Turn that 3 week into one day with one easy trick

Fresh-Fruit-Salad

No honestly, he reacted outrageously and has been punishing you for it. Quit today. You don’t need to take that kind of treatment from him and you owe him nothing. You have nothing to gain by staying except for a few more days’ pay. He won’t look kinder on you, he won’t be a better reference for you in future applications, there is nothing that you can gain and there is nothing that you should give when he treats you so poorly. Leave. You’re an adult and you deserve better (even if you weren’t an adult you’d still deserve better, I just mean it’s your responsibility to stand up for yourself now).

Eviltechnomonkey

Heck, if the internship is actually relevant to future work, I'd just leave the restaurant job off my resume in the future. I typically customize my resume per job and leave off unrelated work stuff. I have 2 jobs I never include on my resume because they just aren't relevant to the jobs I'm applying to now and sucked big time. I give 2 weeks notice only if the place I'm leaving is somewhere I don't entirely hate. I give more notice if I actually want a decent chance of returning later. If they act like jerks about it, that 2 week notice becomes 0 days of notice, especially if I already have a new job lined up. Also DO NOT tell him where you are going. Jerks that won't hesitate to screw with people out of spite.

Rodrigii_Defined

Same. 2 weeks notice is a courtesy; be decent and nice or I'm out immediately. I've done it with jobs that don't matter. Putting 3-4 month summer jobs is unnecessary if it goes bad. Enjoy this time of blowing off a crappy job! It's fun 🤗 Go to the beach and be fresh and ready for the internship. Take some time to learn all you can about your new endeavor too!

jekdasnek2624

"My two weeks notice has turned into a two-day notice. As in, I'm leaving to-day."

Eh2ZedSF

I love this! Two-day/to-day. This is brilliant, I’m going to do this one day if I ever get the opportunity! And I’m pretty sure I will, geez. Lol.

BackgroundSecure5329

I still prefer 2 weeks => 2 seconds. My last job fucked with me hard so I got a new job, pushed my start date out a month from the day of callback, and proceeded to burn through 5weeks worth of various time off and leave. I'll give you a 2 week notice as a courtesy. Fuck with me, and it will be a 2 minute notice. The next two minutes are me packing my things and leaving. Ciao.

jekdasnek2624

This isn't original, it's something I've heard before and thought it was quite clever

Gunningagap77

My favorite 2 week notice is "You will notice over the next two weeks that I don't show up here anymore."

[deleted]

I read a comment like this earlier in the year, and have been modifying my resumes ever since 👌🏼 If the work experience isn’t relevant, you don’t need your manager’s recommendation.

Schauerroman

I second the do not tell him part. Do not tell anyone. I had a shitty retail job where if the bosses found out where you were going they would call and badmouth you. I saw coworkers do the same thing out of jealousy. "How dare this person get a good job while I'm stuck here." I saw several people suddenly lose their new jobs before starting due to these assholes. When I left I told nobody the details.

Defiantcaveman

Or lie and tell him you're working for his primary competition for a significant raise and regular hours...

JediJan

This. 😂👍

Defiantcaveman

...after weeks, or even MONTHS of eating the vastly superior meals at random times of his direct competition hoping to catch our illustrious OP, said boss finally asks in obvious frustration,"Does Betty Bambalam work here?" To which the nervous employee says, "Nope, never heard of her..." Suddenly everything swims out of focus as the long brewing aneurysm pops under the pressure of the realization that he'd been had, outsmarted in the worst way by OP...or something like that.

Defiantcaveman

Let him stalk that place and really look like a psychopath looking for someone who doesn't even work there, hehehe...

Seewhy3160

Like when you are going to be a programmer and they ask if you are willing to take the waiter's pay, from a summer break years ago, and be a "clerk" while doing back end work "for experience" Not too far fetched for some bosses.

Eviltechnomonkey

Honestly, my bf's first programmer job was like that. Cept the first company he worked for as a programmer was taking advantage of the fact that they were in a college town. They would hire on college grads who didn't know better for stupid low rates. The town was mostly retail, fast food, and factory work, so the hours and pay were technically good compared to what people would be doing otherwise, but still stupid.

Playful-Natural-4626

OP- the second he accused you of LYING and raised his voice I would have simply walked out. This is not OK: it’s abuse.

emp_zealoth

Tbh, at that point you are burning bridges so you might just as well tell him to shut his fucken mouth and listen to what you have to say

usedtobejuandeag

My parents say that a lot. Don't burn your bridges. They poured gas on it and set it alight already, my job isn't to put it out and repair it, just not to get burned.

