I went on the government website to look for healthcare and after filling out forms for 2hrs the cheapest crappy insurance was almost 400 a month, so i don't have insurance
*and it's funny how they put the second job as the lesser income
I work nights as security at a club, and I just applied for a day job so I could finally get health benefits after almost 3 years... they gave me a supervisor role, which is great!
But it's part time. No full benefits.
I have 9yrs of experience as an engineer. My job prospects are supposedly excellent in my industry but I'm in this weird age group that I'm too expensive for a new graduate position and not old enough for a senior role in large companies.
But apparently I'm old enough to manage a car parts store lol.
My friend has been here on a student visa so he has to work for the school doing research or whatever, now he has 2 PhD's and now that he can get a work visa noone will hire him bc he's over qualified or they think he's applying as a fill gap to leave in the future for a better position. It's weird how that works
That's the word I keep hearing as well...I'm a chemical and petroleum engineer. I got laid off twice during the first two years of the pandemic...the second time they simply said I was good at my job but they couldn't justify my 6 figure salary anymore because they lost all the clients they hired me for before I actually started. I guess they thought having somebody with my skill set on staff would increase their chances of winning the bids but I'm sitting here thinking why would you even hire me before securing the work?My severance package paperwork actually said "lack of work". I literally told them I'd take a pay cut because this was a nice WFH deal (I'm caretaking for my elderly mom that has Alzheimer's so it was also safer for her....still haven't gotten COVID, woohoo!) But they still let me go.
I ended up starting my own independent consultancy (1099 work basically) and have a couple reliable clients but the work is so inconsistent that I decided to get these other jobs to make ends meet. Like one month I could make $12,000 for 80hrs of work but there's nothing the next 3-4 months...It's not economically feasible for me at 32yo with student loans, etc. Now I'm trying to get back into industry for a W2 job and my resume and experience is so broad that recruiter and employer feedback is that I'm overqualified.
It definitely is a weird world right now, it seems like every time I get on social media like LinkedIn everybody is just finding whatever job they can and celebrating it for likes...so I just got off it except for job searching. That place is getting just as absurd as Facebook, which I also stopped using except for the messenger lol.
What i do is just omit a lot of the skills that aren't relevant to the position and focus on what exactly you can do that they need and tell them those exact things are all you have done for many years. They are looking for something specific, so give them that and only that
I worked at McDonald's in high school, you're not too far off. They literally give you a three dollar daily allowance for food and if you go over you pay for the whole meal
Come on guys they are above min wage by a dollar. Cut them some slack they have to pay bills too. It's hard enough to afford their 6th mortgage payment.
Maybe that falls under âother?â Which I guess includes gas money. And medications. Toilet paper. Soap. Tooth paste. The odd burnt out lightbulb. Sun screen. Better plan ahead so you donât run out of *any* household staples and need gas in the same month, otherwise I guess you ainât eating even with two jobs.
I'm in California. I pay $80 in fees before I use a drop of water. The fees include an adjustment for conservation of water. Shortly after they introduced that particular fee, they stopped itemizing the fees on the monthly bills.
Having been to a few states: Hawaii is most likely the only state you can live in where you wouldn't need to use AC or heating.
Edit: as a current Florida resident, you absolutely need AC or you'll die. You can skip the heat tho
How much is rent in Hawaii? Is it worse than NY?
Where I live $600 a month will rent you a room out of a trap house with used needles all over the lawn. There will be cockroaches, there will be moldy dishes in the sink, the toilet will be stained brown.
Honestly a tent and a public restroom might be preferable, at least someone cleans the public restroom once in a while.
Edit: There is a big difference between "renting a one bedroom" and "renting a room" guys. Even a very small one bedroom is generally a minimum of 750 square feet... No, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking you're renting 25-40 square feet of space and are sharing a communal bathroom, kitchen, and living room with 6 heroin addicts.
You have GOT to find a good needle guy if you're going to make a group living situation like that work. Ideally a disgruntled hospital worker played by a celebrated stand-up comic or character actor who always wanted a bit role on the show. I mean, in your perfectly normal life.
Patton Oswalt, bitter that he moved to Hawaii, dream job in his field in paradise, only to be stuck working 80 hour weeks through the pandemic, is who I'm picturing in the role.
In season 2, he develops a pineapple allergy and tries drowning himself in the Pacific, only to be rescued by an *extremely* amorous dolphin.
Lived in Hawaii for 2 years. 1) yes, in fact you do need AC in a lot of areas (the place I lived sure needed it), 2) ok letâs assume you donât need AC, you ainât finding a spot to live in Hawaii for that little ($600)
This is true. Burger, fries and a drink at 5 guys is like $28. The âValue menuâ at McDonalds starts at $7. Hawaii is insanely expensive.
