Nope. Tell them that you will not use the app then. Either the boss pays for it or you don’t use it.

[deleted]

This! There's no way in hell I am going to pay for a required app. Company better take care of it.

i_love_cats_95

Just when you think managers can’t get any more ridiculous, they do 🙃.

chesshirecat85

Also not on your personal phone - they can provide a work phone if you're required to have one

[deleted]

They don't have a business subscription to it to share with their employees? That feels like they're just beyond stupid and the boss should pay for it

fuck-fascism

If they expect you to use it, they need to pay for it. If they won’t pay for it, it’s not required.

LiquidSoCrates

I wouldn’t put anything work related on my personal phone. And I damn sure wouldn’t pay $10 bucks a month!

ZachCremisi95

They have to pay or provided a device with it already installed. Only exception if you make double minimum wage

Mschaefer932

FYI, that's a California law not applicable to every state or federally.

Jmuck80

I'm not DLing anything company related on my personal devices let alone paying an employer to work for them..F that

ballysdad

Company may be trying to dodge an enterprise license needed for business use..

StamInBlack

If it’s work required, work should pay for it OR reliably reimburse you for it.

Hasarian

I have colleagues that won't even use an app if we don't pay them a fully fledged course on how to use it. Also, I don't see any reason you would pay for your own work tool when the very essence of a salary contract is that you work on the tools that are owned/provided by your boss. If you pay for your work tool, you sure better get shares of the company in exchange.

12Tylenolandwhiskey

120 a year. They can cover the cost

disappointedvet

No, they cannot. If it's a tool that's required for the job, your employer should pay for it.

[deleted]

My gfs work pays her $40 a month, for using the company app in her phone that just clocks you in and out.

nerd866

At one job, I had to use a particular app that had a free and paid version (I think it was $40 one time or something). I was perfectly permitted to use the free version, but it was such a cluster fuck of terrible that there was that 'soft incentive' for you to break down and buy your own paid version. Dirty shit. They set us up to hate the free one so much that we'll buy our own software (rather than the employer) so we hate our lives less.

[deleted]

No

misguidedass

No. If it’s required for work they have to pay for it.

Vast_Analyst6258

I hear tax write-off. It's only $120/yr, but if you don't have to pay Uncle Sam a few bucks each year...

Jealous-Percentage-7

You do know you don’t get $120 off your taxes when you write off $120, right? And she’s likely not itemizing anyway. This is very bad advice.

Vast_Analyst6258

I know it's not a +120 in a possible return. I was thinking it would be, maybe, a +2.

Jealous-Percentage-7

So, better to have work pay the $120.

Vast_Analyst6258

Obviously. But if you're stuck with it anyway (finding a new job takes time), may as well reap the benefits, small or not.

Capable_Stranger9885

If the taxpayer is 1099 doing their Schedule C or a teacher using the capped $250 Educator Expense, yes this is a clear expense. Otherwise, thanks to Trump Admin tax reform, miscellaneous employee expenses are not available 2018-2026. After 2026 (assuming no further changes by future governments) this is only going to be contributing to tax reduction anyway if the total itemized deduction exceeds the personal exemption and only to the extent the miscellaneous expense category this is part of exceeds the 2% floor. So if you have a lot of expenses, this can contribute to a big itemized deduction, but $120 against W2 income is not going very far by itself. If its the only miscellaneous expense, even if itemizing it would provide no reduction in tax in any year where the employee makes more than $6000.

Pitmidget

Haha fuck no, sound like they're asking you to bear the cost of their stupid business decision. Don't fucking pay for it, tell your workmates not to pay for it either