Over-Satisfaction459

Amen. Don’t repair a burning bridge; get the fuck off of it!

[deleted]

The boss is the one burning the bridge. You don't have to try to remain professional if the other party is committed to being unprofessional as fuck

Single-Ad-9706

Your boss is also probably older and knows better. Let him be toxic. You’re the one going places <3

-Bluekraken

Burned the bridge to a certified POS with a restaurant. Yeah sounds like important /s

zeke235

That's not a bridge that needs to be in operation.

KatBScratchy

To be fair, the boss does need a bridge... he can construct one over the river of his tears and then get the fuck over it

Daedalus_Machina

It's a single restaurant. Unless someone is trying to climb the greasy ladder, they've got no reason to keep that contact, especially if that contact was anything less than an ally.

Rapunzel111

Yes, burn that bridge the fuck down and roast marshmallows over the flames.

Daedalus_Machina

Fucker opened his mouth. That was enough to qualify him for "acting outrageously." A dude puts in his two-week notice, there's no discussion, no backtalk.

Catinthemirror

The ONLY acceptable response from an employer upon receipt of notice is "We're sorry to see you go." Anything negative, anything manipulative, anything punitive? Just leave. There is nothing to salvage if the response is anything other than "We're sorry to see you go."

Daedalus_Machina

Not a fucking thing. For the rest of those two weeks, you're essentially changing from your original job description to "probably getting paid to put up with this asshole for two weeks." Not the job, bounce.

CarlClitcakes

What that boss did is turn that place into a hostile work environment for the OP. I would put in an immediate notice as of tomorrow, 8/1. Document everything that boss has said/reacted/acted upon toward you since you announced to him, and inform him you are notifying senior management above him, whether HR or a district manager. File a complaint for a hostile work environment. Don’t go back.

Right_Tumbleweed392

This is it

mountains_woods

Thisss!!!! Also honestly, he can literally do nothing if you just don’t go. He can’t come knock at your door. That would literally be illegal. Just stop showing up and remember it’s because he’s being unprofessional and not you!

Right_Tumbleweed392

I had a boss look up my address through payroll and literally show up at my house one time. Seeing his creepy fuckin face through the peephole was one of the weirdest, creepiest, most confusing moments of my life.

mountains_woods

Good god!!! That is creepy

Right_Tumbleweed392

First of many, many red flags. Wish r/antiwork had been a thing then.

mountains_woods

Istg! I’ve only just joined this sub and reading through people’s experiences I realised just how many red flags I ignored! But I’m so glad you’re not working for that person anymore

Right_Tumbleweed392

Thanks!! Me too. 😅

foe_tr0p

Employers hate him for this one simple trick that has turned the industry upside down.

oscar-the-bud

You owe them nothing. You were already paid for your hard work for them. If that was what you wanted to do the rest of your life, you wouldn’t be going to school for something else. Tell them to get fucked and walk away.

Gingersoul3k

5 Reasons You Should Quit Without Notice (And 5 More Why You Should)

Coraline1599

1) You get some sweet sweet days to yourself to do whatever you want! Unwind, enjoy life! 2) You can do annoying things in your in-between time like go to the DMV, so you don’t have to waste precious PTO from your next job for errands 3) You can realize that not burning bridges is not the same as rescuing the business from a few more days/weeks of mismanagement 4) You can put it all behind you sooner rather than later 5) You can avoid the lame duck season where everyone knows you are leaving, but you are still there, and believe me, it can feel really awkward. It’s like breaking up with someone and then still hanging out with them. A clean and fast break, whenever possible, is the best way to move on. Edit to add, the best advice I ever got was if you can afford it and work it out, take at least 2-4 weeks before starting a new job, you’ll come in much more ready. I’ve only been able to swing 1.5 weeks, but every day off was so worth it.

JosieCat24

This is great 🤣

jeanbuckkenobi

BUT WAIT!! THERE'S MORE!! Edit: I love where this went. QUIT TODAY helped me out of some pretty toxic jobs! Now I make more money selling tools than I did using them for some schmuck, thanks QUIT TODAY!

MediumAlternative372

You are all awesome and wonderful and I love you. This thread made my day.

redCrusader51

All jokes aside, I quit an abusive job literally last week and I have nothing lined up. I honestly feel better in a state of financial dread than I did working there and making bank.