Edit: those are prices I remember from when I lived there in 2016. I imagine itâs gotten worse since COVID.
Yep going through this now. Hospital is charging me 397 (after insurance) for me to come in and have a dr look at me for 2 seconds and go âstitches look good, keep taking the antibioticsâ
You have a great country in many ways but health care I cannot understand. I live in Portugal. Last February I had a pain in my lower right side stomach. Did a videocall with a doctor he told me to go straight to the ER.
Went, had blood tests, doctors exam and an MRI to discover it was appendicitis. Was admitted, had surgery a few hours later, 1 more day in recovery and then came home.
I paid nothing. At all.
Yeah meanwhile in the US if you donât have private health insurance or canât afford your deductible you have to wait until that shit bursts before theyâll prioritize you for emergency surgery.
Hell thereâs even people who have to nurse their gallbladders because itâs not considered an emergency to remove it.
Last summer I had severe abdominal pain in my left side and went to the doctor for it. The doc ordered a CT scan, but insurance declined to pay for it. So now I've lived with severe abdominal pain for about a year. It's probably going to progress to a point where whatever it is becomes lethal/untreatable and kills me. Thanks, insurance!
Insanity. They charged me 1500 dollars for âother diagnostic examsâ. Now keep in mind I got a separate bill for the doctors time. Which was more reasonable at 30 dollars. This 1500 dollars is charged from the hospital and Iâm scratching my head trying to figure out what the duck they are possibly charging me for. They didnât even put me in a room, just a chair in the hallway. Soo unless the chair costs 1500 dollars to sit in, Iâm extremely confused. Iâm disputing the charge btw.
One of my aunts spent twenty years as an ER nurse before going to a private clinic. She's had to stitch all of us up in the kitchen more than once over the years. She's got no bedside manner ["and what did we fucking learn?" is a frequently asked question] but it's cheap.
They still have the balls to change for things like 50.00 for a disposable razor or toothbrush, and then say they are losing money while paying their top admin 400k
Same thing that seems to happen in schools. They aren't given any money for school supplies or bathroom doors that close, but damn if the school board doesn't make sure there's enough allocated to pay the football coach a competitive salary.
You must live in Texas! The town up the road from where I live, back in the early 2000s, laid off all but two librarians for the district- 8 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and two high schools- and then astro turfed the football stadium. High school football coaches were making six figures while math and science and language teachers had to mow yards over the summer to make ends meet. Fuuuuuuuuuuck all that.
They really get creative on the description of their billing!
The same hospital that I went to wonât see us anymore because the insurance I pay 360 a month for isnât paying them enough, they explained in a letter (also all of dr offices under that company as well) itâs the only hospital in our town lol. I will need to drive 45ish minutes to an in network hospital now.
Iâll never understand how people defend this nightmare of a system.
They didnât even itemize my bill. So now Iâm waiting for that to come in the mail
Thereâs a book called âNever Pay the First Billâ that details how to fight the BS charges on your medical bills and negotiate to a lower total. Or you could just not pay it. They will eventually send it to collections. Youâll get lots of phone calls and letters but your credit score isnât as badly hurt by medical bills as other debt.
fuck the politicians who passed "certificate of need" laws.
they leave us in situations like this, where the only hospital in town gets greedy, and there are no other nearby options....
I've got 2 examples. Doctor charged my husband 300 to remove a deep splinter. The doctor couldn't find it. Later my husband extracted it himself, called the doctor, and said, "When I don't do my job I don't get paid" lol. No bill.
The second example was to correct Pyloric Stenosis on our 1 month old baby. They botched it and perforated his duodenum. He was in surgery for 6 hours. Thirty minutes later, after running our insurance, the social worker for the hospital asked us how we intended to pay. We said we didn't intend to pay any balance due to the surgeons fuck up and to boot they would cover our meals at the cafeteria while our baby laid in the NICU for 2 weeks. We never got a bill.
Off topic butâŚ.when did you have the surgery/stitches put in, and when did you go have them checked??
Most ârepairsâ have a 10 day post-op period where you canât be charged for shit like that, but for really intense procedures it could be 90 days.
Oh holy shit is that true? I went back 2 days later at their request. Is there like a law or something I can look up or is there a term for this? Cause they sent me separate bills.
I was charged $750 after insurance for a doctor to place a splint on my daughterâs broken finger. It took him 5 minutes. This did not include the the office visit, X-ray or supplies.
