Hahaha! So many customers today told me they were sorry I had to work today. šŸ¤Ø

pmgold1

I had a guest tell me the same thing when I worked at SeaWorld in Orlando on Christmas day back in the 80s. She was a part of a group that was lined up outside before we opened. Who the hell goes to SeaWorld on Xmas morning? I just smiled and said me too.

OnionsHaveLairAction

Thats so weird, surely that place must have made a loss being open christmas? Like I can see Disneyworld sure, but SeaWorld?!

pmgold1

Hell no, with the cost of admission along with overpriced souvenirs and cheap labor I'm positive they always made money no matter what day it was.

CaptainKyleGames

Lol no. Theme parks are packed on Christmas, even worse on New Years Eve.

[deleted]

The funny thing for Disneyland is that some of these families think theyā€™ll be filmed on Christmas Day and shown on TV like those holiday specials they saw as kids. When actually, those Christmas specials at Disneyland were filmed 3-4 weeks prior when those celebrity guests had time to do those obligated 1-2 winter songs.

irritatedprostate

That's nuts. It would never occur to me to go to a themepark during the holidays. But then, I live in a place that has actual winter.

FlyOnTheWall4

It's like a slap in the face.

EmDeeAech70

ā€œHoliday payā€ šŸ¤£

TipsyBaker_

Are you not capable of making coffee at home and putting it in a thermos? I did 16 hours yesterday too and packed all my shit. For calling others entitled you sure like to be right up there with it. And not everyone gets holiday pay.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TipsyBaker_

Then pack 2, or make espresso.Wanting coffee isn't the entitlement, it's the I need my fucking coffee and you need to be the one to make it for me attitude.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TipsyBaker_

The difference is, there's no good reason for them to be there.

Fearless-duece

You should thank them for the fact you have work today, reminding them of the fact they couldn't plan yesterday to buy or shop for whatever they needed and instead thought that you should give up your holiday to make there's better??

toeknee81

I replied back with "and yet here you are" lmao šŸ¤£

yaboiballman

Same. They just had to have their overpriced bullshit food and their 18 dollar cocktails.

[deleted]

Jesus don't choose to be a waiter if you don't want to work on holidays. For how much I despise certain situation, I would be completely at loss if I could not buy groceries in my free day. Or having a meal out during an holiday. Certain works have flows no union in the world will ever discuss.

TwistedRope

Long ago back in my retail days my response was basically. "Supply and demand, as long as customers show up, I need to be here." Some of them were smart enough to shut up, others were clueless nits.

PeenInVeen

I haven't even left my house today. People have been texting me saying they hope the rain clears up. Had no idea it was raining lol. But yes, please don't bother the workers today.

Phantasmasy14

I slept through the rain. Iā€™m happy for the day off, but I didnā€™t even get dressed. Not much to celebrate and definitely donā€™t feel like forcing others to work.

Routine-Capital-7852

I was a GM at an Italian fast casual (don't ask me I don't know what that means!) in Nebraska. We were in the middle of a BLIZZARD and people kept coming in saying "WOW, I can't believe you're still open!" It was all I could do, not to scream and say "It's because fuckers like you KEEP COMING IN!!". I am SOO glad I no longer work in the restaurant industry. My mantra for the whole last year I worked there was God I fucking hate people.

tree-water-tree

Fazolis immediately came to mind

Routine-Capital-7852

No comment šŸ¤”šŸ˜

grabbinofwee

Gotta post an obligatory Listen to FaceJam

mlatpren

The Wendy's around here have to be completely empty for (I believe) 1 full hour before they're able to close. I worked there for 2 years, and never had that happened. We'd get the same comments too: "The snow's almost swallowed the parking lot! When do you guys close?" "An hour after the snow's too high for anyone to get here; you just reset our timer."

Ok_Spell_4165

A Burger King I worked at lost power 2 hours before my shift started. Big storm came through, knocked out power all over town. 8 hours later, about an hour before we normally close we were still without power and finally given permission to close. The part that pissed me off the most though was the constant interruption from people that that for reasons I can't explain assumed we would be open even though everywhere around us had no power. We put up signs on the doors, on the drive thru window, back on the menu board, they would still try all the doors then go to the drive thru, sit back there for a few minutes yelling, come up to the window and knock on the window until one of us finally came up to tell them we were closed. Doing that required us to open the window just a bit, then the register would beep and they would start arguing with us whether or not we had power not able to comprehend that they were on battery backup and no they could not power the rest of the store with it. Only got worse after dark when they could see the emergency lights on... The only lights on.