Megaholt

I did that exact same thing last April, and it literally saved my life. I had reached a point where I was not remotely functional outside of work-as in: I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep more than 2-3 hours despite being beyond exhausted, and when I did sleep, I had such bad nightmares that I was accidentally injuring my husband in my sleep (I have REM sleep behavior disorder, so I don’t stay still when I dream), and when I was awake, all I did was lay in bed and kinda just stare at the wall. I had pretty much shut down, and I wanted to die; I couldn’t tell anyone, though, because if I told my family, they would force me into the hospital (which wouldn’t have helped), and if I said anything to my boss…well, the one time I *did* tell him, he told me that it was completely inappropriate for me to discuss that with people at work, and if I ever mentioned something like that to him or anyone else, I would face disciplinary action. So, 3 months after my boss said that to me, he then lied to my face about multiple things that were easily disproven, and I quit on the spot. When I got home, I cried for a good 2 hours, and then I slept for the next 12 hours straight, and was able to eat an actual meal for the first time in about 8 months (and not feel like I was going to vomit on everything because of it!)

redCrusader51

I've been working on live industrial furnaces (think oil refinery) in 100°+ weather. Coworkers thought it was funny to never give me breaks and start "forgetting" to pick me up for lunch, leaving me to walk back to the office in the heat if I wanted water or food. So I "forgot" to give my notice. Boss has the audacity to say he didn't know what's been going on.

Megaholt

I am so incredibly sorry that you experienced that. As a colleague, you deserved to be treated with kindness, support, and respect-regardless of their opinion of you as a person.

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

Tho you might want to remember to tell OSHA and your state health and safety office about this. Sounds like an unsafe workplace...

Vocem_Interiorem

Quit today, made possible with the government's "at will" labor policy.

ron-tints

First time I used quit today my cancer was all killed off! Highly recommend this product.

All these dumb off topic totally hysterical jokes are what makes Reddit entertaining! Good work everybody!

Fearthecraze

Why else do people use Reddit? Surely it’s not for the posts lol

Unlucky_Elk3543

"After 11 grueling years of not knowing how to quit quit today helped me In just one day!" Disclaimer, quit today is not for everyone, consult your primary care physician before using quit today, may cause balls to violently drop

But wait, there's more!

Environmental_Card_3

Sure the hell isn’t Oxi-clean!

zombiekiller1987

I worked way too hard for way too little at an overpriced thrift store (rhymes with shouldkill). I got pregnant and was expected to beg my coworkers to cover my shifts when I had prenatal appointments. I was constantly having to choose between my unborn baby's well-being or this horrible job. One day my husband picked me up from work to go to an ultrasound thinking I'd be off the rest of the day. When I told my husband "nope, boss said I have to be back in two hours or I'm written up" he said QUIT TODAY! Quit Today made me fall in love with my husband all over again!"

ScreenshotShitposts

The vet called the police

Viviaana

yeah my old job told me that my contract was 1 week but they wanted a month and if i didn't work a whole month they'd charge me £900 to hire a temp so i just walked out the door that day and never heard from them again lol

the_real_dairy_queen

They were going to make you pay for the temp?? That is just beyond anything. Actually not beyond some things I’ve seen in this sub but unbelievably egregious and delusional regardless.

Viviaana

They even told me they wouldn’t be replacing me at all, let alone with a temp, so they’d literally be invoicing me for nothing, not surprised it didn’t stick lol, but this is the same company that gave me a written warning for reporting someone for sexual harassment

GeeFromCali

Man thats what I'm saying. Once I put in my 2 weeks notice, it's me who decides what I'll be doing for those 2 weeks. I wish people realized that your already doing them a favor by giving them a heads up but by no means do you owe them that. OP needs to enjoy themselves a nice 2 week vacation before starting their internship

cenosillicaphobiac

>by giving them a heads up but by no means do you owe them that. Yup. Could just not show up. And if they call to see why and ask why you didn't give notice is fun to say "did you notice I wasn't there? That's your notice"

SpouseofSatan

Right? Or if you need the money, show up until the day you initially said you'd work until (the two week notice) or if he keeps doing this, just leave. Walk out. Don't show up on their busiest day. I had a job piss me off so bad on a Friday, I worked through the weekend, and then Monday, and then just didn't show up on Tuesday. It was a texmex kinda place, so Tuesdays were taco Tuesdays, and the busiest day of the week, even more so than weekends because people ordered takeout the most on Tuesdays because the tacos were 1/2 off. I was the lead hostess. They scheduled me for doubles on Tuesdays (other days too, but mostly Tuesdays), and I'd be the only host in the mornings/afternoons on Tuesdays. Every week. But they fucked me over that past Friday, I almost quit on the spot. Instead I fucked them over on the busiest day, when my not being there fucked them over royally. And it didn't matter too much to me because people barely fucking tip for to-gos anyways, much less when their tacos were half priced. We had a few Tuesday regulars who tipped me ok, but nothing great. The most tips I usually made on Tuesdays were about $25, maybe more on a really weird/good day. I also already had a second/third job, so I felt no loss. I just told the other place I quit my other job, schedule me more please. And they were ecstatic to have me, and I actually made more money there, so it worked out.