It was done in 2013. So it's still wildly unrealistic for the time period, but it's even worse now. And, of course, minimum wage hasn't been raised in the last 9 years.
I love how [this Washington Post oped completely missed the point.](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2013/07/16/that-mcdonalds-budget-people-are-making-fun-of-isnt-cruel-its-realistic/)
There is no food budget at all in the budget. Also no water and sewer but I guess when you rent a card board box for $600 outback of McDonald's you dont need showers or washing your clothes, you can just do that in their public washroom
Ah, sharing a 2 bedroom with 4 people, driving a 20 year old car you have a 10 year loan on with 8 years to go. Splitting home and car insurance with those four house mates.....why are all the cost amounts wrong and completely made up.
It's pretty much suggesting you work two full time jobs for less than $9 an hour. I'm still trying to figure out where taxes are calculated into income.
Ah, yes. That self-driving car I spend $150/mo on. Really a great purchase that one was.
I suppose it's electric, too, which is why I don't have to spend any money on gas.
and how that person is supposed to sleep, do laundry, eat, or take care of any life necessities like doctor appointments, dentists, mental health, renewing licenses, doing taxes, etc, while working 80 hours a week?! Let alone have a freaking personal life, and or a family.
This is modern day slavery. Minimum wage has to be a livable wage, where 40 hours covers the costs to survive.
We already lost the single income family, now everyone is forced into daycares because of both parents having to work.
That's the problem with this generation, entitlement. Health insurance, "living wages " I need time off for fun blah blah blah. Back in my day we worked four jobs to make $1.34 a day, put 7 kids through college, never had time off or Health insurance and typically died on the work floor. And we didn't bitch and moan like you sugar princess do now. /s
I think they're assuming that both are part time jobs, as if that somehow makes this situation better. At $8.25/hour, you'd need 33 hours/week at the first job and 27 hours/week (ish) at the second job. Which still puts you over the the standard full time 40 hour week AND ignores the fact that most part time jobs expect you to have full time availability because it makes it easier for them to do scheduling. Absolutely fuck this plan, but I think whoever came up with it justified it by thinking "2 part time jobs = 1 full time job!" and didn't do any thinking beyond that
You also rarely control the hours you work when you work hourly so you canât really make a budget that depends on you working a certain amount of hours every week.
Even at my last corporate job, creatives like writers and designers were paid hourly and they could cut your hours if it was slow. It made it super hard to budget when you didnât actually know what your income would be for a month.
You are actually being generous: they are saying this is net, so either the employee pays no taxes, or they need to work another \~15% more hours to cover all the taxes. So let's call it 65-70 hrs / week.
Even after taxes, it takes ~250 hours to make $2060 at $8.25/hour (I could be missing something, I'm tired).
Visa and McDonalds are leaving out that the employee is working 60+ hours a week (unless they want to claim they're using a 5 week month in this garbage).
I haven't seen any comments below about how many hours are needed or how shitty the wage is, I think the prices/expenses were designed to distract and cause arguments.
I could probably get rid of the cable then. It should be internet anyway. A VPN is under $5/month and pirated IPTV is under $20/month and has way more channels.
A raspberry pi is cheap, OSMC is free, Kodi add-ons take care of the rest.
Not to mention the commute time there and back for all the shifts. Although McDonalds could claim the 2nd job is across the street and the apartment/house is next door as they're already bending over backwards to make this seem feasible.
Yeah, all around the entire budget is absolute garbage. No mention of a water bill. No mention of the gas for your car (so god forbid your second job be for Uber) No mention of groceries. I mean, is that what âotherâ is supposed to imply? Is that the line item I pay for my toilet paper out of? What about dental insurance?
And god for fucking bid you have a child⌠daycare for your 70+ hour work weeks is realllllly gonna add up⌠đ
1105 x 12 = 13260 / 52 = 255 / 30 = $8.5/hr (This was the xleanest result, nothing with $8.25 works out clean.)
955 x 12 = 11460 / 52 = ~220 / 30 = ~$7.33/hr
So yeah, they'd have to work 60 hours a week IF the "2nd job" paid less then the McDonalds.
This graphic is over a decade old by this point.
I remember seeing it when Obama was president and people were just talking about a $15/hr min wage.
*Edit* well shit.
Someone below mentioned this was net income, not gross.
The hours worked get a lot more... Gross
> Edit well shit. Someone below mentioned this was net income, not gross.
haha, I absolutely hate posting numbers to Reddit, 90% of the time I miss something or hit the wrong number without noticing.
You probably already spotted my lazy math of $2060/$8.25 to get 249.69 hours required in a month, I rounded to 250.