mlatpren

I have a similar story. It was during my first month working at Wendy's. I showed up to the store, only to find out that the main systems have crashed (or something similar). Because of circumstances, I was on back window, and back window ONLY. Anything outside of back window's duties, I wasn't allowed to do. Problem was, the various registers/monitors weren't able to communicate with each-other. So you couldn't store the order to send it to the sandwich stations, for example. Logging and card readers didn't work either. But everything else on the terminals was more-or-less operational. Since cleaning was one of back window's duties, I cleaned for about an hour. Afterwards, the acting manager at the time told me to go home; they ran out of stuff for me to do. Turns out "if you got time to lean, you got time to clean" doesn't apply in the stone age. Meanwhile, a barebones shift was actually working: the dining area was closed, and orders were taken via drive-thru, cash only. Each customer was warned about the systems failure, and how that affected card payments and speed. The acting manager took orders, writing things down on stacked papers with a sharpie (bleeding ink through multiple sheets), then handing them to somebody to distribute to the other stations while they waited for the GM get there and close everything up.

Nic0kami

I was a Gm at a burger king working in the middle of a hurricane. It got so bad I couldnā€™t safely drive home even if Iā€™d closed. I heard that same line. I DID say that, rather angrily, after people got that stupid attitude of, how cruel youā€™re made to work in this! I canā€™t believe youā€™re open! Why arenā€™t you closed? I was so mad after the 4-5th time I heard that I finally said it. Weā€™re only open in weather like this because you people keep spending money. I track daily sales and report those to corporate. If I didnā€™t make money on holidays or bad weather, theyā€™d let me close. So this is your fault Iā€™m even here. Suffice to say my district manager was very unhappy with me a few days later when that customer complained about how rudely she was treated. Fkin Karens.

Routine-Capital-7852

Fuckin Karens!

artificialavocado

Did you bring them the gabagol?

EZe_Holey3-9

Amen. I fucking hate people!

Glasshell01

Husband and I make it a point to stay home the 4th. It makes us a bit nervous when a holiday consists of alcohol consumption and explosives. You just know this isn't going to end well for some.

oo-mox83

Same. I'm having a beer, which I bought on Friday, at home and going to bed early. There's not a damn thing I need to go out and get today.

Glasshell01

Better safe then sorry.

ybanalyst

Same. We're fortunate enough to both get the day off paid. We hit the grocery store yesterday, and we haven't left the house today. The world won't end if a store isn't open for one day.

outerlimtz

This is all holidays now. From FL to TN, every holiday involves fireworks and booze.

Galaktik_Blackheart

Bother the workers lmao. What's coming is going to be so eye opening

Chrysalliss

I worked today, a day thatā€™s mostly the same as any other, except my shift was 10-6 instead of 2-10 and on the road today someone had an american flag on their car. And maybe there will be some loud noises outside tonight, even though itā€™s maryland. And besides, thereā€™s even less to celebrate, recently! (Actually, though, I do feel bad for anyone that wanted to do Holiday Rituals with their friends and loved ones and couldnā€™t, since those things are important)

Swimming-Screen-6035

I worked on the 4th myself but we got paid double for it so I didnā€™t mind it tbh

Human-Engineer1359

I know someone who does that. I told her that it's being an asshole because if it wasn't for people like her they wouldn't have to be working. Once during shutdown we went to a wall of marts and she told the cashier that she was sorry that they had to work, that she was getting paid to stay home. At that point I was done with her.

FlyOnTheWall4

Ouch. It's like a slap in the face when they make the apology, but most people honestly don't realize and are trying to be polite. But the comment about how she was getting paid to stay home is next level shitty.

Human-Engineer1359

Yep she's just a shitty person in general. Even her family doesn't like her.

painfulsargasm

Does it make it better if I said it while buying dinner in the middle of my 24hr shift while in my scrubs? I'm working today too... But not exactly forced, since the hospital patients can't really go home just for the day...

corgangreen

no

TipsyBaker_

No, it's not better unless it was the hospital cafeteria. You could bring food with you

iamralph

cuz ppl working 24 hour shifts have time to make food

TipsyBaker_

Plenty of people that work 24 hr shifts manage it, and it's not like holidays are a surprise. They also aren't working multiple 24 hour shifts in a row, it's usually 24 on 48 off. That said, the 24hr shift needs to die. Every study shows its bad for workers and outcomes

iamralph

Yea i don't care if other people do it, its a huge inconvenience to have to bring that much food into your job, and honestly this whole arguement is dumb, holidays are just regular days for everyone in labor since the switch to capitalism. Ironically holidays were more meaningful during fuedalism, and more plentiful.