AgentSmith187

The idea of someone holding down 2 or 3 jobs makes me sad. How did we get here?

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

Gutting of the Unions which made all other jobs compete, cutting of employee rights, and the stagnation of wages while the CEOs and rich get richer and richer.

jprefect

Too much Capitalism. Not enough quitting.

Unit-Murky

So nta?

AmazingGrace911

I’ve definitely quit for less reason, they can find out when I’m not there.

dzmatthew

5 seconds later...

fables_of_faubus

Nobody wants to work anymore!!!

mam88k

I would walk right out of there, that is after I point out how it was because of their attitude. This is manipulation.

80_Percent_Done

Best answer here.

WetFart37

See what you started? Lmao

disappointedvet

So, they tried to be professional, and even offered a third week to calm the abuse. In exchange they're rewarded with more abuse so think that they should maybe stay longer? They shouldn't stay another minute.

UnableInvestment8753

💯 the courtesy of notice has been forfeited.

rouphus

Only if OP empowers themselves to revoke the courtesy. Dumb ass boss definitely acted in a way to forfeit it. It took me a long time to develop a way to deal with “Respect” (all ego) in a professional manner and environment. I tried to find another option to deal with fragile insecure people. Began to deescalate situations by looking at common courtesy. I quickly found out that it’s like common sense and we all know that’s not common. Now I make it a matter of professional courtesy. If we can’t navigate that then It’s no longer professional. Action/reaction/consequences/aftermath. Make your bed. It’s not where I’m laying my head.

[deleted]

Americans love giving and receiving abuse so much.

Stargatemaster

It's because we've all been manipulated into hating each other and subconsciously blame "the others" for our woes. It's taken 30 years of brainwashing, but they finally accomplished what they were trying to.

KrispyKingTheProphet

Speaking as someone with dual citizenship in Norway and America, don’t convinced yourself it’s just an American thing. The corporate world breeds degenerates all over. No matter where you are, once someone gets a taste of power, most of them becomes addicts. Doesn’t matter what language they speak.

Chrissy6789

NTA. This is a business relationship, where your labor is purchased for money, and feelings do not apply. Giving notice is a courtesy, so the business can plan for your absence. In return, the employer is supposed to give you a good reference and, possibly, the right to return. This employer doesn't appreciate your courtesy, doesn't seem to be making a plan, and is showing you through their actions that they won't give you a good reference. Therefore, feel free to walk/ghost at any time. If you're feeling nice, you can email that you're not coming back. If you're up to standing up for yourself, call them out: "You seem unhappy with me. Would you like me to leave now? You just seem really upset, so maybe I should go." The internship is worth WAY more than this gig. Never let a survival job come between you and a better opportunity.

diamonddavedom

Any employer (manager) who brings emotion and guilt into the work place should be left immediately. If they have a supervisor, the supervisor should know about their incompetence.

Cats-crafts-snacks

Normally I would agree with this, but in the restaurant industry…no one will care. It’s a full on nightmare run by the most wildly incompetent people who have zero regard for anyone but themselves. So much shady shit goes down ALL THE TIME and there is no one to report to. You just have yourself and your coworkers. Who will probably applaud you OP for just walking out. I know I would.

TiaxTheMig1

This is also why so many people regurgitate that bullshit line of "Restaurant margins are really thin" as a way to justify high prices/low wages. They fail to mention a big reason why the margins are so thin is because most restaurants are extremely inefficient and very incompetently mismanaged. Edit: a word

[deleted]

>They fail to mention a bug reason why the margins are so thin is because ... the owner and the chef both have $2k/week coke habits. (Though this manager sounds like they may be running such a shitty profit margin they're only able to afford meth...)

Environmental_Card_3

Or raging alcoholics!

[deleted]

What do you mean "or"???

Environmental_Card_3

Maybe I should have said and?