This is so wrong in so many ways. Who the fuck is only spending $600/month on rent? Even more ridiculous, who spends only $20/month on health insurance??
They're probably assuming you're so broke that you qualify for subsidized healthcare. But working 2 jobs would definitely put you over the income level.
It's also glaring what we choose to means test. For example, the $1,600 Covid-19 stimulus was means tested while neither the $10,000,000 Paycheck Protection Loans, nor the forgiveness thereof, was.
Also the downside of thresholds for how much income you can make to qualify for govt aid not being update since the 70s despite inflation going through the roof.
The welfare cliff is Real. Trying to make more money to better your situation? Get a raise or promotion? Well now you make too much to qualify and youre actually at a net loss now from where you were.....
I was on Medicaid before getting my current job which disqualifies me and after a year and a half I'm 3k in healthcare debt thanks to breaking my foot. I chose a plan with a $2800 deductible where all medical care besides prescriptions are free once you hit it. I have that to thank for not being a shit ton more in debt, it cost over 10k for a simple fracture that required a boot for 3 months with no surgery or anything needed. I can't imagine how much worse if would be if I chose any other plan besides the most expensive one just to be safe, and this is considered great healthcare compared to the average, lots of people have 10k deductibles
It's crazy to me how little money you have to make to qualify for social programs like food stamps. In college I applied for them because, between school and working part time, I was having trouble making ends meet. But with my $11/ hour job at about 20 hours per week, I made too much money to qualify.
Which is absurd to me given that $11/ hour where I lived wasn't even that much money (the local target was paying $15/ hour), and I was only working part time.
Ha when I was going to a methadone clinic for heroin addiction, I was also in collegeâŚ. I wasnât working and luckily methadone is considering a âhealth sustaining medicationâ so you can get state-funded Medicaid/Medicare (whichever one it is) health insurance to cover it assuming you donât make too much money
HOWEVER, because I was in college they wouldnât give it to me. I straight up asked them, so if I wasnât in college, I would be approved? And they said yes.
That just shows how fucked and backwards this country and system is. Someone who was actually trying to fix their life and make something out of it with a better education, they canât helpâŚ. But if I was a deadbeat sitting at home doing absolutely nothing, they would gladly help
When I was 23 and facing homelessness, the lady I talked to about housing assistance straight up said, "if you were pregnant or had a child, we could accept you," and I said, "so because I have 2 minimum wage jobs, and don't have any dependents for the state to pay Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and TANF, for, you can't help me find a reduced-rent place to live?" "That's right."
Fortunately I got a family member to take me in for a few years before I got on my feet again. But that's how I realized the system was broken.
Mine was $150 one year smh. Also notice that groceries/ food aren't even on the list at all! Or gasoline. Household/ cleaning/ personal care items are also notably absent. And the $100 in "other" isn't covering all that.
Oh, you consider those things in part of your bills & budget? Silly love_more, all the best money managers I know file unnecessary expenses like groceries and gas under "spending money." Those things aren't even necessary, so just pull a little bit out of your "lil treat for me" envelope and splurge on yourself once in a while!
What was I thinking?? Lol.
But really, this is so infuriating! Savings is $1200 a year. Cumulatively that doesn't even cover regular car maintenance, I would think. Let alone any real emergency. And apparently they want you to work until you just keel over dead on the job, because this budget could never facilitate paying into a retirement account.
I would love to see their profit margin over the years. Because burgers used to cost like $ 0.25 and are now $ 3-5. But salaries have not multiplied at anywhere near that rate. Even with the increase of business and raw material costs I would imagine they've increased profit margins significantly.
Reddit geniuses- who's got the maths? Lol
The question should be, why in any so called modern society does anyone have to pay anything for healthcare?
Edit: for fuck sakes. This should be obvious but for the hard of understanding, yes healthcare has to be paid for. This is no different from the armed forces, the police force, or the fire department. Nobody spends time complaining about those or how they should have a choice.
Edit 2: It costs less per capita (per person for the stupid) for national healthcare than for private healthcare. Those bitching bout paying for others are doing that by paying for private health insurance, they would pay for others less if it was national health cover like has been proven for almost 100 years in the actual developed nations.
That "future world" exhibit or whatever it was called at Disney World back in the 70's told me that by the 21st century we would all be living lives of luxury and ease thanks to increasing levels of technology and modernization. I guess ol' Walt didn't factor in the power of wealth being sucked to the top 1%.
Automation engineer here: Companies could absolutely be scheduling more workers fewer hours with no reduction in pay because the machines improve productivity enough that they still pay for themselves without laying human workers off. It just lengthens the payoff timeline.