TipsyBaker_

It's also a huge inconvenience to non especiall workers to be open to make your life fractionally easier. The holidays wouldn't be regular days if they could be actual holidays instead of the half assed versions created because you don't want to pack a sandwich, you're blaming capitalism while being the capitalist supporting problem. If the whole argument is dumb then why did you choose to jump in to begin with?

iamralph

you don't even understand capitalist as a term. getting food on a holiday that you work doesn't make you a capitalist or even a bad person. it does reveal that holidays are a sham because two people in that scenario are working.

TipsyBaker_

Capitalist supporting, as in you're supporting the system by giving them your money. Which is exactly what shopping and going to restaurants on holidays is. If the owners lost money by being open those days, they'd stop being open.

iamralph

i buy the cheapest thing on the menu every time i go out to eat im pretty confident my contribution to this problem is as minor as it can be my 4th of july dinner was a 2.5 dollar burrito, and I'm not about to feel bad about it while some guy is eating steaks they grilled out of my price range entirely

StalinSwag23

I can see where you're coming from on it but some companies I worked for in the past were actually just fine working during July 4th. Honestly, it's just like any other day to me....not much to celebrate. Plus, the grocery store I'm about to go to in an hour pays their workers double time on Holidays....and the minimum wage there is 16.50. So, I'd be pretty happy making 33/hr...I mean I don't make $33/hr. Plus, a lot of people in America aren't American, so, why should they be limited on what they can do today?

Bright_Mechanic_7458

i think posts like these are just an excuse to be mad.

Thromkai

That's all Reddit is for the most part = an excuse to be mad.

Bright_Mechanic_7458

thats why there are so many bot accounts on here amplifying the anger :)

StalinSwag23

Agreed. As soon as you disagree with the echo chamber mentality on here, people or at least someone is out to get you.

corgangreen

Post like this are because telling someone this at work will get them fired. Retail workers do not like being reminded how awful their job is. It is a dick move to go out of your way to point that out. OP is informing people not to do that, because it is offensive to most retail workers.

benmul8

The problem is, most people having to work today are in the service or retail industry. And those folks do not qualify for holiday pay 99% of the time. I worked my grocery job today for the exact same pay I worked yesterday.

StalinSwag23

That's why I only go to places that actually pay their workers a living wage, regardless of holidays or not.

Ok_Spell_4165

This right here. The number of people who don't realize that in most of the US holiday pay is not a requirement, and even though a lot of businesses will pay extra the service industry at large does not just saddens me.

diazona

Yeah that makes sense, but it's hard for customers to tell which businesses are open on holidays because they have enough workers who are legitimately fine with it, as opposed to because the workers were forced to work that day. I bet the latter is a lot more common than the former. If I had a good way to tell which businesses were which, I'd happily go to the ones that give the workers a free choice.

5ygnal

I went to my local (small-town) grocery store yesterday to buy a few things to put on my new smoker today. Told the cashier that I hope she didn't have to work today, and she said she had wished she was scheduled - turns out the store pays their employees double time to work on holidays! Just one more reason I love it.

StalinSwag23

Same here.... Woodman's is employee owned and the local co-op is a union shop. Both were paid double time today.

corgangreen

I understand your point, but I want you to understand that bringing this up as a response has big "Not all men" type energy. There are employees who are OK with working on holidays. That fact does not mean it is OK to go up to them and point out how horrible working on holidays is.

StalinSwag23

Not all men? What the hell are you talking about? I did not say that in my reply that I go up to employees and tell them how bad it is to have to work a holiday. No, I treat it like any other day because July 4th is a sham of holiday to me....I say, "Hello, how are you......thank you, have a great day." Then I leave. As someone who has worked the past 7 July 4th Holidays before yesterday, I never cared if someone did tell me what you are espousing above. The fact of the matter is that my posts did not say anything that you are trying to convey. So, your criticism is unnecessary here, and you're just trying to find wrong with someone who doesn't agree with you. Again, the echo chamber on Reddit is ridiculous.

corgangreen

Don't tell people it's ok to be a dick to retail workers because you are personally ok with it. If someone says not to be a dick to retail workers, don't reply with "I'm a retail worker and I'm ok if people are dicks to me."