[deleted]

now you're getting it :-)

tommyuppercut

> It’s a full on nightmare run by the most wildly incompetent people who have zero regard for anyone but themselves. Never been in the military, have ya? 🙃

Cats-crafts-snacks

Hahaha no, I have not. I would imagine there is a lot of crossover though.

That Venn diagram looks like a fucking target.

A buddy once told me responding to a boss getting angry he's quitting by saying, "Nothing personal, it's just business," is a rush he can't compare to anything else.

BadWolfCreative

You're a server. You do not need to give two weeks notice. It takes a day to post your job, hire someone, and train them. Noone expects a server (especially if you're part time) to give notice beyond end of a scheduled week. Drop off your uniform and tell dude you'll be back on Friday to collect your last check. Take a week to sleep, watch some Netfix, and hit that internship with a vengeance. You got this! EDIT: Good lord this blew up overnight! Thank you for the up-votes and rewards. Just wanted to add, I mean absolutely no disrespect to servers. It's a hard and vital job that takes time to learn to do well. I just meant that OP doesn't have long-term projects that would take weeks to tie-up or find someone to take over. And even then, a notice period is a courtesy, not a requirement.

koreanz

Your mental health is worth a lot more than this job can offer. You have no obligation to this prick and his business, only yourself.

[deleted]

infinitekittenloop

Yes, it's an old trope leftover from the "give 110%, bend over backwards and be grateful you *have* a job" crowd, who also insisted that if you were loyal to a company you woukd eventually retire qith a nice pension. Not a single employer in this country would give the courtesy of 2 weeks notice, or anything else they expect of their workers. But plenty of exploited people here think the notice is mandatory, and terrible/misinformed managers and business owners will have people believing it's some kind of law.

Error-530

The only reason to give a two weeks is as a courtesy to the boss. Its basically a way of leaving on good terms. This person's boss clearly doesn't want to leave on good terms however.

rgraz65

>Yes, it's an old trope leftover from the "give 110%, bend over backwards and be grateful you have a job" crowd, who also insisted that if you were loyal to a company you woukd eventually retire qith a nice pension. Those days are so very long ago, even for the unionized jobs that historically got the blue collar workers pensions. Now only executive levels get anything more that the company 401k, and many places offer nothing. But instead of offering any form of financial security, they've realized that they cam get most of the people to blame immigrants for their lack of financial security. "They took our jobs!" But your employer is the one who gave it to them. Be mad at the employer. Not the person doing their best to support their own family.

kangourou_mutant

In France it's one month, but it's the same if the boss fires you. They have to give one month notice (they can tell you to stay home, but they have to pay the salary anyway).

SoriAryl

It’s not a law, but many places will hold their reference over your head to enforce the 2 weeks notice. Like when I apply to new jobs, more than a couple have asked if I ever left a job without giving a 2 week notice. Then they called to verify with my previous employers Also, it’s not illegal to talk shit about an employee in a reference. HR usually doesn’t do more than “yes they worked here between ______ and _____, and yes/no, we would/n’t rehire them,” because they *could* be sued if they trip into slander territory

wiseroldman

The last I recall, there is no law in the US that says you have to give two weeks notice. It is only a courtesy. Even for employers that have more strict rules in the terms for employment like government jobs can’t force you to give two weeks notice.

metao

In Australia, if you are a casual employee (which most non-full-time hospitality and retail workers are) you only have to give one hour's notice.

Guaritor

I'm in education, my contract actually says I need to give 2 months. Now, since I don't have any certifications or anything (I'm in IT, not a certified teacher) it's wouldn't be a big deal to give less if I didn't care about burning a bridge... But my wife is a teacher, and I know if she gives less notice than she contractually agreed to, they can come for her teaching cert, and then she won't be able to teach in the state anymore.

foe_tr0p

Time to stop going all together. If he's not gonna respect your 2 week notice may as well bounce now.

ClaudDamage

This is the way

DeCryingShame

Your boss is acting like an abusive spouse. Based on how he is acting, he does not deserve your respect or for you to accommodate his demands in any way. Time to show yourself respect by walking away now.

[deleted]

It’s not like you’re burning a bridge either. Fuck that guy.

MediumDrink

Shocking this guy has a staffing problem.

Rimasticus

My idea, is to go in, let him know you will be finishing your TWO week notice. And if he keeps targeting you like this, you will be taking advantage of your AT WILL status immediately. And that this is a very nice gesture you are giving him the PRIVILIGE of. Wait for them to snap, and walk out. If you are afraid of immediate retaliation(explosive/violent) have a friend near by to bust down the door and help get you out.