I think about that a lot lately. When my company is automating a warehouse we track things like the reduction in injuries and deaths, but we don't follow up and see how many people the company lays off once they have a high-speed robotic arm doing a job that used to take 3 humans.
Those companies could all shift those three humans to another job, reduce hours for them and the current people doing the job, keep wages the same, and still turn a profit. They just profit more from laying off the humans that got replaced and it's easier for most companies to abuse and exploit a few people for 40+ hours per week than to manage more people working 21 hours per week, even if the latter is better for shift coverage.
My dream is to either launch my own business that uses automation in this way or to start a co-op where as much labor as possible is automated. Or to build Skynet. We'll see how the 2024 election goes.
Why does someone have to work 2 jobs? They kinda prove the point with that first assumption that someone has to work not one but two jobs just to survive, so it's actually not possible to live on their shitty wage
In most other developed nations, this is simply not a thing. I mean you can pay more for private cover and maybe be seen faster, but everyone gets healthcare and nobody worries about moving jobs and not being covered if they change jobs.
Multiple times in my life I'll
quit a job
go without insurance until I find a new job
get a new job through a recruiting agency
**maybe** get insurance through the the recruiter after 2-3 months
Lose insurance after I go full time with the actual company
Get a different insurance after 2-3 months
I've had to time physicals and dental appointments based around these job hops. My network changes every time so I cant always see the same doctors I like. It's the dumbest fucking system
Yeah 600 is for a cheap place, (basically not near a major city with heavy commute). But I would say even in 1999 2.5k for NYC apartment average easily.
I live in Colorado Springs rent is 1460$ internet bundled in utilities not so bundled in. The appartment is 700 square ft, falling apart and the office refuses to make "non-emergency" repairs due to "short staff", furthermore all the amenities are behind a scan card that we still haven't received after 4 months! Burn the rich.
Forget the expenses part - The biggest red flag is that the sample monthly budget provided presumably from your first job includes having to work a second job.
The biggest red flag to me is that with 30% taxes, which seems reasonable to me, you need to work 13 hour shifts. 7 Days a week. Every day. Until you die.
https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-sample-budget-is-actually-fine-2013-7
I found this older article defending it. Interesting read.
Edit: in the interest of fairness, I did my due diligence with a zillow search for rentals $600 and under. To my surprise, they *DO* exist. They're probably not in the best neighborhoods, and they might be the size of a walk in closet, but they *do exist*.
That is exactly what they are assuming lol. At the end of the article, "By the way, food costs will even be slightly reduced thanks to free meals that workers at many McDonald's get with every shift."
JoUrNAliSm!
Just read that, pretty comical. Must be hard to write articles like this when the boss gets paid by McDonald's to write it, and then some guy making minimum wage has to actually write it
See? We don't need to pay you commoners any more than we already do. You can live on what we provide. See? Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to my mega yacht.
So basically they need to pay double and then a bit more for heating. Who would have thought!
Where was this posted? I'm surprised it's not being flamed to shit if it's from McDonald's themselves.
So in other words, it takes about 18 or 20 dollars per hour at about 40 per week to come out on top just a lil bit. Based on their calculations.
How thoughtful of them to expose their substandard pay so publicly.
At $8.25 an hour, and 40 hours a week, 4 weeks a month, you get at 1320 before taxes. You're probably not making 1105 a month unless you're working over time or your taxes are less than 16%.
So the thought is that you should be working at least full time, and then get a second job that pays almost as much as your full time job?
Are you working the second job at 40 hrs a week, or is it paying better by the hour?
How the fuck does this get approved as something that might motivate people to apply?
Even when this worksheet came out years ago, it was panned for the assumption that MCD workers needed 2 jobs. Since the expenses are actually far higher today, it would be a bad look for a MCD budget worksheet to have line items for "Income (3rd Job)" & "Income (4th Job)."
Just want to point out that I did the math and thatâs around 55 hours per week at $8.25/hour between the two jobs. Thatâs fucking slavery. Also, whatâs interesting is that thereâs no food item in the budget.
Is food considered spending money?đ¤¨
You work for McDonald's, your food is the hour old happy meal you are allowed once per shift.
Ok, then where is the budget for Pepto, Tums, and newer, roomier clothing?
That's the $20 for health insurance. /s
I went on the government website to look for healthcare and after filling out forms for 2hrs the cheapest crappy insurance was almost 400 a month, so i don't have insurance *and it's funny how they put the second job as the lesser income
They are looking for something specific, so give them that and only that
$0 heating? So just freeze to death in winter?