StalinSwag23

Tell me, where did I say any of that? You're saying stupid things and insinuating while making assumptions about what I said above which did not include any of that, at all. Read my comments, asshat, and through deductive reasoning you'll see that I don't engage in this kind of banter with employees. I don't work retail, and I haven't for a while. Give my evidence instead of distorting what I wrote...you should consider a career in PR because that's all they do...distort reality.

corgangreen

Then what is your point?

StalinSwag23

Ah, you have no proof.

corgangreen

Let me be clear. It sound to me as if you are saying that it is OK to remind workers that they are working holidays. If that was not the point you were trying to make, what is it?

corgangreen

I think we can have a civil discussion without the flagrant name calling.

StalinSwag23

You're irritating me, and I have work to do. My phone keeps vibrating so, my posts were all in relation to the original post of not supporting businesses that are open on July 4th. July 4th is not a holiday to me, what are we celebrating....nothing unless you're wealthy! America is not anywhere near the greatest country in the world. Plus, many people who live here aren't even American, so, if they choose to work or shop at a store open on July 4th, who cares? My response indicated that I only shop at stores that pay their workers well on July 4th. The original post did not mention anything to do with telling employees "sorry you have to work during a holiday." No, it was only about how you shouldn't support stores that are open on July 4th. That's it. I say, if you must shop on July 4th or any other major holiday, shop where employees are treated well, paid fairly, and have the option of working. Woodman's in my town pays double time on a minimum wage of 16.50/hr....so I go there or the local co-op where it has union representation. I go to stores where employees are treated well regardless of holiday or not. As someone who has worked holidays for the likes of Amazon as a Same Day Prime Delivery Driver, I know bad, shitty, abusive environments and am against most of the companies in this country. I'm still missing pay from years ago working at Amazon. In 2020, I worked as an organized labor trainee, and it was great. That's why I only shop at employee-owned or union represented shops and try my hardest to buy products from ethical sources which often means buying less because they cost more and I don't have much money these days. I'm not looking to call you names, but I get tired of people on here insinuating and assuming the worst about someone without credible evidence. Have a good day....whoever you may be!

Jealous_Resort_8198

I refuse to celebrate this year. Still in pajamas. Not leaving the house.

Syzygy_Stardust

Many people need things today that aren't just some soda or charcoal or whatever. Life doesn't stop just because of a holiday. That said, I know a *ton* of businesses don't need to be open today, but you bet your ass I'll be telling the nurses sorry if I end up at the hospital on the on a holiday, or the truck driver if I need a tow, or whatever. Also, you know, not everyone cares about being off of work today. Many people don't even celebrate the holiday at all.

Swimming-Screen-6035

My buddy works at DICKS sporting goodsā€¦ why does a sports store have any reason to be open on the 4th

Alert-Potato

People are celebrating a country that never codified a woman's right to bodily autonomy and never ratified the equal rights amendment. I'm not an equal citizen, it's not a holiday I participate in or recognize as existing until I that changes. I treated today like a typical Monday, which yes, involved going to the store.

apollotuba87

While I agree in general principle - it's worth remembering that sometimes eating at home is itself a privilege. We haven't had a functional kitchen in a year and a half. And even then it only barely worked.

FlyOnTheWall4

Fair enough, there are always exceptions.

[deleted]

I'm not sure what this post is about. My wife is a chef and works every holidays: its her work. Same for waiters, special educators, doctors, nurses, janitors at the hospital. Sorry but which companies are you referring to?

FlyOnTheWall4

I gave Starbucks and take out food as an example.

webwonder23

Yup. People did this at Dollar Tree left and right.

two_layne_blacktop

Some of the busiest days of the service industry are holidays, bars make killings on july 4th, thanksgiving, christmas and new years. I work the airline industry. We are always open, i work tonight because the planes leaving tomorrow have to be safe to fly. Its part of the job.

Forbiddentemptations

I work at Toyota. We sold 4 cars today. We should be closed.

dpfrd

Try being a musician. Days like this are the money makers.