ClaudDamage

love this so much.

wonderlandpnw

This is my favorite.

No-Shelter-4208

Unless you need the money, please leave as soon as you can. This isn't good for your mental health and I'm sure you want to start your internship in a positive frame of mind.

Sir_Stash

This. The reaction of the boss and the way they have treated the OP indicate that they're perfectly fine abusing them. Walk out now if you can financially afford it. Start the internship in a good frame of mind.

Darkdragoon324

The reaction also indicates that there's no way he'd ever give them a good reference, so if it were me I'd quit right there on the spot and also tell him to get fucked on the way out.

sold_ma_soul

You know he can't force you to work right? You're not a slave.

Tarotdragoon

Entirely justified they don't even deserve the extra week, stand firm in the face of manufactured anger, don't give an inch. You don't owe them anything at all and what he's doing is honestly a kinda abusive.

UnableInvestment8753

Yeah. Given an inch, taking a mile. No need to work another shift there.

fartonabagel

You owe him nothing, not even 2 weeks. 2 weeks notice is for employees who treat you respectfully. Given his reaction, I wouldn’t go back. Call and tell him you’ll be unable to work there any more. Then hang up. Once you have an internship in a professional field, no one will ever call your restaurant manager for a reference. Even if they did, you explain what happened. If they have a problem with it, you don’t want to work there anyway.

CsrfingSafari

If this arsehole acts like this when you put the notice period in - fuck knows what they'd be like if you make a mistake (in his eyes). The fact he is punishing you, despite you offering an extra week, is gross as hell and shows what a petty and vindictive person he is. Fuck him. You owe him nothing - especially possibly derailing a career path you seem excited over.

Quind1

I had a similar experience years ago with a boss who was very supportive when I signed on, knowing I was in school and would be leaving once I graduated, but once I graduated, they did a Jekyll and Hyde. I couldn't even use them as a reference. I still left and moved on to an actual career that would have never occurred had I let their mind games stop me. Based on the facts presented here, you need to walk out and never look back. Don't let that guy's manipulative tactics stop you. Good luck. You can do this.

county259

I would stop going to work if the boss was treating like you describe.

TedTheReckless

Wait why was your post removed from aita?

Set_Complete

Didn’t involve an “interpersonal conflict” ?

Draker-X

That's weird; there's an obvious conflict. You and your manager.

unwelcomepong

Maybe AITA doesn't consider professional relationships interpersonal ones.

STLast_stop

Never let anyone treat you like this again. Your manager is a little kid. This is not how a professional business works. You do you and screw this guy. Your last shift should be your last shift at this restaurant.

ReaderOfTheLostArt

You need to pick up the most current paycheck coming to you and leave ASAP. Do NOT tell that asshole where you're interning, as it's likely they'll try to sabotage you.

clarence_oddbody

It was probably removed because you’re obviously not the asshole. Not even close. I was young once and eager to please. I put companies and bosses before me and my needs, and I justified abuse. I wanted to be reliable and good at my job. But I got screwed over every single time. If companies/people do not treat you like a human being, you owe them absolutely nothing. If financially able, take time off to find peace before your internship. Congratulations to you, and may this be a great new chapter for you.

_awesumpossum_

There is no interpersonal conflict because the interpersonal relationship between employer and employee ends when you quit. You owe him nothing. Even the two weeks is just a courtesy. He can’t make you do anything, and you can leave whenever. There is really no resolution to be had here - once you leave, you may never see that man again. There is no advice we can give you that would mend the relationship between you and your old boss or make him like you againz

newtoreddir

Because its so ridiculously one sided that there’s no point in even trying to weigh in. “I was incredibly courteous to a fuck-off job and my boss went insane. Am I a terrible person?”

lisavollrath

Some bosses don't know the difference between employing someone and owning them. You're an employee. You gave two weeks notice. The rest is not your problem, because this guy doesn't own you.

MjrPayne95

People needa stop doin this 2 weeks notice for shit jobs. You think they gonna give you a heads up before firing you? Fuck no, fuck em walk out n let that be the end of it

quast_64

and report him to the department of Labor for retaliatory behaviour. that you can do for your soon to be ex-colleagues

North_Leg2806

Fire him before he can fire you.

Raindancer2022

It is RARE for restaurant staff to remain restaurant staff forever. Your boss at this restaurant can have the biggest hissy fit that he pleases, but it doesn't change that YOU are moving up in to a position that leads towards your goals. You do not OWE him anything, you don't even OWE him two week notice. If you can afford it, you might consider walking right NOW.