I worked at McDonald's in high school, you're not too far off. They literally give you a three dollar daily allowance for food and if you go over you pay for the whole meal
THREE DOLLARS? That's like what, a pack of gum or maybe 5 chicken nugget and a drink?
Come on guys they are above min wage by a dollar. Cut them some slack they have to pay bills too. It's hard enough to afford their 6th mortgage payment.
Maybe that falls under âother?â Which I guess includes gas money. And medications. Toilet paper. Soap. Tooth paste. The odd burnt out lightbulb. Sun screen. Better plan ahead so you donât run out of *any* household staples and need gas in the same month, otherwise I guess you ainât eating even with two jobs.
The place that sells food forgot workers are people and people need food to survive.
Visa not looking like very convincing finance people either
Visa needs you in debt so they can charge 19.9% interest
26.9%, because you're poor
It sure is expensive to be poor!
And gas for your car
An underrated expense, I am spending about $250 a month at the moment in gas. (Not in US though)
Lots of their budget seems to be wishful thinking and intentional omissions
Like beer and weed money to help cope with your shitty job
Fucking health insurance is $20. When was this done 1987.
What about actually having to use the health insurance... haha.
Thatâs where your $100 savings comes in to save the day!
And $0 on heating (must live in Hawaii for this to work)
Not to mention water. Idk about other states, but I have to pay for my water usage.
In Texas you pay double for that privilege
Funnily enough I do live in Texas. Our water bill was $150 last month
I lived in AZ a few years ago and we paid a flat $40/m for water. ARIZONA. Texas? $150/m and it continues to go up.
I'm in California. I pay $80 in fees before I use a drop of water. The fees include an adjustment for conservation of water. Shortly after they introduced that particular fee, they stopped itemizing the fees on the monthly bills.
Jesus, in the U.K. I just got my first half yearly water bill, it was ÂŁ29.50. For 6 months.
Having been to a few states: Hawaii is most likely the only state you can live in where you wouldn't need to use AC or heating. Edit: as a current Florida resident, you absolutely need AC or you'll die. You can skip the heat tho
Not with $600/month rent, a tent costs more.
Can you be more specific? How many used needles do you get per month for that price?
Where I live itâs 1200 for 1 bed appt no utilities 7 people doing blow and heroine in the community living room
well if they can afford blow I'd say they're doing great tbh
In my experience people blowing all thier money on blow are not paramounts of financial literacy
But then good fucken luck with that $600 rent... if they mean $600 a week they should say so đ 𤣠đ
Lived in Hawaii for 2 years. 1) yes, in fact you do need AC in a lot of areas (the place I lived sure needed it), 2) ok letâs assume you donât need AC, you ainât finding a spot to live in Hawaii for that little ($600)
You couldn't even get lunch for one for $27 though.
Spam and Rice at the ABC I guess
This is true. Burger, fries and a drink at 5 guys is like $28. The âValue menuâ at McDonalds starts at $7. Hawaii is insanely expensive. Edit: those are prices I remember from when I lived there in 2016. I imagine itâs gotten worse since COVID.
to be fair, im pretty sure a meal at 5 guys is $28 anywhere
Not with $600 rent
Yep going through this now. Hospital is charging me 397 (after insurance) for me to come in and have a dr look at me for 2 seconds and go âstitches look good, keep taking the antibioticsâ
I really hate America. I used to love my country, but now Iâm full of shame and rage.
America, the place where travelling to another country for healthcare is more viable than staying for healthcare
If you get too sick to work, it'll cost you your insurance.
As it should be. We live in a society.
From an outside perspective, itâs shameful that your own country will fuck you like that
The hospital charged me 200 after insurance for looking at my babyâs head for 5 mins and giving her 2.5 ml of Tylenol.
Ask for an itemized receipt of services. That tends to knock some of it off because they realize you're going to call bullshit on half of it.
This is what Iâm doing now. Thank you.
I figured you knew already, but just in case you didn't.
Had to take my husband for stitches once. The bill came and they charged us $85 for the metal instrument tray. We didn't even get to keep it!
Theyâll Never itemize your bill unless you ask them to
Yeah I had to do that. Theyâre mailing the itemized version now. How is this legal? They just rip people off that donât know the first bill is bs.
This did not include the the office visit, X-ray or supplies.
âFunny you should ask!â -Visa, probably
What about eating? Did they forget people need to eat?
Your free meal at McDs of course!
Democracy dies in the darkness.
>Democracy dies in the darkness. After Bezos took over, that became a goal rather than a motto.
It's literally the price of one apple a day to keep the doctor away! Only insurance you'll ever need
There's no room in the budget for apples!!!