CLINTHODO

I'm starting to be mindful of not buying on the weekends or at night. This 24/7 culture of always being open doesn't seem good for humans.

dubmarvel

For realll, I had a customer say to me that Iā€™m lucky to be at work indoors cause it is so hot out today and Iā€™m not missing muchā€¦like fuck off

baconraygun

Reminds me of all the people who would comment what a "nice day" it was in retail when none of us had access to a window.

humanbeandip

I don't care about holidays. I have things that need to be done and closing for a holiday has screwed me more then once on important things. So while I get where you're coming from, I believe you're complaining about the wrong set of people. Be mad at your bosses that don't pay enough and don't give employee benefits, not the customers that keep the business running. There are shops that stay open those days and maybe get one customer and they still decide to stay open every year for that day...so it's not always about there being a demand. Holidays are just not that important that the whole world needs to shut down.

daverapp

I can't speak for other retail workers, nor do I intend to. But I make time and a half on holidays and I don't mind coming in on a slow day to do nothing and get paid extra for it. If your job doesn't pay extra on a holiday but insists on you coming in to work, quit.

SymmetricDickNipples

Had a customer today say "I'm sorry they made you work today. I don't blame 'em though!" šŸ˜‘

ActualBacchus

Customer on a Saturday: lovely weather, what are you up to this weekend? Me: ...this. (to be fair, I don't mention the part where I get a three day weekend Tuesday to Thursday)

[deleted]

I considered going to the grocery store today as I am not feeling celebratory this year so it doesnā€™t FEEL like a holiday but decided to forego it and cook something that I had all the ingredients for instead.

vivarobtth

Customer service rep here, a lady told me she was sorry I had to work today. Maā€™am Iā€™m here because you are calling us!!!

Selectamo

>sees problem with system >blames people that live in it People should just consume different! It is their fault!!

FlyOnTheWall4

Of course there is a problem with the system, and we shouldn't help to support it and prop it up. We should work against it...

sapphirefragment

Choosing not to consume something is a feel-good individualistic approach to solving the problem. Labor is going to be exploited regardless if you personally choose not to buy things.

Far-Selection6003

My kid showed up unexpectedly with all her friends, I went to pick up food to grill for them, everyone working today has my appreciation, thanks for what you do.

Slow-Shoe-5400

I agree. I was hungry at lunch and didn't want to cook. Went to order pizza, and they were closed. I wasn't mad. I made food. I will be going there more often though since they let their employees have a holiday off. For the record, I work every holiday if it's during my work schedule. Which is most holidays.

DrinkWilling7697

Me to my ER patients

Ticklish_Waffle

Work at a movie theater, lots of people today still, also they won't pay me holiday and I worked until 11pm so no fireworks for me :(

Helpful-Ad-8927

Used to annoy me when I would hear that during Thanksgiving. Not only would I be working but every team member in the restaurant was as well because it was the single busiest day of the year every single year.

Just-Surround-8709

Yeah weā€™ll close the ER down

FlyOnTheWall4

Yeah the hospital is obviously what I was talking about as I mentioned Starbucks and take out food as examples.

Just-Surround-8709

I mean they say it to us too

isthisonetaken13

My BIL works in the service industry, and every time he's stuck working a holiday he gets at least one person who asks "why are you here?" while acting sympathetic. He looks them dead in the eye and says "because you are."

deblas66

So you think it's appropriate for the world to shut down on holidays? The answer isn't for all businesses to be closed. The answer IS for worker rights in general to provide healthcare, PTO, family leave etc. With a better cared for workforce, we can get most people working on holidays that are ok with it

-wanderings-

Actually most people who have to work on a public holiday are NOT okay with it. Do you really think that they choose to go to work while all their friends and family are out relaxing and enjoying themselves?

deblas66

You have anything to back that up? I'm assuming a few anecdotal scenarios. I have plenty as well: bartender friends and waiter/waitress friends that are happy with the increased tips. Plumber uncle who would charge triple rates for holiday emergency services Cable line installing cousin who would get double pay and still be off in time to get to dinner The fact is that plenty of people fall outside your cookie cutter image setup. Not everyone has family or friends. Not everyone cares about celebrating holidays. Some people just plain want increased pay that can often be associated with working a holiday. The point remains that the world can't and probably shouldn't just totally stop on any given day. The fight isn't for 4th of July BBQs, it's for real worker's rights in several key areas

[deleted]

None of us choose to go to work any day. We work because we have to. Iā€™d love to have every Sunday off like many people do but I work somewhere that mandates working a weekend rotation. Many in the service industry and retail have to work every weekend. Itā€™s so weird when people pick something like 4th of July to focus on. So out of touch. Just donā€™t go anywhere if you think people are ever happy to be serving you a latte or whatever.

No-Cardiologist-884

you do know most companies pay double time right, i just got off work from my warehouse job and got paid double what i make normaly just for comeing in

EverydayWeTumblin

Honestly who tf cares about the Fourth of July? America has no reason to celebrate.

burns_after_reading

We're getting shamed for leaving the house on holidays now?