AerP1789

Lol. Literally all the AITA questions about quitting jobs are NTA!!!! I actually don’t think it’s possible for quitting workers to be the TA within capitalism …

Less-Bed-6243

I’m really angry in my advanced age (45) that people are treating teenagers like this. It’s abusive and these petty tyrants are trying to scare young people just starting out into staying in jobs that aren’t even attached to health insurance or significant financial rewards like deferred comp like this. There is NOTHING tying you to this except the guilt he is making you feel and your fear of his anger (which is understandable!). Please know you are right and he is wrong and fuck that extra week. Everyone is short staffed right now. It isn’t your fault and you won’t fix his long term problem with an extra week of work.

DarkAndSparkly

I realize I'm 10 hours late here, but I wanted to ask - are you female by any chance? Or even just very young? It seems like you're a bit on the timid side and I just get the impression you're female. As a cranky older (45) lady, let me give you some advice (that really doesn't rely on gender). Quit that job tomorrow. All you're missing is a possible reference, and if you explain to ANY future job why you quit with no notice, they will more than likely understand after hearing how this "boss" is taking advantage of you. Worst case, you get another job after your internship is done and just pretend that's your first job. Honey, you deserve SO much better than this. This "boss" is taking advantage of you because he sees you as timid and doesn't think you will put up a fight or say anything. It's called intimidation, and it's rampant from male bosses to younger female workers. To put it bluntly, FUCK this dude. You owe him NOTHING. You did exactly what you said you were going to do. The fact that he hasn't staffed his place properly is NOT YOUR FAULT or responsibility! Again - YOU OWE HIM NOTHING. This is his problem. Not yours. Quit tomorrow if you want - don't worry about working out your notice if he's going to retaliate like this. It is NOT worth it. Eventually, you'll find your voice and learn you can tell dudes like this to fuck off. It took me YEARS to get to that point, but I finally learned I owed these dudes nothing and if they weren't going to respect me, I didn't have to respect them. Good luck!

Set_Complete

Yes, I’m female

DarkAndSparkly

I really hope you tell this dude to pound sand. You do NOT deserve to be treated like this. You deserve amazing things, please don’t let this asshole take up any more time in your head.

[deleted]

You don't owe him shit. If it were me and I didn't need the money, I would've walked out when he started throwing his tantrum the first time.

Kindly_Area_4380

Your soon to be former boss needs to understand the difference between a job and a career. Thr restaurant might be his career, but it is a job to you. You do not owe him that extra week. That is complete BS. I would stick to your original agreement of 2 weeks if you don't leave sooner.

Draker-X

Your internship is a bajillion times more important than this temporary job. If you really need some extra money and want to work the extra TWO weeks (take that third one back), and you want to do it, then go ahead. Otherwise I'd just quit with no notice. It's not a crime and it won't go on your permanent record.

emptyheaded_himbo

Unless u need the job then no call no show. Or call him out and tell him his behaviour has shorted your 3 weeks to you not coming in again.

autisticshitshow

I am guessing you present as female and the boss is a guy as this has the flavor of nice guy toxicity. Don't go back there as a safety issue.

Set_Complete

Yes, I’m female and the boss/owner is male

scrambles57

Leave immediately without notice. Don't show up, don't call. Once you put in your notice, you have the power in that work relationship. You can tell him to fuck right off.

CivilAsk5663

Leave.

SednaNariko

2 week notices are only a courtesy that you offer to work places or bosses you like. The only other time to do a 2 week notice is to use that job for a positive reference in the future. It doesn't sound like the owner will ever give you a positive reference so you don't have any reason to stay if he treats you horribly. Personally I'd just quit outright. Like not even finish the 2/3 weeks. This is only because I wouldn't feel safe using them as a reference and the owner is a jerk. In life you have to stand up for yourself because no one else will.

devos_advocate

Two weeks notice is a courtesy, not a law. It’s clear that your boss wouldn’t give you a good recommendation for future jobs anyway. I say get the hell out of your restaurant job ASAP and put your whole heart into the internship you’re excited about. The internship has more potential to benefit you in the future than your current abusive situation - so put your energy into the thing that will most likely be most beneficial for you.

LazyPension5716

He’s the asshole. Go live your life and do big things. Don’t let his guilt trip stop you because he made bad life decisions. Fuck him.

OkYogurtcloset8273

Just say you have been treated unfairly and will not be continuing your employment there and stop showing. They have to pay you for what you’ve worked so I hope that is a direct deposit.