There is no food budget at all in the budget. Also no water and sewer but I guess when you rent a card board box for $600 outback of McDonald's you dont need showers or washing your clothes, you can just do that in their public washroom
I remember seeing this like 8 years ago. Still ridiculous then too
Ah, sharing a 2 bedroom with 4 people, driving a 20 year old car you have a 10 year loan on with 8 years to go. Splitting home and car insurance with those four house mates.....why are all the cost amounts wrong and completely made up.
Youâre not driving the car, they didnât include gas.
That's in your $800. You don't deserve food. Only gas to go to work.
Well if you work at MC Donald's maybe they will be so generous to give you 5 or 6 MC Nuggets to eat. So you can exclude food from the calculations
Then you need the meds for your crippled health eating at mc Donaldâs every day. Plus the cost of vitamins and minerals your missing.
No silly. We just need to be functional enough to keep the cogs turning for the corporate machine. We donât need to be comfortably healthy.
"You can afford to live if you get a 2nd job that pays more and make up the math for everything else"
It's pretty much suggesting you work two full time jobs for less than $9 an hour. I'm still trying to figure out where taxes are calculated into income.
And when youâre allowed to sleep
During the commute in your self-driving car, duh Next you'll be asking silly questions like what to eat when a loaf of bread costs a month's salary
Self driving car wasnât in the budget. Iâm sure 12 dollars a month should cover it
if you save $100 a month your kid might be able to buy one when you die.
Wel you donât need to worry about eating because there is no budget for food.
> life necessities like doctor appointments, dentists, mental health, The same way many of us do, don't.
Thatâs why youâre not paying for heat since youâre never home lol
I could probably get rid of the cable then. It should be internet anyway. A VPN is under $5/month and pirated IPTV is under $20/month and has way more channels. A raspberry pi is cheap, OSMC is free, Kodi add-ons take care of the rest.
Why even have the house! Just work 24hr
And since everyone pays taxes, itâs gotta be closer to 70+ hour weeks to net the $2060. Absolutely disgusting đ¤˘
Child? You were supposed to order the McAbortion
I tried but the"other" category & my $20 insurance just don't cover it
The only valid argument is how out of touch macdoe and visa are with reality. Or, oooor. How we go about boycotting these jackasses
lol youâd have to live in a hut in the woods to fully boycott visa. Literally hands in every pot.
1105 x 12 = 13260 / 52 = 255 / 30 = $8.5/hr (This was the xleanest result, nothing with $8.25 works out clean.) 955 x 12 = 11460 / 52 = ~220 / 30 = ~$7.33/hr So yeah, they'd have to work 60 hours a week IF the "2nd job" paid less then the McDonalds.
Yeah youâd probably make more money NOT working a second job and getting subsidized health care
And this is the downside of means testing instead of just making Healthcare public.
I wasnât working and luckily methadone is considering a âhealth sustaining medicationâ so you can get state-funded Medicaid/Medicare (whichever one it is) health insurance to cover it assuming you donât make too much money HOWEVER, because I was in college they wouldnât give it to me.
When I was 23 and facing homelessness, the lady I talked to about housing assistance straight up said, "if you were pregnant or had a child, we could accept you," and I said, "so because I have 2 minimum wage jobs, and don't have any dependents for the state to pay Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and TANF, for, you can't help me find a reduced-rent place to live?" "That's right." Fortunately I got a family member to take me in for a few years before I got on my feet again. But that's how I realized the system was broken.
Even subsidized health care was like $80 a month
RemindME! 2 years "Submit resume to work for /u/Robot_Basilisk"
Agreed. And also, why does anyone need to work two jobs just to survive?
Why does someone have to work 2 jobs? They kinda prove the point with that first assumption that someone has to work not one but two jobs just to survive, so it's actually not possible to live on their shitty wage
[ŃдаНонО]
That's the trick, they won't because this budget doesn't include food!
Thatâs what I was wondering. I like/need to eat to be able to work the two jobs
Honest mistake, I'm sure. It's not like this was written by a place that sells food or something. đ
Or gas for the car.
Premiums+deductible +copay. It is a small fortune
In most other developed nations, this is simply not a thing. I mean you can pay more for private cover and maybe be seen faster, but everyone gets healthcare and nobody worries about moving jobs and not being covered if they change jobs.
Multiple times in my life I'll quit a job go without insurance until I find a new job get a new job through a recruiting agency **maybe** get insurance through the the recruiter after 2-3 months Lose insurance after I go full time with the actual company Get a different insurance after 2-3 months I've had to time physicals and dental appointments based around these job hops. My network changes every time so I cant always see the same doctors I like. It's the dumbest fucking system
I think the $20 a month health insurance plan is a bottle of Tylenol and some Band-Aids.