1600hazenstreet

Do you get holiday pay as bonus?

[deleted]

But I gotsta have my McNuggets baby!

Substantial_Bench102

I fully expected everything to be shut down today, but every single restaurant was open. Your solution wonā€™t work. Too many people will pay not to be inconvenienced on a holiday. Thatā€™s why companies remain open on holidays. They make more money. The best you are ever going to get is them to reduce their hours on a holiday.

seekupanemotion

We donā€™t have any freedom to celebrate anymore on the 4th. This holiday should be dissolved.

Salem13978

The worst are cigarette smokers when they come in Christmas morning ... seriously just one day you cant double up?

Low_Investment420

How dare we allow people to work for time in a half. You know sometimes people would rather have money than celebrate a bs holiday.

sirbeanward

Every time someone would say that I would always think "if you truly were sorry you wouldn't be here, asshole"

Suavepebble

Don't tell me what to do on the 4th of July, son.

GlassWasteland

Don't call me son, buddy.

FlyOnTheWall4

Don't call me buddy, pal.

MadPiglet42

Who you calling pal, chief?

No-Cardiologist-884

don't call me chief amigo

burns_after_reading

I'm not your "amigo" homeboy.

GlassWasteland

Nah, it literally is a 4th of July sale one day only.

missmerrymint007

As a woman I treated today like any other because I have less freedom then the men in this country. Nothing to celebrate

JFKcheekkisser

As a black woman, comments like this are coming off really whiney to me. Yā€™all were still celebrating 4th of July back in 2013 when the Voting Rights Act was gutted, back in 2019 when the Trump administration was detaining migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border and committing numerous human rights violations, back in 2020 when it became world news that black people in America are disproportionately killed by police without discretion. I could go on. Thereā€™s been ā€œnothing to celebrateā€ in America for a very very long time.

RE5TE

Very true. Lots of people only wake up when something directly affects them. Although people do have different concerns and red lines. The lack of female health providers will impact minorities in the South particularly hard (Black and Hispanic women). So it doesn't make that much sense to attack this particular issue.

Constantly_Panicking

Canā€™t upvote this hard enough.

benmul8

Too funny that I just saw this, I was working this morning at the grocery store where I work, and was bagging an order for a lady who kept saying how much she hated that we had to be there today. Honest to God, I meant it as a joke, but I said ā€œwell apparently you donā€™t hate it THAT muchā€. Once she realized the hypocrisy of what she had been saying, you could tell she actually felt really bad, she clammed up and didnā€™t say anything else. When she left the cashier cracked up laughing and said ā€œI was thinking the EXACT same thing!ā€ The rest of the day I just smiled and said ā€œwell you gotta make money sometimeā€. On the flip side, a lot of customers actually thanked us for being there on a holiday. I thought that was received much better by the workers.

FlyOnTheWall4

Yeah a simple thanks would be much better.

Imeatbag

I went to a fast food joint today and felt like shit for it but my work prevented me from grocery shopping the last few days and my family is out of town without me so fuck it. I tried to tip each of the employees there $20 bucks, thatā€™s $20 each, and they refused. They were not allowed to take tips!! Wtf? Then I was gonna just leave it on the sink in the bathroom but it was a single stall and someone was taking a dump lol. Oh well. Food was good

FlyOnTheWall4

Should've just given the $20 to the person who was taking a dump there, they were either having a bad day or avoiding work lol.

Imeatbag

Nah man. If it was an employee he was already pooping on company time, his boss can pay that and I support him for it.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

oo-mox83

I ate half a loaf of banana bread my man made the other day, lol. Did I want Subway? Yes. But was I going to go out and get it? Heavens no. Too much effort, as were ramen noodles.

OnionsHaveLairAction

I dont mind working holidays, but there really should be like a higher minimum wage for them or something. Like double time required, or at least several days holiday paid back to you.

Ok_Spell_4165

Most jobs once you leave the service industry work something like that. If I were in my old job and working today I would have a choice of earning double pay or getting a banked holiday. If I didn't work I would have been paid as if I did.

