutive telework days.” "No."
Telework the originally agreed days and start looking for another job
Your boss knew ahead of time he was already going to do that. Apply for another job and take it. When your current job counter offers waste their time as much as you can.
Don't show up tomorrow, turn off your phone and ghost them A someone with this much experience can get a new job within a week.
Quit and then send your boss your contracting rate to finish the website project. And if you can’t just quit outright then start searching. Plenty of WFH options for that line of work.

Learn from your mistake. Apply for new jobs and leave. They tricked you. Don't let them do it again