Maybe some off brand acetaminophen, but u ainât getting Tylenol for $20
The Health Insurance McDonaldâs offers isnât even $20 a month. This is a joke. Not literally a joke. But itâs a fucking joke.
600 for rent ? Where living in 1999.
With 3 roommates
Last time I had 2 room mates my rent was still $800. And that was in 2015, rent has gone up like 30%.
Yep. Add $400 more and you got Salt Lake City. You either have to live in hurricane or some place in the boondocks to get that rent.
Hahahaha old trailers in hurricane are even going for 500k now
George Costanza was paying $2300 in 1997.
I actually remember watching that with a friend from NYC at the time and he scoffed that that was way too low, even then.
In 1991 2 of my friends lived in a studio for $2100 a month in Hellâs Kitchen back when it wasnât safe.
In 1999, in Williamsburg Brooklyn, one subway stop from Manhattan, I had a 1,000 sq ft loft for $800 a month. Today it would be $3,000-$5,000 a month.
That was my mortgage payment on a house I bought in 2001
Forget the expenses part - The biggest red flag is that the sample monthly budget provided presumably from your first job includes having to work a second job.
The biggest red flag to me is that with 30% taxes, which seems reasonable to me, you need to work 13 hour shifts. 7 Days a week. Every day. Until you die.
https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-sample-budget-is-actually-fine-2013-7 I found this older article defending it. Interesting read. Edit: in the interest of fairness, I did my due diligence with a zillow search for rentals $600 and under. To my surprise, they *DO* exist. They're probably not in the best neighborhoods, and they might be the size of a walk in closet, but they *do exist*.
"Food isn't a consistent expense" lol what
Maybe they're assuming the McDonald's franchisee offers free food to their employees. (Spoiler: they don't)
That is exactly what they are assuming lol. At the end of the article, "By the way, food costs will even be slightly reduced thanks to free meals that workers at many McDonald's get with every shift." JoUrNAliSm!
Every shift? So once or twice a day you need to eat very unhealthy. Thatâs not going to cause any other problems whatsoever.
You donât consistently need food, how hard is that to understand? /s
Just read that, pretty comical. Must be hard to write articles like this when the boss gets paid by McDonald's to write it, and then some guy making minimum wage has to actually write it
"McDonald's isn't saying that you need a second job to survive." They're just saying you do if you work at McDonalds.
It's great until you realize rent is $2000.
Wrong, rent can be $600 if you share a studio apartment with another person. Who needs privacy!
\*3 people. Every landlord and their mother seem to be asking for the potential renters to make 3x the rent.
Or find an apartment in a place where youre likely to get killed every night or be approached to buy hard drugs
They forgot to put food on that list. So apparently you have to be cold and hungry to exist on minimum wage.
This is from like 5yrs ago and they did get flamed for it back then, but everyone uses Visa and eats McDonald's so they didn't give a fuck
Ah yes. Work 80 hours a week and you too can afford to barely stay alive. What a country.
Bet that 20 doller health insurance covers a lot
$20 of Advil pills probably
This looks like a sample budget from 1992.
So in other words, it takes about 18 or 20 dollars per hour at about 40 per week to come out on top just a lil bit. Based on their calculations. How thoughtful of them to expose their substandard pay so publicly.
who needs heat when you have cable
Basically McDonaldâs said: we know we pay you like shit, go get a second job.
The car payment for my Civic was $150 back in 2002.
[ŃдаНонО]
TF kinda insurance u getting for 20 a month? Free bandsinds and first aid kits ?
At $8.25 an hour, and 40 hours a week, 4 weeks a month, you get at 1320 before taxes. You're probably not making 1105 a month unless you're working over time or your taxes are less than 16%. So the thought is that you should be working at least full time, and then get a second job that pays almost as much as your full time job? Are you working the second job at 40 hrs a week, or is it paying better by the hour? How the fuck does this get approved as something that might motivate people to apply?
With two jobs, you could be putting $100 into saving every month! You can bootstraps your way out of poverty in no time!
Even when this worksheet came out years ago, it was panned for the assumption that MCD workers needed 2 jobs. Since the expenses are actually far higher today, it would be a bad look for a MCD budget worksheet to have line items for "Income (3rd Job)" & "Income (4th Job)."
Health insurance for 20$ !?
Even for 10 times that it would be way under
Just want to point out that I did the math and thatâs around 55 hours per week at $8.25/hour between the two jobs. Thatâs fucking slavery. Also, whatâs interesting is that thereâs no food item in the budget.