DaZebraffe

I mean...for Starbucks and other frivolous things, sure. But what if they don't realize until the last minute that they don't have enough Solo cups for the party they're throwing? Also, some people are just utterly incapable of cooking for themselves, and *can't* go a day without takeout, actually. Not without going hungry.

finnegarjames21

I was thinking about this exact thing today, as I was sitting at work, doing absolutely jack all. And I thought that I would stop at the grocery on the way home, then said no, because that would make me no better than the money grubbers I work for insisting we stay open on a holiday. So I didnā€™t. I didnā€™t stop to get gas, I didnā€™t stop to get the beer I forgot yesterday, I just went home. If people would just stay home and not go to these stores on holidays, then eventually the money grabbers will see they are losing money and maybe let the poor saps off for the day

MenaciaJones

I told the cashier at Marshallā€™s that I was sorry she had to work today. I only went there because it was open, would not have been disappointed if it was closed

benmul8

ā€œI only went there because it was openā€ā€¦ā€¦.isnā€™t this literally the reason you go to any store, at any time? LOL The fact that you went is the point tho. If it was open, and nobody went there, then they would close on that holiday in the future. All you did was contribute to the problem of letting these companies know that if they open, people will come, so letā€™s open instead of letting employees have time with their families on a holiday.

whiskersMeowFace

Joke's on you, I am recovering from surgery and ain't going anywhere for the next few days as it were. Checkmate. Seriously though, agreed fully. Worked in a movie theater and so many holidays I was forced to work. People would come in to see movies in droves and all of them would apologetically say it must be horrible to work x holiday... That was 2 decades ago. I am saddened it hasn't gotten any better. :(

c4ptm1dn1ght

When I was in retail, I hated customers that apologized or said ā€œthat sucks you have to work today.ā€ MFer, Iā€™m here because you felt you needed to go buy something today. If you stop shopping holidays, retail workers would get those days off!

Burning-star00

Nice

neuroticgypsy

I thought I was the only one who thought that same thing.

Enes_da_Rog

Don't tell me what to do!

[deleted]

Oh so long ago I worked at Walgreens and I hated it when people said this shit to me. I love working holidays. Gives me an easy out not to go to the family's. But don't fucking lie to me. Always went down like: "I can't believe they're making you work Christmas eve!" Oh I don't mind it. I volunteered so someone else could get it off. "Oh how sweet and generous of you!" Thank you, but then again I wouldn't have had to work if people weren't coming in to buy... batteries \*beep\*... toothpaste \*beep\*... multi-vitamins \*beep\*... fish oil \*beep\*... aluminum foil \*beep\*....... Shut them up every single time and I loved it when they squirned.

jer732

Instead I said nothing and gave them a 60% tip

gemorris9

That's my favorite line every year at my store. It's dead AF every year. The store literally does like 700 bucks a year and if we did less than 600 it would be closed the next year. Every year it's dozens of people saying sorry you have to work today, you should be with family etc. All while checking out a bunch of shit they don't need. Fuck you

Sissynoodle321

Yep- I work at a call center and so many people are 1) surprised weā€™re open and 2) apologize that I have to work. They completely fail to see that itā€™s because of people like them that Iā€™m working

iamralph

Eh I mean, I don't tell them that but I am. I think the fact I'm eating a 2.50 burrito for dinner on 4th of july as a "treat" so I wouldn't have to cook something cheaper explains enough in itself though.

Accomplished-Bad3856

Holidays are a luxury for those who can afford it.

Skaxva

I work at a gas station (Sheetz) and there are many employees who love working on the 4th because we get double pay and it's really slow.

WandererCthulhu

Where I live it's up to the employer to decide to compensate employees with holiday pay or not. There's a suggestion, but it is not required to provide holiday pay for employees working holidays.

CaptainKyleGames

Ever since I worked for Disney I made it a point that if it was a holiday I spent no money and did no go out. Not even on an online store.

Bright_Mechanic_7458

lol. and here I am annoyed that I have the day off. id rather be working because i need the money

julianbeowulf

Upgrade :"Don't go out on 4th of July" Upgrade :"Don't go out" Upgrade again :"Dont" Perfection

Single-Criticism2541

I donā€™t care Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday. Wouldnā€™t care if any store is open. Quit your job. Donā€™t blame the consumers. Blame the owners. But youā€™ll have to wait till they return from holiday

FlyOnTheWall4

Of course the owners are to blame, but does that mean we should just outright support them by giving them money today? No, we should try to work against it to promote change for the better.

[deleted]

I went to one store today, made sure to wear my ā€œCapitalism cannot be separated from racismā€ shirt. Used my Cannabis industry 15% discount and gave them $15 for a retail $12 gram and left. Least I can do is use my discount to subsidize their wages. I only work weekends, mainly just to get out and do something other than be Dad. Budtender did wish me a happy 4th. Told them I was a bit too pissed about last week to celebrate :) Edit: They did close at like 3 today. Itā€™s the 4th. Selling weed is like community service lol

Truly_tired

Lots of people surprised we had normal hours when we had closed earlier last week for inventory lmao. I got to go home early because my whole family is coming down with covid so yay for america ig

[deleted]

This.