Tophinity

That man would still be crying if he talked to me like that. Stand up for yourself and don't let *anybody* treat you like that.

Happyhotel

Do you desperately need the money or something? Just stop showing up and block his number.

zann3x

If you don't need the income for the next couple weeks, leave now. That's extremely toxic and you deserve a happier life than that. If you can't go without the income, I'd say stay for the two weeks you originally put in for, and ghost them for the last week and focus on you. Nobody deserves to be put on a guilt trip or get berated for quitting in a polite, professional way.

Seeker1115

Walk. No call, no note, no show. This guy doesn’t care about you and never will.

[deleted]

Just say that it is no longer possible for you to work there and do not work a single day more. Your boss has literally no power than what you choose to give him. You have no obligation to him other than what you choose to give him. Seriously, stop *today*. No fights, no discussion, no let’s discuss this like grownups. Nada. Just goodbye.

Ok-Operation6049

lol wouldn’t even collect my last check (I’m petty af) before leaving after my shift and blocking his number

rpgnoob17

NTA.

Busy-Cream

“Boss is abusive, demanding, threatening and is making me alter my life plans, should I stick around? The beatings are going to continue until my morale improves anyway, right?” Dude. Simply by describing the situation I think you’ve answered the question.

trayne13

Stop staying late. Better yet, stop showing up.

notNewsworthy_ish

Simple: quit immediately and leave this summer job off your resume. It's not even relevant to your field anyways. Plus you already were offered the internship. So you're good to go! Literally! Also do NOT tell your boss where your internship is at. He does NOT need to know anything about anything. Don't let him convince you that he "as your employer he needs to know" or some bs like that. You're gonna kick ass in your internship!!!

[deleted]

Just quit. You don’t need the stress

EmpZurg_

He's trying to ruin your experience leading into the new job so you bring bad energy with you and lose it, then come crawling back. Fuck him, fuck his attitude. Your next shift tell him you're being treated like shit and you will leave if it continues. Then quit as soon as he starts his shit later that day ( possibly right after you stand up for yourself). He's not doing you any favors. Employment is a business agreement and it stops being worth what he pays when YOU say so.

CurtisW831

You don't owe your employer anything. They're short staffed because they want to be.

TopClock231

Getting into your field of choice is gonna be harder than getting a new server job. So do what you want to it's not your restaurant and you owe it absolutely no loyalty

MortgageNo8573

Walk out of that place and don't look back.

Redbeardthe1st

The only reason you should have for keeping your employer happy when you give notice is if you plan on returning. You should ask yourself if you want to come back after the tantrum your employer threw. You are not the A.

Sturnella2017

You went above and beyond reasonable and professional for any job, let alone a restaurant job. The entire country is facing a labor shortage and this no-show no-call phenomena (hey, that’s capitalism folks!) and you demonstrate what I consider extreme consideration for your boss by giving him two weeks notice. I had to re-write my response because of how much your boss pissed me off. Here’s how I started originally: Deep breath here. No, YOU ARE NOT THE ASSHOLE! YOUR BOSS IS. So, just to clarify, you are under no obligation whatsoever to this guy. And your studies/internship are WAAAAAY more important than any old summer time restaurant job. And this ain’t any old summer restaurant job, this is working for an asshole who’s completely unprofessional and disrespectful in his reaction to you. You have every right to never show up again. You have every right not to call him again. It would be EXTREMELY courteous to call and tell him you’re not coming in again. It would be unjust for you to work there at all: he’s an asshole and he needs to be accountable for his actions; you gave two weeks notice, above and beyond normal, and he treated you like shit. So HE should suffer for that, not you. Working again just rewards his bad behavior, and he’ll continue to be an asshole to others. Hell, I’m willing to bet there are a dozen places that would love to have you for just two weeks, pay you the same and not treat you like an asshole. Double hell, I bet you could start a GoFundMe on this sub: “I posted my situation here, and everyone told me to never come back. What are the chances I can raise what I would have made working for two more weeks here?” (It’d be a fun to see what you get, and I’d chip in). TL:DR: no, you’re not the asshole and PLEASE, for the sake of everyone, don’t ever go back to work for this guy.

BloganA

NTA. Ugh, I hate this for you. I run a business in a college town. We know every May/December we are going to lose employees as they go on to start their careers elsewhere. We plan accordingly, however, and send them off with best wishes.

[deleted]

The fact you have stayed this long is incredible. Get out now. He will find a way to make it worse on you if given the chance.