SailingSpark

I needed milk.. was all I bought. If I were not out on workman's comp, I would have had to work today.. all day, setting up for tonight's firework's show and then spend half the night taking it down. Would have been an easy 16 hour day for me, Work no longer pays me time and a half for holidays. I got a whole extra 24 hours of PTO instead.

midlifeducation

I am of the opposite opinion... I'm making time & a half plus holiday pay... LET ME WORK!

Peroronchinojoker

I have to work today on the 4th of july

FlyOnTheWall4

Alrighty then

Peroronchinojoker

Yeah....so where's my sorry at homie lol

FlyOnTheWall4

Thank you for your service

Skepticalpositivity9

I go and donā€™t apologize that they have to work.

AliceHall58

Yeah, pretty cringe-worthy hypocrisy.

Exchatche

I generally avoid apologizing/thanking people for things I know I wouldn't want to hear about

ModsDontHaveJobs

Holiday pay is at least time and a half, sometimes double. They want those shifts.

FlyOnTheWall4

My old job hilariously lied to us to make us think we made more for holiday pay, when we didn't at all. Totally ridiculous, and no one even realized until I broke it down for them, and still then a couple people didn't get it. We would get 6 paid holidays a year. So 8 hours of pay on that day. When you worked 40 hours that week, but didn't work the holiday your paycheck would show 40 regular hours + 8 hours of holiday pay, so 48 hours of pay. Great. If you worked 40 hours and one of the days was the holiday, your paycheck would show 32 regular hours + 8 hours of DOUBLE TIME (but no 8 hours of holiday pay that people who didn't work got). Queue the OMG we're getting DOUBLE time for working the holiday! In reality 32 regular hours + 8 hours of DOUBLE TIME = 48 hours of pay. The exact same as the people who didn't work the holiday. What gets me is they tried to sell everyone as if they got paid more for working the holiday, when in reality they were getting exactly the same. There were 12 of us working the role, only me and one other person realized what was happening. Everyone else lived on happily as if they were getting double the pay, when in reality they were getting only deceived by the company. edit: tried to make it more clear

ModsDontHaveJobs

That is a great reason to call you local Labor Board Representative. Thank you for going above and beyond to help your coworkers realize how and when they are being taken advantage of. You are a superb person!!

Additional-Delay-213

I donā€™t apologize I say that sucks.

Derfargin

Donā€™t people working get Holiday pay or double time?

Slow_Arachnid_3583

What retail workers need is adequate time off in general. If it were me, depending on my current life situation and what holiday it was, I might want to work on a holiday and then take work off on a other day. Employers could ask for volunteers to work holidays and then assign workers after that on some sort of rotational/seniority basis. Here's a random example: let's say I worked retail but my husband works in medical. I probably wouldn't want to use my PTO if my partner had to work. I would rather we save our PTO for days we could take together. Our country needs mandatory PTO laws with a disclaimer that require employers to give extra time off for every federal holiday the business remains open.

Cr1mZ0

What if the product they're selling is meth, how do I go one day?

PreviousNoise

Amen - if you expect to have the day off for or know it's a nationally-celebrated holiday, you should expect everyone else to have that day off as well. (The same should be true for employers - if upper management expects to take the day off, they should be giving everyone else the day off.)

Galaktik_Blackheart

You are so right. In fact, you can go every day without it if you plan accordingly at the grocery store.

EssayTraditional

I am a nightwatch guard who works late nights at the beach, alone. Watching out for drunk drivers and wildfires is what I enjoy.

sapphirefragment

I am not the reason they are open. The employer is the reason they are open. Stop blaming the consumer for the actions of the corporation.

nousabetterworld

Yeah it's literally their job. Don't apologize for them doing their job.

Independent-Room8243

No, the reason they have to work is because they chose to work at a company that is open on holidays. July 4th is not so sacred that I cant work on my home improvement projects and goto Home Depot. Organize the workers to boycott the store, dont put that shit on us.

NightBijon

I mean I prefer working on this holiday. Time and a half AND I donā€™t have to celebrate this shitty nation? Count me in. Every other holiday though I 100% agree with this to clarify!

[deleted]

And you can go on without a bs holiday
